line of the day – ‘I reckon one day we’re going to have rock juice, because we want minerality in our bodies’

I actually laughed out loud at 17.21 – let’s face it, Gary is a funny guy

  • I really liked this episode, makes me long for the spring, and white wine!

QOTD: I absolutely love bratwurst, I boil them in beer, with lemon, lime, kraut, jalapeno, bay, onion and other stuff….I usually use an arrogant bastard, and then a couple bottles of whatever ale I happen to have on hand, and drink that beer with them. Best.Pairing.Ever. latest and greatest? Monks Ale from here in New Mexico, only Benedictine brewed beer in the New World!!

  • NY Pete

other mini question … 3 or 4 alsatians.

  • tflangan

QOTD: Coors Light with a Whole Foods Kick Ass Horseradish Roast Beef Sandwich.

    Tom Langan

  • peaceloveandpinstripes

Welcome back GV at least the jets played well the vikings handed the saints a ticket to miami….to all of the saints fans you are welcome I hope peyton and his crew do their usual thing and pick apart that defense.

My school had a ton of auto shop classes as well as many other types of technical electives

I am sure i have had some alsatian wines just can't name them

My favorite non wine food beverage combo has to be a burger after golf with a nice smooth beer.

  • Great show, sorry about the Jets, and the Nicks, Go Mav's!
My School had a shop class and a wood working class, Waco Texas.

My fav food bev combo is Mt. Dew and Chinese food, I Love it!!!!!!!

  • bwine

    Literally?

  • QOTD: Dale's Pale Ale & pistachios while watching a Yankee game.

GV, love to see you review Oskar Blues' beers including Dale's Pale Ale, Old Chubb, Gordon, etc. Only available in a can & it rocks!

Good to see you this weekend!

  • $2.41 In Texas

  • BrooklynPaul

QOTD: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale…and Pizza

  • See, you cheered up after all.

One of the first imprinting wines I ever had was a Zind-Humbrecht Pinot d'Alsace … I know, it's not Riesling, but to be honest I picked up some of the '06 Heimbourg off CW and thought it wasn't quite ready. Granted, I was coming down with a serious case of flu at the time …

Q: Cheese-oriented pizza (preferably gruyere + gorgonzola) and a nice sharp Eurolager, based on an epiphany I had on a cold, wet and otherwise miserable night in Zurich …

  • This episode was like watching the 2nd half of the jets game… What a let down after waiting a week for a new episode. Hope you feel better and bring back the thunder.

    QOTD: COFFEE

  • jason carey

Ice Espresso and a Pine Nut Cookie.

  • Cindy

Strong black coffee with vanilla ice cream. Love you, GV! Keep the faith!

  • prasm

Gary, as a 50 year-old life-long Vikings fan I can relate very well to what your feeling now. In fact I tuned in to WLTV this evening as an attempt to get myself out of my personal football funk. Losing a Conference Championship game in OT when your team dominated in every statistical area except points (and turnovers) is especially tough to take. I'm with you on the Saints though, just not impressed with the Colts – basically a one-man team.

QOTD: Ice cold milk and Oreo cookies!

  • jason carey

No Wait.. Real Sichuan Food with Coke.

  • castello

Ok, about 3 bones in cali.

  • laurieinvt

I'll bet you could appreciate a decent white wine (also excellent with venison, btw) if you'd cut down on the spam! 😉

  • slushpuppy

Gary, I firmly believe that the last three calls towards the end of the game were incorrect. The ref's through the game because of sympathy for New Orleans, especially at home. The fix was in!!!
    Smell it first. TR

  • castello

Good beer in a can? I want some.

  • raquelholl

Just read your book and was waiting for the infamous thunder at the beginning… Cool to watch it show up a bit later. I watched to see you in action, but enjoyed the content as well. I am brand new to the wine scene, but would really like to “acquire” the taste. I will keep watching….

    Welcome back Gary,

Go Saints (by default)! I hope they bury Manning on the field. Lousy Colts.

miniQOTDs: no auto-shop in my high school (Texas, 1990s); haven't had any Riesling from Alsace, but I've been meaning to try some.

QOTD: My favorite non-wine beverage/food pairing is a hot cup of black coffee (preferably from Sumatra or Ethiopia) and a slice of pie (preferably coconut cream or lemon meringue). Pie and coffee. Hard to beat.

  • Try dry roasted peanuts in a bottle of pepsi…It's sounds strange but it's killer!

  • Lousy? You have no clue.

  • Geez, I got all wound up and forgot the QOTD:

QOTD: Milk with graham crackers and peanut butter!

  • My brother is a Vikings fan and he is dying. I got a phone call Monday morning and the words I heard was “What the f*** happened!”

You live by the sword, you die by the sword. I was rooting for the Vikes. 🙁

  • gary, you look less stressed without the beard. and sorry to heard about your jets…

qotd: i LOVE coca cola classic, even more so than wine! if i can't have a coke with mcdonald's breakfast sandwiches…i won't eat it! deadly combo, but soo sooo good.

  • SourGrapesFC

Santa Fe brewery has some pretty great brews, too. Their Pinon Brown Ale is unique and delicious.

  • My QOTD: What would you pay (max) for a Super Bowl ticket?

  • I don't think there is such a thing.

  • Anonymous

No team DESERVES it. The team that executes, wins, bottom line. And there aren’t many QB’s that could execute better than Manning did on Sunday in the second half. It was surgical. I didn’t gloat about my team winning thus far, but I can’t just let the comments roll by anymore, gonna have to start pushing back now. I gave the Jets props for their season, but they were simply out matched on Sunday and it was painfully obvious. No QB or team in the league makes better in game adjustments then my boys and what they did in the second half was masterful. It was a beautiful thing.

  • NY Pete

this year … nada … zippo … zero … Go Saints!

  • Neil

Too bad for the JETS. Sanchez did far better than I expected. The problem is Peyton Manning cut apart the defense in the second half and the Jets didn't have a workable plan B.

QOTD: Can't beat Asian food with Reisling (or a GruV). A nice hamburger with a coke is also a good non-alcoholic combo. Did anyone say Affogato?

  • Jim

Love Alsace. Was staying at a gite at Albert Boxler's winery for a month during harvest. Alsatian whites are awesome. My favorites are reisling and gewurtz. Trimbach's reisling is a favorite.

  • Nice episode, thought at first wasn't sure where you were going (end of WLTV due to devastating loss?). Good to have you back in the saddle.

QOTD: A little Anchor Steam and Five Guys burger (everything ex mayo) and Fries.

btw, NY Pete enough comments already. I know you missed the guy (we all did) and you go way back, but jeez!… hey just kidding 😉

  • laurieinvt

Nothing like a Riesling to get you out of a funk!
Side questions: we've probably had 2 or 3 Alsatian Rieslings that I remember enjoying; yes, there was auto and auto body shop because I went to a comparatively larger union high school, the hubby went to a private school where that wasn't an option (or needed, presumably…)
QOTD: Seltzer with orange or cranberry blend juice and a BLT, or good coffee with Grade B amber maple syrup and a plate of grits and one egg over easy.

  • lmyer

Wow, serious depression at the beginning. It's nice that you pepped up at the end!

    QOTD: Hard to decide —
Branston pickle and cheddar with single malt scotch
    Roadside stand tacos with horchata
Chocolate cake with cold glass of milk

  • GeneV

As many of the Vayniacs know, I am an Alsace nut, so my answer to the mini QOD is that I have had more Alsatian wines than I can count (with several hundred in my cellar, now). I am a big fan of Leon Beyer, and the Riesling Les Ecaillers. The name of the wine refers to a French term for a seller of oysters, and the wine was made to go with oysters and seafood. It is from the Pfersigberg Grand Cru vineyard near Eguisheim, France. When I tasted the 2001 vintage of that wine at the winery, they recommended that it be cellared for at least 8 years. This one is built for distance. Glad you liked it, and I am glad you are carrying this excellent old-school producer.

Sorry about the Jets. I lost a bet.

  • castello

I had some Fat Tire in a can(see picture)and it wasn't quite the same but has potential.

  • castello

I don't think Whole Foods sell Coors Light. Toooo watery. Put some rocks in it.

  • ChrisNY2

QOTD: When I find myself at the diner late at night, french toast and a heineken is a good combo.

  • vintage59

Gary, On to Basketball, You need to watch the Cav's. Now that is basketball!!!. Ohio proud!!

QotD: Spicy wings and Stone Brewing company's 'Virtical Epic” and amazing hand crafted Belgium style beer that is produced once a year. For 2009 it was released on 09/09/09. 2010, 10/10/10. Find this Beer, will be one of the best you have every tasted

  • wesleymcallister

Hey Gary sorry to see the Jets loose I am sure you had many people hoping for the best for you. I have had 2 Alsatian Rieslings and have liked both of them.
QOTD: I injoy orange pop with pizza it makes me feel like a kid again. I always try to make the biggest mustache possible. I think we should do that with red wine more often. Hmmm I need to start a new blog redwinemustaches. I like it.

  • MIchael C in MKE

Wisconsin Cheese is the f-ing best! Props to “Gourmet Library.”

Alsatian wines rule. I often recommend Gewurztraminer to people because they are such great food wines. Rieslings as well. LIke you were saying, the favored wines are the ones that work with food.

QOTD: A sweet/spicy bourbon with some cinnamon candy. Buffalo Trace and Hot Tamales, was rocking my world the other day.

Talk about Football all you want. Though I think this Super Bowl is going to be a snooze.

  • prasm

After 40+ years of rooting for the Vikes its amazing how they can continually find new ways to break my heart. I really thought this was the year…

  • hope you feel better GV….internet's most passionate wine program didn't sound so energetic today 😛 but good nonetheless.

loved the theme today: i've always admired the land of Alace…back in elementary school in South Korea (I obviously didn't know back then my parents would subsequently move to Philly and I'd turn into an Eagles and Phillies fan….should they trade Donovan?), I have a fond memory of reading a biography of an Alsatian named Dr. Albert Schweitzer, one of the greatest humanitarians of modern era. Due to its strategic geographical location and natural resources, Alsace back in the days had been very vulnerable and had subsequently been invaded by larger powers. Back in the days, an Alsatian might be born a Frenchman and die a German or vice versa depending on the outcome of the latest bout. On the flip side, they say Alsatians, who have no unnecessary scruples about taking the best of both worlds, eat as MUCH as the Germans and as WELL as the French. They've also learned to coexist as Catholics and Protestants. All this history adds so much to my appreciation for their wine.

QOTD: I likes me some Hennessy VSOP with walnuts…or nice German hefeweizen(franziskaner, weinstephan, shofferhofer) with any sort of sausage (I learned to drink beer in Germany….don't hate)

  • Emily Ellis

My dad likes a russian imperial stout with lamb. I like a gin and tonic with sliced tomatoes and feta cheese.

    PS-LOVE Wisconsin cheese!

  • Krunch

Gary, welcome back, looking good without the fuzzy face. Now I have a little beef to get off my chest here, Now you admit that you are feeling bad about the loss and that you are fighting a cold, your run down and tiered. So is your taste buds up to par? If you have a cold then don't give an opinion, too many of your viewers are newbies to wine and don't really know that these things effect your ability to give a “true” opinion. Be honest, be true and don't give us BS. we'll like you more and respect you longer. I am sure you know I am just giving you advise not criticizing.

  • nicko

    QOTD:
I think my favorite food and beverage pairing is probably Dr. Pepper with Mini Burgers from Ruby Tuesday. Heavenly!!!

  • canadapete

I'd just like to say I like your resilience Gary. You bounced right back full throttle after the heartbreak. That's what separates you from most people – you don't give up, lie down, – you fight.

  • DPnCali

Good to see you back and nice to see you get pumped up shortly after the show started (I'll spare you me gloating about my Colts just because I don't want to put you in a bad mood again).

mini-qotd: My high school had a separate vocational building that had auto shop, wood shop, etc. (graduated '95)

QOTD: When I was a teenager, (maybe 14 through 18) I lived in Tennessee (originally from Indiana, now live in Cali) and most gas stations down there sold hot food, kinda like a 7-11 does, except with more variety. Well, they sold these pizza roll like things, except they were about 6 inches long. One day I had one of those along with a Hawaiian Punch, and I thought I had found heaven at the Chevron. I don't know what it was about it, but till this day, no non-wine/food combo has even come close. Hell, now that I think about it, I might even go grab a box of frozen Totinos and a Hawaiian Punch and see if I can replicate it now…but doubt it. 😛
