line of the day – ‘I reckon one day we’re going to have rock juice, because we want minerality in our bodies’

I actually laughed out loud at 17.21 – let’s face it, Gary is a funny guy

  • Welcome back… nice show to start your post-NFL season…

QOTD: Tejava Iced Tea w/ lemon, everyday for lunch… with whatever I'm having…

  • XpensiveWino

QOTD: Four Rose's Single Barrel Bourbon and Kansas City BBQ!

  • boomy13

How about Green tea and chocolate. I had it recently for the first time, and found not only nothing wrong with it, but that it was interestingly pleasing. The Green tea needs to be quality, and the chocolate cant be Hershey's.

How about losing in overtime… Yeah, me the Vikings fan am also quite under the weather with football, and I dont even care who wins the SBowl to be honest.

  • Loving that Justin is a Raiders Fan!! You just got extra marks for having a family member who isn't afraid to be a Raiders FAN!

  • Had a beautiful Alsacian Riesling with AngryPhotog in SF a while back. Pure grease pit, it was fantastic.

  • Welcome Back! Sorry your team lost. GO SAINTS

  • SilentX

QOTD: something greasy with a solid pale ale, but not a palate destroying IPA. It's great to cut through the mouth sludge of fish and chips with a Sierra Nevada

  • bdshupe

I was cheering for the Jets too. Tough loss. I'm an Arizona fan, so I know how you feel.

My favorite food and drink pairing is a Sam Adam's Summer Ale with a beer brat covered in cooked green peppers and onions and a little bit of sourkraut.

  • missatiejacket

good episode despite your somber mood in the beginning. I drink Riesling from Alsace regularly; I've probably had 50-100 not counting tastings. My favorite non wine beverages are beer and water. I love having lager or light ales with spicy foods.

  • joelbombardier

Great show, good to have you back.

First, I have been drinking a variety of Alsacian just recently. Both from Pierre Sparr one was their 2002 reserve Gewürztraminer and the other was an 2004 Reisling. Both were quite tasty!

QOTD: I love tea! I find tea and cheese pairing especially exciting!

  • NY Pete

glad the thunder is back in the thunder show

  • QOTD: I'm all over the place but is there a lot that tops a Root beer float? I think not!

  • wayno daaa wino

YEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAW, G back in da HIIIIIZZZZZZYYY!!!!!! :o)

  • Hey G, congrats on the Innovator of the Year Wine Star Award on Monday night. It couldn't have gone to a better man. I work that event every year and was so happy to see my boy from Wine Library TV being honored. Gotta say though I'm surprised you didn't shave for the event. I figured you wouldn't have shaved that thing off right after the last second of regulation! Anyway, congrats again!!!

  • kkrewell

I fell in love with Alsatian wines after going to the Alsatian Wine Festival in Booneville two years ago. This year it's Feb. 20th. I found that Michigan (Traverse City area) makes some really good Alsatian whites.

WRT to the Jets – I feel your pain, but I still enjoyed the ride!

  • Steve_T

I can vouche for Lakeland Senior High School and Walter Pannas High School in Westchester NY that we did not offer auto shop, but allowed students to take it at a nearby vocational training school on transfer.
I've probably had 4 or 5 alsatian rieslings, but I'm still 21 so I guess thats not too bad.
Qotd: milk with either pretzels or pizza.

  • Noelle

I'm from Minnesota – we're in the same football boat.

Diet Dr. Pepper and a bean burrito – my standard go-to.

  • RANDINTHECITY

    GARY!!!!

Rock juice!.. hee hee You Rock ;o)

    Not many Rieslings at all..

QOTD: Diet Dr. Pepper & Grilled Chicken .. (was tonights dinner..lolol)

The Jets…they had a good run..came pretty far…and thats that.

    Love ya Gary!

  • Le_M

Always great to see wines from around here on the show.

QOTD: Coffee, Water, Gin & Tonic. Mostly without food nearby.

  • C_Shorty

mini QOTD: only had 2 or 3 Alsatian Reislings. Last one was Wolfberger. Really good. I still prefer Reisling from Germany above Alsace. It is phenomenal how much weight and body they can achieve with such low levels of alcohol. Amazing stuff.

big QOTD: Coffee and whatever is for breakfast. Also chili and beer. I will be making a giant pot this weekend for friends.

  • notTheFalseD

Non-wine beverage really depends on the weather/setting etc. I'm a tea fanatic, so there are a lot of combos that involve tea… For instance, a banana and cashews go well with a cup of Pu Erh. Or Keemun Hao Ya B. In hot weather I prefer my entirely unpatented 50/50 mixture of apple juice and mineral water. The latter goes quite well with some kinds of cheese, or with guacamole and some carbs… And good company is also essential.

I've probably had about 1.5-3 Alsatian wines in my life. It's embarrassing, but I tend to automatically look to Germany for Riesling…

  • Anonymous

Have any of you tried Dogfish Head 120? I’ve only had the 90.

For a not-too-hoppy IPA I have enjoyed Avery Dugana IPA (though I guess officially it’s an Imperial IPA). It is so very balanced and delicious.

  • guymandude

Had a few Alsace Rieslings over the years, one of my favs.

    qotd; coffee

  • kkrewell

QOTD: Black Kauai Peaberry Coffee with Dunkin Donuts. I love how the acidity and mild bitterness of the coffee cuts the sweetness of the donut. 🙂

  • CharlieTN

Never had an Alsatian Riesling, just an Alsatian Gewurztraminer–which was excellent. Definitely plan to get some more from this region.

Rock juice… I like it. I'd buy it. Although I might just buy Riesling instead.

QOTD: My favorite non-wine drink is a good bourbon, but I don't tend to drink it with any food. As far as a food pairing goes, probably really dark porter or stout with a big hunk of meat. Or maybe a chocolatey stout with some decadent dessert… I like my beer loud.

  • I was laughing so hard when GV crossed his hands, closed his eyes, and told Mott that he didn't want to hear it…

No auto body class in HS.

Really good QOTD: I have a million that I could go with but I think I'm going to say on a golf course, at the turn… a tall can of Arizona Arnold Palmer with a hot dog with mustard and relish (preferably in Hawaii).

  • mafioso

Lurker since episode 300….Huge fan Gary…Love Alsatian wines, Trimbachs make really quality products as well as Hugel, their Les Amoures Pinot Blanc is fantastic.
QOTD:Grape Soda with chinese food… something about sweet and savory

  • C_Shorty

Cappuccino and Tiramisu or at least biscotti after a good Italian dinner is also a big fav.

  • gotsha

QOTD…Favorite pairing would be a root beer float. How easy was that question?

Mini question..I've had several bottles of Alsatian Riesling. My favorite has to be Albert Boxler 2004 Grand Cru. I went to a hoity-toity tasting a couple years ago, and I thought this was the best wine of the night. Very, very, very good stuff.

  • drt999

Glad to see you back, GV! You're now an honorary member of the 'Who Dat Nation'!
And while all boys had to take a half year of auto shop in PA when I was in 8th grade, I'm a little older than Mott!

    Mini-Question — I've had a few, inc. a Cindy choice

QOTD — Hot chocolate and buttered (with real butter) toast — childhood comfort food

  • Nice to have you back in the saddle bud, It was also really nice seeing you Saturday Gary…I just wish your weekend could have turned out better then it did 🙁

QOTD: Its funny you that you said cookies and milk but that's what I love…Ana makes fun of me all the time…but what does she know 😉

  • Welcome back gv!

  • IndyJones

Sorry you made it personal and hate the Colts. As a 24 year season ticket holder I was at the tailgates and the game. I actually thought both teams' fans got along pretty well and respected each other and their teams for making it this far. Apparently you feel differently.
As far as supporting the Haitian situation, I think Pierre Garcon, one of your hated Colts, has most of his extended family there and not all have been found yet. Helping out this cause is probably more important than a football game. I know he is also raising monies for the cause. A shoutout to all who pitchin. Interesting Reisling reviews and good to have you back. QOTD – Coffee and bagels.

  • Absinthe with vanilla ice cream.
I heard a guy explaining a little bit of football to his son at a Chinese place tonight and I heard him tout P Manning as the best qb and then the son retorted with his second best pic Tom Brady and I just felt kinda grossed out by the whole thing.

  • johnr

Great to see you again, feels like its been a while! Honestly, made good, a WAWA Italian sub with a WaWa sweet Ice Tea….BALLER!!!!! JohnR!

  • Pro drinker

I have tried many times white wines without any success. I just happen to dislike white wine and I really don´t care because I don´t like seafood as well. Never had an Alsatian wine and I don´t plan to try one…white wine sucks!

QOTD : Beer! Beer and spam, beer saugage and spam, beer saugage and spam spam, beer spam spam spam spam, beer beer beer saugage and spam 🙂

  • MooseSox

Good to see the rust literally come off as the episode progressed. At first I thought this was going to be a slog to get through, but you picked it up by the time you sniffy-sniffed the second wine. I guess you just needed a little thunder to get you going again!

QOTD: Grilled Sausage and a quality beer – can't go wrong with that pairing!

BTW – I like the food cameos. Gourmet library is a good site, and I love the video descriptions of a lot of the products. I haven't bought anything yet, but once I get through my current stock of cheese, I'll definitely take a look at the cheese and sausages.

  • kevy1c

Gotta love those Rieslings, I've been lucky to taste close to 10 alastian Rieslings, but I'm glad u mentioned their Pinot Blancs too , they rock!
QOTD – My fav non-wine beverage is Beamish, its an Irish stout made in my hometown Cork City in the South of Ireland. Stout is quite a heavy drink s I usually don't drink it at mealtimes, so I like to nibble on packs of Chilli-nuts.

  • amgryger

I’ve had the Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA. From my experience it’s far better after 18-24 months in bottle. As in I actually enjoyed it with that much age, but thought that freshly bottled it was practically undrinkable.

  • adrums

Welcome back Gary, very nice show. Time heals all wounds, even those as deep and profound as this one.
pre QOTD: I've had a handful of Zind Humbrecht gewurtz, no Alsacian riesling though I'm afraid.
    QOTD: lager beer with chili.
I have to say, your diet doesn't seem particularly balanced… fat spread upon fat, finished off with more of the same. Get a stick of celery in there, dude!

  • MooseSox

From the year I lived in Nashville, I also learned that sweet tea and ribs is a pretty killer combo as well.

And I literally mean, if you eat and drink that too often, if will in fact kill you. You'll go with a smile, though.

  • matthyson

QOTD – Without a doubt it's the mighty Caesar. The Canadian improvement on the Bloody Mary with the oh so tasty Clamato Juice. As for pairing some food, give me a bag of salt and vinegar chips and I'm quite happy.

  • castello

I thought we were gonna get Sir Vaynerchuk with that beginning. I don't recall having auto shop in my Chicago high school but when we moved to Cali they had one. I used to love Cali Rieslings back in the 70's when we would get grey riesling and Johanisberg Riesling from Mondavi and Krug. They were like the best water ever. Then they got sour to me. I think it depends on food and stuff the acidity is borderline sour sometimes. I can't wait to try rock water! I ordered a couple of these 04 Rieslings to see what they're like.
I love to try new beers. Anything I don't recognize I'll buy just to check it out. My go to beer is Pilsner Urquel for light refreshing but had a Hofbrau last week that rocked my world. Since I've been watching the tequila whisperer I've tried some awesome cactus juice but I get in trouble when I mix it with a big red wine. Wellcome back to the real world Mott and Gary!

  • bwine

Could be worse; you could be an Eagles fan. Back to back losses to the Cowboys is almost too much to bear.

My beverage budget is stretched thin as it is. How much would rock juice have to cost?

QOTD: I drink wine or water with every meal except breakfast, so I'd have to say OJ with a breakfast burrito (made with leftovers from Don Pablo's chicken fajita).

  • MBaran

qotd: hangover cure. brunch bloody mary paired with burger topped with fried egg. awesome.

  • castello

I think rock water would be about as hard to make as gas so, about 4 bucks a gallon.

  • frank

had some decent alsace rieslings at the boston wine expo last sat. by the way, nice job at your seminar on sat. you looked a little under the weather but after a while you brought the thunder and everyone seemed to have a great time. milk and moms homemade tollhouse cookies

  • NY Pete

mini question … hot dogs and cold beer.

  • Cindy

Hey Gary -I’m not a football fan but saw this interview on your FB site before the game the other day and I rooted like heck for your Jets…

  • castello

Are you from Pittsburgh? I think they put eggs on all their sandwiches.
