Entertaining episode with great wines. Highlight is Gary’s MC Hammer – ‘can’t touch this’ dance half way through

  • Its funny how you talk about lurkers coming up to you during the expo because I had 6 or 7 people that came up to me and talked about WLTV…all lurkers…I talked them all into jumping in are our fun 🙂

Loved the Hammer dance….WLTV CLASSIC for sure!!

  • Really Mike, really? Gary and I flew thousands of miles from opposite ends of the country to watch the Jets/Colts game. I am going to enjoy watching Gary crush you. LOL

    2. Certainly not enough, though some.

    3. Not a lurker (or even a BLN)

Oh one other thing, Gary: I'm curious as to why you don't specify the individual reviewers for the Wine Spectator the same way you do for Steve and Josh at IWC, as well as Pappa Bob, DrBigJay, or David Schizz et al., at the Advocate…
I'm assuming these reviews come from Molesworth, a reviewer I personally like quite a bit… just curious.

  • Katie Marquez

Thanks for mentioning the phosphoric acid! I swear people usually look at me like I’ve grown a 2nd head when I launch into that spiel.

GV bustin out the Hammer Time…nice!

    Gary,
Bro…my bad! I thought you said something about “hating the lurkers” but I was wrong. What you actually said was “I don’t like lurkers…they’re like cults!” I should have paid better attention. Here’s a tip of the hat to a stand-up guy & a real class act!

  • audiofan

For the fans of the stemless glassware: it allows your hand's body heat to warm the wine – bad idea for serious wines but OK for the quaffing wine at the local picnic. Much more difficult to swirl as well…right, Gary?
Gary, you said “Anybody out there making Syrah in the world (Australia, California, etc.) can't touch this…” The good people at Cayuse, Copain, and your friend Charles Smith (as well as many others) would probably take you to task on that one. But you're right: to each his own! But I digress.
I love the great Grenache-based Southern Rhones the most (CdP), but have been enjoying Hermitage, Cote Rotie, and St. Joseph for years; your other friend Mr. Parker (who has been extolling these wines forever) turned me on to this great region back when I first learned to read. Glancing through the comments so far, I am somewhat surprised; the most common response seems to be “I've never had a St. Joseph”. Hmmm. Lots of work left to do, Gary.
Finally, the “nation” loves ya, bro, but easy on the 'ol lurkers out there. That catagory fits about 99+% of your viewing audience! “Hate” is a pretty strong word – how 'bout saying they “fill you with a Colts-like displeasure.” Now, let's start that month of Champagne shows!

  • QOTD – ex: Penn in: Teller
well not really, but that's what popped up in my head first….

  • JasonGonzales

Ha ha… Nice combo. A little magician action. I like it. And I literally would “like” it, but I don't see the button.

  • I'm not lurking, just can't think of anything.

Yes you can drink wine and laugh!

Favorite extrovert: Benjamin Franklin (a personal hero)

  • Gary…I think you need to throw down more that dancing skill.

Sometimes I'm feeling Pepsi, but most of the time it's Coke.

QOTD : Extrovert – My girlfriend. She gets me to do things I never would haha
Introvert – Gotta be my Pops

  • vpass64

Gary it is good to see you back and feeling better. I have to admit that I have lurking for over 350 episodes. I am a big fan. Although I consider myself more of a Scotch drinker, I take pleasure and interest in all beverages. Well, almost all. No vodka. Keep up the great work. Perhaps one day you will have the urge to do another single malt show. I have something that will dance on your pallet like MC Hammer!

    Q: Coke or Pepsi.
    A: Coke

    Q: St. Joseph's?
A: Never tried, but I can see it in the not too distant future

    Q: Introvert and Extrovert?
A: Introvert: Matt Damon's character in The Good Shepard
    Extrovert: Socrates

  • ERog

Very interesting episode. I am always interested in lesser-known areas where value can be found. I will definitely seek out a St. Joseph, though I have never had one.

    Coke vs. Pepsi? Coke.

Using only extreme examples of each (since most people seem to be somewhere in the middle):
Introvert: one of my best friends from high school. Much more focused than I was. Taught me a bit of self discipline.
Extrovert: One of my close college friends. Incidentally, she lives pretty close to the Wine Library now with her husband and newborn!

  • MelbaLI

    Neal Peart. Winner!

  • bob222222

    great show, thanks

  • 😉

  • JasonGonzales

QOTD: Coke, but I'll buy Pepsi if it's cheeper!

    QOTD:
INTROVERT: My Grandma – Albert Einstein
(I know Einstein was an outgoing guy, but I imagine him as introverted)

EXTROVERT: My Dad – Conan O'Brien or Dave Chappelle <— Both extremely intelligent dudes.

  • KennethNDC

    – Coke, preferably Cherry Coke
    – I have been fortunate enough to have tried many St. Joseph's. Northern Rhone is my favorite! I will have to look these two up as I haven't had them.
    -Extrovert: Doc Holiday, in Tombstone.
-Introvert: Can't think of one. Perhaps after a couple glasses of wine….

    Great show GV.

  • JasonGonzales

    NICE introvert! Me likey.

  • alienrelic

Well, I guess I am officially a former lurker. I've been watching since around show 475 or so. Found you on Itunes. I had been looking for a good wine podcast but was turned off by the wine snob mentality I found. When I tuned into your show, I have to admit that my first reaction was “Who the HELL is this?”, but quickly decided that you were more than a bit like one of my old Rock n' Roll buddies (also from Jersey). That's a good thing. Since then, I have really enjoyed your show and learned a lot about wine, I hope. Our palates must have something in common, as I have long been a BIG fan of Châteauneuf. Unlike some, i have no negative comments, but I DO wish you would do some more laid back Friday episodes. The first show I saw was one of those, and I really enjoy them.

  • I'm a coke man, and I've tasted Saint Joseph only once.

  • Favorite:

    EXT: Chris Farley

INT: The teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off: “Anyone know what this is? Class? Anyone? Anyone?”

  • Jesse

Hey Gary, did I not see you moaning and groaning on ESPN at the NFL draft when YOUR Jets drafted Mark Sanchez? awww and now you love him? wow interesting

  • Coleman

Good show. Ive had some St Joseph but only a couple including the J L Chave Offerus from CW which I absolutely loved. It was a steal too. I should have bought a case. Ill take coke over pepsi but really Im a dr pepper guy. Favorite introvert MF DOOM. Favorite Extrovert my good buddy Shaun.

  • winecrazy

Yo Homey, I am not getting emails anymore notifying me of the shows. How can I get to ever be in the number one….#1….spot if I'm not blasted with en email..??? Can you have one of the crew look into that for me. I hate being last man on the totem pole ya know… 😉

I don't drink soda brother……way too many chemicals in there. Remember……I did Environmetal Clean Up for 20 years before I retired and I know the damage chemicals can do to your body. Besides…sugars the enemy..!!!! Read the label one day when you get a chance.

  • JustinM

    Garret Anderson and Bill Clinton

  • I like Pepsi, I've never tried a St. Joseph, my favorite extrovert is Eric Cantona of Manchester United fame and my favorite introvert is… Mott.

BTW, great show. Love the new energy. I'm definitely going to seek out some of these wines now.

  • terrandabo

I lean Coke with the exception of the rare (non-existent in Japan) and mysteriously delicious Caffeine Free Pepsi.

I love the Joseph! Who doesn't love an underrated, value driven, over performing region over shadowed by the likes of Hermitage and Cote Rotie? Favorite producer is Jean Delobre.

Favorite extrovert- Starting to think it's you, GV.
Favorite introvert- Hands down, my dad. Old black man who never gives up.

  • StevenL

Love St. Joes- E Guigals are super consistant even in poor years like 2002- the St Joes are stuctured and gamey. But if you are going Baltic Ave on Rhone go Crozes for a great value play.
Great show- been on a great run of super shows.
    QOTD
    Extro- Joe Strummer
    Intro- Mick Jones.

  • JustinM

    United! Great one today, huh?

  • robrx

Coke-old school in the glass bottle. Somehow it tastes better in glass.
I loved the quote–“This is a well drunk part of the world”… and the dance!

  • EmZeeGee

    QOTD:
Introvert: My Mom, in part because she does a good job at pretending she's an extrovert when she needs to for her job. I'm not nearly that good at pretending.

Extrovert:I've had various extroverted friends over the years (I'm usually sort of a wisecracking sidekick) who have gotten me into more trouble and more fun than I would've found on my own.

Sub question: Neither. I'm aiming to stick to water, coffee and tea.

I've never had a St. Joseph's, but this was pretty convincing! I'm glad to see you're back to your usual energetic, extroverted self!

  • Anonymous

    Mott rocks the house!!!
After a night of heavy partying Mott would come in quetly and hand you a good mug of joe.
Gary would bust in yelling “you have to smell this!”

  • You're not kidding, I was on the edge of my seat the whole game. Talk about leaving it to the last second (again)!

  • KVM1985

    1) Coke.
    2) Never had a St. Joseph (sorry)!
    3) Favorite Extrovert – my mom
    4) Favorite Introvert – my dad

Now I'm happy because I'm thinking about my mom and my dad 🙂 Thanks!

  • Steve_T

Dr. Pepper. If I had to pick, then Coke. Although I generally like Pepsi products over Coca Cola ones.
I've been on a bit of a Languedoc kick lately, maybe I'll seek out some St. Joseph to get me moving along.

qotd: Extrovert: Either GV or my mother
    Introvert: My girlfriend
