line of the day – ‘Throw a steak on me – I’m talking Flintstones…tip my cart over.’

Entertaining episode with great wines. Highlight is Gary’s MC Hammer – ‘can’t touch this’ dance half way through

Great show. I have never had St Joseph myself, but I intend to start buying some wines from your website soon and I will definitely become more cultured in my wine drinking at that point. As for coke vs. pepsi….i'm hard core coke fan. Ben even better, I like the A&W cream sodas. And an interesting mixed drink to try whiskey and cream soda, 10 times better than whiskey and coke anyday yet still easy as hell to make.

Qotd: My favorite introvert is one of my best friends this last year, Mike Papes. He's a firefighter from Canada and he served in the canadian military before that. He has done so much bad ass stuff it puts almost everyone he meets to shame and yet he is the most humble and approachable guy on the face of the planet. As for extrovert, I would have to say a girl i have started hanging out with a lot recently, Tabitha Morton. Seriously, she will talk about anything and everything with you, and yet its not annoying or tiring. It makes her so much fun to hang out with and she is always up for a drink or food which makes her awesome in my book. So those are my two picks.

  • teckdeck2008

As much as i wish he wouldn't do it, I like that it brings some perspective to how his ratings compare to where the trend might be heading.

  • Just Jack

roger that Dave. His name will someday become an adjective for cool. Like “Hey, look at that cat work on that chick at the bar. He is soooo Miles”.

  • allanj

Gary you are back on form, for sure. Great Show, probably the best.
    Sub-Q: Coke please!
Gary V-Q: You are right, never had any Saint-Joseph vines, but will try some. The Rhone-Valley is awesome!!!!!
Qotd: Extrovert: I'm gonna have to go with Robin Williams. I Love That Guy. He always cheers me up.
Introvert: Probably Van Morrison. I dunno. The man “Van-The-Man” makes great music. If you don't know his music, you should check it out, and you will never look back. Start with “Moondance”.
    Cheers to the Vay-ner-Nation!
    God bless you all!

  • missatiejacket

great show, Gary. I prefer Coca Cola to Pepsi by far. You don't usually get me with the “have you had this” questions, but I can't remember having had a St Joseph. The Northern Rhone in general is one of the regions I just haven't experimented with much. I have been making more of an effort lately, so I'll surely try some wines from this region. I have no answer to the qotd, as good as it is.

  • cellarrat5

MOLLY DOOKER!!!!! WOOOOO WHOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Good show, nice to see you and the wine bringing back the thunder. For the record Gary, I like Molly Dooker, but it is not the end all Shiraz by any stretch of the imagination. We like what we like. I have to represent the bombs, because SOMETIMES I like getting bombed.

QOTD 1: Coke, the glass bottled stuff with REAL sugar, that stuff is the Tits!

QOTD 2: Your right Gary, never had St. Joseph but I will be looking for it!

QOTD 3: Henry Cavendish, 19th century British scientist, discovered Hydrogen and a dozen other gases, worked with earth density and electricity years before anyone else. Was so introverted he often would run from his house when visitors called on him. Also one of Gary's old guests Maynard James Keenan. He just seems so intelligent and interesting, would love to meet the guy.

Extrovert: probably Robin Williams, or Anthony Kideis? Flea?

  • jeredr

    Subquestion: RC COLA BABY!!!
Subquestion 2: Can't say that I have. Faugeres is where my palate has been lately. Great wines at a great price.
QOTD: Extrovert – My Grandpa, that man always got the largest piece of pie from charming the waitress.
Introvert – Shy Ronnie: AHA! Names Shy Ronnie and I running this ish!! You know i say stay strappin' cause life is a *****!

  • cellarrat5

damn, I wish I actually knew my favorit extrovert and introvert. Maybe this pathetic wine groopie needs to hang out with more interesting people.

  • GLrocks

yeh TREND being the key word
gotta love the rating whores out there
drink what you like and find retailers or wines that fit your own
palette the biggest problem today is way too many critics
and way too many sell outs (Wine Speculator, Parker, etc.
ratings form these guys are for sale

  • CharlieTN

Actually I don't like coke or pepsi. Or any carbonated soft drinks, for that matter.

Never had a St. Joseph, but give me a break, I'm a CKC and I've only been 21 for about 5 months. Just wrote down the Domaine Courbis on my “to buy if I see it” list, though!

    Favorite introvert: Eddie Vedder.
Favorite extrovert: Maybe my mom. Or my girlfriend. Or my girlfriend's mom (lots of fun to drink vino with that one). I don't think it's a coincidence that they're all extroverts.

  • Loved this episode your back. Im a coke gal myself. My favorite extrovert is Gary vaynerchuk and my favorite introvert is Maynard James Keenan. So happy to see your personality shining love to you and yours peace.

  • teckdeck2008

I think part of it is that I don't really have a favorite star or famous person. For being a big fan of tv shows, sports, etc, I place much more stock on my friends and family. If a friend calls me and says lets hang out I will skip almost any show I'm watching and go hang out.

  • scotty b

    GV,

Best show in a looong time. Nice to see the Real Gary back in full effect. I'm pumped about St. Joseph big time and will definitely seek 'em out.

QOTD 1: Coke all the way. It's got more bite.
QOTD 2: Introvert: Henry David Thoreau – I too want to live alone in forest and drink. Extrovert: Jake the Snake Roberts – boo yah – I too want to kick some ass and have a killer snake to back me up.

  • theDude

Gary, Nice show, going to definitely try a St Joseph. I drink way too much Diet Coke but can't quit. I forgot what water tastes like. Its cheaper to drink soda…in reference to your $3 bottle of water the other day.

Favorite introvert: Elwood Blues, Favorite extrovert: Jake Blues (they are my role models in all of life)

  • cellarrat5

That is the way it should be. I felt it was better to list someone who people may have heard of so they have some frame of reference. Although, I doubt many people have heard of Henry Cavandish.

  • tommyb2

Think I have had 1-2 St Joseph wines in my entire life – I remember one being absolutely phenominal.
QOTD: Extrovert – Robin Williams. Introvert – Jimi Hendrix, he only spoke with his guitar man… that's cool.

  • tommyb2

    PEPSI GOD DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!
Coke lovers you all need a serious re-think, that's like saying you prefer Sauv Blanc over Chenin Blanc… ooh; yeah that's right, gonna create some debate in this izzie…

  • MIchael C in MKE

Coke, but only in an Aluminum can.

Extrovert: my friends Andy and Dan ca. 1998
Introvert: J.D. Salinger, John Singer Sargent

  • gpfan

Nice episode on wonderful wine. One thought that occurs after watching numerous episodes is that for someone who goes to great lengths to emphasize the correct pronunciation of his own name you consistently mangle the names of most of the French and Italian wines you feature. Other than that, I'm a big fan.

  • DmitriEn

    Nice glass!

Try not to drink any cola – there are many alternatives out there to the brown sugary chemicals

QOTD: Introvert – Mark Knopfler, Extrovert – GaryV

  • John__J

qotd: introvert, I'll go w J.D. Salinger as I heard the news today, r.i.p.
extrovert, Jeff a good frined of mine
Coke Gary, that's not a question, that's a no brainer.
    Had St. Joseph, definitely underrated.
I don't think I've ever seen you have a wine from the french region of Jura, Gary. Any chance of gettin 1 of those on, I hear their chateau-chalon appellation has some good stuff.

  • Mott

That sounds about right Cool_Dave. 😉

I closed a few joints in my youth but now I just like to go home Just Jack.

  • heavster

For starters, Coke on the rare occasion I drink it. I have tried St. Joseph from time to time and agree with your assessment–yes, they are great buys!
Favorite extrovert: you, Gary, for one. Also, my brother, Curt.
    Favorite introvert: my wife.
Enjoyed attending your gig at the Wine Expo this past weekend and posing for a picture with you. Let the Vaynernation know if that woman does take you up on the oak challenge!

  • scottEJ

Thanks, G. So much more of a Rhone syrah fan than anywhere else. Fruit + teroir = great wine. Fruit + fruit = sticky mess.

QOTD: Extrovert – My Sis. The girl lights up a room. Introvert – Me.

  • wow, that was like my shortest post ever too 😛 thanks for the likes folks

  • kasperhip

Hey Gary great show and good to see you back in the groove of joyous wine reviewing. And nope, I can't touch that (dance)!
I've been wondering why people (and you) rarely talk about wines that are past their prime, and how the hell you judge this. The marked seems to be flooded with wines that are supposed to be drank right away, in fact some say this is maybe THE big change in the industry over the past many years, and if this is true, there ought to be lots of wines that are opened “too late”. You very seldom (if ever) talk about how a wine is actually past it's prime, and I suppose this is due to it being a hard assesment to make…?
I think this might be just as important to talk about as how cellar wine, but I guess we all still think of wine as something that is only going to get better with age. I find it extremly hard to figure out what wine is cellar-worthy and what is not, let alone what wine to buy and what not to buy.
What I'm getting as is this: are you thinking about doing more shows with general information/education on wine? In my mind this is much needed. Thank you for this show. I really enjoy it when you get punped like that. World class winertainment.
    QOTD 1: Coke (with burger)
QOTD 2: never did, will now
    QOTD 3:Extrovert: Lennon Introvert: Dylan

  • cellarrat5

Gary!! I just watched ep 277, you gave the Two Left Feet a 90! I almost sh*t my pants! As much as I like defending my home land fruit bombs, your totally right they do have their place and are not nearly for everyone. Keep calling it how you see it, and we will do our best as well.

  • cynthiaputnam

Gary, Sorry about the Jets but glad to have you back to your old self! My parents are Somms and your show helps my husband and I get a leg up. Thank you and keep up changing the wine world.

  • 😮 NSA! *Ignore my presence!*

  • Just Jack

I hear you Mott. I just turned 42 myself, and home usually sounds better than most alternatives lately.

  • Great episode! Cant beat an episode where you do the hammer dance 🙂

You definintly have me wanting a St. Joseph right now!! RIght here at work at my desk!!!!

QOTD 1: I am equally split between coke and pepsi. I drink diet caffeine free pepsi. But if I eat out, it almost always is diet coke. If I drink regular then I prefer coke. But that new throwback pepsi with real sugar I am really diggin!! So yeah I am really in the middle of the cola wars. But if forced to pick a favorite, I will go RC cola all day long baby!! I havent seen one of those in a long while.

QOTD 2: Favorite extrovert. has to be you gary. No other extrovert comes to mind 🙂

INtrovert. Thats harder to pick out. But the first person I thought of was Eddie Van Halen. Introverted as all get out if you read any interviews with him.

    Jason

  • Here’s another thought: iPad is running iPhone OS 3.2. iPad is off any sort of contract, and is coming out in 2-3 months. iPhone OS 4.0 is rumored to be out in late-June/July with an upgrade to iPhone 3GS. If that happens, Apple will ship iPad with OS 3.2, and charge $10 (like iPod Touch) for OS upgrade to 4.0!! Anyone wanting to use cool new features (i.e. Everyone) will pay those additional $$ for that!

Apple is SO FLIPPING smart at milking money, SO SMART!

  • Rolling thunder… 🙂

Suggestion: in recent times you tend to focus on 2 wines at the time. Not particularly bad but aesthetics work by 3… Sub-suggestion: chose your two thunder potentials, than add bargain basement from the same group.

Coke. Real Coke, Coke Zero, Coke Plus – yes. Diet Coke – no. Best coke-coke across the World (and I tried many): Italian canned Coke. Try if there…

St.Joseph – never. (Ordering one now – your recommendation batting over few years is 90+% for me)

QOTD: Introvert – Tesla. Extrovert – GaryVee. (no, really, GaryVee 🙂 )

  • Braden G

The Coke here is Canada is awesome too man – not quite as sugary as the US.

  • allanj

Anyone ever tried Jolly Cola from denmark?

  • Jim C

    Pepsi

I usually walk right past the French wines but you are forcing me to stop to look for one of these two. They sound interesting.

  • Phredd3

Coke, and it isn't close. Pepsi doesn't taste nearly enough like battery acid. I used to have full sugar Coke, but I switched to Diet Coke during the New Coke fiasco.

QOTD: Favorite introvert is my wife. That's just too easy. Favorite extrovert is difficult. Probably my friend David.

Never had a St. Joseph. As always after one of your shows, I'm tempted. Got a good one for under 20 bones?

  • allanj

    Battery acid, very funny dude!

  • allanj

You should do. The Rhone Valley is rockin'

  • cerignola

I only buy Coca-Cola from mexico, readily available in the Chicago area, because it is made with real sugar, not high fructose corn syrup, one can really taste the difference. Do not settle for anything sweetened with high fructose corn syrup when alternatives are available!

  • aaroncello

Anthony Bourdain would have to be the extrovert. Though maybe traveling in countries he respects/reveres he becomes an interesting introvert.

  • Michael Campbell

extrovert: this guy i knew back in high school;fond of prison culture
introvert: i'm probably the best example of one I know

  • allanj

The first movie is one of my favourites. Great car chases, great humour, great music. Belushi was the greatest.

  • ChicagoMatt

Introvert: Howard Roark (if literary characters count)
Extrovert: Snooki (if MTV characters count)

  • JayZee13

Awesome! I must say I love Saint Joseph wine. The first I ever had was back in 2008 on my trip to the Northern Rhone. We visited Francois Villard and I had a couple Saint Joseph rouge wines and they were both excellent. I bought the Reflets on Cindy last night (Thanks, KMurph!) And I do love his Condrieu also.

    QOTD1: Coke!!!!
QOTD2: Favorite extrovert – how about GV. Favorite introvert – my wife.

  • Alvin

Favorite introvert would have to be the late, great Elliott Smith. Hmm, favorite extrovert…not including The GaryV himself, I'd have to say my old roommate.

  • I don't drink much pop but I'd choose Pepsi over Coke

I've never had any St Joseph wine but after this show I will be seeking some out. I'm really into gamey wines these days so I think it'll be right up my ally.

    Greatest introvert: Clint Eastwood
    Greatest extrovert: Howard Stern

  • Introvert: Henry Chinaski
    Extrovert: My dad

  • St Cosme makes a damned delicious St Joseph

  • Mini Q 1: Coke

Mini Q 2: I've had 0 wines from St Josef

QOTD: favorite introvert is Martin Buber (author)
    favorite extrovert is my uncle
