Sound seemed a bit muffled for the guest so couldn’t get too much of what he was saying. Shame

Thank you moderators!!! Get that Shoe pusher out of here!

  • cellarrat5

I think that might be the third time he has refrenced her in as many episodes! Stick to what you know most GV!!

I thought her name was “Lady Gag-Gag”.

Try letting them age longer than 15 min – these wines typically need at least 5-6 years (“freak” vintages like 2003 excepted) and many don’t really hit their stride until age 10. If you must drink a CdP on release, you might try decanting it 24 hours before you serve; alcohol will dissipate (to some extent). Best wishes!

    G,
With the show’s budget on wine alone, surely a lapel-mic is within reach! Very taxing to have to listen with one hand on the volume knob. The show itself, however, continues to be a blast!

  • BrettFavre

That was great.. appeals to the nerds among us.

  • tommyb2

CNDP: haven't had the time, experience or money to delve into this area unfortunately, sounds as if I am missing out though, had maybe 3-4 in my life so really can't comment on the overall standard!

  • jayhitek

Good guest. 15% alcohol and it's not too much for him? I would be black out after 3 glasses.

  • Cool_Dave

Hey Gary awesome guest yet again!!!
    Love the Pape!
Love the two parters. Sorry fellow Vayniacs.

  • Cool_Dave

Too much fruit? For me there is no such thing.

  • Cool_Dave

Me too. Though not that young anymore and I don't know crap about wine. Yet!

  • Cool_Dave

Yes. More Rhone please. * In a small Oliver Twist kinda' voice*

  • Hey Gary, met you at your “expand your pallet” seminar in Boston. Check your email sent from djammalo on Jan 26th. Patricia wants to take you up on your challenge… More info is in your email. 😉

Funny you should mention, I just bought a La Vieile Ferme white wine. The Cotes du Luberon something or other. I hope it is as good as you say.
At this point a Chateauneuf du Pape week is in order. Gary, hook us up!

  • Cool_Dave

Yea, I dig the halvesies too.

  • Cool_Dave

    Oops! Too late! : )

  • NY Pete

you guys love to keep the masses waiting … dontcha?

  • well, he is from the Netherlands, the beer there is usually 6-9 % and they like Jenever a sort of Rum malt wine with 10-20% recidual sugar and that's 40-50% alcohol. 🙂

  • Jens

NY Pete: I'm also waiting — and here in Copenhagen it's way past midnite!

  • same her in Sweden. what's the hold up? Mott took an early weekend 😉

  • guymandude

Wow part 2 looks just like part 1

  • kylemittskus

    Mott!!! Get your life together!

    Sorry for yelling.

  • Mott

    My life is together.

  • Mott

Hold on I'm playing a mean hand of solitaire.

  • Rich

I've been collecting wine since 1990, and because I've always gone to tastings, and because I've stored my wines at a wine storage place where I've been lucky enough to make some a lot of friends who had the bankroll to where I've been able to taste the 'upper echelon' of wines, it has made my knowledge of wine quite considerable as well. There is always something new to learn about wine. I'm sure Gary Vaynerchuk learns something new about wine with each new guest or different wine as well. That's the whole thing about wine, theres always something new to learn. It's alive, it changes, and of course, the people who talk about it makes the subject of wine wonderful. So it doesn't really matter if you're young or old, there is always something new to learn, which is probably the reason I like wine so much anyway! 😉

  • Man, Solitaire att 7 pm, what's your wife thinking about that. I have to go to bed to get some shuteye at all. It's 01.10 here

  • audiofan

Good luck! Have had all of Charbonniere's '03s and have not been that impressed. I do believe that the heat of the vintage makes the wines a little flabby. I would drink them on the young side, as you are doing. Hope your experience is better than mine!

  • Mott

I'm still at work here at the WL

  • JasonGonzales

Dude, who doesn't LOVE Mott's avatar??!! I just feel like I understand him so much more because of it. I wonder if he's a Simpsons guy.

  • audiofan

How many/what producers have you tasted? I've been buying CdP since the '85 vintage, and the '07s have that one quality that makes a great vintage: balance. Fruit, acidity, tannin…about as perfect as it gets. They said the same thing about '82 Bordeaux, and I wish I could have a “do-over” on that one (Latour was $56 on the futures market as I recall)!

  • missatiejacket

    I've never done this before, but … where's part 2 ????

  • Katie Marquez

I loved this episode. I had to watch it a little differently than usual (at work while working vs. on my couch with a snack and the baby) but it was great. (Actually that was kind of fun–a nice wordy informative (less spastic, but those are fun too) episode.)

Man if I had 70 dollars to spend on that book! (I just finished The Wine Bible recently and LOVED it. I've been looking for another encyclopedic volume of wine-ness to peruse.) I must say, I love CdP. I had my first bottle a few months back (a 2005) that was so delicious. It is the first bottle of wine I've ever had that I can still at this moment remember exactly what it tasted like. It was so different than anything I'd ever had before (and honestly a little nicer than anything I've ever had. Had to apologize to my husband for buying a bit out of our wine price range on that one). But let me tell you! Yum!

By the way: this video was one of the first times when I wanted to say, “nice color”. I don't know if it was the height of the glasses and how well (or how high up) you were able to swirl, but even on my work computer screen it looked exactly like the color of a fresh pomogranate. Thank you. This was fun. Can't wait for part II.

  • Bender rules! Maybe there is a little Bender in me 😉 Simpsons, not so much but I do like the show.

  • hollisdevillo

yeah, nice color indeed. i noticed that too.

  • hollisdevillo

loved the bit around 18 min, where you give the analogy of the mother raising different children differently, then you look at the camera with a sly look as if to say, “that's right boys, you can use that one.”

  • thewinebuff

Had a CNP last night and hope I just drank it too early – reminded me of eating gravel. Not always a bad thing, but there was nothing but gravel.. euughhh…

  • plcb

In my wine tasting class, this week we covered France. From Rhone they offered us the Parallel 45 to taste. What!!!! I complained that they could have chosen this, that, the other, etc. What can I say, it's the plcb.

  • Love the nerd factor of this discussion! As you were talking I was pulling up satellite pics of chateauneuf du pape, searching the availability of CnDP at winelibrary, and checking cellartracker for user comments. Love it!

  • JoNathan4

hey man, i love watching your reviews, but i got to ask, what's up with the same shirt in the last couple of episodes.

  • Pete G

Break out the black glasses with medical tape in the middle cuz the nerds are in the house!
Awesome guest/show. Maybe the first guest in my memory who came out shouting off
the description of the wine right after the glass dropped. Definetely not candid about his opinions.

  • DCaragher

I was pumped to see this guy on the show…good start to a two-parter!

  • Hahahaha Karis is my new favorite “Dutch wine geek”. What a Renaissance man genius.

  • JayZee13

Part 1 started off a bit slowly, but the guest is growing on me. He has a lot of knowledge and passion on CDP. I really love CDPs and don't have nearly enough in my cellar (all Gary's fault!!). 🙂

  • Just_me

What year, what producer? Sounds like 2005 (or maybe 6) to me – dry and dusty early.

In general though, even early these are rich fruity wines – partly due to the nature of grenache and Syrah, partly due to the ripening of the region.

I am covered in wine half the day, literally. Working at a winery has taught me about humility, the knowledge dichotomy and the fact that the more you think you know the less you actually know. And it has also taught me that there is as big a wine tasting spectrum as there are people on this earth and Vanifera varietals.

  • cellarrat5

I think they are coming back with a new season or two! I could see you being a little Bender eusq Mott!!

  • JasonGonzales

Mott, Simpsons or not, you are the man! Thanks for the reply. I feel like I've finally touched greatness!!

  • JasonGonzales

    No doubt.

  • pawncop

Excellent episode. looking forward to part II.

  • great show gary, very interesting
