Sound seemed a bit muffled for the guest so couldn’t get too much of what he was saying. Shame

Note to self: Get that book.

    Looking forward to part deux.

Great episode so far Gary, love seeing guests on your show that really know their stuff.

  • The New King of Pape

    Love the region.
    Interesting Guest.
    Good looking book.
That is a solid show Gary.

    GV-

Very good show. I really dig those guests that are wealth of information. Helps me absorb more. Knowledge is king. Looking forward to the second half.

My first reaction was to think this wasn't going to be a very good episode. I warmed up to this guy as time went on however. Well played.

  • vpass64

This episode took a little different approach. That book looks very cool. The good old Dutch. I can see him and Gary's Dad hanging out. Great wine, great people, and great conversation. That's what its all about.

Good show cant wait for part two. Have been watching past episodes and finally found out what the number on the chalk board was all about. Are you still doing this project? If so let me know cause I do live in the wonderful napa valley and would love to help out. I just finished my first harvest with Girard this past harvest and made my own wine as well. Keep up the good work

  • BuddhaChu

This episode was a yawner for me and I fell asleep on the couch during it. Maybe it was because this was the first episode I watched via MediaFly on my Roku (wheeeee!…I found it finally!).

Lovin it G! The Chat de Pape I have is melowing in the rack because the first bottle was tooooo dark and mysterious. It's a Clos des Brusquieres 07 that may need a couple years. I can't wait, I'll open it when you drop part deux! What to eat with it?

  • I'll guess he has worked hard at all his jobs. Rich trust fund “kids” are hard to find i the Netherlands

GREAT Chateauneuf episode #1!! I'm a huge fan of the southern Rhone, and although I usually buy from the more value-driven appelations (Vaqueras, Gigondas, Vinsobres, Cotes du Ventoux, Rasteau) I have actually visited Chat. du Pape and fell in love with the Mistrall winds, the gallets, the gnarly old vines, and the passionate vignerons. Can't wait for episode #2!!

    Gary
Thanks for the interview. I pre-orderd the book. It is amazing in its depth on the region. I have been collecting the wines since the 78 vintage (now all gone.) I find the wines are to my liking with about 10-12 years of age as they still retain their primary fruits and they also have a nice aged aromatic with hints of leather, earth and lavender. I urge all to hold these wines and avoid consuming them in their youth if you can.

  • Great show. Really enjoyed it.

    Lady Gaga is listenable?

Dude, I hope you expand your musical palate.

  • zman15

CDPs are great! I do like getting them in the half bottle which allows me to sample more and rumor has it they age a little faster but not sure it that's totally proven.

  • Domdomi

that is so interresting in your episode, is not a lot a the extreme qualitiy of Chateauneuf du Pape, but the “poetic” and “philosophic” work around grappes all the vintage, and the sensibility of the wine maker, because and you explain very well Gary, same terroir, different owner, different vintage, made different wine in a same location!! and that the different between a not too bad wine, and a inforgatable wine. personnaly i a Rayas man.
    Thanks Gary and Harry also.

  • Thomas_DK

I usualy skip over your guest-shows, but boy that was a great show with both personality and knowledge. best guest since the german sommalier… looking forward to the Pegaü

  • SourGrapesFC

this sounds good. I was thinking of making a beef stew this weekend, but I might have to go with a bird instead (there will be plenty of red wine either way).

  • SourGrapesFC

I’m sure Mott would love re-numbering all the shows to reflect the new system.

  • Personally, I LOVE CdP and southern Rhone. It is primarily all I drink and my CT shows that. I drink the really cheap, La Vieille Ferme all the way to the Ch. de Beaucastel. I really love that you had Mr. Karis on because I put this book on my wish list for this year.

In fact, last night I drank a bottle of La Vieille Ferme (made by the Perrin family) with my DiGiorno pizza and I can tell you the grenache shines even in this $5.99 bottle with huge cranberry/cherry jam flavors. I plan to open a 2003 Domaine Bois de Boursan CdP on Valentine's Day. And I'm waiting until next summer to try my 1999 Beaucastel. It should be important to note all of the grapes made in CdP: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Muscardin, Counoise, Vaccarese, Terret Noir and the whites: Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Rousanne, Picpoul, Picardan.

Another important thing to note about CdP is their success with Rose.

I can't wait for Part II of this video. The last three episodes have all been about really strong French wine regions. I'm hoping you will give the rest of southern Rhone a chance and bring out Vacqueyras, Gigondas, CdR Villages, Tavel and Beaumes de Venise (perhaps you have, I have not watched all 800 videos).

  • nita

LOoOOOOOve Chateauneuf-du-Pape! The French know how to make wine!
Thank you for bringing such great sutff to the people who REALLY want to know and who CARE about wine. Im going to buy the book! (the CDP book, I already have yours Gary)
    Cant wait for part II.

  • tooch

Fantastic show guys. I'm a big fan of Southern Rhone blends, and have really enjoyed getting more involved and invested in the region over the past 18 months. Simply put, Harry's book is a work of art…such an incredible resource for all us “Rhone Heads” out there.

Gary, I know your fascination and passion about pointing customers in the direction of value driven wines, but I feel that there has been some neglecting the Southern Rhone. It's quite clear that you can find world class cuvees for under $30, and some of the finest wines in the world under $100/bottle. Would love to see you increase your focus on this region!

  • tooch

I don't get how people could find this boring. If you truly have a passion for wine, hearing two experts discuss a region in this much depth is nothing less than fascinating.

  • tobymarcus

Just a thoguht Gary, you should try to do a couple vertical tastings!

  • Interesting episode and while the quality of CdP is undeniable, the price point of $50 is the range that is not selling right now. Every retailer I have talked to says the price break is $30 and I tend to agree. That is where I am on buying right now. I have CdP’s that are in that range and that is what I am buying but it’s nice to be geeky once in a while.
    So GV
    Are you buying an Ipad?

  • How did an obvious spam sbbshoe128 get in here?

  • thewinebuff

Hey Gary. Finally stopped my lurking… As there's no QOTD, thought Id post a suggestion – volume needs to go up. I watch in my wine shop and have b/ground music going on and some guests too quiet. May be my dodgy hearing mind ;P. BTW – check out my wine blog bloopers… http://www.viddler.com/explore/Richfinn/videos/2/

    Love Julien Barrot.

  • Looking forward to part two!

  • allanj

    Killer guest!
    Great conversation!
    Great vino!
    Who could ask for more?
My prediction is that the next wine will blow the roof of Gary's head!
Yoda, may the force be with you!

  • cellarrat5

Really? At least TRY and seem interested in the content, there is a difference between shamelessly plugging products and plugging products.

  • allanj

A biiiiiiiiiig steak, that's what i would do. Clos des Brusquieres isn't that from Charbonnière?
Their Mourre des Perdrix is absolutely fantastic!

  • allanj

    Goble Goble… What?

  • late_start

    nice episode GV

  • cellarrat5

These guests that have their hand on the pulse of the wine industry are invaluable sources of information. I have always enjoyed hearing people talk that know way more than I do on any particular topic, as long as hey don't talk AT me. My enology is solid, but I am young, and do not have the bankroll to do as much upper echelon tasting as I would like. Therefore these shows are a learning tool for me. Keep it up, guest or no guest, 12 minute shows or 30 as long as there is content and a little GV I'm in.

  • jason carey

07 is oh so over rated.. to soft.. to flabby.. too much fruit.. they won't age.

  • Pirata Cofresi

Excellent episode so far, very informative and substantial, I appreciate that and I thank you Gary and your distinguished guest, may the force be with you both!!

I really value guests like this, which have spend years getting to know a region or an AC in detail. Really looking forward part 2.

Just made my mouth water, and a I'm about to open a bottle of Domaine de la Charbonniere, the Cuvee Mourre de Perdrix, is a 2003 but looking forward to finding out what they did with the heat of that year and that vintage. I think it should be approachable now. I have had it for 3 or 4 years in my cellar.

    Thanks again!

    Pirata

  • Richie

    Looking good!

  • jason carey

This just shows you that the great status hunt of the American Psyche is sad. Wine should be based on love of it, not on how much it costs or how rare.

  • Anonymous

Most of us loved the show GV.

  • Rich

Yes, 375ml bottles do age faster than 750ml bottles, and the 750ml bottles age faster than 1500ml magnums. It’s all based on the ratio of the air on the top of the bottle compared to what’s in the bottle.:)

  • Rich

We totally loved the show Gary!

  • Go Saints!!! Sorry about your Jets, Gary! I work for the NFL in NYC. Do you want a tour of HQ? It would be best if we do it before the SuperBowl! You can checkout the SuperBowl Trophy and all the SB rings.

  • allanj

You're in for a treat. Mourre is A-W-E-S-O-M-E!
