Gerry and the Mets – do me a favour!

Line of the day – ‘A 6ft 9 doorman at a NY club…you’re not getting by him’

Didn’t do it for me although GV lightened the mood late doors and that tickled me

Again really like this guy. A real rennasaince man when you look at his background. I mean
who puts out a GIANT Cosmo Kramer coffee table book about CDP? The guy's awesome.

QOTD: It's GV's passion about stuff like football that makes him who he is. He is a down
to earth guy who brings a “real worldness” to an oftentimes stuffy wine world.

  • Pete G

    Sorry that's “renaissance” (one n two s)

  • Phil G

Nice two-part episode. The guest seems like the type of guy that I'd want to hang out with for awhile – have a good meal, drink some wine, talk about music. Love the passion for CDP, great wines and a really beautiful area as well. The book is a little expensive, though…

QOTD – I like the Gary is a big Jets fan. I live in the NY area and enjoy the NFL. Don't have a huge affiliation to any specific team, but can appreciate loyalty to the boys in green. I will say, though, that, in my opinion, the Jets were over-achievers this season and it was good that they got to the AFC Champ game, but they were not the better team. In 1998, they were a GREAT team and should have beaten the Broncos. They were better then them (in my mind) and would have also won the super bowl over Atlanta, for sure! That 1998 team underachieved, for sure.

    How about those Yankees?

  • adrums

I hate the Yankees (see below).

  • CharlieTN

I don't care about the Jets, but

I love that Gary loves them! It definitely adds to the character of the show, and this playoff run was much fun. As for the Mets… F— 'em. I'm a Braves fan.

  • The D

Great episode, great guest. The book is incredible, especially in it's attention to detail.

  • Jens

Gary, I enjoy Champagne but have difficulties tasting, i.e. reaching the wine “behind the bubbles”, if you understand what I mean. Try once to explain your fascination to the Vaynernation.

Great show. I am just getting back from Iraq, and am looking forward to drinking wines again. Chateauneuf du Pape looks very interesting and something to explore. Thanks for another great show.

QOTD: I love that you are such a big fan of the Jets. My wife is just like that with the Vikings, and probably felt very much like you did Sunday night. Don't ever give up on your passions.

  • DPnCali

Thank you for your service. Glad you made it back safely.

  • Great show/two-parter. Love the guest. I had wine-envy watching the two of you drinking these wines. I just had an '06 du-Pape at a wedding that I am kicking myself for not writing down what it was…grrr!

QOTD – Jet's? Never heard of 'em 😛

  • Welcome back and thanks for doing what you do. I'm sure your wife is glad to have you home.

  • But that's why people like following sports and their favorite team. They enjoy the competition and struggle their favorite team faces with each and every game.

  • gubbiotti

    awesome awesome awesome!
i love the shop talk, no BS and straight talk jivin. i think it is the first time too that you have had a collector on… a real collector.
    great show
btw – the sound seemed low on this?
qotd – gv, you can rave about swedish poetry all you want. i am here for the wine, vin, vino, wein.
    have a good weekend

  • It's always fun to watch people geeking out over some subject, even if it is one that I know very little about…

QOTD: The just talk seems to be a big part of Gary's personality, and the show wouldnt be what it is without that.

  • DCaragher

Great show…I've been meaning to get a look at that book and dig in! Such a great area, now I just need more experience with it!

QOTD: Simply put…I don't care what it is, if I can see your passionate about something, not matter what it is, it's flippin' sweet!

  • Thank u for what you do for us!

I stopped getting email notifications when you did this new disqus thing. I don’t get the emails letting me know when the show is posted anymore.

    Did you stop doing that??

  • Agree 100000000000% It is what happened to me with the Yankees and Rangers

  • Agreed!

  • adrums

If Red Sox (or Jets) fans are like lonely, zit-faced teenage boys, Yankees fans are like Wilt Chamberlain or Hugh Hefner.

maybe we need to be tweetered. I just hit refresh when I’m waiting 18 hours for part dos.

  • ace

Gary, you always score the wine but not the Pagu, why?

  • ace

do you love The Jets Gary, i thougt you hated them beacuse you spit in a Jets basket, sometimes a helmet.

  • Anonymous

Well….. that may be a good idea……but all I know is for years I have been getting emails on everyshows posting……and now since this new format I haven’ received one.

  • bemrico

So I guess I'm over it. I haven't seen and episode since gary shit talked sf / had the lamest guest ever on the show. Please bring quality guests like Harry Karis on the show. WHere do we go from here…..

  • Good to have you back in the states! Was there a zero-wine rule while you were stationed there?

  • And what was your take on both of those 07s??

  • Very nice show with a very knowledgeable guest. I will need to check out his book and it is amazing to have that much information on one area.

QOTD: I feel that Gary's passion about the Jets is “normal” to blokes like myself and I understand where he is coming from. It's part of our DNA.

  • It’s Finnish, so I apologize my bad English =)

  • Ps. Have you seen a champagne bottle being opened with a glass, what about a butter knife or a snowboard? If you want to see what that looks like check this out www(dot)vimeo(dot)com(slash)8858953 also in the end of the clip you will see a classic Formula 1 type of opening. =P

  • rieslingrich

    Im a LAKER fan, we're always happy…

  • DPnCali

I agree that our passion for our football team is part of our DNA. I just feel that maybe GV's DNA made him gravitate towards the wrong team. 😉 And can I just say…LETS GO COLTS and lets stop those Saints from marching to the Lombardi!!! In fact, lets STOMP those Saints into must!!

  • Great show, Harry, Gary (aka Jerry)!!!!

I've recently tasted a couple of CduPaps at a local wine store in Palo Alto where they sometimes pour Vieux Telegraph.. Very good wine.. I just bought a bottle of the white, CduPap which I am told is great.. will save for special occasion.

Hurry up and try one of the white CduPaps, Gary!

QofTD: Mets, Jets, whatever. Love the passion.

  • I totally saw that too! Same principle of opening, just a different tool involved.

  • allanj

Wow! Both were great. Saint Jean being my favourite 92 p. A BIG beefy wine, with firm tannins, but not agressive at all. Sabon a more classic chateauneuf, a little tighter & lighter. A solid 90 p. Saint Jean is modern in style & an extremely sexy wine. I thought it was the grenache that did that, but the Sabon actually had 5% more grenache in it.
Both could probably last 20+ years in the cellar.
So Rhone '07, the things i've tasted so far have been top stuff.

  • allanj

    Rhone '07: Go get it!
Tasted last night: Clos Saint Jean standard Chateauneuf 92 p. in my little book.
Roger Sabon Les Olivet a solid 90 p.

And the winner is Clos Saint Jean!

Gary in the near future, some rioja please…?!?! : )

  • frank

no problem with garys passion for the jets. the passion is cultivated by years of pain being a die hard fan during the lean years ! i should know i've been a pats fan since they played at fenway, thank god for the good years and great guests like philippe

  • JiminAtlanta

I am fine with Jerry having a passion for the Mets. At times in my life I have been passionate about teams (not the Mets or the Jets) – unfortunately not right now. I will have to check out the book because I very much enjoy CDP and the southern Rhone region.

  • Cool_Dave

QOTD — Gary's Jets passion is a cross we must all bear. ; )

  • That's interesting. I had a half bottle of Clos des Brusquieres at my birthday dinner a little while ago. I agree it was big at first…the last sip for me at the end brought the most fruit to the palette.

  • Anonymous

I also had a bottle of Clos des Busquieres a couple days ago and it is still to tough for me to reccomend. Dark bitter chocolate.

  • Great two-parter. The book's already added on to my Wish List! 🙂

QOTD: Jerry's Mets, CdP, Gary's Jets…passion is all the same. If someone wanted to talk about drywall with the same amount of passion, I might be inclined to watch it. Being from the NY/NJ area makes it also far easier for me to listen to Jets talk, since I like to support the home team.

  • In addition to coffee, wine is another love of mine! This is my first time to WLTV! I learned about it via Gary's new book. This is great! (I'll be looking for $20ish wine though, $129 is a bit steep for this alterpreneur!)

  • SeattleSteveW

QOTD: As Elton John once sang “B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets”

  • Anonymous

No problem. Having folks from all over the world talk with us English only folks about wine is so great. We all feel guilty that we can’t speak at least one other language.

  • kv47

Gr8 show, fun and educational. My first post here. Am just gettin in to wine and discovering my wine preferences. Plannin to try 3-4 shiraz's blind soon, shld be fun. kind of difficult to get into the wines you review on da show though as here in india most of them arent available or if they are, then after import duties they are crazy expensive.

QOTD – Jets support is cool, totally relate to it. Man Utd fan myself and right now life's lookin pretty darn good!!!

  • harrykaris

Thanks all of you for the very kind and encouraging comments – I really appreciate a lot.
GARY, again sorry for the 'blooper' …….. thank you so much for the show, a great experience and I really enjoyed your company.

  • angelatcarlson

    Hey Guys,

For me, professional sports are, meah.
However, I love the passion and that's why I'm here.
Picked up a case of entry-level '07 CdP at work: Cellier du Rhone that was marked down
from $19.99 to $9.99. It definitely needs some air and is a whole diffferent animal than a big Cali Cab, but I like it! Worked great with a well-seasoned steak during the holidays. My co-worker Adam did an experiment where he left it open for 3 days and then came back.
He said the flavors of black friuts and spices were great and this trick would simulate a good 3-4 yrs of bottle aging. It's so nice having another wine geek in the store : )

  • allanj

You're welcome…. The blooper was great, great fun.
    Good luck with your book.
    Cheers!

  • JayZee13

Very nice show and one of the best bloopers ever on WLTV! So, Jerry, I am kind of tired of your talk about the Mets all the time, but I do love your passion for such things and I like your style. As for CDP, I had a bunch of 2000, 2001 and 2003 CDPs over the years that were very good. I like Vieux Telegraph La Crau when I can afford it. I also bought 4 different 2007 CDPs from Wine Lib and now, like Tom Petty said, “The waiting is the hardest part.”
