Gerry and the Mets – do me a favour!

Line of the day – ‘A 6ft 9 doorman at a NY club…you’re not getting by him’

Didn’t do it for me although GV lightened the mood late doors and that tickled me

good to see you on the who dat bandwagon. did you ever find out the meaning to who dat? and where did the new orleans show you filmed go? i would like to see it, so i can remember what you said about saints then. great show!

  • This is by far my favorite region-specific show you have ever done. The witty and educational banter between you two is genius….I would have watched for another hour or two, and would have continued to pick up more and more Rhone details.

And any wine review on a Chateauneuf du Pape that somehow manages to include the quote “hey, I like Lady Gaga…” is instant classic. Thanks Jerry, and good luck with the Mets.

  • You are awesome! And I just bought the book!

  • The second part to the CDP episode was well worth it. We appreciated the banter between HK and GV. As for the love of the Jets, we all have our passions. No matter which sports teams we follow (fanatically) we all love vino. That's why we're here. Cheers!

  • RANDINTHECITY

    GARY!!!
    Harry!!

    I love Chat du Pape!

I thought more ppl DO consider stemming and what they shd do before the final blend…maybe Im naive?

    Great guest, very interesting…

QOTD: I love the Jets..always have..always will…its a life thing.. LOL So Im thrilled Gary is such a passionate fan! Plus, he's so funny about it, even when he's not trying to be! 😉

Thnx for the Ustream shoutout..Love you! Sorry if I led you to say outloud where you were staying.. I hope ppl stopped calling you! LOLOL 😉

  • RANDINTHECITY

Gary, I have problems w/Disqus…double entries, cant edit, cant sign on other than as guest…maybe its just ME? 🙁

  • frankvx

    great show, gentlemen !
qotd : i'm from belgium, i couldn't care less about your football, but i respect someone's passion
ps : mister v, kasha is roasted buckwheat
    frank

  • LOL I'm sure you've been called worse. I think it's great you're so passionate about your Jets.

Hmm, that’s odd. I am pretty new to WLTV and I do get that email that lets me know that a new episode is up, so no they haven’t stopped doing that. Has to be some other problem.

  • SamKw

I have no problem with Jerry's enthusiasm for the Mets.
On the other hand, Gary and the Jets? Let me think about this one 😉

  • SamKw

    Thanks for a great show!

  • teckdeck2008

Great guest and I loved his approach to wine.
Qotd: Dude I love that your passionate about the Jets. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Cowboys fan. But everyone needs something in life that gets them excited and stuff like that. So I support your passion on a certain level.

  • Grill Factor

Really cool guest with a great attitude.

QOTD: Passion is good but I never understood people becoming really intense fans for 1 team beyond city/state/country pride. I always played sports, including at the division 1 college level and was never a really intense fan for any team. Most of my college teamates were the same. What makes people really intense fans for their team??

Fun show…as are all the CdP's. It's really fun to watch Gary progress in his interviewing skills. We used to rip on him so bad, but he knows what he's doing now.

QOTD: I enjoy the Jets banter. Not a Jets fan, nor would I consider them a rival to my Vikes (especially not after last weekend), so the passion makes the show more fun and interesting. Wine is no longer the only reason I watch the show…let's put it that way.

  • bfr1028

I have a question for the Nation! I am by no means an expert at wine and dont think i have had a spoiled bottle untill today. My question is how do you know if your bottle of wine is bad! I just opened a 2002 Brolio Chianti Classico and it is awfull. Smells like bad foot meets beet juice and tastes real sharp and strong… Thanks for your help

I liked this show a lot. I actually like the longer shows, especially with a guest like this one. I like the format of internet video that are not snippets or sound bites. WLTV, TWIST, KPCS…

QOTD: I once posted a comment about talking too much about football. BUT If I have to listen to Gary talk about the Jets…(not a big football fan)…, then I am OK with that as long as he talks about something else. If it were just a football show, i.e. Football.tv…then no I would not watch. Thank goodness, he talks about wine, too. 😀

  • Oakmon’s BF

We share a dislike for the Giants (sorry Chris). ?The enemy of my enemy is my friend? ? Arabian proverb

  • Thank you so much for the show. Keep up the good work!
    Greetings from Holland. 😉

  • I like the long eps as well. Good conversation about delicious matter.

About the Jets… well, here in Holland I don't have to do ANYTHING with Football or the Jets, so I don't follow the excitement. But i don't find it annoying. I love the 85 gag by the way.

    Cheers,
    Sander

The Australia bashing needs to stop, I am putting my foot down! Its too easy, and Australian wines are good if you know where your palate lies and are not blinded by the light.

  • SS_Chris

Gary, I usually email you when you forget to score a wine, but with this new interactive Comments section, I'll try it here so that your response will be logged with the Episode. Others have mentioned this, but you forgot to score the PEGAU….which I need for the Gary Scores SPREADSHEET. Please respond to this comment. Thanks….hoping you, Lizzie and Meesh are all doing well.

  • SS U need an avatar/icon here 🙂 I would go 93+

  • tobymarcus

QOTD: A person expressing passion, of any (reasonable) kind, is always fun to see/watch…(even though I am a big NYG fan) keep it up!

  • QOTD: I love how much you love the Mets, Jerry! You would be far less entertaining if you didn't love something besides wine. It makes wine drinks seem a whole lot less like snob sas well. I could care less about the Jets, but its nice to see SOMEONE care about them.

  • SS_Chris

    Wow…quick response…..thanks!!! I'll add a picture of KAHUNA 🙂 🙂

  • ewb

QOTD: Talk Jets as much as you want!

  • ewb

    Solid show.

just testing that the avitar works….

    Keith-
There are several things that can happen to a wine after bottling that could potentially create off aromas or spoilage. The usual suspects as far as I can tell are cork taint, which usually involves a wet cardboard smell that will not dissipate no matter how much you decant. There are also problems with moldy cork, unusually high Volatile Acidity (VA), heat spoilage, which can manifest many different off odors colors or tastes in the wine. Chances are the wine you tried had some combination of improper storage conditions or perhaps heat exposure. That being said it would be very hard to pinpoint what actually happened. The best way to tell is if you have had the producer or vintage before and it just tastes “off”. I am sure someone else might be able to answer your question more thoroughly, but this is a start.

  • cellarrat5

Decent conclusion, although I must admit I liked the first half better, much ore detail on the production and specification regarding enology of the area. Nerd it up, I love it!! VERY knowledgeable gentlemen, he has tasted and bought some ridiculously old Vino!

QOTD: I understand the game of football but am by no means a big fan. Nothing can be said that hasn?t about passion gusto etc, but I don?t mind the Jets cheerleading at all. Its part and parcel of the WLTV experience.

  • waynooooo da winoooooo

Yo Jerry, Knock-Yurself-Out wit da Mets !!!!!!!!!!!!! :o)

  • Ilse

QOTD : as long as gary (or should I say Jerry???) once in a while talks about basketball as well, I'm not too bothered…I think it's great that someone 1/ has a passion and 2/is not afraid to show it, in good and bad times!

A comment really concerning the first part of this show : I'm living in Spain and a lot of Spanish wines also have high alcohol % (14-15)…my brother is another Dutch (speaking) (I'm Belgian, Flemish) wine lover and he used to comment about high alcohol levels. I've made a habit of giving him “surprise” Spanish wine packets for birthdays and so, and I must say that his favourites of these packets recently are all 14-14.5% wines. Very often, the unsofisticated (as quantity used to be more important than quality in a lot of Spanish regions) wines would have 16 or higher %, but nowadays, a good winemaker follows up better the picking times of the grapes and the wine making techniques and a lot of these 14-15% wines now are actually nice, warm wines. I even say that a lot of lower alcohol % wines from the same regions lack that warmth…

    Awesome!

  • MelbaLI

Jerry (or as he is known in the witness protection program as Gary) loves the NY Mets
    <——————————this much——————————->

    😀

  • 🙂

  • If only CDPs were less expensive…

QOTD: Love it. No One-Trick Ponies.

  • SamKw

The only way to really know is to compare it with a second bottle, preferably from a different source.

Having said that, however, tasting notes by critics and CellarTracker users might be able to help you speculate whether the bottle you have is “off.” People may agree or disagree on whether they like a particular wine or not, but you can usually put together everything that's been said and get a rough idea of how it's supposed to taste.

    Hi Grill Factor,
Yes, Im asked to login each time..but then it goes to “guest”
i dunno.. not such a big deal, I guess.

  • corkscrew

Once again very enjoyable, interesting guest….just get any furture guests a mic so we don't miss any of their insights. One positive of this recession is that wines like CDP are actually afforable, not for everyday drinking, but to purchase some and put them away for special occassions. I can enjoy Cotes du Rhone wines as a everyday wine and experience the similiar flavors of CDP without breaking the bank. As far as Gary (Jerry, Barry, Larry, Harry) and the Jets go, passion is passion, whether it's wine or sports, it's either in your blood or it's not. http://www.winelx.com

  • ChicagoMatt

Could have called him harry caray in response to the Mets/Jets/Jerry.

QOTD: Love the football discussion…and I love when GV talks to Mott about current events between wines. Need to keep the show multi-faceted. Go Colts.

  • Dima

QOTD: Absolutely bores me. I am an American, born and bred in Cleveland, and I have to say that American football is a boring game, with dudes way too covered in armor and with too many rules. Play stop and starts over trivialities. Big, supposedly strong men cry over minor infractions (facemask, or something? boo whoo whoo).

Why can't these people learn a real sport like rugby? American football is contrived and only survives because the stop and start nature of it allows more commercials to be shown.

Can't there be any better time spent than watching men push each other around with the chance that one of these fat losers manages to catch a ball or run through a pile of other losers? Really?

  • Rich

Not a big Chateauneuf drinker, but I can say this— THERE IS NEVER ENOUGH TALK ABOUT THE JETS… as a season ticket holder since 1968 a PSL purchaser, and a traveler to both San Diego and Indy, (and also Denver 10 years ago) you can run your whole show on the JETS and I would be fine with that.

  • bfr1028

It Had a vinigar esk smell and taste, im assuming most red wines have a shelf life of atleast 8 years. I wonder if the store will take it back. Thanks for the reply's. Maybe gary can do a show on how to tell if your bottle has been tainted?

    Keith

  • bfr1028

Thank you for the info … Ill have to look into it.

  • cellarrat5

From how you are describing the taste, it does sound like the bottle was “off” in some way. It depends on the retailer regarding return policy. All Reds do not necissaraly age for 8 years. This depends on several factors, some of the most important being varietal, Tannin content and the winemaker?s personal style. Check with the store and see if you can get another one, or try a different retailer. It is very possible that it was improperly stored.

  • jbgoode

Gary, Interesting you scored both wines 93+ one priced at 50 bones and one at 125, perhaps the Vaniacs would like to hear from you why they should pay the extra 75 dollars for the Pegu. ????

  • SS_Chris

johhnny B, GV actually scored the Giraud a 92/93. You're question is still valid…..and going by Gary's scores, the Giraud is the better QPR. Although at the end of the day, you need to see which tasting note is more appealing to your palate.

  • jbgoode

And ones wallet. The two scored so close but cost significantly different. That is the point.

  • Riverino

Another corking episode – well done Harry and Jerry!

QOTD: As an englishman far away on the other side of the pond, i've always enjoyed your passion for the Jets, not that i have much of a clue about NFL. Perhaps Gary should stat to form an allegiance to UK soccer side?!
