Agree, very frustrating trying to get a decent value Burgundy.

I have thought that at times about napa wines especially in the more value price point they just seem to think that if you put napa on it it will be good

I’m going to have to agree with you here about recent disappointments concerning the QOTD. I too was all gung-ho about finding a new job, having been let go from my last one due to slow business, and just ended up frustrated and pissed off. But what are ya gonna do right…just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Cedric could’ve been the MAN! He got in trouble and injured or something. Great memories. Great analogy G!

Hey Gary – Longtime lurker, first time poster.

I just wanted to let you know that I was watching a youtube clip on David Chang from the Momofuku restaurant group, and saw your mug at a table in his restaurant late night. I’ll include the link below, but I just wanted to let you know that it didn’t go unnoticed!

QOD to Garyvee – If your passion for wine is a 10 out of 10, what is it for food?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sw7nS-iYdD0&feature=related (11:40ish)

In response to your questions – I don’t think I’ve ever had a petite sirah, and, after this episode, I’m in no real hurry to run out and find one!

    Thanks for all you do.

  • Love your show Gary – Thanks for dumbing down the wines! Appreciate it. Been watching for a while and the other night I even surprised myself at an dinner out when I was able to discuss red wines on a level not previously do-able for me. So hats off and thanks for your help.

Just starting to get into PS due to some hype at CW. I know Buffalo Lou will be interested in this show…like seeing this varietal reviewed, bc your findings in this episode are similiar to my admittedly limited experience with PS. Really enjoy the wine, but feel its not very complex.
QOTD: Recently opened an 06' CDP that I was looking forward to…felt very one note.

  • QOTD 1: I usually love Petite Sirah but don't like to assume all bottles of any varietal is going to be wonderful.

QOTD 2: I went to see Anthony Bourdain speak recently. I wouldn't say I was truly disappointed, but it wasn't as exciting as I'd hoped. On the other hand, as someone who owns all his books (including fiction), seen every episode of TV and web video he's produced, and has read his blog since the start, I can't really fault Bourdain. The man can only have so much material.

I love petite sirah. Every once in a while I'll get one that blows me away. One of my favorites in the past has been The Heretic from 4 Vines; however, I wasn't to impressed with their last vintage.

  • tflangan

It's been a while since I've made it to the top ten. Gary needs to work harder. (just kidding-he works his butt off and everyone knows it).

    Now on to the show.

Not a huge fan of Petite Sirah….I had a Kosta Browne recently that I thought I was going to be amazed at….and wasn't. Good Show GV! Glad to have you back.

  • GV, Thanks for todays episode!
Still love the guest and blinders.

    QOTD:
Love Petite Syrah so I was glad, and hopeful, about tonights tasting.
Elyse has been one of my Zin 8 Petite Sirah producer.

    QOTD:
I was very disappointed on my 2nd bottle opening of the 2007 Caymus.
The first bottle I had was different, big and complex and clearly needed time.
But then over the holidays I opened a seconf bottle and it was way to sweet and tasted fake. I almost thought that it was a relabled $10 wine.

  • Well Gary, I am a HUGE fan of Petite Sirah and it really kills me to see these 3 efforts take the big “fail Whale” but hay…it is what it is. I am a really big fan of the Bogle Petite Sirah, it brings a lot to the table for the money.

    QOTD: Patriots

  • Couves

Gary, I sometimes get that orange zest note from another big wine grape ? Touriga Nacional!

  • Thanks Mott…your the best, I dont care what Gary says about you πŸ˜‰

  • eliotfagley

Good show, mostly because you adjusted your scores to more accurately reflect your reviews.

QOTD 1: Petite Sirah has never been a real favorite of mine. I find them a little jammy and flabby. For some reason I think of peaches as a way to describe them. Like an overripe peach, not much acid left, gooshy, squooshy, but delicious. It's a cocktail wine.

QOTD 2: I try to keep my expectations low. That way I'm pleasantly surprised by every little thing that happens. That said, I recently ate a veal brain tortilla that I was expecting to be some life changing event, but the veal brain just tasted like mushrooms.

  • Nothing to be sorry about with this episode. I liked it.

QOTD #1: I've had a few Petite Sirahs that have been amazing, but more often than not, they are a little boring. Not to mention they destroy your palate if you're trying to taste anything after it.

QOTD #2: A girl. We met one night and she was RAD. Went out a couple days later only to find out that everything she told me on the first night we met was just that… everything. She had nothing interesting left to say. Needless to say that ended quickly.

  • RANDINTHECITY

    GARY!!!
    Mwwaaa

Chocolate covered grapes? I think youre onto something!! :o)

QOTD: Petite Sirah ..is just not normally a go-to wine for me…However, I did happily drink my way through several cases of Turley.. (still have some left…maybe I'll go open a bottle!!!!)

  • johnfarrin

QOTD 1: Don't have enough experience to comment and with the price varience from syrah & Shiraz not likely to.
QOTD 2: A cheap Brunello ($20-had been $40) that wasn't as good as a lot of Chiaties or straight Sangioveses that I have had.

  • NY Pete

    cindy is a ho

  • Shootmenow

QOTD: Love a great PS… very under rated grape.
QOTD2: Aged Rhone. Had a CdR 2007 the night before and it was singing. The following night had an aged 99 Crozes Hermitage, which I had a couple of years ago and it was really solid, and now it was fading badly πŸ™

First episode where I have had all 3 wines before (different vintages)… nice.

The Jacob Franklin PS is the big boy from Elyse with the Elyse Petite Sirah Rutherford being a more everyday wine.. imho

Gary, Bob Foley is not involved with Corte Riva. The winemaker (Romel Rivera) is the assistant winemaker at Pride Mountain. Bob Foley connection is via Pride πŸ˜‰
Side note: Pride made a couple of PS vintages but Jim Pride decided to not pursue it anymore. Guess both winemakers still wanted to make some on their own.

QOTD #1: I've never really found a Petite Syrah that I've liked…I'm game to keep trying them…but I don't buy them.

QOTD #2: I've been disappointed with the movie trailers that have been coming out lately…I'm ready for something that is catchy, exciting, and interesting. Maybe I want longer trailers…I don't know. I just haven't been impressed with the quality of movie trailers since the first trailer of the movie '300' done to a NIN song.

Big props to Mott for making his profile pic Bender!

Petite Sirah has never had much draw for me. They tend to be pricey and tannic. The only one I'm familiar with is Madrigal. Which is as good, but I can hardly judge the grape as a whole.

BTW the first ever WLTV I ever watched was you reviewing petite sirah. I remember you reviewed Concannon. Episode 70 something, I think. You liked it and coincidentally I had at the time not liked it. For no good reason I didn't watch another WLTV episode til a few hundred episodes later. I'm glad I came back. The show is legit.

Last time I went into something expecting it to be good and got let down? Green Bay should not have lost to Arizona. Dom Capers is a bum. “The Road,” movie was weak as well.

  • Never had petite sirah before.

Q2. I went to a wine tasting party this weekend, where people bring a bottle of wine and it gets shared among the group. The people at the party who were more well versed in the world of wine disappointed me with what they brought. it was nothing to get excited about. Fortunately, some of the wine newbies got lucky and we ended up with a couple good ones. As a side note, that tasting was the first time I tried white wine at room temperature and I think I will try that more often.

  • gdeciantis

QOTD #1 – Never tried it. Sooo many wines, so little liver.

QOTD #2 – I try to tamper all expectations appropriately. Nothing matches, high or low.
