QOTD1: Not the biggest fan, but I'll drink it.

  • benkearney

I have nothing really to add.

  • Good episode, I don't think you were hard on the wines, although I've never tried any of them we've seen you hit others harder.

QOTD1: I love a good Petite Syrah with Chicken Marsala, Oh my…. try it.
QOTD2: I am disappointed with the new tax implementations in my country, very bad policy.

  • pizzavinojoe

I consider myself a fan of Petite Sirah. That being said, I can say with confidence that one will never crack my top 10; maybe not even top 20. I did a sabbatical at a winery in Sonoma called Enkidu that made very good Petite Sirah. I stained many shirts (and teeth)
    punching down the t-bins manually.

Dissappointment: Shafer Winery. Their staff treated myself and two others including a prominent (unbenounce to them) retailer very poorly; and save the Hillside Select, the wines didn't live up to the hype for me at all.

  • wesleymcallister

QOTD#1 I think I have had maybe 2 PS and I can't say I remember them to well. I have been trying crazy things because of WLTV and I have skiped over this one but I will have to search a few out.

QOTD#2 I don't know of anything that has really let me down lately. I guess I have a pretty amazing life.

  • Good to see you genuine, as always.

#1 Have always liked this varietal though I have never been over the top about it.

#2 I really love deer hunting and i recently had a chance to hunt, what I thought was some great land. Turned out that I ended up sitting for a long time and not getting anything. The chance to just sit silent though was nice.

    where's KAHUNA?

  • pbarr

Great show Gary…It is amazing how the wines can really change your mood.

I love the idea of being able to taste along with you on Friday. I'm going to give it a try.

I drink alot of wine but have never had a petite sirah.

  • troutmonster

Gotta love Turley! There's a time and a place for them 🙂 Really huge wines

  • jimkay

Off topic – how about tasting the two Charbonos you guys have in stock. Really enjoyed the one from Onthedge you turned us onto a year or two back-

  • I agree – Charbono needs some love. One of the producers in this show, Elyse, makes a great Charbono 🙂

  • Agreed on the Pats answer Derek! They'll be back on top of the AFC next season

  • NY Pete

why don't you drink the damn wine … that is all.

  • JasonGonzales

First off. Thanks Gary for reading my thesis on GaryVaynerchuk dot com, and replying! That made my week.

QOTD: I've never had a Petite Sirah :/

    QOTD: Biggest disappointment.
I've been hitting the gym pretty hard lately, and I just weighed myself yesterday and I weighed more than I've ever weighed in my life.

Other than that, I try not be disappointed with things in general. I had to think really hard about the gym thing…

  • NY Pete

    here's another spitty spit …

  • JasonGonzales

I'm glad you brought that up. I'll keep an eye out for that.

  • NY Pete

    55 bones … that's enough for 3 bottles of el jefe's PS

  • mikek

Hey to all, The 05 Peachy Canyon PS, overdelivered for the price point,(17 bones). I opened a bottle about 6 months ago and one last week. Wine is even better then I remembered. Good juice, paired well with rib-eye, IMHO.

    QOTD:
Expectation that the 05 San Felice El Grigio chianti would be “dry” (label=long, fresh finish). NOT:slip'nslide, waterpark, WET! I wouldn't have known it was Chianti, if I hadn't bought it myself! Disappointed.

Having dinner at the Saddle River Inn in 2 weeks. They always have wonderful game dishes. What should I bring to pair with venison, buffalo, duck or pheasant? I'm leaning toward a priorat or pinotage…thanks in advance. Hope everyone is well…

  • RANDINTHECITY

Troutmonster…the time is now..the place is here! LOL 😉 I love it too..

  • haha drink 'em if you got 'em!

  • trekkiejj

Long-time lurker coming out of the woodwork to say, “Cheer up!” It was a great show (as usual), and I completely understand your weirdness/disappointment with the wines. They weren't bad–they just didn't live up to your expectations.

QOTD 1: I've had exactly one PS in my life, but it left enough of an impression that I now think fondly of the varietal. It was fairly inexpensive, and I thought it had good QPR. I don't remember what it was, unfortunately.

QOTD 2: Don't know how many gamer vayniacs are out there, but I'm experiencing exactly this sort of disappointment right now with Mass Effect 2. ME1 blew me away, and ME2 is getting insanely high scores in the press (it currently has a score of 96 on metacritic). I bought it this weekend with incredibly high expectations. The game is good, and polished, and fun, but it's a little one-dimensional. I like it, but on some level I'm disappointed, which has caused me to feel a little “meh” about it. Your experience with the wines today seemed to pretty much match my feelings toward the game.

  • Looks like you've got a little something extra in your step! Good vibes, bro. Keep Crushing It. See you soon.

  • Chilemily

    Little lurker coming out…..

Petit Sirah thoughts: I've only had one once and it was chilean. I didn't know much about the varietal, but really liked the particular bottle I had. I think it is a less known grape that I would like to have more of.

Disappointment: I normally LOVE Riojas from Spain, but I had a recent one that failed to impress. I didn't really have anything going on in it and seemed pretty boring.

PS- I would love if you included more chilean wine on the show (I currently live there even though I'm from the US), especially a Friday taste along!

  • JasonGonzales

    Ha ha…

  • You're definitely right about the Peachy Canyon – great guys behind that label too!

  • carlo10

QOTD1: i have only had one but it was, as you said, a good one to drink because it tasted nice. nothing that was fun to drink though

QOTD2: I just recently went out to go skiing in utah and the state with “the greatest snow on earth” hadnt gotten snow in 5 weeks and only had 1.5 feet for a base. and i was supposed to get shown around a company i would like to work for and then they told me it was too busy for that…frustrating trip.

are there petite sirah's in the $10-$15 range?

how old do you have to be to be considered an old school vayniac?

  • 1. So far as a young wine drinker, I have found pretty decent success with PS.
    2. I'm preparing for an audition, and as I was recording, some dude came up to the door SNOOPING in (messing up my brain) and I missed the last note. It took another 15 minutes until I got another run that good!

  • carlo10

agree…i was thinking, if you wanted to have an intern to mentor and have drink the rest of your wine, i would be the ideal candidate. just sayin ; )

  • JasonGonzales

    I'm down with QOTD#2

  • robbiec

I have had a few petite sirahs in the past which have really been great, but they are sort of “few and far between.” It's been a few years since I've had anything great in the way of a PS.
QOTD..I had an evaluation at work recently, and went in w/ high expectations because I've been working harder; putting more preparation/energy into what I do (teaching). They said that I've gotten worse…WTF?

  • castello

    What country is it?

  • Just Jack

Exactly vpass, and the crazy thing is that you would expect service to improve in hard times. People should value their jobs more and it should be easier for employers to replace non performers. In fact it seems to be the opposite. the worse things get, the less the companies spend on training and motivation. I think it’s a symptom of managing for the quarter as opposed to managing for the long run health of the company.

  • robbiec

In the 10-15 bones price range, try the Bogle PS. It's not going to be profound, but I had it a few years ago and it was an interesting, drinkable wine…definitely worth a try.

  • drt999

Love the PS! (although I haven't tasted at this level — and after these reviews, I think I'll stick to the under $20 PS)

And I was expecting a good show from a 1995 Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape,but is was a very tired 82 pts

  • JasonGonzales

You just reminded me of an all time disappointment… Gears of War 2! So I feel you on the follow up of Mass Effect.

  • Nice episode. Only tried petite syrah before in a blend, so havent come up with any major conclusions yet.

  • CBone

    Hey Gary,
Interesting show. I liked the internal struggle.

QOTD 1: I think most of the PS I've had have been blended into other wines to act as a push up bra of sorts. The only PS I've had where it was the main attraction was a Bogle, and I thought it was pretty good! I liked the aggressiveness of it. It made me think of a girl in college I once knew! Yikes!

QOTD 2: I think I have to say a Crozes Hermitage I bought at my local wine store (Schneiders Liquors, in DC, a pretty good place on the whole) disappointed me. I think the salesman recommended it because it was on sale and they wanted to move some inventory. I'm actually finishing it off right now, and though better the second day, I guess I was hoping it would be the Hermitage I can't afford! Still, it isn't bad really, it isn't the Star Wars prequel level of disappointing. I just hoped I'd find a miraculous window into 100 point wines that it seems to me does not exist! Later everyone!

I Have some Langhe in my closet now. I want to try it too.

  • last p . sirah i had was the wooden nickel, i wish you tasted that, cause we talked about it briefly and we both really liked it, i know that you have tasted it before on wltv maybe that is why you didnt do it again.. yo gv, please dont flip us the bird like r2. talk to you later. Bill

  • robbiec

Chilean wines rock! I'm a big fan. I live in China where every wine is sold for 100-200% more than it goes for in the USA. For me, Chilean wines are occationally good enough values for me to spend $15-20 on a wine which would be $8 in the USA.

Anyone, please leave recommandations for wines which you would pay 100% more for. What is worth it at twice the price? Please help a brother out!

  • yacochuya

QOTD #1 Actually drinking a petite Sirah now, one of my recent fav daily wines (along with Alta Vista Atemporal from WL) …Huntington Petite Syrah 2005. I have not tasted too many Petite syrahs, but I like this one for less than $15.

QOTD #2 Recent disappointment was Saturday night, though I blame myself not the wine. Opened up my last 2 bottles of 2001 Bartolo Mascarello Barbera's. Yes, Barberas, not barolos. These were 2 of the 800 bottles of wine I was lucky enough to bring back from Italy after I served in the military there from 2002-2005. (My wine collection was considered “household goods”) Visited the Godfather of Barolo before he died and his bottles had a sentimental value to me, but still no reason to hold a barbera this long. So the disappointment was in me, not the wine, and luckily his barolos will last a lot longer. Live and Learn.

  • CBone

I think Bogle makes one for about $12. It was pretty tasty stuff, considering.

Amen! I think this country has the worst most short sighted management in our history. There are a few shining exceptions of companies who get it like Apple or Falcon Northwest. People also need to take more pride in their work.

  • Hey Gary, Chris Colombo was jewish, he liked to drink wine to. You are correct about the inkyness. in show #284 you tasted the Elyse 2005 which did you like better? I going to get a bottle and I will make my Chef Robert's Mediterranean Chicken of Love.
GREAT SHOW AGAIN thanks for the thunder!!
    happydiabetic com

If you've ever traveled to Greece, you know all about the healthy eating habits of the locals. This dish is a rich and full-flavored sample of their cuisine, heavy with aromas from the Mediterranean.

The tender chicken, garlic, and tomatoes create a delicious combination that your friends and family will not soon forget, and it's just as good if you substitute shrimp for the chicken. This recipe is easy to prepare? and remember, it was made with love!

    Ingredients

2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
    1/4 cup white wine
1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, sliced
    2 cloves of garlic
    3 roma tomatoes, diced
    2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
    1 tablespoon rosemary
    1 tablespoon oregano
10 pitted kalamata or black pitted olives
    1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
    salt and pepper to taste

    Directions

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced chicken and sautè about 4 to 6 minutes, until golden. Remove chicken from skillet and set aside.

Sautè garlic in pan drippings for 30 seconds, then add tomatoes and sautè for 3 minutes. Lower heat, add white wine, and simmer for about 5 minutes. Add oregano, rosemary, and basil, and simmer for 2 to 3 more minutes.

Return chicken to skillet and cover. Cook over low heat until chicken is cooked through and no longer pink inside. Add olives and parsley to the skillet and cook for 1 minute. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and serve.

qotd1: Love the PS! its my fav varietal right now.
qotd2: biggest disappointing wine for me was a Molly Dooker. dont remember which kind, but i couldnt even drink a glass. dumped the bottle. what a waste of $25. i'll never buy a MD again.

  • M. Colon

    Gary,

Thank-you for you fair and unbaised commentary on the petite sirah show. I have not been disappointed yet by your review. Keep up the hell of a great job you are doing despite what “the others” may think. 🙂

  • castello

I like PS but it is a little one dimensional. We get futures from David Caffaro in Sonoma for 11 bones being a member and the barrel tastings are Awesome. Hard to beat his quality for any where near the price.
I'm almost always dissapointed with french wines specially when I spurlge for a big ass CNP.

  • JasonGonzales

    Wow. Charbono is rare.

  • cubs2806

qotd1: Like Petit, have had some good ones, actually went to Elyse last week and had a good time and mentioned the show.
qotd2: A job interview that i recently had, went in thinking good about it and left thinking good about it but did not get the job. First time that has ever happened to me.
Question for you, I was wondering if you are still doing the wine project in Napa? If anybody can tell or you Gary that would be great. I have been watching past episodes and finally came across what the number on the white board meant.

  • johnr

Ah, so is PS….I have always found PS to be “unelegant”, and with those pricepoints even more like to pazzz. QOTD….OBAMA!!!
