No motivation, no enthusiasm. I have experienced the same thing at Best Buy/Lowes/Home Depot/Walmart etc. But you go for the prices, well maybe not Best Buy. What really stinks is when you go to an expensive place, expecting quality, and you find out they have no idea what they are talking about.

  • See if you can find Villa Sam Juliette PS, should be around $15 and worth every penny.

  • GreggB

Big G, Hmmmm not sure I can say this was a good EP, but I'll take it.
I'm in a good mood. That's because it's good night to be a Chicago Bear fan. I think Mike Martz will be a good fit for Da Bears and counting Lovie we will now have 4 coaches that have been head football coaches in the NFL. Can't wait for next year.

QOTD: You reviewed a 2006 Bogle Petite Sirah a while back and told us that particular varietal was their indigenous grape and that's why it was pretty good for the price. I have been buying it ever since and it really is serviceable. There was another very good Petite Sirah I bought from you and that was 2003 Wooden Nickel.

  • mattgmann

qotd #1- meh. There's lots of other wine varieties out there that offer a similar experience to PS at a much lower price point in my mind.

qotd #2 -minervois; hadn't had one in a while, so bought a few last week, and none were very strong efforts.

On a positive note, picked up a 2003 Domaine de la Bastidonne Cotes du Ventoux in the same trip that was MIND BOGGLING good for $20, and a $15 Priorat called La Cartuja that was almost equally excellent. I know…priorat for 15 bucks….I was skeptical too. I went back yesterday and bought their remaining stock.

We do a wine class on Sundays and this week we were focusing on Loire wines. We taste everything blind and I was really expecting the 2005 Baumard Quart de Chaume to blow everyone away. It didn't

  • BelugaJones

Just wanted to say that you make an awesome show guys and keep up the good work. I'm turning 21 in 3 weeks and I will no doubt use this show to inform some of my first purchases 😀

  • KAHUNA

Have not watched the episode yet but GV and Petite Sirah do not go together

  • KAHUNA

I have heard lots of “juice” leads to small “grapes”

  • what other sweet wines were in the lineup? the Baumard QdC is one of the greatest wines in the world IMHO, but they need time, food, and people who really appreciate sweet wines. I served a stunning wine that was slightly off-dry at a tasting for the general public. The reaction was mostly “thats not good, its sweet.”

Because of white zin, people are afraid to like wines with RS. But thats okay, it keeps my Baumard affordable!

  • KAHUNA

all Petite Sirah's belong in a decanter

  • KAHUNA

pushup on Monday morning – Astonauts to the moon – hahahahah

  • You almost took your eye out in the opening few seconds… I like the danger!
I'm a big fan of PS wines… thanks for the show!

QOTD1: I've liked my most recent PS wines.
QOTD2: I followed your lead on Portugese wines and the first 2 bottles (mind you they were both under $10) were missed the mark by quite a bit.

    Any SXSW plans/news??????

  • winecrazy

    Still no emails……………

  • KAHUNA

wines have a factor on your show- so your saying your wine show may have something to do with wine- next thing you know you will start liking Merlot wines from Pennsylvania

  • KAHUNA

I have not enjoyed an Elyse Petite Sirah early in release for a few years now – They come together after a few years-have to agree with you on that- but having seen an episode or 2 of WineLibrary TV – I know we do not align on Petite Sirah-

    QOTD:
    I love Petite Sirah-
    QOTD Part 2-
You loved that Peachy Canyon Petite which I thought was way overboard for that wine-that was sad- and since it is still in stock at WL I figure more people were not crazy about it either

  • sashanyc

Love the honesty on the show as always.

QOTD 1: Was introduced to Petite Syrah by you a while back and I've only had positive things to say about the few I've tasted… recommended it to friends and they are now fans of the varietal.

QOTD 2: my meal @ a new local mexican joint Cascabel Taqueria..on the UES. Was really looking forward to it because of friends reviews and found it somewhat disappointing.. Good flavors but just not what I was looking for.. I will be going back for seconds and hopefully the experience will be a better one..

Petite Sirah will be back. Sorry to get all personal, but recently, after a long trip overseas, I settled in for a wait at Dulles Airport and ordered a Petite Sirah — just to get me through. And it was magnificent! Large, bold, jammy, tannic — with a big finish. And it changed my whole mood from numbed boredom to satisfied relaxation. I sympathize with your dashed expectations tonight, but when P.S. comes through, it really comes through. Also, I loved the show because of your emotional honesty.

  • winecrazy

I love petite's….. every year now I have been getting more and more of the Turley because it is so limited to the mailing list. Last year I was lucky and called Turley and I asked if I can get a case…….and my allocation is like 2 bottles…anyway the ladys like….let me see. She comes back and say OK…..you got it. And this was around Christmas so I was like a little kid in a candy store. I love trying new ones. I hace had Girard since 2004 and it's always good for the money and I'll always pick up 6 or so when I see them.

What's your favorite G man…??? I need to try some good new ones!!!

And can you serioiusly get someone to fix my email problem….as you can see I'm here at the 200's when I should be in the top 10.

    Not good…… 🙁

  • stancolts_2010

Petite Sirah can be absolutely fantastic when it is dialed in. I am sorry you experienced the wines that you did. I love the Rosenblum Petite Sirah. It brings to the table what you expect for a lot less money. I am drinking a 2006 Leonetti Cellars merlot that I fully expected to be phenomenal. I am truly disappointed. In the past I have felt like I was indulging in a fantasy wine. Tonight I feel like I am in a nightmare. For eighty bucks you expect more and it did not deliver. Oh well, that is wine. Love your show.

  • KAHUNA

    Give Outpost a whirl, Switchback Ridge, Neal Family, Rosenblum(Heritage Clones 05, 06 & 07),

  • amgryger

QOTD 1: It's okay. I've enjoyed certain Petite Sirah in the past, but it's not something I've bought for myself in a really long time.

QOTD 2: I recently finished a drawing that I've been working on for a long time and it didn't really come out as well as I had hoped.

  • QOTD1: Don't mind it at all.
QOTD2: Believe it or not I was somewhat dissappointed with the hype of Avatar. The visual and 3D effects lived up to the hype but the whole plot and acting fell way short for me. Hey James Cameron!……Keanu Reeves and Kevin Costner called…..they want the plots from “Matrix” and “Dances With Wolves” back!

    Gary,
I have a question about holding times for wine. For example, if the critics say a wine will be at its peak in 3-5 years, is that 3-5 years from the vintage year or from the time its bottled and available on the market? i.e.2005 juice may not be in a bottle til 2007. Does the clock start in 05 or 07?
    Thanks!

  • 3-5 from now

  • sucks glen will look more into it

  • sold 500+ cases 😉

  • its tough

  • KAHUNA

Lol – no shit everyone on cellartracker has it from you!!!

  • winecrazy

    Thanks Homey…!!!

  • winecrazy

Thanks, I will. I was just out there and went to Neal and Outpost but I didn't see any petite… I might have done a sample out of one of the giant barrels at Neal but I didn't see any in bottles. And that wasn't ready to drink but it was just to se what the stuff taste like in the almost ready but not quite stage.

I love Rosenblum zins so I will try that and switchback. Gotta look for some outpost and call neal. Thanks

  • KAHUNA

If you can find a McManis 2007(must be 07) Petite Sirah-should be around $8-$9 a bottle try it- I think it is one of the finest bottles under $10 I have had

  • smiledoc

sharing the disappointment, Elyse can really be in your face like Joe Frazier

  • Cool_Dave

Gary, a few months ago I went to a Robert Foley tasting and I had the Petite Sirah, Merlot, Charbono, Claret, Pino Blanc and Griffon Red and they all tasted VERY similar. I don't know if that is make -up (oak) or what. I did like and buy the Charbono and Griffon but something just did not seem right with these wines. The Petit Sirah tasted a lot like the Merlot. That can't be right.
Try them yourself and see. It was wierd.

  • KAHUNA

This is sad to hear- I have been a fan of Foley Petites and usually lay them down for a while- May have to visit a few to see what is happening-Thanks for the heads up-

Also I have noticed the last 3 vintages many producers going over the top on the Petites which has me very concerned about the 07 vintage- I feel they will be WAY to over the top – I mean when $7 – $10 Petites are coming in with well rounded fruit in 07 – the big boys may take it to far-

  • Have a friend who planted right next door to Switchback. Cannot wait for this fruit in a couple of years!

  • KAHUNA

    Am I on the list!

  • Cool_Dave

Yea I know what you mean.

  • Hated to see those wines not destroy. One of my first true wine 'experiences' that blew me away was a split of a 94 or 95 Petite from Fess Parker I think. It didn't just punch me in the face, it pulled a Rowdy Roddy Piper flying lariat off the top ropes and leveled me. That's when I knew wine was something special.

You know you are living large when you survive a bold Petite Sirah in Piper's Pit

  • audiofan

Do you always drink your wines soooo young? I wouldn't have touched that Merlot for 6-8 years unless I had a case or two and just wanted to see what they were like in their infancy. Perhaps still closed from bottling/shipping? The producer certainly knows his stuff… I'm still waiting on my '02s.

  • Anonymous

Back when I smoked, I never liked any table wine with or after any cigars, and for me at least, port of any kind didn’t work either. For me, Verdelho Madeira worked; I think Sercial Madeiras might as well, but never actually tried it

  • Thanks GAry. I've always wondered that myself. Thanks for asking the question I never have Gayle!

    Martin

  • Anonymous

I have both the 2005 & 2006. Hope they’re at least as nice as his 2006 Grenache, which I just had a few days ago; that was a very solid, enjoyable wine

  • mtwinery

As a P.S. grover and producer @ 2600 feet I think you should try P.S. from higher elevations. The P.S. from the valley floor in CA often is missing complexity.

  • Merlot from PA??? You must be crazy…

  • NIB

Rut Ro…I think somebody needs a scooby snack.
I think it might be a little dangerous to generalize how you feel about California Petite Sirah based on three tastings. Saying that your not sure what California has to offer is pretty out there considering you only tasted those three wines, regardless of how they were scored.

QOTD: I have had some great Petite Sirah's. I really love big bold single varietals like Cab franc, petite Verdot and Petite Sirah, But like all wines out there, not every one of them is going to be spectacular.

QOTD:Probably turning 21,it was all hipped up and exciting. Then the night comes everybody wants to buy you all his crap that they know will just kill you, and you wake up the next day hung as hell and realize it really was all just a blurr you can't remember anyway.

  • Dominic C.

@GaryV, how about a wine from your personal collection?

  • audiofan

    Gary,
Am I correct that you score the wine as is showing right now? Or are you factoring how you expect it to taste at maturity? I was surprised at your comment that you didn't believe the Petite Syrah wines “would evolve.” Perhaps they won't, but I've found that one of the characteristics of wine when consumed too young is that they often come off as somewhat “one-dimensional”…many young Bordeaux can come off in this way…as I'm sure you've noticed. Give (for instance) Bordeaux wines 10-12 years in the cellar, and the bottle of “fruit & tannin” it displays in its youth usually evolves into a wonderfully complex and multi-faceted wine, as one would expect from great Bordeaux. A bottle of 2006 Chateau Lafite Rothschild consumed today would be “one-dimensional” compared with a bottle opened in 2016-2020, when its nearing maturity. Bordeaux is certainly unique, but all “big” tannic, fruity wines, regardless of origin, will evolve, will they not? At least the tannin and fruit will fade and change over time, if not always for the better.
Petite Syrah, at least the more expensive, “serious” ones (Turley) can take many years to reach their ultimate potential. The less structured, concentrated styles (Bogle) are pretty decent right out of the bottle, and tend to improve very little with cellar time. Maybe (and I'm just shootin' off my mouth here) you could inform your viewers how long (in your opinion) before the wine being tasted will reach its optimum drinking window? As always, these are just my personal musings, to be taken (or disgarded) with a grain of salt. And now, under the cover of darkness, I shall slip away…

  • QOTD1: When the email came in about this show being up for viewing, there was a bit of excitement in our household. Petite Sirah has been one of those wines that we've had a bit of success with, but it is kind of hit and miss. We just got home from a tasting where we had a Marietta Cellars Petite Sirah which was kind of meh. We threw 87 points at it, and moved on.

QOTD2:The thing that has been most disappointing lately is probably Gary's affinity for Lady Gaga. Although we can appreciate her being over the top, the outfit she wore to the Grammy's where you could see the inside of her 'Gaga' was a bit more than we bargained for. Not great.

  • DPnCali

    LOL…nice!

  • castello

I disagree. It is ready to drink when they release it. It may melow with a few years but maybe not.
