Sauvignon Blanc is the only wine varietal that I’m bored with so I couldn’t get too pumped about this episode (even though Joe Namath makes an appearance)

Did you really just pair a wine with SKATE?!?! I don't think I've ever had skate before… is it good?

  • cubs2806

skate is great, it is a lower grade fish that doesn't get a lot of credit

  • carlo10

question for the vaynernation…are stinky cheeses something you just have to get used to (kind of like trying beer for the first time)? we opened up something (no idea what it was) and it stunk up my whole basement…

  • jenna35

awesome shirt Gary! I took a trip to wine library and was very pleased with the large variety that was offered in gourmet library… I enjoyed the beemster classic gouda

  • QOTD: I'm old school Parmesan and Chianti. There are so many other pairings that I love, but give me a big block of Parmesan and a good Sangiovese and I'm happy happy.

  • ONUMello

Honestly this is the first time I've heard about dipping them in ketchup! I don't think ketchup and cheese would go together very well, except on a hamburger. My favorite way to have fried cheese curds is fresh out of the frier, nice & gooey. Of course fresh cheese curds just a few hours old that squeak when you bite them are amazing, too. I have lots of extended family in Wisconsin and every time I'm there I'll buy a couple pounds straight from a cheese factory.

FS from a Jets win … how the fuck did you manage that?

  • Gary:
Sorry you were disappointed by the Coopers Creek wine. They are also known for a take-no-prisoners approach to wine-naming:
    MOTHER CLUCKERS CHARDONNAY
Cat's Pee on a Gooseberry Bush Sauvignon Blanc
I don't know if these labellings would pass muster with the Feds. Maybe that's why they're not sold in the USA.
    QOTD: Supreme avec Champagne
PS: Congrats to our Beard Award nominee!
    Prosit,
    Carlo

    Good show, thanks!

There's no end to good cheeses, so here's local (to us) ones we enjoy:

Oakvale Farmstead Gouda; it's just awesome: http://www.oakvalecheese.com/
    and
Lake Erie Creamery chevre; divine: http://www.lakeeriecreamery.com/products.html

We've had them each with different whites; I don't have a specific pairing that is best.

  • canuckguest

BTW, the c in blanc is silent!

  • ONUMello

Watch GV very closely on Twitter… both he and @gourmetlibrary had several tweets about it before/after the game 12/27

  • cubs2806

the person in speak of is from wisconsin, i am originally from the midwest and had never heard of it either, but love the squeak as well, had never heard of them fried though. that was a first for me. i tried the ketchup thing, not bad, but different

  • ONUMello

And not to get you too pissed or jealous, but I also got a code for free WL shipping for all of 2010 by watching a little Ustream & buying Crushit. WL/GL is getting WAAAYYY too much of my $$$ this year!!

    Sav Blanc??? Boring!

    QOTD: cheese wine paring…
MT TAM, Cowgirl Creamery with Louis Jadot 2005 Burgundy

  • Jason

QOTD: blue cheese, with a little butter on the bread with Chard

  • cinderellaboy

I had a soft blue cheese paired with Dolce. I am not a dessert wine fan, but this was truly awesome. I highly recommend it. Not sure which blue cheese from Gourmet Library would work best.

  • StevenL

QOTD- Velveeta and a Madiran- smells like wine.
Try some Chile SauvBlancs like Concha or Santa Rita- great values and super fav.

  • BFR1028

I feel that white go much better with cheese as well

  • QOTD-
Good creamy Camembert, has to be at room temp so it's nice and soft….. http://gourmetlibrary.com/products/47164-Isigny

Topped with some sour cherry preserves- http://gourmetlibrary.com/products/39959-Americ… (never had this brand)

Paired with Nevada City Winery 2007 Barbera- http://www.ncwinery.com/scripts/winepg.cfm/_/30… it's only available at the winery though… worth a shot for sure if you ever get a chance to try it. All of their wines are tasty!

  • Love the shows with pairings especially cheese!

QOTD: My all time favorite would have to be a creamy brie on a little bit of salami on a rye cracker with a Malbec or just about any South American red for that matter. I try other pairings all the time but that is always my go to pair.

  • BFR1028

Can one wine be paired with another??

    Keith

  • “Not offensive” — I love that as a wine descriptor!
Cannot do the SB's, at least not until I find one I can really like. But every one I try just makes me think of LimeAid! It's either my untrained palate, or, I haven't had a stellar one yet. Will keep trying though!

  • Sweetweetak

Will we get free shipping on cheese to Alaska ??? hmmm???

  • zrm

Good Episode! I love the food pairings.

QOD: I always like a nice aged Cheddar (http://gourmetlibrary.com/products/36707-Twin-O…) with a Malbec. Had it with the one packed in the Christmas 3 Pack this year.

  • We had this mind-blowing meal of Fois Gras Four Ways paired with a Medoc and followed by Brebis with cherry preserves. Granted it was in Paris so other factors contributed to the ecstasy of the meal, but that was pretty good.

  • This is why ratings are so overrated – IMO. People rely heavily on them when purchasing their wine thinking the 91 point wine will knock their socks off when in fact it may really disappoint. The only ratings that I somewhat follow are Cellar Tracker as it is more of an average of all of people that have had that wine not just one reviewer.

QOTD – St. Agur Blue Cheese with a Sav Blanc. I can't link the cheese as GL doesn't carry this Blue…..wink wink, nudge, nudge

  • I often find that smell does not equal taste with those little stinkers. They can really be sweet-creamy-rich. Give it another chance. But if you don't like it, hey – that's cool. Plenty of great stuff that doesn't smell funky.

  • Beeper

    nice shirt 😉

    QOTD: stilton (http://gourmetlibrary.com/products/42748-Neal-s…) and port

  • JasonGonzales

Finally. The intro today had some spiciness on it! If your intro isn't a good intro it's difficult for me to rate the show above 90 points… (to put it into perspective) But great intro today.

QOTD: Pepper Jack is my favorite cheese. I'm not sure which wine it would go well with.

  • scottEJ

Thanks, G. Watching you crack those SB makes me think that Spring is indeed not too far away. Then I step outside and that thought fades to black instantly. Also, thanks for gormet code. I'll certainly check it out.

QOTD: Any bleu and port. Even a bad bleu and a bad port make my knees weak.

  • Anonymous

I have had the Daguenau Pur Sang. It was amazing. We are getting our allocation of the 07’s in my restaurant in a couple of weeks. Can’t wait to sell(and hopefully taste) them. I believe that you are correct. 07 was the last vintage that he produced before the crash. Very sad, he was extremely talented.

  • Well you've got to go with the classic Stilton and Port!

But also, I love some manchego (throw some quince on top for good measure) with a red like Napa Cab or Rioja. Boom!

  • guymandude

Good tight show. SB are a little done though I hear ya.

    qotd; All and all

  • adambunnell

As a college student I love craft singles paired with charles shaw chardonnay. Great show as always Gary, you make it look so easy.

  • scotty b

Not too much thunder tonight GV. I almost would've rather seen a 60 point wine that you slammed rather than a bunch of so-so efforts. Still appreciate your work though!

QOTD: Don't know anything about cheese pairings unfortunately.

  • johnfasc

    Thanks for the gourmet code!

  • steve41602

QOTD: A combo of Stilton and sharp English Cheddar with 10 year Warre's Optima Port! Maybe a couple of apricots as well.

Loved the show and you are so right, Gary. Wine and Food. Wine and Food.

  • ONUMello

OK, I just opened the bottle of Coopers Creek I got from WL last week; I'm gonna split the difference & go 86 points (GV's original score but lower than WS or Cellartracker's avg). I agree with the mowed lawn nose then a nice crisp lime/gooseberry palate, yes a bit short on the midpalate/finish, but still folks for $8 a great QPR.

  • ONUMello

    LET'S GO CKCs!!!

  • granciclista

Mount “Nell-son”[sounds like]…..Just moved back from New Zealand – great Sauvignon Blanc all over that country….

  • A dumb Rhein king

    Solid ep.

QOTD: I've never really paired cheese with wine. Maybe that will be a summer project.

  • cellarrat5

I hope so, I don't know if I have ever tried! I have had whites then reds with different courses, but I don't think I have ever had two wines together with an intention to pair them. Thanks for the idea!

  • WineWoman

QOTD: Australian Cheddar with Australian Cab Barnadown Run or Leuwins artist series
    Parmagiano Reggiano with Neyers Zin
Gruyere with an Oregon Pinot Gris
Roaring Forties with Justin Obtuse Port Aged Gouda with Amarone
Mt. Tam Cowgirl Creamery with Mushroom Soup and Pouilly-Fusse

  • cellarrat5

Good show, too bad the Sauv Blanch didn't bring a little more thunder. I am an avid fan of the Varietal myself, but NZ does not seem to be as good as all the hype. You should rate all the food you eat with the wine, I bet you would have given that one 92 maybe 92+.

QOTD: Point Reyes blue cheese with a viognier Rousanne blend. WARNING: if you do not like bold flavors and extremely intense pairings do not try this! It would almost be overkill if it were not so damned delicious.

  • Greetings from lurkerdom, as promised on twitter.

    QOTD: Smoked Gouda and Vacqueyras

  • QOTD:White cheese with truffles paired with a great Oregon Pinot noir.
    Good show.
