Sauvignon Blanc is the only wine varietal that I’m bored with so I couldn’t get too pumped about this episode (even though Joe Namath makes an appearance)

hi gary! and all the rest of you..
my FAVORITE pairing is the delicious salty meets sweet and savoury mix of a shropshire blue cheese ( Colston Basset Shropshire Blue Neal's Yard Dairy, sold on gourmet library) http://gourmetlibrary.com/products/6195-Colston
matched with a pedro ximenez… with a couple of grapes, some thick apple syrup and walnut & vig bread.. for me thats what i will be eating every day in heaven!!

  • I like Cabernet Sauvignon and Manchego.

  • JiminAtlanta

Sorry the wines were not better. I enjoy cheese, but have a hard time remembering them. I know I like parmesan and camembert (and goat cheeses). There are lots of good American cheeses that I have tried at my favorite wine restaurant. I will have to try some of your cheese with the free shipping. Thanks

  • Too bad “The beard” didn't make an appearance. Not too hot on the episode, I dont' like cat urine so SB isn't high on my list.

QOTD: Your out of one of my fave's Grayson by Meadow creek from back in my neck of the woods http://meadowcreekdairy.com/JML/content/view/16…, really nice, but don't really pair cheeses with wine. Enjoy each, but never really enhanced one another.

  • FullOnNelson

Champagne and a triple creme brie, or grana padano

  • ahillsey

Porque 2008 New Zealand SBs and not the new, fresh 2009s? Also gotta go bubs and triple cream.

  • Lisa S

    Good show, GV!

Not a big fan of Sauvignon Blanc in generalm although nice on a warm summer day. The only New Zealand SB that I like is Kim Crawford. The others are too green for my palate. I do like a handful of Calif SB- especially when blended with semillon and aged a bit in oak, such as Duckhorn or Matanzas Creek SB. Recently tried Illuminations from Napa Valley – was a huge hit at a local wine tasting, but $35 a bottle.

QOTD: Supreme Brie, Cave-aged Gruyere, or Dutch Gouda with a nice Chardonnay, or Point Reyes Blue Cheese from Northern Calif with a Cab.

Comte with a Crémant de Bourgogne or de Jura. Pair it with some beet/balsamic purée and cumin seeds and it's through the roof. A vin jaune is stellar, too. Hey, why not do a vin jaune show sometime soon???

  • SourGrapesFC

qotd: stilton and anything. really good with a spicy grenache or Southern Rhone blend.

  • NY Pete

    NZ SB … meh

  • NY Pete

    mt. neilson … lol

  • As you tasted the wines all I could think of was “cheese”. Nice. Sauvignon Blancs from NZ aren't really my go to wine but if they're available I'll buy a bottle, they're good meal starters but that's about it for me.

QOTD: Manchego is my favorite cheese.http://gourmetlibrary.com/products/45630-Aurora-6-Month-Manchego .

Manchego and Chateau de la Chaize, OMG. Try it.

  • NY Pete

    frack SS Chris … 😛

  • BelugaJones

Great episode, I really like the pacing.

  • NY Pete

at least you got the lobster point right …. razzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Pat__B

Favorite cheese is the cheddar that will be thrown by CC Sabathia this year. I think it would work well with a nice bubbly or prosecco as the Yankees bring home #28. Spring training….game on.

  • notTheFalseD

Great show! Have yet to experience a really great Sauvignon Blanc, so this was a good reminder to try and do something about that.

QOTD: I tend to pair wine and cheese somewhat haphazardly, so I don't know whether any of my pairings would actually make sense to anyone else… One combo that seemed to work for me was Old Amsterdam(?) gouda (about 8-10 month aged) and a Riesling Spatlese. But this has to happen in either May or June.

  • batstongue

    Great show.
The Mt Nelson is owned by the Antinori family from Italy and they aim to give a more european feel the the NZ sauvignon blanc character, hence the sancerre comparisons.
Apparantly 2009 is a better vintage for NZ sauvignon blanc than 2008. Maybe next year there will be a few 90 pointers.
Can't get over the prices, they are cheaper than here in New Zealand!

  • Paul Blank

Thank you for informative show Gary and Mott.Need to go and buy a Sauvignon Blanc to try and some cheese also.Have a great weekend.

  • audiofan

91 points from WS, eh? Whatta ya wanna bet they have a full-page ad from 'Coopers Creek' in an upcoming issue? I haven't trusted ANY scores from them since '85 vintage when they pushed the 'Banfi' Brunellos (with a Banfi ad on every other page) with mid-ninties scores (the wines were mediocre).
You “cheddar & cab sauv” guys surprise me. For me, it coats the palate & 'blocks' the fruit; all I taste is acid and tannin. I'm solidly in the Manchego camp. It actually makes most reds taste more opulent, the only cheese I've found (so far) to do so.

    THIS IS IT!!

The big day is tomorrow!! February 20th of 2010, 8:00PM:

I am going to marry the Love of My Life: Maria Tatiana.

It?s gonna be the greatest day of all for us, and I wanted to share this with you Gary and the Vaynernation! The following day, we are leaving to a long dreamed honeymoon in Europe, so I?m gonna be a little absent on the comments? (I promise to catch up when I get back!) Oh, and for fellow wine lovers, the toast is going to be with a Veuve Clicquot Vintage 2002 Brut, at the reception we are going to have the very nice Brazilian sparkling, Casa Valduga Arte Brut, a must-try value!

    Hope everyone is doing wonderful!

I am very, very, very happy!! See you all soon!

    God bless us all!

    Mauricio Fernandes.
    Recife ? BRAZIL.

  • flavasauce

QOTD: Easy, Sauternes with creamy blue like Castillo!!!!!!!!! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

  • Beeper

Everybody's talking about the Manchego…I guess I'm going to have to try me some.

  • Dave

Not a big Wine and Cheese kind of guy, but I had a Kim Crawford Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc with Blue Cheese a little while back… Great pairing

  • CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • My “everyday, goto wine” is New Zealand sauvi blancs. Gotta try the Mount Nelson!

QOTD: Any “extra sharp” cheddar with a sauvi blanc 😉

  • jcrazy

    Royal Stilton and good Port.

  • ib71

So, so wines. So, so show. Too much hype and manipulation in order to promote gourmetlibrary – at least for my taste.

QOTD: I have recently discovered af great wine-cheese pairing: Italian Tallegio cheese and french Muscadet wine share a subtlety of flavour and a light saltiness.

  • Good luck and congratulation

  • Richie

    Good old fashion WLTV. Fantastic.

  • Anonymous

Thanks for your thoughts. I was teetering on the edge of spending the $$$
but your comments pushed me over the side. I’m happy, my wife, not so much!

  • YoungDave

Classic tight, 3-wine show. Great to see some difference of opinion with GV and Spectator!!

QOTD: High-acid, tangy goat cheese and Loire Valley wines (especially Sauvignon Blanc and especially Sancerre and Pouilly Fume) are a favorite pairing of mine. However, to mention something a little different, I also love an off-dry German Riesling with a slightly nutty and earthy sheep's milk cheese or even earthy cow's milk cheese such as Manchego, Rocinante, Vento d'Estate (cow and sheep, aged with straw around the rind, Italy), etc.

  • bobbytiger

The way you started honking down that cheese Gary, reminded me a bit of your father, who it seems, hasn't eaten for days before he serves as a guest on your show.
QOTD- While I enjoy the Chevre Montchevre goat cheese, I don't really have a favorite pairing wine. I usually drink with a heavier oaked chard, or lighter torrantes.

  • BruceS

Great show, Gary! Reminded me of why I started watching WLTV. Lots of good, solid information right from the start…unlike guest shows which waste loads of time on idle chatter. I'm here for your expertise and the more you share the better. BTW is there hope you'll be doing more wine/food pairings? That's an art many of us would like to master. QOTD: I vote for Riesling with Manchego. I struggle to find a Sauvignon Blanc I can enjoy since I can't stand to be in the same room with a bell pepper. My failing 🙁

Often times the cheese does not taste nearly as bad as it smells. Personally, I love stinky cheese, the more stink the more it syncs, with wine that is. I don?t know if that last sentence is actually true, but I think it is! When trying new things, especially cheese and dishes that smell/look like they are not to be consumed; sometimes you have to dive in head first!

  • Anonymous

going to have to jump on the bandwagon and agree with Allan here, but hey if you like goat cheese with reds then drink/eat on brother!

  • Anonymous

I’m in for a pound. Pair it with big reds?

    Show us Sashas Cellar!

  • stephen

very nice, it is as it should be, your favorite wine with food that you like and to hell with everybody else

  • stephen

    Favorite cheese and wine combo
    Verdejo with a stilton

  • Classic 3 wine show. No nonsense. Like that.

QOTD: Blue stilton with sauternes. Oh my gosh.

  • Gary,

Wow, “Lobster Point” a suggested food pairing for the wine on the label. Where have I seen that before? Oh yeah, I invented it with Pizza Vino 5 years ago. I guess imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

QOTD; Saint-Andre cheese on Baguette with any good Red Rhones. (St. Joseph the last time)

  • aeggert

Good show! I may have to give that Mount Nelson a try. I am a “red guy” but am always on the look out for good whites to expand my palate.

QOTD: I have not really done any tasting specifically with cheese and wine, but I used that free shipping code and I'm going to try some Delice D'Argental (http://gourmetlibrary.com/products/27684-Delice…) with the 2007 Pontifical Chateauneuf Du Pape Rouge (http://winelibrary.com/wines/47221-2007+Pontifi…) that I picked up earlier this week.

Sasha does love to eat on the show.

  • Hey Gary

Nice show. IF you think that NZ Sav is popular in the US, you should see it in the Australian market. A Kiwi Sav Blanc is Australia's highest selling white wine. Sav Blanc is a one I'd never buy to drink myself, but it is such a crowd pleaser these days.

QOTD: Too be honest any. A big problem i think is that we don't eat normally just eat one wine with cheese but a selection…

    Cheers
    Andrew

  • Krunch

Will you be serving BRIGADIEROS? par a bem para voce!

  • Anonymous

Ratings make you buy wine, that is their intention. It is up to you to decide whether or not they influence your decision. We don’t watch a movie and say that was great just because some critic gave it a thumbs up.

  • winecrazy

QOTD: I had 2005 Botromagno Primitivo the other day with some Parmigiano Reggiano and enjoyed it very much. I was unaware that I had 3 bottles there and just picked them up last week after a year….lol

  • drt999

QOTD — these days it's fresh chevre with a NC or similar Riesling (lots of stone fruit/apple, lots of acid, not quite off-dry) on a sesame or poppy seed cracker

  • SourGrapesFC

    so say we all
