lines of the day – ‘Golden yellow; like if you drank a crap load of beers and haven’t been to the bathroom in a while’, and; ‘If you’re married you need to stay away from this wine, it’s very seductive’

GV’s prophecy that this week will be a phenomenal one for Wine Library TV whets the appetite…I can’t wait

I have had some Canadian wines (living in Michigan, its not hard to come by them). Thanks for the ice wine review. Never had an ice wine, but this could be the week. Doing a Tweet & Taste of a Michigan producer… Black Star Farms (#ttmi) on Monday the 8th and may have to follow it up with some cheesecake and an ice wine!

QOTD: Worst prediction. . . Red Wings would beat Penguins in Game 7 of Stanley Cup Finals last year. (A close second is that the Lions would win 4 games on '09).

  • QOTD: I predicted Obama would lose the election.

  • Thanks for the moment of focus for Chile…I was hoping that you would at least mention it, and a dedication show would be a great thing. I've been working a post at Vermont Wine Media, adding links to information about the situation in wine country, as I find them. Christian M. helped out with a link to the Chilean wine industry publication – Vendimia.

sideQOTD: We've made a coupe of trips through the wine country of Quebec just to our north tasting and picking up things as we went. A very interesting fortified wine with fruit maceration at Vignoble de l'Orpailleur, and a KILLER Pommeau at a Ciderie across the road from there.

QOTD: In third grade, I led the class debate supporting Jimmy Carter's re-election…boy was I wrong about that, and was devastated. And then they took his solar collectors off the White House roof to boot!

Nice episode. I live just south of Buffalo so i try to make it up to NOTL as much as possible. Peller estates is phenomenal. They even have a pretty good meritage which is obviously rare. Cab Franc ice wine is their best.

    Gary,
I just spent the last two months catching up with the old episodes and am finally up to date. I want to thank you for all the free content. It has been very educational and fun. Keep it up, I hope you have at least another 800 in you.

QOTD: My worst prediction of all time is actually documented here: http://www.blog.bigwebapps.com/bigpicture/2007/

Prediction of how the iPhone was going to be a flop… OOPS!

    jasonRmoore

  • My cousin dated a guy who owned a vineyard in Niagara Peninsula in Ontario (we're all from Buffalo). Since I was 15ish, I can say with authority that Canadian wine was the first commercial wine I ever had. It's been too many years, I'll have to revisit.

  • TommyB

Sorry can't think of an answer to the QOTD! Have to admit though that as yet I have never tried an icewine – need to sort that out v. soon. Don't put up your gloves yet Gary! Chin up!

  • Chris

    Hi Gary,

Been checking in to your show from time to time for awhile now and love it! Starting to get some courage and motivation, with the help of your advice, to get some projects off the ground….so thank you for the continued motivation..
On the wine note, you've got to try some wine made here in BC with grapes brought in from private vineyards in California. It's absolutely phenomenal! ..it's a small “garage winery” and I've been really interested to know what you think of it if i send over a bottle..

Thanks for continuing to show Canadian wine the love! I'm a big fan of the Cave Spring Riesling, and Henry of Pelham's Pinot and Gamay Noirs. I've had some solid merlot from that area too.

QOTD: Worst prediction ever: U.S.A. wins the gold and Ryan Miller becomes the new face of hockey. Instead Red Wings fans worst dreams came true when Cindy scored the over time winner, and continues to be the face of hockey.

  • QOTD side: No.
QOTD: I did think MP3's would disappear in favor of much better sounding compression when storage became so cheap. I'm disappointed I'm wrong on that one.

  • Phil G

    Yes, had some Canadian wines.

I can't stand Sidney Crosby. Couldn't anyone else on that team score the winner? How about he scores over 1500 points or wins 4-5 Cups before we annoint him. W/O Malkin and Gonchar, that team would be horrible. Maybe in 10 years, he will get near Howe, Orr, Messier, Lemieux, or Gretzky. Not now. Probably not ever (I hope).

QOTD – I predicted the Red Wings would win last year (see above), but the worst prediction, I predicted that the Red Sox would NEVER win the world series. In 2003 that seemed like a valid prediction. Damn…

  • Tom T.

My worse prediction was that Isiah Thomas would bring great things (like a championship) to the Knicks. He did just the opposite and drove the team into the ground.
And it would be a great thing to do an episode on Chilean wines.

    Gary:
Great episode on Inniskillin ice wine, To expensive for me.
I live in the niagara peninsula only min away.Love red wines more.

I picked Canada to win GOLD in hockey! Remember HOCKEY IS CANADA'S GAME!

Sasha`s perdiction way out. I can't belive he did not pick canada in the final 3.
Keep the great episodes coming, Been watching from the beginning. cheers

    A true CAN UCK!

  • QOTD1: Yes I have had Canadian wine, some of the best from the Pelee Island Winerey (of course on Pelee Island wich is the southernmost inhabited portion of Canada. Its a great experiecne to get there on the ferry boats and have a great outdoor picnic and grilling area where you purchase meat to grill and have with your wine surrounded by the vineyards….everyone should try it.

Check out their site at peleeisland[dot]com They have an amazing vidal ice wine too…nectar of the gods.

QOTD2: Loving the questions….probably the result of the 2008 US election; I'm sure there are plenty of more but I try to block them out and move on without dwelling on them.

PS–What is the “shuffling cards” sound that I hear in the background….oh got it some photograpgher's shutter clicking. What article/piece is that for?

  • First off stop hating on my Phins GV, you know they own you and the Sanchize. Secondly and more important is thanks for calling out J. Boyer at VT. The man is a philosopher and a scholar and by far the most entertaining Professor I ever had at that fine university. He was almost guaranteed to win the best Professor award year in and year out. I had his World Regions class and it was one of the most thought provoking classes I took in higher education. He approached the subject from the view of the people and their culture and the reasons for the way things are percieved around the world. It is amazing that he could captivate a 550 person class the way he did with insane stunts and skits that all Vayniacs would love. He also introduced me to “City of God” and many other great foreign films. You should try to get him as a guest or do a show from the Burg because I think you two would put on a instant classic.

QOTD: Oklahoma over USC, hardly wrong on the big games.

  • Braden G

The True North Strong And Free!!
Canada makes some great wines – including one GV has reviewed in the past – Osoyoos Larose. Add to that Mission Hill (Love the Oculus), Burrowing Owl, Black Hills (Nota Bene is awesome!) and so many more including some awesome Cab Francs. We “ice-holes” have a lot more than ice-wine up here to rock the wine world. Come visit!
QOTD – I predicted I had the right numbers for the lottery… was very wrong.

    L8R Vaynerpeeps.

  • Hi Gary,

Just watched the show, really good, never had a Canadian wine but I promise I will.

All the best to your friends in Chile.

QOTD: I can't think of anything for me, but probably the worst prediction ever was when Neville Chamberlain said “Peace in our time” in 1938…

  • NY Pete

cmon, I'm leaving for an offline soon … need my Vayner-fix for the day … 😛

  • Great show…great pic of your daughter…sooo adorable! Thank you so much for mentioning Chile…a Chile show would be great. The frantic text messages and phone calls started pretty quickly after my parents heard the news. My heart goes out to all the people affected (a few family friends are).

I went to Blacksburg for a friend's wedding…had a great time until the middle of the reception when I found we lost my wife's grandfather. The area is gorgeous, and I wish I had more time to visit the area wineries. Checked out the Plaid Avenger and Boyerwine.com…keep up the great work! Kudos to all wine educators out there as well.

QOTD: I would say many of my final exam grades last semester.
SideQOTD: I had one wine from Niagara…a riesling perhaps…tasty. I really want to try more when I can now that my facial cast is off.

Gary, I've been watching you for a year now and you need to interview Maynard James Keenan from Tool he's growing wine in Arizona at the Caduceus Cellars winery. This could be a massive show in terms of ratings. You need to interview him, Please do I would appreciate it so much.
