lines of the day – ‘Golden yellow; like if you drank a crap load of beers and haven’t been to the bathroom in a while’, and; ‘If you’re married you need to stay away from this wine, it’s very seductive’

GV’s prophecy that this week will be a phenomenal one for Wine Library TV whets the appetite…I can’t wait

why would u need a dislike button? My the MSU reference struck a sour note…

  • Gary, thanks for the VT shoutout. I could tell you a million stories of John Boyer. I want to send you a copy of his text book: the Plaid Avenger. It's got a lot of great info.

Hokies are a big part of my life. Did you know I learned how the internet works by building my own student journalism website? http://planetblacksburg.com

  • Never had Canadian wine. In fact I've never heard of a Gewurztraminer. Researching now.

  • courtier

My worst prediction: that I could never get into the grad school that I did!

  • Never had a candian wine, but excited to try! Actually had a gewurztrasminer last year at a restaurant (villa maria 07 I think) and I sent it back because of the FUMES it was releasing. Looking back on it it might have been my pallet, but I just was not ready to deal with a wine like that.

QOTD: No clue, my bad predictions I forget, but I have a ton of good ones that I remember!

    Great show!

  • Hahaha thank god they did! allez les bleus!

  • LMNOPinot

    Hey Gary,

QOTD: I predicted I would figure out how to shoot lasers out of my eyes by the age of 30. I'm 31 and a failure.
The Olympics were a great time here in Vancouver buts it's nice to get back to reality and focus on the BIG things like shooting lasers out my eyes.
    Okanagan show soon?

  • chukheadted

my worst prediction: that the colts would beat up the saints!

  • Anonymous

You mean that isn’t the way you spell it?

  • Anonymous

Yes, port is considered a dessert wine.

  • Sweet show Gary!

    Qotd1: Not yet…
Qotd2: Being a Snooker fan i usually predict that John Higgins will win, and most of the time he does…!
Agree with you on the acid aspect, The Inniskillin may be too big for me, but if it has enough acid to really get it up to the next level… Love sweet things, but quickly gets tiresome…. Too much.
This weeks shows sounds good, gary. You look P-U-M-P-E-D! And Mischa, what a lovely child you have there gary, congrats.
Will buy some Chilean wine this week, the Vaynernation should do the same!

  • Brad

Completely agree w/ the 0-40 comment. Why not taste Icewines or other dessert wines comparatively? Harder work but more fair, I'd say (especially in terms of scoring). I'm particularly skeptical about RS. Deliciousness yes. But even RS in unbalanced and/or high alcohol reds can make you think deliciousness. It might be, but I definitely think “Dessert wine” should be tasted/scored side-by-side, and high RS in dry wines should be advertised (assuming you can determine it).

  • MarcBelgium

    QOTD1. No, never
QOTD2. That all people will become selfisch and with no culture.

    Nice show.

  • Blythesville

QOTD: That the West Indies would win the 1983 World Cup (OK, bring a little cricket love here).

QOTD2: Yup, live in Canada and, like our Olympians, proud of our wines (that we do well). Le Clos Jordanne has been doing some spectacular Burgundian-style Pinots and Chardonnays.

Props to you for doing the Canadian show today. Thanks! The respect was appreciated.

  • YoungDave

QOTD 1.) YES to Canadian wines! I used to carry Inniskillin Vidal Ice Wine when I worked in Boston, I've carried Konzelmann Vidal Ice Wine out here in LA (just as good at a fraction of the price), and I once drove around the Niagara Peninsula wine route tasting at a few of the wineries up there.
QOTD 2.) When I moved into this apartment I swore that it would be my final residence before moving in with someone for good… and now my room mate and I are moving yet again in July. I HATE MOVING!!

  • nitaT

I have ice wine in my cellar but have not tired it yet.

QOTD: well.. it wasnt really a prediction but, I was nervous that my son applied to too hard of colleges and that he may not get into any of them.. he got into 6 out of 9. lots of stress and fighting for nothing.

  • SQOTD: Royal de Maria Riesling Icewine and Royal de Maria Vidal Icewine is my only meeting with Canadian wine. I try to try different things all the time. As a chocolate tasting provider, i would say that certain chocolate can go really well with the Inniskillin, perhaps a 50% italian milkchocolate 😀

QOTD: well that might be that the Soviet union would still exist in the 1990's. It's good to be wrong sometimes.

    TGSSCaD

  • SS_Chris

    I agree Cabbie!!

  • zman15

Why eat dessert when you can drink it!! Being from upstate NY Inniskillin has long been one of my favs but DOLCE was my first dessert wine love and is still on top.

  • drt999

QOTD#1 — LOL, I have just ordered the Malivoire before seeing the show. I wonder if it will be sold out before the order is processed. After that review, probably not!
    QOTD#2 — 1980 presidential election

    SS–don't preen too much!

  • WineWoman

Yes on the Canadian wine question. Cave Springs Riesling and Various Ice Wines, including the Inniskillin.
QOTD: A presidential election was my worst prediction. Specifically, Bill Clinton getting elected.

  • Bob Gray

Make sure you try an icewine with some acidity to it. It needs the balance or the sweetness just ruins the experience. I prefer Riesling to Vidal in Ontario Icewines.

  • bobbytiger

First of all Gary, don't beat yourself up over the last show. It' not like it is your fault that the wines sucked.
I don't really drink a lot a Canadian wines, and, since the Canadians beat the USA in hockey this past week end, I now expect to drink even fewer. Me, hold a grudge?
QOTD: It has something to do with Obama. [Not in a good way].

  • Nice show even though I'm still bitter about the game from Sunday. Now we have to see the Crosby goal during every hockey game for the rest of the season.

QOTD #1 – I had some Canadian wine at the Finger Lakes wine festival. I find ice wine way too sweet for my taste. Most of the ones I've tried remind me of cough syrup.

QOTD #2 – Last year I predicted the Jets would win the Super Bowl and they didn't make the playoffs.

  • awesome head of hair!

  • I agree, there is a halo around Gary’s head, and I’m pretty sure it does not belong there…

  • Dennis

Hey Gary, Thanks for the Hokie shoutout! I am in John Boyer's class right now, and you should totally checkout http://www.boyerwine.com

  • Kathy Litalien

Thanks Gary for this great wine review. I'm a Canadian fan of yours who never tuned in to your wine reviews because of the fear of frustration at not being able to find the stuff you talk about in my highly regulated province of Ontario… p.s. loved the hockey game and the olympics, thanks for mentionning it 🙂

  • aeggert

Great show, Gary. The price point on that Ice Wine is a little intimidating, but I would like to try it out sometime.

Side QOTD: I have not had any Canadian wines. I tried to find some of Gretzky's wines after that episode, but the distribution of wine up here in Maine isn't the greatest.

QOTD: I generally try to avoid predicting things since I hate the disappointment. But in the last Summer Olympics I predicted that Ian Crocker would shut down Phelp's run for the record number of Golds and was sadly denied that satisfaction.

  • jayhitek

QOTD: Patriots Giants superbowl. I knew we were going to loose. It was just like the SB game we played against the Rams. Huge underdogs and no one had faith. And we won. We were too big of a team against the Giants. We were supposed to win that game and I didn't like it.

So I am going with a prediction that I nailed. And I am not happy about it.

#2 And I am going with a prediction that I didn't make but the Boston weathermen made a few weeks ago. Those arseholes predicted 18″ of snow, they cancelled school a day in advance, sent my kids home from school early in a total panic.. And we got ZERO inches.

  • tonezpeconez

It's not that you referenced MSU but rather that you told Gary not to visit VT.

  • Jay

A big storm hit France pretty hard yesterday (and much of Western Europe's Atlantic coast)
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8542361.stm

  • no worries, you can get our snow instead, we have like gotten 2 inches every other day since dec 17th and we don't close schools for a mere meter of snow. some problems with trains and busses, a few roofs collapsing, but thats winter for ya 🙂

  • CBone

Boooooooo!! I was so heartbroken on Sunday.

Side QOTD: I have, several. They are easy to come by where I am originally from (Buffalo) and where my family lives. In DC, where I live now, they are rare. I've had three ice wines and a couple Gewurztraminers. I thought all the ice wines were sickly sweet and one of them kicked in my gag reflex, and the Gewurtztraminers, on both occasions, I found to taste of skunky beer, honestly. Maybe Molson made them, I don't know.

QOTD: My worst prediction was that Republicans would become reasonable people in the post Bush Plague years, willing to work for the betterment of their nation. Guess not. They became worse.

  • DAveAll

Yes, had canadian wines. I watched them pick the ice wine grapes December 2008 at Inniskilin – after midnight. Palatine Hills winery actually had better ice wines than Inniskillin, but it's hard to beat the success of Inniskillin. And I tend 1 acre of Vidal here in North Carolina.
QOTD: I predicted JAVA would never catch on in the IT industry.

  • Krunch

As some of you may have seen Gary has been very busy lately, Well now you can see what he has been up too.

He has been helping his LONG LOST cousin start his own program.

    http://www.viddler.com/explore/ablakeforum/vide

This was TOOO funny to pass up on not posting it here.

  • Bryan

Have had tons of Niagara Ontario wines here.

The pinot noir, chardonnay, cabernet franc and even viognier does well up there in addition to the ice wines.

  • Fonzie1568

If you are gonna make a shlep anywhere, we would love to have you visit our brand new wine club at hofstra law school (under 5 months old) out here on long island!!!

  • yapdiver

Love Inniskillin Ice wine. The Finger Lakes in NY make produce some great ice wine as well. Not much more experience with Canadian wines. Not a fan of much from far North America & Canada other than Rieslings.

QOTD: Predicted that my Steelers would repeat as Super Bowl Champions this year! NOT!!!!!

  • VJ

wooot woot plaid avenger. gary go to http://www.plaidavenger.com and check it out.

  • VJ

by the way that is professor boyer's evil twin brother's “plaid” cast. Go hokies and JB!

  • I have NEVER had Canadian wines… triggered my attention though.

QOTD: Two of my best friends being together for like EVER. Broke up last week after 3,5 years. Well, that's life.

  • Krunch

QOTD: I predicted Al Gore was going to be President, Boy did we all pay for that one!!!!

  • Right there with you on economics…that happened last semester.

  • Richie

QOTD: I predicted that the weather here would be better by march. It's march. And it still sucks. I have had 2 Canadian wines so far. The Quails Gate 2007 Dry Riesling and the Gray Monk 2008 unwooded Chardonnay. I had them at a Christmasdinner on UBC campus in Vancouver last year wenn I visited my brother. I really liked them both. Great jobs from Okanagan Valley.

PS: You should do some German Riesling dessert wines on the show. It seems to me that you have never done things like Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese or German Icewine. I would be very happy to see a few episodes on that.

  • missatiejacket

great episode. I have had a couple of Canadian wines, but only icewine. I've had vidal icewine from Inniskillin and from Jackson Triggs — I don't remember the vintages. Both were delicious. The Inniskillin was a lot more complex, but you'd hope so given the high price. I don't know what my worst prediction of all time would be, but recently I predicted that two friends of mine would become romantically involved and things really did not work out. sad.

Gary, I’ve been watching you for a year now and you need to interview Maynard James Keenan from Tool he’s growing wine in Arizona at the Caduceus Cellars winery. This could be a massive show in terms of ratings. You need to interview him, Please do I would appreciate it so much.

  • RAD

Several years ago, we were in Victoria and spent a couple days visiting the wineries of Vancouver Island. Delightfully crisp and clean whites, wonderfully made, and some varieties that were new to us. All-in-all, as good as anywhere. Very sad that we can't get them here in California

  • Hi Gary

Please can you do a Chile show. It would be great to show some support by picking some great Chilean wines. I'm sure we'll all agree it's really tragic what's happened there and hope they can start to recover as soon as possible. I've heard from a few suppliers, one winery's lost 40 million litres but they were all safe and that's the most important thing.

How does the GV nation feel about seeing if Gary will do this one?
