GV’s prophecy that this week will be a phenomenal one for Wine Library TV whets the appetite…I can’t wait

  • So GV all these VT posts and no response? Sorry I'm on top of it, I'm at work in our school library (Newman Library) till midnight so this is what I do on Monday and Thursday, now i have something to direct my energy towards 🙂

  • JHokie

Hokies love you!! Make a trip here asap!

  • Don Simpson

That's what I'm talking about!!! Phenomenal show. Buckled up and ready.

SQOTD: 1 Canadian wine. I had a Gewurtztraminer from Niagara for this past Thanksgiving. It was VERY floral and an excellent play with the turkey.

QOTD: Worst prediction ever = thinking the Redskins would win the Super Bowl after they brought Joe Gibbs back. Dead wrong. Still terrible… Mike Shannahan better CRUSH IT!!!

  • Imueller

I am a long time lurker (ltl). Cool show! Ice wine is awesome! and is the only kind of Canadian wine I have ever had. Wanted to tell Gary that Metro State in Denver is also into WLTV!

  • Don Simpson

Is the professor the Plaid Avenger? I watched one of those videos and that dude has some serious energy! Impressive!

  • Don Simpson

I watched one of those Plaid Avenger videos. Are you the wine professor at VT that Gary referenced? I enjoyed the creativity quite a bit.

  • scottEJ

Thanks, G. Canada was quite the gracious host for the Olympics.

    QOTD: Both Bush elections.

  • lovebarca

Nope. The plaid avenger is a friend of Prof. Boyer's. They work together though.

  • O'Shea

Must be nice playing a game where the worst you can do is get a silver medal.

QOTD: I bet on the KC Chiefs last season. I must have been drunk.

  • Don Simpson

This is awesome you're doing this down at Virginia Tech. I went to JMU and wish they had a wine program there! It's exciting to hear the drinking culture of America is changing and folks are getting into wine at a younger age. I didn't REALLY get into wine until I was about 27. Keep up the great work and I'll be on the lookout for Hokies in the VA wine industry!

  • vtsara

Thanks for the Virginia Tech Shout it! GV and JB are too awesome.

  • Longtime lurker… my first comment on WLTV…
1st question: I lived in WNY and visited the wine regions of Niagara Peninsula Canada a few different times. The best was the Ice Wine Festival that included a huge bar made from ice and several tastings of the areas ice wines. Great stuff! Also tasted a few non-dessert wines up there.

2nd question: knew the Buffalo Bills would not win any of their 4 superbowls 🙁

  • JOEYdaMUSH

I predicted to EVERYONE that the Bengals would beat the Jets in the Wildcard, not only that, but that it would be a very low scoring game. And I put my money where my mouth was too. I lost $600 oin the Bengals, $600 on the under, and $500 on a Bengals-Under parlay. I hate you Dustin Keller.

    never had it

  • Yes sir, Don. That's me. Well, I am the professor, and I'm good friends with the masked man as well.

  • Michael

Is there any way we can do something for Chile through winelibrary.com? For a few days, donate a buck for every bottle of Chilean wine you sell, or something to that effect? Maybe allow people to donate to Chile through your website? Just spitballin'.

  • tortillaflat

Your passion and energy is contagious! New to your show and look forward to seeing many more of your episodes.

Never tried Canadian wine, but would love to try some Pinot from Okanagan.

QOTD: Worst prediction Broncos to win Superbowl XXIV against the Redskins (55-10, Denver lost).

  • hokiexcrunner

GV thanks for the Virginia Tech shout out! It would be great to have you and Boyer join forces in a video/lecture.

  • D_Rod

QOTD: Ha. I work in finance and [am forced to] give forecasts. I make shitty predictions all the damn time.

  • oneqbit

Thanks for the VT shout out, everyone in Boyer's class loves the show. All of us at VT with a little bit of you (and a little bit of Professor Boyer) are definitely going to be changing the wine world! Look out for the Masked Avenger!

  • vtsierra

Thanks for the Hokie shout out!! Our class has worked hard to get your attention; we hope to see you at Tech sometime this semester!

  • hahahaha solid answer lovebarca! Way to protect the secret identity!

  • lovebarca

    you know it.

  • I have never had a dessert wine. When I went to the Cayman Islands with my family a few years back, the manager of the restaurant we ate at gave us all a free glass of Port wine. It was on the house because we had a hefty bill. Is Port considered a dessert wine?

  • amgryger

About a year ago I got to try the '99 Inniskillin Ice Wine. It was fantastic.

  • ChrisNY2

I really need to try an ice wine or a dessert wine with a bombastic delicious factor.

QOTD: Couldn't think of a past prediction, but I predict that Ke$ha's 15 minutes of fame are almost up. I'm probably wrong, but I wish that I wasn't.

  • BuddhaChu

I'm not reading all the comments, but did anyone pick up on the way “neighbors” is spelled in the show's description? Nice one Mott. 😉

  • drsmooth

Thanks for the VT shout out!!! You and Boyer in a video lecture would be like drinking a good wine while the Jets knock the Pats out of the playoffs, epic.

  • SocialDrinker

QOTD: the Eagle would beat the Cowboys

  • lordsauvignon

Good show. You really should take the time to get down to Virginia Tech. I am not a hokie, but I have toured around some of the vineyards in central VA and there is no reason you couldn't enjoy your time educating the up and coming generation as well as explore a little in Virginia wine country. That and I know you would have a fabulous time. If you don't you can blame me. All I'm saying is its worth the trip hands down.

QOTD: No I will not bs you, I haven't tried a Canadian wine. The farthest North I've gotten in the Western Hemisphere was Maine.
Worst predication ever was to trust someone who ended up betraying on me.

  • wineoHOKIE

thanks for the big HOKIE shout-out. still working on doing the sniffy-sniff test. John Boyer (aka the Plaid Avenger) is revolutionizing the wine world here in Blacksburg, with your help of course! Hope to get to see you and Boyer together in action someday!

  • Thanks for the Canada episode, Gary. We're all a bit bleary-eyed in Vancouver today. It was a great hockey game and such a close match so kudos to both teams.

QOTD1: Having recently moved back to Canada, I can say they are making some surprisingly good wine. Ten years ago, you wouldn't really consider buying it but the quality has improved considerably. Whites seem to be the best bet but I've had some decent pinot noir and some very good rosé from the Okanagan.

QOTD2: My worst prediction would be political so we don't want to go there. My latest prediction was that you would not be able to spit out the Inniskillin ice wine. Another killer Niagara ice wine is Henry of Pelham Special Select Late Harvest Riesling.

  • John Martelly

Great show “G” man. I have had two or three different Canadian dessert wines in the past. Bad experience, sugar overload like cotton candy meets Fun Dips. One of the better ones I have had comes from Westport Vineyard in Massachusetts.

BTW, maybe next time you do dessert wines you could discuss “noble rot?” Again, nice job.

  • QOTD: I predicted before the 2009-10 NFL season that the Tennessee Titans would be the Super Bowl champs. I did not predict an 0-6 start.

  • Beeper

    sideQOTD: Nope
QOTD: Thought my Vikes had the Superbowl this year…

  • I admit I'm a lurker and a Canadian to boot, with your kind words about our big gold medal win in hockey just had to do my first post. My worst call ever has to be from around 5 years ago or so, I predicted my Cowboys were going to be a dynasty and win 3 superbowls in the next five years. Made the mistake of saying this to my buddy that never forgets anything, so every year I get reminded. Thanks for the lessons on wine. Allan

  • Plaid Avenger is the MAN! thanks for the shout out Gary!

  • klausshmidheiser

Plaid Avenger is the MAN! thanks for the shout out Gary!

  • corkscrew

I have tried and enjoyed ice wine, but is a bit pricey will stick to port. http://www.winelx.com

  • rodphillips

I run a chain of Liquor Stores here in Victoria B.C. If Gary wants a selection of Okanagan Pinot's I will collect them and send them along.

  • mattgmann

if gary doesn't want them, you can send them down here!

  • tonezpeconez

QOTD: I once predicted that the Plaid Avenger and John Boyer were the same person… I was wrong.

… My next prediction, Gary Vaynerchuk will come visit Virginia Tech within the next 2 months. (please don't make me look bad a second time)

  • KnightWKNF

Yes I have tried several Canadian wines one of my friends took a trip to Niagra falls to see both sides and visited many Canadian wineries and brought back quiet the load that I have been priveledge to try. I have been very surprised by the quailty of the reds that they can produce.

    I love Ice Wine too!!

QOTD: Picking the Bengals over the Jets… ended up in second place because of that one pick…. (only to try to redeem myself in latter rounds I picked them the rest of the way through).

  • Josh

Epic lurker here Gary. Talk about a coincidence, I just finished a paper about the Niagara Peninsula in Canada for a wine class that you inspired me to take at Michigan State University. I rep the show in that class whenever I can! Its awesome to see some of the wines reviewed that I just wrote a paper about. And forget Virginia Tech, you should come to MSU for a visit, I'm sure my class would be thrilled (even though this is unrealistic). Been watching your show for a couple years, since before I was 21.

sideQOTD:Yes I've been to the Niagara region and tried a couple of their wines, all were excellent. You should try some Baco Noir or Marechal Foch varietals.

  • Hokiehandgrenade

Keep bringin' the thunder Gary! It'd be awesome if you could work out a trip to Blacksburg. Virginia Tech loves some WLTV!

  • tonezpeconez

    where's the dislike button?

  • Nic

Pour les vins canadiens, pinot noir et chardonnay du Clos Jordanne.

Pire prédiction: la France ne gagnera pas la coupe du monde de soccer en 1998. Annus horribilis.

  • Liquid gold, it is, that Inniskillin Vidal.
It's inevitable that the judges at wine competitions after sipping 100 zins go nuts about the dessert wines that follow – ice wines and late-harvest-anything-white. Imagine going from zero sugar to Wolffer (Long Island, NY) Estate's LH Chard @38-40, yes 40, Brix.
Back to Canada: I've had some really interesting offbeat varietals from Okanagan, like Kerner and Ehrenfelser (Gray Monk), as well as blends one doesn't see too often, like Gewurz/Riesling (Hainle). As great as it is to find a good wine bottle made from major grapes, it's a kick to uncover the unexpected. Dornfelder anyone? It'll turn your teeth purple.

  • hollisdevillo

the inniskillin winery has been doing some great stuff. they also are located in the okanagan. i did a malbec tasting with one from argentina, the innskillin malbec, and a cahors. the mendoza one being fruity and delicious; the cahors, earthy, stinky and delicious; and the inniskillin, right down the middle, with fruit and dirtiness and deliciousness. definitely a try if not had before.
all of my predictions are of little importance whatever. they are only remembered by the ones that came out on top.

  • omallley

    Great show Gary!

Yes, I've had quite a few Canadian wines before, granted it might be a little easier for me being in Canada and all. Gary, it may be time to expand your palate with some Nova Scotian wine (yes, there's some decent juice being made east of Ontario). I'd love to send you a couple of the ice wines/sparklers – ripping acidity in both given the relatively cool climate in comparison with the rest of the country…but I digress…

Worst prediction? Probably that the Leafs would have a shot at making the playoffs this season…ugh.
