90/100

line of the day – ‘If you’re a bandwagon fan that’s the worst of all – makes me want to vomit all over myself’

This show was a bit slow to warm up, but came on strong in the second half when the sports chat came to the fore. Good stuff

If all the cops were like this guy then all my experiences would have been more positive. This guy is awesome have him back!!!

  • Grill Factor

Yea episode #679, they’ve changed the label for the ’07. I really thought the ’06 was exactly what I was looking for but unfortunately only bought 1 case. I have had ZERO luck in finding more of the ’06.

Good guest- thanks, Chris! No BS here!

  • Hey Gary off topic…

You should really do an “Orange Wines” tasting. Been hearing a lot about them lately but haven't have the chance to try one yet.

Just psyched to be among the first 10 commenters!

    Cops???

  • Top 10!

  • castello

    top ten?

  • I swear I'm wearing the exact same shirt as Chris the Cop in my most recent video I just made.

  • scotmcleland

Waaaaaaayyyyyyy to many guests for my liking GV. I guess once in a while is ok but to me it just seems to take the energy out of the show. I like you fired up and when you have guests (other than dad I have to say) your energy just doesn't seem to come out. I understand you have to let tham talk and be semi low key but I prefer you to do the show alone. JMO….Also, would like to see another show down in the library. I do really like the show from different venue's or locations!!! Keep up the great work bro!!

Chris The Cop…seems like a real good guy, good guest, would enjoy drinking wine with him, will look for him at next WL Grand Tasting in October. Not a huge Riesling fan, more Chard or Viognier. Is the #4 for The Fantastic Four or for Brett Favre…. Gary did he give you a PBA card or Shield?? QOTD I am guessing be said “Bullies”…when I was a kid, had a neighbor who was a bit crazy and would get in your face..so one time I popped him, one punch knockout, broke his nose..got in trouble but boy the respect from then on was worth it. http://www.winelx.com

  • what about the less guests this year?
but I don't care, bring on the wine!!

  • Epic episode guys.
No, bring on the guests because it allows us to see real talk.

    Best cop incident:
got pulled over, was doing the bit, sat outside the car when his partner collapsed and started having a seizure. I being first aid certified helped keep him secure and safe (even telling the partner to secure his weapon) and I got a “pass”

    Worst:
Coming home from college in New Mexico.
Was half a block from home, got pulled over for having only one plate (NM only has one plate) when I tried to explain, i was told I was a wise ass and i couldn't find my insurance card (if you've ever driven home from college you know how packed your car is) and they towed my car….half a block from home!!

    Well that's it!

  • ninefingers

Talking about 'smell-problems', I lost my sense of smell years ago, some of its ability has come back. I cannot smell vanilla, but I can smell the alcohol that its married too! I also have extreme sensitivity to diesel. My nose sensitivity is > 1 part per million verified through an NJ oil spill Clean-up. I still cannot trust my smeller, but the wine crossing my pallet works fine for me.

I like Mosel's because the proof is less than 20. I do not like the “dry” Rieslings!

  • laurieinvt

QOTD: ooh, man, what a question! Best was some years ago when a Statey pulled me over for a missing front plate (on the seat beside me)- he was cool with that so no ticket, but when I went to hand him my license he put his hand in the window. I had forgotten that I had our Plott Hound in the back seat- instantly, there was a snarling set of huge white fangs between my head and the window- scared the crap out of me (the trooper had excellent reflexes, luckily) and as I yelled at my dog and apologized to the trooper, he said, “That's all right, ma'am. He's doing just what he's supposed to do. I shouldn't have reached into the car. No need to apologize.” He could've been a real p___k about it, but wasn't at all. That's just always stuck with me.

  • “Nice work if you can get it, now who the hell said it…. “

A fine show guys. Portugal rocks reds! Rheingau is better than Mosel though!

Qotd: Best one was this ep, nice going Chris. Bringing some good tasting notes out, and for being such a likeable chap. Worst one,,,, hmmm, i usually avoid the police,,,, hehe!

    Gary!
Would like a hinty-hint on Fridays winey-wines so i can tasty-taste along with you. OK?

  • subtlet

Worst cop experience was just a trivial speeding ticket. 7mph over was just an excuse to pull over a car full of kids in a small town.

Gary, what's worse, bandwagon sports fans, or lurkers?

  • scotmcleland

Alright, I guess I have to recant an bit after the Chris the cop episode. He was a good guest and you both had great energy! If guests were all like him and you melded with them like you did Chris, I would be good with guests. Maybe you need to step it up GV!!!! Get with the game brother, bring the energy!!!! LOL

  • jayhitek

Gary, 1992 called, they want the rugby shirt back. Is that Structure?
QOTD: Worst- Arresting an underage drinker at 20! Come on dammnit! I was 20! Give me a stern lecturing, yell at me, spit on me, call my mother, beat me up in the back of the cruiser. Just don't arrest me for being a 10 months away from legality. Then having to go before a judge, sucked! Wow.. was that really 16 years ago? Damn I'm old.
Best- Dunno, I have a bunch of friends that are cops and some of them are insane. Lots of fun times. I guess the best is when you can go out and you can hide behind that shield.. It's almost like being bullet proof.

  • laurieinvt

Orange wines as in the kind made with white wine grapes, or the kind made with oranges, raisins, etc.?

  • Sorry about the dry rieslings, you're missing out on a hell of alot! But to each his own palate, nuff said!

  • GLrocks

QOTD: not enough space to write either way. Great show though wine loving cop is just great I hope inspires more like him.

  • jason carey

is a 2008 Spatlese really ready to drink? Also Spaytlayze… not Spatlazy

  • reg55

The Answer of the Day: Worst was being stopped for DUI and slammed in the head on top of the cop car and thrown in with a guy that had just mass murder 4 people ( it was a little scary) What makes that the worst was I was being nice cooperating because I new I was wrong and he and his partner just treated me like dirt… But I lived… Great show Chris need to be a regular guest…

  • Cops are always nice and friendly if you are taking a tour of the police station, or if they are on the street handling crowds and stuff, but then they are all dicks actually on the street. Get pulled over and they have to find something to give you a ticket for, or lying about things to cover their ass and there is nothing you can do about it — a cop did a U-turn in the middle of a school zone and pulled over my brother because he wasn't wearing a seat belt when he pulled out of the driveway, then wrote the wrong street on the ticket so he wouldn't look like he was pulling an idiot move

Chris the Cop is badass though

  • ChicagoMatt

Solid episode. Chris the cop is great.

QOTD: Post-prom in HS. Cop pulls me over for speeding. My date showed him a little leg while looking for the car's registration. Let me off with a warning. Great cop…pervert, but great cop.

  • yapdiver

Funny episode. I am a K-9 cop in a different dept. but work with Yonkers PD often. Policing that city is no joke. While crime in NYC improves Yonkers is still the real deal. I am a huge fan of rieslings & was a fan of the Esporao 2006 as well. Disappointed that the 07 fails to deliver the goods. Portuguese wines are vastly under-rated so there are plenty of bargains to be found. Great timing for the episode. Inside of Grand Central today there is a Dijon, France exhibit and the wines of Faiveley in Burgundy are featured. I took my explosive recognition K-9 in there for a little SNIFFY, SNIFF! He gave a positive indication & sat down since those wines are the BOMB!

QOTD: Since I am a cop my opinion now is biased but before I got on the JOB I had many negative experiences with the PO, PO. In the height of the Crack cocaine epidemic I used to work at the City College of NY in Washinton Heights. The epicenter of crack dealing. Parking in that hood is impossible so often I had to park my car far from the university. Everytime I left work to return to my car after dark the local NYPD pct. cops would profile me as a crack buyer and toss me on the street usually with a profanity laced tirade of ” where you hiding the f**king rock”!!!!!!!! After a few months of this they began recognizing me as the clean cut white guy from the college and not a crack buyer from over the GWB in the Dirty Jerz. Ah! The good old days!!!!! LOL

  • Grill Factor

MAJOR disappointment on the Esporao. I drank the '06 like it was the fountain of youth…

  • i like how pimp he is!
reisling scares me, though i'm german.
had one for $20 and it was SWEET!
you taught me they don't have to be.
armed with this knowledge i'm in search of
    THUNDER.

  • abrams7

I have had a few bad memories with cops ,but I want talk about that. I'm lucky because
living in the country most of the police are just normal nice people. Alabama has some corruption ,but if you stay out of the city it a nice place to live.

  • Steve_T

Qotd: Freshman year of college, 3 of my house mates were robbed. The thieves entered through our living room and stole 3 laptops, 2 ipods, and 2 North Face book bags. My stuff was either locked down or in my room at the time so it was safe. After we filed the police report (7:30 a.m. on a sunday) two of the guys were upset and said they'd never see their stuff again. Aparantly, this guy had hit 20 different rooms on campus, so someone was able to identify him. The cops picked this guy up in less than 24 hours, and the 2 officers who took our report hand delivered the recovered posessions.

QOTD: Best: I was speeding along the interstate and a traffic cop saw me from the other side of the road. After going across the median and eventually pulling me over he asked me how fast I was going. I did not lie: 75 MPH. I explained that I was late for an appointment at Stanford. It turns out his son was a Stanford alum and he escorted me with flashing lights all the way. No ticket either. It was probably the most remarkable experience I have ever had and reminded me that cops are people too. (If I had told him that I went to Cal he probably would have given me a citation).

QOTD: Worst: The family was out getting an xmas tree and after picking out that year's tree instead of going home my wife said, let's get some Chinese so that we don't have to make dinner. At the restaurant I had a couple of beers to go along with the Kung Pao Chicken. On the way home with the tree roped onto the top of the car, traffic was all screwed up and I came to realize that it was a police checkpoint. There was no way to get out of the line of cars. When I finally got to the front a cop asked if I had been drinking and I said yes, with dinner. He timmediately old me to pull over. My wife and daughter watched as I had to walk a straight line touch my nose count backwards, etc. I don't know why but I was completely nervous and shaky/clumsy which didn't help prove my innocence. He finally asked me if I'd like to take a breathalizer test. It looked like if I didn't he was going take me to the station on suspicion. He said that if I had only drank two beers I should be fine. I blew really hard and it was a 0.03 – well below the 0.08 limit. I was on my way home. The thing that sucked was my daughter had to watch me look like a doofus. From that day on I learned two lessons: 1.) We now get the Xmas tree and go home immediately before imbibing alcohol; 2.) I can have two drinks at dinner and be fine to drive home without being nervous.

hey love the show my man ……
what about doing some wines from guys like Teusner Wines ….. and pete schell from spinafex wines … good aussie wines and great prices ……..

  • yapdiver

P.S. It's great to see other cops get into wine. Very few in my Dept have an interest or a clue about good beer never mind wine that doesn't come out of a jug or box! I think my police K-9 has a more refined palette than 99% of the cops on my job. He has a strict NO SWILL rule! Puts the paw up to anything he deems inferior & is a huge fan of Super Tuscans & White Burgundy.

  • abrams7

Hey i've been there about 4 years ago ,but luckly I had about 15 buddies with me!
I guess that is nothing to be proud of though is it?

  • Whatever happend to the big-ass glasses, have they gone to big-ass glass heaven?

  • Chilemily

QOTD: The worst time dealing with a police officer was when I got pulled over for following another car too closely with my brights on. Absurd. And, my brights weren't even that bright. I guess it just gave the cop something to do on a back country road.

PS Gary- PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do another show in honor of Chile!

  • LOL

  • alexthebrit

Dont know if its the same in the US but in the Uk if you are stopped by a cop and he asks you if you have anything to say ….hes hoping you might be abusive as he has tio write down your words verbatim so he can repaeat them in court. Anyway , I'm stopped for speeding and the cop keeps asking me if I have anything to say…. after the third time , bearing in mind the above I reply,” I will say anyhing you want officer as long as you dont hit me……again!!!!
With regards to Reisling, I love the dry versions, my first was a Brown Bros from OZ but more recently some New Zealand central Otago versions have exited me.

  • Whatever happend to the big-ass glasses, have they gone to big-ass glass heaven?

  • Agree with you, let's celebrate the greatness of Chile in these hard times.

I'm only buying Chillean wine this week!

  • Pazzzzzzzzz!! Will not watch this guest episode – see my comments to episode 825.

    Edwardo (viewer since episode 70)

  • Brian R

Great episode, loved the conversation. When you have a guest like Chris come onto the show, they really add a twist and an alternative opinion. I'm looking forward to the WL virtual tour. QOTD: The RCMP in my hometown work very hard, and fortunately I've never had a good or bad experience.

  • KAHUNA

QOTD: I was lifeguarding in Wildwood NJ, Mariners Landing at the waterpark-ok once I found out about how much shit the beach lifeguards had to actually do I walked right to the Waterpark-LOL – Anyway being one of the few of age, I used to have all the parties at my apartment- So the parties always got broken up by the cops but this party had gotten out of hand so they busted the party and brought the paddy wagons if you will and took us all into the station- Being it was my apartment I was the last leave and the officer was a mountain of a dude- friggin dwarfed me and I was 6ft about 230lbs at the time-So he grabs thelast keg with beer in it still from the cooler bucket to take it downstairs -looks at me and goes What the F am I caryying this for- you take it- So I grab it from him and it was practically full which I didnt know and it dropped like a stone into the big bucket filled with ice water and it covered this guy- soaked him and his shoes everything-

Thank god his partner came up the stairs just as it happened and started laughing his ass off- Cause that big dude would have killed me! Turns out he was a really cool guy we ended up drinking together at Woody's – he still arrested me about 5 more times that summer but it was all good – Luckily never got charged with giving alcohol to minors as my manager was Bill Morey's nephew and Bill owns basically everything in Wildwood- His nephew was underage and I always made sure he was at every party it was like a get out of jail free card.

  • P.I.M.P. nastay.
i have NEVER had a problem with the NYPD
    and quite the contrary
especially at 9/11 and i'm not shining anyone's shoes, as anyone in manhattan on that day recalls vividly
i cannot say enough and have tears in my eyes.
that being said, i've had a cop *suggest* i try heroin when confronted with my highstrung self
and had s*#t happen to my two brothers that would blow your mind
but as a tiny black chick in the city,
nothing but respect, real help and total faith in the cops in my personal experience.
