90/100

line of the day – ‘If you’re a bandwagon fan that’s the worst of all – makes me want to vomit all over myself’

This show was a bit slow to warm up, but came on strong in the second half when the sports chat came to the fore. Good stuff

QOTD (worst): Buying back our license plate from a cop in Mexico (Juarez) for $40 – knowing if we didn't get it we'd be stuck in Mexico on a Friday night as it was nearly 5pm on a Friday… we were parked in an unmarked no parking zone.

QOTD (best): Having a cop who just pulled me over for speeding screw up with his fancy new laser speed gun with integrated ticket printer – and accidentally erase the stored speed and data before he could finish creating the ticket. He said 'screw it' and let me go…

  • Chris the Cop

    We share good taste!!!

  • waynoooo daaa winoooo

YEEEEEEAAAAAAAAH, THATS WHAT I WANNA KNOW !!!!!!!!

QOTD Best & Worst at the same time. When I was in Uni one of my friends was a Police Cadet and I got invited to some Cadet parties. These parties were insane with Booze and Dope – from what I remember we had too much fun. Then I though – hey, these are the police of tomorrow & I became very worried. By the way one of this group was dismissed for brutality charges!

  • castello

Was that one that Gary tasted with a different label? I think I loved it too.

  • M_Woolley

Would have been a perfect time for a wine and donuts show!

  • bobbytiger

    I'm not saying,
that in my youth, (am in my mid- 60's now),
that I didn't have my share of problems with the law. Probably more than most. But, it was my own stupid fault.
I have nothing……..nothing but a high opinion of law enforcement officers. Sure, there is the occasional “bad apple”, but on the whole, I have great respect for their service. (Old school, huh)?
Best of luck Chris, and cheers.

  • Most fun one was when I was TDY to Howard AFB Panama. A bunch of us were driving to the Pink Panther club and go pulled over by a Panamanian cop (his black and white was a VW beetle with a light bar and everything). He asked my to pay the ticket right there and I told him I had no money, he asked for my drivers license and I gave him my meal card from the chow hall. He said I had to come to his police station to get it back and took off. Never told me where the station was and never gave me a chance to follow. Oh well, the food at the chow hall was really good I hope he got to use the card (which was reported lost). The only ticket I ever got was the day after 9-11. Was really mad and should not have been driving.
Some times I miss those days?

QOTD: I was followed, pulled over, had guns drawn from two officers, handcuffed, thrown in the back of the squad car without anything said to me accept don't move. After sitting in the squad car watching my car get searched for 10 minutes I finally found out what was going on, I drove an old Acura at the time and my plates registered to a Porsche. Apparently, the guy who sold me the car a year prior had accidentally reversed the plates so my car appeared to be stolen, that being said I had been pulled over for minor violations prior that year and it never came up. It was surreal and terrible though thrilling. This is my bad experience though. My good experience would be when our alarm went off one night and the officers realizing that it was from the wind and storms blowing open the back door that my wife left unlocked accidentally still searched the back yard in the rain to give us peace of mind. That was going out of the way.

Gary, I was hoping for a shout out last week for my 3 year anniversary! I was disappointed for not getting it though not too much. I understand that the Vaynernation is rather large and you can't cover everything. Thanks for what you do. I enjoy it a lot!

  • I know why he didn't spit the wine out….. the bucket is filled with donuts. ; )

    Gary, this friday, it's Couch-Time!!!!!!!!!!!

On behalf of the nation: “Bring back, the Laid Back Friday Couch!”

QOTD — just a few tales, but all too long to tell here!

  • zjk

If all the cops were like this guy then all my experiences would have been more positive. This guy is awesome have him back!!!

  • alienrelic

    Good show.

QOTD: Worst – Being arrested for being drunk and disorderly at the American Legion Hall in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on New Years eve. Yes, I was guilty, but it was New Years eve and it was the American Legion…
QOTD: Best – Talking a York County South Carolina Sheriff's deputy into giving me my confiscated bong back. After he missed finding the bag of reefer hidden in the gear shift box……

wow … Gary drank some wine … maybe the Mayans are right.

Two days ago a rookie stopped me for speeding in our small town. He approached my vehicle with his and on his pistol, stood at the back door of my 4-door car, leaned in the window and asked why I was in a hurry, yadda, yadda… Being a 6 foot tall pretty girl who works as a VIPS volunteer (Volunteers In Police Service) I quickly recognized him and inquired about a recent VIPS project we'd worked on together. He handed my license back and told me to slow down…. Love those cautious, forgiving types!

  • Ellio

Chris, nice job… u the man.
I think he may be a Super Taster,

    QOTD
COPS are always right, all experiences are the truth,

  • zach84

Best experience (due to cops remark) was when I was moving to FL from NY. My wife and I were in the car together, and it was jam packed full of boxes, bags and misc items that we were moving to our new place. I had Just entered central FL and I was doing 80 in a 70 keeping up with traffic. I switched lanes back to the right lane (still doing 80) and I am passed by a women in the left lane (my estimate she was doing 85-90). Next thing I know I am being pulled over by not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 undercover cops!!!! Long story short, reason they pulled me over was obviously speed, but when I questioned them about the other people who passed me obviously going faster then me… Their response ” Well your from NY and we don't know you” I laughed so hard!!!! They ran my license and saw that I had a clean record, no tickets or warrants and let me go.

  • angelatcarlson

    QOTD: OK, bummer alert!
Well, it happened to me second-hand as my ex-husband was involved in accidentally shooting & killing his best friend. Apparently, unbeknownst to me, they had been mixing alcohol and firearms for a while (Doh!). His friend always carried a Desert Eagle 45 with a hollowpoint in the chamber and while they were messing around the safety came off and the gun fired. His (white) friend was wielding a chainsaw this time and as my ex liked to wear black fatigues, had tattooes and is Hispanic, it initially looked like “murder” to the Oakland PD.
My ex's friend died in his arms and he had to stay in a holding cell in the same bloody clothes for quite some time while they took care of paperwork. My Mom & I were able to bail him out a few days later and after getting statements from a lot of different people, we were able to get the charges dropped to “Involuntary Manslaughter”. (Why the DA thought it was necessary to press charges when the families involved didn't, I'll never understand)
It took an agonizing year to get through the court system with a public defender and the very last thing the judge said after giving him 5 years probation was “don't play with guns”.
(Yes, he just had to go there! Oy!)

Needless to say this totally charged my ex's demenor. He started playing a lot of “Doom”, watching “Hellraiser” movies and getting tattooes that were a lot darker. I sub-consciously started fearing for my safety, he eventually found someone else to share the dark with and I had to move on.

I definitely respect the job that officers do and are thankfully that they are there for the community. I just hope most people's experiences of our Justice System aren't as traumatic
    as mine.

At least now I have a lovely family and a husband that is a little more thoughtful.

  • thrawn1020

…whether they like it, or, not?

In all seriousness, the best experience I had was a cop pulling me over for not walking on a muddy grassy area in the rain, and the worst I leave to your imagination.

Time to get in there and like a bit.

  • lou p

Lots of cop interactions where they were just big Richard Craniums, BUT one time long ago and far away on the roof of the dixie hotel in the NYC a cop grabbed a youg kid who wanted to jump………………..

  • Nice job Hutt…….for a COP!

  • RANDINTHECITY

    GARY!!!!
    Chris!!!

QOTD: 1st..lemme say..My Father was on the job for over 30 years… Tactical Patrol Force in the 60's, Bomb Squad, Hostage Negotiating….and a few other trips until he “semi” retired as Detective 1st grade, Homocide… so enuff about the BEST.
Worst – I was 20, driving to Vegas from NY w/my friend Heidi in a porsche (must be the car) w/NY Plates…made us get out of car, cross the highway..said I was reaching for a weapon! LOL When I started to describe my rights..I was taken and held in a cell with one hand handcuffed above my head for 2 hours… It wasnt pretty..but worse for them, when I was finally let go..

    🙂

    Chris, be safe..
    xo

  • RANDINTHECITY

OH! I forgot..this happened in Texas!

  • Great show Chris and Gary, I am also a big fan of the Esporao…GO PATRIOTS!!

QOTD: Never had any issues with the police…I have been a good boy, even got my class A licence to carry about 4 years ago…firearms is a little hobby of mine other then wine.

  • CharlieTN

Worst and best in the same night:

Worst: Getting pulled over for speeding when I was street racing at age 16.
Best: Telling him I didn't know anything about the other car speeding behind me (my friends) and getting let off with a warning.

    Great show, great guest!

  • Phredd3

OK, Chris the Cop can root for the Yankees. Anybody with an accent like that is forgiven. Also, anybody who can effectively call GV a wimp on his own show can pretty much do anything he likes.

QOTD: I have no interesting cop stories.

  • QOTD: Best COP experience was being a Police Explorer as a young teenager. Doing ride alongs and working parades. Worst experience was during explorer training turning a corner to fast and getting lite up like a christmas tree by Sgt. Willard of the Auburn, WA S.W.A.T Team with a paintball gun. Damn that hurt. That was roughly 18 years ago.

  • Chris, you surely are a likeable character! Keep yourself safe!

QOTD: Well… I have none. I guess I've never encountered a cop personally in my life!

  • benkearney

QOTD: Best Cop experience – while I was in the car, my dad got pulled over for speeding not far from the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. The cop asked for license and registration. He turned to walk to his cruiser and saw my DoD sticker (Dad was driving my car). He stopped, came back to the windoe and asked if I was active duty military. I was. He said, “I don't give tickets to soldiers during a time of war, and I'm certainly not going to give one to a soldier's father. You have a good day!” He handed the license and registration back and walked away.

  • pbarr

QOTD: Best cop story…My roommates and I had a party with 400 people outside in the front yard, back yard, balcony, driveway. Police show up and I'm tagged to talk to them. They look at me then look at the 400 drunk people behind me … both of them just start shaking their head. They chuckle, tell me to turn down the music and turn and walk away. Two very cool cops.

  • notTheFalseD

Hey Chris, about 1.5 miles of my 6.5 mile run the other day took me through Yonkers. Any suggestions on where to go or where to avoid…? I did get a few stares from the some of the locals suggesting they suspected I was lost. I know, this is a politically incorrect question, and it's rather off topic to boot…

QOTD – Now I had a whole thing in here about how I don't like it when cops write tickets for the sake of writing tickets… but today is not Festivus, so I will hold off the airing of grievances. The NYC police in general do an excellent job (as do the Yonkers police, I'm sure), and most likely, I have yet to fully appreciate the extent of their service and commitment.

It's not quite Riesling season yet (for me), but I sure am looking forward to it!

  • Beeper

Always good to see a Vayniac on the show…definitely a likeable character.

QOTD: Walking out of a party in college one night and saw a bald head across the street, behind a car. Thought it was our friend, Dick, so my buddy yells, “Hey Dick”. The bald head steps out from behind the car and it's not our friend, Dick. It's a cop. He just yells back, “Watch who you're calling Dick!” Yes sir.

  • KVM1985

QOTD: My best cop experience was driving to and from an awards ceremony with two middle school aged young men who I was working with while helping lead a youth after school program. All young people in the program were from very under-served neighborhoods, but I got really excited because one of them really wants to go to school to be a policeman someday, and everytime we saw a cop drive by that evening he got all excited about being a policeman. It made me happy and excited for his future – he will be great!

  • Beeper

Ahh…that reminds me of another one. Got pulled over after driving through a drug bust stakeout, with 3 long-haired guys in my car. The cop frisked me and everything, made me tell him the names and birthdays (?) of all the guys in the car, and then apologized for pulling me over for not using my blinker, once he realized we weren't the guys they were waiting for.

  • Kayla28

QOTD: California law prohibits the use of hand held cell phones while driving, but i see cops on their cell phone all the time. I just hate that.

  • KOdyssey

Worst experience was largely due to my own doing but made worst by the police response. As a stupid 18 year old, doing 86 in a 60 zone through a yellow light… Pretty dumb, mea culpa and I deserved a whopping fine.

However the cops pull me over, “inform” me I was doing 95 and that I “ran the red light”. After noticing I am a weedy nerd that wants no trouble, eventually they tell me I am “lucky” they won't charge me for running the red…. seriously, the reality of what i was doing was serious enough. Why the need to exaggerate the charges?? Is it a “exerting power” thing?

Best experience was having a rather loud house party on a 10th floor apartment (drunk and doing the Hammertime lol!). The doorbell-phone rings, my friend answers… “Hello?”… “Hello this is the police”… *friend hangs up*… lmao she was so drunk she though they might think that nobody was home (despite her initial answer). Luckily we were let off with a noise warning and told to keep it down….

QOTD “Best” cop experience: I drove from Oklahoma City to St Louis and one day then from St Louis to central Wisconsin. A trek of ~1,000 miles and only see 3 cops cars on the way. I'm in Hartfod, WI on Wacker Ave, following the GPS voice prompts, triple checking, the address etc and I finally see what I think is my buddy's condo complex up in front of me. All of a sudden I hear a siren and see the flashing lights in my rearview.

    (My car has Oklahoma plates)
    Cop: Are you from Oklahoma?
    Me: Yep
Cop: Ooooh-K. License and registration please.
    (I hand them over)
Cop: This is from Alaska (my drivers license)
Me: Yep, I'm an Alaskan resident
    (Cop goes into brain lock)
Him: Uhh, so you're an Alaskan resident, driving a car registered in Oklahoma, visiting Wisconsin!?
Me: You got it. I'm in the Air Force.
(I hand military ID over to officer)
Cop: So, did you go to the Middle East?
Me: Yep, I was in Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. Been in for 18 years.
(We BS for 5 minutes about the military, flying on the E-3 AWACS, etc, etc)
Cop: Ok, I gotta call this one in and do some paperwork.
(He proceeds back to his cruiser and I see him on the radio and writing stuff for the next 15 minutes when he finally comes back)
Cop: Ok, Sir. You're good-to-go. I just issued you a warning citation. Watch the speed changes in Hartford please.
    (Cop sticks out hand)
Cop: Thanks for your service to our country!
    Me: You're welcome!
We shake hands and I drive off with my warning 😀

Two minutes later and I'm telling my bud about the incident face-to-face and he tells me there's a warehouse across the street from the park and the speed limit drops from 35 to 25 mph in front of the park. There's a shift change at the warehouse at 6pm so guys get off work and then come rippin' out of the parking lot to get home. He thinks that cop was trying to bust one of those guys speeding in front of the playground and got more than he bargained for when he pulled me over.

QOTD: My best story dealing with the police was in Germany at Octoberfest. Seven of my friends from the unit I was stationed with and I rented a van and drove down to Octoberfest for a few days. The plan was to meet back at the van at 11pm to gather our bags and walk to the hostel we were staying in for the night. We arrived at noon and could not get a seat at a table (to order a beer) until close to 4pm. From 4pm-10pm I managed to drink about 9 liters of beer in the tent before stumbling back to the Van to ensure I was there on time. When I arrived I realized I was too drunk and might pass out. So I wanted to ensure my friends did not miss me. I climbed on top of the rented van and passed out with an empty stein in each hand.

About 10:20pm a Politzi shook me awake and started to question me about the van, and asked for my passport. As I was reaching into my wallet and passing him my military ID I suddenly my stomach turned and decided it would no longer be holding the beer (and four pretzels). I vomited down but directly onto my ID card and hand…sending it splashing up and covering the the officer who had previously been grilling me about the van. I was let go with a warning to go directly to the hostel under the escort of my friends who had just arrived…the officer left covered in about 2.3 pretzels and 3 liters of beer and stomach acid.

  • boomy13

QOTD: How about the time when I got out of my car to go to the Police officers, when pulling me over in a parking lot, to apologize and explain my reckless driving due to my buddies having a heated argument in my truck. The catch was, we were 16 and there was a twenty-block of beer sitting in the bed of my truck that we just had someone buy for us. No ticket, every beer accounted for and consumed. Not proud, just lucky.

  • tflangan

Fun show, not great, just fun. Let's start doing more than two wines. You've got plenty in the store GV. Pick a couple more off the shelf each show and cut down on the BS.
QOTD: Best – all those times the Glen Ridge police have given me a break because we are on the ambulance squad.
Worst – Coming home from Washington, D.C., after arguing a case before the U.S. Supreme Court, only to find a speeding ticket from a DC traffic cam for going 47 in a 25. I bought a radar detector the next day! Cops I love – – their traffic cams I hate.

  • QOTD:

Best – My Dad is a retired NYC Police Officer, so I had a run in with the cops everyday!
Worst – Being pulled over late at night at 2am for picking up my friends from the bar. I knew when I left to go get them, I would be pulled over. I had this bad feeling.

  • lawrenceleichtman

Disappointed to hear your review of the 2007 Esporaro as I still have 3 bottle of the 06 and wanted more. I have no bad cop stories as I have too many friends who are cops in big and small towns. It's a tough job and deserves nothing but respect. In fact, I just beat a cop friend from Santa Fe on the range this last weekend. Put two clips in the center. Great guest, a real genuine guy.

  • Jay

GV what an awesome episode! You guys had nice rapport going. Loved the sports talk, especially with Mott chiming in. Chris was a fantastic guest. A great personality that can mix it up with you really makes for entertaining conversation.
Oh and I was totally one of those Jersey grade-school Giants fans in the late 80s. Hardly anyone in my class liked the Jets then either. =P

QOTD: Only bad experience was a traffic ticket back in high school where I got ticketed for something I didn't do. Cop said I rolled through a stop sign to make a right turn at an intersection. Thing is, the car in front of me was well in front of the line before he stopped to make the right turn. So I was already stopped properly at the actual stop sign, so after the car in front of me made the turn, I waited a second or two and then made the turn. But the cop (state trooper, specifically), who was in a line of cars coming the other way, must have assumed I just followed the car in front of me without stopping, so he flipped on the l&s and tore after me and I pulled right over scared to death wondering what I did. And I didn't argue I just took the ticket. So that sucked.
Ever since then, never had a bad experience with the law. In fact, most LEOs I know are pretty cool guys.

    Stay safe Chris!

  • Best experience: I work out at the Gym with most of the local police working out at 5:30am. Bunch of good, decent guys.

Worst experience: Was with one of these guys when I was 17. Tequilla was involved.
    Only I know. LOL
I was on the football team, so you have to give me a pass.
