90/100

line of the day – ‘If you’re a bandwagon fan that’s the worst of all – makes me want to vomit all over myself’

This show was a bit slow to warm up, but came on strong in the second half when the sports chat came to the fore. Good stuff

Sweet, what did the case involve? (I'm an amateur constitutional enthusiast)

  • adrums

Fun show of NY-SportsLibrary-TV today, with a cool guest.
QOTD: Best: I was doing 93 in a 70, and when the cop (inevitably) pulled me over and asked if I knew my speed I replied, “probably 93 or 94.” My honesty (and evident self-awareness?) impressed him such that I got a ticket for going only 5 over.

  • Don Simpson

Tough to follow-up Billy's guitar playing, but Chris held his own.

QOTD: I am by no means sexist, but I have had terrible experiences with female police officers. Also, never get an HOV violation in Virginia because it is EXPENSIVE. I did not intentionally break the rules and got stuck with a $200 fine. Annoying.

  • Great show. Chris the cop seems like a good guy for a cop. I was surprised to hear the comment about Riesling being a “girlie” wine. I order it all the time and never feel embarrassed.

  • DAveAll

…leading the witness… smile. nice guest, love cops as they really lay it on the line. I am so humble when they pull me over for speeding, I mean, it's their job, just like mine is to speed. smile.
$25 for Spatlese is about right, though you can do cheaper.
Middle finger is never cool. what? we in high school?
Cop story: I was at a red light, four lane. car next to me took off, and I took off. We sped up to 20 over the speed limit, then he pulled behind me and turned on his lights. it was four cops going to work. I pulled over, they took my license and said come to the station a block from the next exit. They left, my car would not start – dead battery. when i walked to the station – a car took out from the back with lights on – he was seeking me. I smiled the whole next hour. ticket yes, story, priceless.

  • KVM1985

Wow, that is good to know! I have been living in Virginia for the past year (luckily without a ticket) but I'm from Michigan (where I have never experienced an HOV lane). I'll make sure to be extra careful!

  • Breen3:16

Chris seems like a nice guy. but did that Ricky guy drop him on his head. His head looks swollen. Is that normal for a Yonkers cop. He kinda looks like Butthead from that old MTV show.

  • Marsh

    Gary,

Excited to see you responded to my comment yesterday.

I really enjoyed your guest. Genuine. I just read Hometown by Tracy Kidder and I bet Chris the the Cop is a great hometown cop. And he's obviously passionate about wine, thanks in large part apparently, to you.

QOTD: Have to say, I haven't had many good experiences with the law. Chris, if you don't mind what is your opinion of cops walking beats in neighborhoods, establishing more of a trust relationship with the community, letting them see you as a human being.

  • KnightWKNF

Great episode cool guest and I love the pounding of the Riesling straight out of the bottle lol.

QOTD: Driving down the Freeway in the right lane of a 3 lane Highway at probably 85 mph (in a 65, in WI) talking with my girlfriend at the time not paying attention to the road or my speed all of a sudden she screams COP! So I instantly slam on the brakes just as I did a big ol' semi truck came hauling past me in the middle lane and then another in the left lane. From underneath the semi I see the cop pull out into the emergency lane, flip on his lights, and take off down the freeway. Makes his way into traffic and just keeps going faster and then all of sudden his brake lights come on and his lights go off…. I'm guessing he clocked me and then couldnt find me lol. Maybe true maybe not, I may never know.

  • Bikecop

Chris was a great guest. Bring him back from time to time. It's good to see another cop who's into wine. (I'm retired after 29 years.)

  • thedreamweaver

My best/worst: while in college i was told a million times that i looked just like this cop that always busted minors in and around the college town. so for halloween i dressed “kinda” like and cop and did nothing other than walk around a few bars. cleared a couple rooms. he showed up at one and said he had actually heard a million times about a college kid around that looked just like him. then he told me to cut that sh** out before i get into a lot of trouble.

  • adambunnell

Best Larry Bird quote of all time came at the 1986 all star 3-point shooting contest when he walked into the locker room before they started and asked, “All right, who's playing for second place?”

  • Great show! Chris The Cop is a very entertaining guest.

QTOD 1: Best Police Experience – Was pulled over by a Police officer for speeding on a local town street. The police officer notices that the car is full – wife, kids, mother-in-law, and everyone is agitated and giving me a hard time and asking me what did I do, how fast was I going, why aren't you more careful, etc. He must have felt sorry for me given the inquisition I was going through with wife and mother-in-law that he let me go with just a warning!

    QOTD 2: Worst Police Experience – I can't remember any…

  • (Andy): I really liked the title to this one, “Who called the cops?” Great guest and a solid episode even though the wines didn't really kill. I love Riesling, but you're right that it's pretty embarasing to order at a restaurant so I mainly only have them in the privacy of our home. Sav Blancs seem a little more “manly” for some reason.

  • dsallen

Fun show! It's funny to hear sports talk with a little wine thrown in.

QOTD: I had 4 cruisers converge on me and my girlfriend sitting in my car at a shopping center after hours. We specifically chose the most well-lit spot in the lot to finish our drinks from Sonic so no one would get suspicious. Some store owners noticed our car had been parked there idling for a while (it was cold outside) and the next thing we know, one of Allen's finest is at my window asking if I'm on the “most wanted” list. Hah! I've never felt safer.

  • Dewey

good show gary love the sports talk!

QOTD: Haven't had too many run in's with cops, thought about being one for a little bit, love what they do, Chris thank you and your buddies for putting your life on the line to keep us safe

  • Pat__B

    Hey Chris,

Thanks for serving your community and putting yourself out there to keep things safe. We all appreciate it. Go Yanks!

  • zrm

    Nice one Gary!

QOD: Cops Busting up parties are always a huge huge bummer. Especially when you're younger and they are no where near as bad as they could be. Being in a college town led to some really paranoid cops just looking for college kids to prey on (they had units just for friday and saturday nights to drive around town and bust up parties)

    -ZRM

  • Chris: You rock…stay safe. Awesome rapport going on…going to have toss in my vote for another visit for '08 Esporao.

QOTD: Best experience happened last December, when I was the victim of a drunken assault by a random young drunk twice my size. Cops were on the scene MEGA-quickly, and thanks to some good Samaritans who gave a physical description and the direction he fled, the officers caught him in minutes. I just had nasal (and dental) correction surgery, since the break I had made my breathing way worse, BTW.

Worst experience for me was the typical young driving pullover experience except that I was talking to my sister in Spanish, when he walked up to the car, and I heard him make a racist comment under his breath.

  • johnboston

This episode is my fave out of all I've see in the year I've been watching. No, ALMOST, got to rescind that b/c of the red sox comment… but this show was great. CtheC has an awesome personality and you guys complimented each other nicely. BTW Mozilla was messing up with the discuss platform and I couldn't comment on there

  • Great show. Great guest.

    QoTD
Best: Cop in Paris took my “cigarette,” took a puff, and gave it back. Crazy.
Worst: Shot by a rubber bullet at the recent UC Berkeley student protests. Crazy.

  • Sean

My worst experience but funny was peein in public at Monterey State University, and I got a $480 ticket!!!

Seems the vibe at WLTV is straying more from wine and related topics to just plain whatever the BS-of-the-day happens to be, with a couple brief, personal tasting observations thrown in. I get that this site is geared more to the younger, new-to-wine crowd, and that's cool, but it's just starting to seem a little “more-of-the-same” boring to me. And yes, I KNOW I'm very much in the minority, and that's cool, too. But the constant sports talk (a little every once in a while is OK) sounds exactly like my local radio 'sports talk', where they talk (and argue) about sports all day long. Is this Wine Library TV, or Sports Library TV (?), or, as seems to be more and more the case, a combo of the two? No disrespect, but who has the time (or desire) to read 200 personal “cop stories” or “I play such-and-such kind of guitar stories?”Both guests are great people, but that is NOT why I visit this site. Sorry… I guess I'm old and jaded, but I'm here for the wine talk/info, and I find myself becoming distracted and fast-forwarding more and more often. I will now yield the floor so you can all insult me….

I am curious what Gary thinks about the scent kits to help teach scents? I bring this up because he brought up the difficulty most people have identifying what they are smelling.

QOTD: When I was in college I worked the overnight shift at the only all night gas station in this tiny town. The town was so small and uneventful that the chief of police usually patrolled the night shift and he usually wore sweatpants and a ball cap. I was accustomed to him coming into the station throughout the night to bs and get a coffee or water refill. Sometimes when he was being goofy he would put his ballcap on backwards. One night I was talking with another student about a class we were both in. We had been talking for about an hour. I was behind the counter and he was in front of the counter. In comes the chief of police with his sweats on and ballcap backwards and he very calmly says “put your hands on the counter slowly…” He looked at me and said “are you alright?” I said “sure, business must be slow you usually aren't in for another hour…” At that point he said a little louder “I said put your hands on the counter” I saw my friend turn ghost white, I looked over the counter and saw he had a shotgun pointed right at my friend. So I said “Ya know, Bill, if you wanted to rob the place you could have just asked, I would have given you the money” (because I thought it was all a joke) At that point he screamed “I SAID PUT YOUR M…F… HANDS ON THE COUNTER NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” my friend already had his hands on the counter so I quickly put my hands on the counter and started to think “OMG I really am getting robbed by the chief of police!!!” Again he looked at me and said “are you ok?” I said “yeah………are you?” He said “Is there anyone else in the store?” I said “no” and then I KNEW that I was getting robbed and probably killed by the chief of police… At that point about 30 police officers flooded into the store and searched every inch of the store while my friend and I held our hands on the counter scared to death… Once they realized that the store was empty except for us they handcuffed my friend and explained that they had gotten an anonymous tip that I was being robbed at gun point. I said “No, we were just talking…” He searched my friend and finding no weapon un cuffed him. I then found out that the 4 closest counties sent all of their city and county police to my station to save my life… They all knew me and when the word came out that I was being robbed everyone came flying. They all had parked on the street behind the store so I never saw all of the cars until they were in the store. It was both the best and worst experience all in one. It was great to know how protected I would have been if I had been being robbed… but it was one of the scariest experiences in my life.

  • MarcBelgium

First of all. Is this a wine or a football show with a little sip of wine?
I understand you love football, I don't love football. But I really love wine and that's why I watch the show.
    Cool guest.

QOTD. My best experience was last summer while on vacation in California. The police stopped me for speeding. I drove 99 where the maximum was 70. He told me that I had to be careful and that this was my lucky day because he had no time to give me a (I don't know the word). Lol.

Gary great show! Love Rieslings.. One question; Is the hony aroma in Riesling Spatlese from botrytis infected grape or something else?

QOTD: Here in Croatia, you can always get out of trouble with the police, except when you're drunk, which is great in my opinion .. dont drink (much) and drive ..

  • The kind made with white wine grapes. I know that Italy, Slovenia and Croatia produce a good number of them. Maybe that’ll be my spring wine project!

  • seb10

    Dear Gary,

This is unbelievable, you picked the two wines that I have been drinking for years as my everyday red and white (I drink the Auslese (dry) more). When I am finished working I will love seeing this show.
    Lots of love
    Seb

  • That we do! That we do.

  • Richie

QOTD: Best was wenn I was walking home from a party in Berlin and a couple of cops picked me up and drove me home because they said they were bored and wanted to save me the 20 miles walking. That was awsome. Worst was wenn they stoped me on my bike because it was not “fit for traffic” and forced me to leave it there for some reason. Next day I went back to get it and it was obviously gone.

  • Anonymous

Why not.. Makes for a good story….

  • Junon

Sorry. Tuned out half way through the sports talk.

Last episode was weak as well.

    Less guests and more wine.

  • winestein

great guest. personally i think you should have more of them. im gonna just jump on the QOTD cause i was kind of a punk kid. all im gonna say about the bad experience is cops are really hard on people that have marijuana on them, lighten up guys. i have had some great experiences too though. just yesterday i was biking home and was going through an intersection on my bike, some jerk in a car almost ran me over and a cop was on him like a cheap suit. another time i was really drunk walking home from the bar and a cop actually gave me a ride instead of giving me a public intox. when i was about 17 my mom and i were driving to a job and the fuses were blown in her car. neither of us knew anything about any of that and he helped us fix it. love you good cops out there but you crum bums that like to bust kids riding skateboards and not really causeing problems need to chill, no need for the power trip. such a good guest i diddnt even put too much thought into the wine. loved the sports talk too…just good, good show
