90/100

line of the day – ‘If you’re a bandwagon fan that’s the worst of all – makes me want to vomit all over myself’

This show was a bit slow to warm up, but came on strong in the second half when the sports chat came to the fore. Good stuff

QOTD: Got busted the other day (here in Oz) using my mobile while driving. That's fair. But then the cop found out my residential address is different to what it says on my license and apparently that's a crime too?? Big fines coming my way…. 🙁

  • Good guest, interesting fellow. He does look like a police officer should and that's a great thing, trustworthy face and broad shoulders, seems like the kind of guy who would protect you should the need arise. As for the wines it would seem they were both inconsequential as the sports talk was quite juicy and more interesting than both of them although to be fair, I believe the Esporão is a good wine but the 07 vintage i have yet to taste (I like the Tourigas from Herdade Do Esporão).

QOTD: let's say I've been disappointed and surprised by police: good cops are great, bad cops are a nightmare.

  • Chris The Cop

QOTD: Best cop experience is when I called them for underage drinking party next to my apartment after the weekend before they puked in the stair well and didn't clean it up. Turns out there were drugs involved and at 2-3 am it was great seeing the parents try to argue with the police that it wasn't there kid that was doing anything wrong.

  • Chris The Cop

    thanks!!!!!

  • On vacation so need to catch up with my friends tonight with the last two shows. Can we have a tasting of two wines you announce ahead of schedule in the next two days so we can all participate with you by the pool?

    Cheers from the K-Mons!

QOTD: Both took place on a trip my church youth group took, by road, from Ohio to California in 2002. On the way out, a tire on the bus blew out. As we were siting around midnight on the side of the road in Illinois, a state police in an unmarked sleek black mustang pulled over to help. He radioed the county sheriff who sent two deputies in the county paddywagon to take us to a Hardees that was open 24 hours. They must have made at least 6 trips to get us all there while the bus will be fixed, and I will never forget their help and kindness.

Once we got to Cali, a bunch of us had been throwing water balloons, including using one of those giant sling shot water balloon launchers. This was all on the property of the church we were staying at, although a few may have landed in an alley between the church and a gas station. A few hours later, FOUR Huntington Beach police cruisers show up, the offers get out, gather us all (50+ people) in a room and tell us that they had EIGHT calls complaining of us using the launcher (we did not aim at nor hit anybody or anything). They then informed us that using those is apparently a FELONY in California, and they could arrest us all right then and there. But being from out of state and not knowing California's ridiculous laws, they would let us go with a warning but told us that if they got ONE more report they would come back and arrest us. Needless to say we were angels the rest of the trip, we had no idea!

QOTD: Got stopped for making a right turn on red. There wasn't a sign posted. Went to court and had to pay $463 bones to plead zero points. Had photos, but wouldn't hear my case unless I made a second appearance, which being I work nights would have lost yet another day's salary. I received the ticket Feb. 2. They erected a sign on May 5th, 3 months later. Wrote a letter to Mayor, knowing that wouldn't change anything, but might make me feel better. It didn't.

  • Jay

skin-tight Phil Simms jersey and an afro wig?

  • Chris The Cop

Thats a bored cop with nothing better to do.

  • Bruce S.

So as not to offend your guest, I swear I've not yet watched today's episode. But I am writing to second the opinions of those who are in favor of more wine info and fewer guests. If I remember right, you're the guy who promised us “fewer guests” this year. That doesn't seem to be the case so far. None of this is aimed at the nice folks who visit you. Most of them are OK folks, but when you're sharing your attention between the guests and the wine, the wine content suffers. Watching you try to cover for a guest who clearly knew little about the vine was painful to watch. QOTD for you GV, are you our go to wine expert, or are you an entertainer? I'm here to learn wine.

  • Chris The Cop

Hey Oscar I agree with you. You forgot handsome also!!!!

  • TommyB

QOTD: The cops in the UK have always been pretty good to me generally, not to my friend though (who's black). A racist cop searched him and then punched him in the face when he was just walking back from a nightclub minding his own business; not good. Racism in the UK can be a big issue and it does spill into the world of law enforcement unfortunately. I trained to be in the police force 10 years ago but decided to leave; it wasn't for me.

  • Chris The Cop

    A summons????? 99 thats flying!!!!

  • Chris The Cop

Sometimes a pee when you've been drinking maybe worth $480 bucks…..lol

  • ChrisV

Yeah I dunno…. he was in an unmarked car which is why I got busted, so not sure if he was roaming the streets looking for traffic offences or what. If it was me writing the tickets, I'd have given me one for the mobile use, but just given me a warning for the license thing as I clearly didn't know the law and wasn't trying to deceive him about where I could be tracked down, since I volunteered the information that I was living elsewhere. I'm actually a bit uncomfortable with the idea that I'm obliged to tell the government where I'm living at all times. I'm not a criminal so why should my movements be tracked by the govt?

That's life in Australia I guess, where we don't have a Bill of Rights or many rights enshrined in the Constitution… for instance I heard today that police in the state of Victoria have been given the power to randomly search members of the public for knives, in the same way that people are given random breath tests while driving. No Fourth Amendment for us.

  • Chris The Cop

John, i take back my previous thoughts and comments about boston people….you're ok!

  • Chris The Cop

where do you think cops get there beer from, college parties!!!!!!!

  • Chris The Cop

    Thanks Pat!!!

  • Chris The Cop

A ticket is nothing compared to the wrath of a woman!!!!!

  • Chris The Cop

I agree Bike, alot of people are digging the Cop show. Enjoy your retirement.

  • pawncop

Interesting guest, good episode and will try the Spatlese Riesling if I can find it.

QOTD – I have lots of good cop stories, course I have an advantage, and my perspective is a little different from the majority of of crowd here. Stay safe up there my brother. You and I know just how bad it is getting on the streets. Here in rural Texas it is getting worse, although it is nothing like what you face.

  • Anonymous

It’s hard. I’m gonna try to spit this weekend at the barrel tastings. Usually after 2 or three wineries I get to stumblin.

  • aeggert

Great show, and great guest. Its good to see that hard working lawmen getting a little love when people tend to be so down on them all the time.

QOTD: My best and worst cop experience is actually one story. I live in Maine, and I was borrowing my college buddy's WRX one day as I had used it to learn to drive a standard. I got nabbed in a speed trap. The cop, who was obviously a little tired and angry from having to work this speed trap, took a look at my Maine license and the Connecticut registration and immediately accused me of stealing the car. I managed to explain my way out of that, but when he gave me the ticket he didn't return the insurance card!
Needless to say, I contested the ticket. I got to court (where my dad happens to be a judge, though not on duty for traffic court that day) and another cop who was there for another trial found out who I was. He called me over to chat with him, and after mocking me for my clothing, informed me that the cop who pulled me over was on night shift the night before and probably wouldn't make it into court. He was right, and I had the case dismissed which was great since it saved me $185 for the ticket and a jacked up insurance premium the next year.

  • Petey Pablo

Chris I have a couple of cousins on the YO force. My last name is Donaghy.

Great to see a local guy (esp a cop) from my home town on the show. If you have any local tasting coming up and need and extra, Let me know.

  • Waits

    Thnx man! I’m a killer ; )

Enjoyed you on the show, and great to see some comment-action from the guest. That’s what all guests should be doin’… Cheers!

  • Jay

Gary should do two shows. One where he nerds it up and wears a top-hat and tastes wine with a monocle that pops off his eye when the wine is amazing.
The other would be on the laid-back Friday couch where he BSes about sports and has cool guests like Chris the Cop.

  • nitaT

    POOOOlice.. cool guy!!!
QOTD: I have very few experiences with the police …. boring.. sorry.

  • Thursday

    Great episode… Chris was sick…
Often I feel that the guests distract from the focus of the show, but this time he made it… great banter!
I'd love to watch a show with this guy hanging out with his buddies getting blasted…. “It's Always Sunny in Yonkers” perhaps!

QOTD: “kids say the darnedest things”
While in college about ten of us piled into a small sedan to get home from the bars. The “designated driver” got pulled over… after the usual formalities were dispensed, the officer asked my friend, who's face was smeared against the rear door's window,”How much have you had to drink tonight?” In his drunkenness he replied “Not enough to drive officer.” The cop was the first one to laugh… we all got home safely… without tickets.

  • kasperhip

Nice show. Good to see another hardcore vayniac on the show. If there's gonna be guests though, then

I HAVE AN IDEA! HOW ABOUT HAVING ACTUAL WINE PEOPLE ON THE SHOW?

Someone who made or knows a lot about wine?

That would be fucking awesome….just saw the Jancis Robinson and Randall Grahm episodes again. OOOhhhh that was the days!

  • Michael C in MKE

QOTD: Best cop story. I was at Lakefront Park in the middle of night, like 3am, way after hours for being in the city. My girlfriend and I were making out when these kids showed up and started fire dancing right in front of us. It was so random and so beautiful. This cop car suddenly pulls up and this fire dancing girl just goes right up to them and tells them what they're doing. They chat for a minute then they leave. Letting the dancers continue.

Worst cop story: Some guy tried to mug me and I fought the dude for his gun, turned out to be a pellet gun, but I won. The cops were called and I had to wait in the back seat of a squad car for hours. My adrenaline was super amped and I couldn't get a drink of water while we waited for some detectives to show up. I was a little banged up from the fight, and Detectives wanted me to agree to an ambulance. I refused and they said they could call one and I wouldn't be billed. So I agreed. I was billed $85.00 for a band aid. Which was way more than the money I had on me. I'm certain those detectives lied to me to cover their own asses.

  • kasperhip

Don't rest on your laurels, Gary….it's becoming tedious!

  • Whatya mean bro?

  • scottEJ

Wow. I could have pegged Chris as a cop a mile away just from his voice and manner of speaking. Looks like I'll be skipping this '07 and enjoy the '06s I have.

QOTD: While, I appreciate the people in uniform and what they do, I've have a few instances with some rogue cops that have left a bad taste in my mouth.

  • Jay

Looks like he vented two posts further down the page.

  • Tom

Chris is awesome. One of my favorite guests of all time.

QOTD: don't have any great experiences with cops (but not many bad ones either). I've been pulled over 3 times and got 3 tickets, so I guess I'm bummed that I've never gotten off with a warning (whereas my brother doesn't have a ticket but has been pulled over a dozen times).

  • medokoala

Lurker from Croatia, Europe comming out! Worst cop expirience: Friend and me 'bout 1988, 2 AM going home from usual “everything but responsible” wine drinkin' party, finding some used car tyres, kicking and rolling them down the street until two cops came out and beat the living daylight's out of us just for being young, ripped clothes, restless punks. Hehehe. Nice memories!
Best cop xp: not sure I got one. Somehow I think they are never there when they should be and much often are there when there is no need for it. All around the world there is too much negative selection thing going on when “advertising for” and recruiting new cop personnel. Don't get me wrong, I think it is a honourable profession, but it's been here, basicly unchanged, for so long I think it's time to try some new arrangement of oraganized social living and law reinforcement.
Anyway great show, I'm looking forward to see more guests from music, art, literature, philosophy, etc… profession / background. Wine making & drinking has always been strongly connected with these humantic enterprises. You haven't had a guest like Maynard James Keenan for a long time. Stay cool. Peace!

  • winemonologues

Chris was outstanding. Talks like a cop. Has the mannerisms of a cop. Knows his wine too! Nice job!

QOTD: Best experience is, a warning on a traffic stop, of course! Worst, was a cop who charged a friend of mine with drunk driving. Took it all the way to trial and turns out the cop blew it and fabricated most of the facts as a basis for the charge.

  • missatiejacket

I disagree with the tone of his rant (2 comments down) but I agree with the sentiment. I didn't dislike this guest for any reason, I just see no reason to have him on the show. I love when you have guests who are actually in the wine business and can bring some knowledge and interesting wine related stories to the table. I understand that you're in to sports, but this was more of a sports show than a wine show, and that bores the crap out of me.

Sorry, Chris, nothing against you. If I could be on the show I would do it, too.

  • Marc

    Question of the day answer:
For getting pulled over for DWB. Literally, the officer said it then let me on my way.

  • MarcBelgium

    Hahaha, that's right.
But I give you the whole story.
The cop stopped me in real Western Style.
He turned over, making a huge U-turn and crossed the in between the two directions of the highway. As I saw him doing that i thought 'waw, they not only do that in the movies'.
I stopped – I'm not stupid you know – and opened the window.
'Good morning Sir' he began with. I responded very politely 'good morning Sir'.
'Do you know what the speedlimiet is?
    'Yes, I do, 70'
'Do you know haw fast you were driving?'
(This question was a little more difficult)
    'eeeuuuggghhhhh, 78?' I tried.
Then, three seconds silence and then he shouted '99 Sir, that's 30 over the limiet'
I looked at him with a dog face (here in Belgium it means looking like if you were hit and with lots of guilt)
And then he told me what you already know.

Now serious. Cops in America are very nice guys compared to the cops in Belgium. You guys are polite and correct. (this has nothing to do with the previous story) Here in Belgium most of them are rude.

A big salute to you all.
Let's drink a glass of wine on that.

    Best regards.

  • missatiejacket

qotd: I could answer this another way, but I have a funny story that satisfies both best and worst. In upstate NY I was pulled over and harassed by 2 cops. They saw/smelled nothing and had no probable cause, but searched my car (illegally) anyway. They found 2 small ziplock baggies, one containing frankincense and one containing sage. The cop searching the car said that the frankincense was crack and the sage was weed. The other cop was standing with me away from the vehicle. They did some celebrating and some “ooooh, we've got you now, you're totally screwed!” type stuff. They were sure they'd come up with something beyond that and were trying to intimidate me into giving up the “secret stash”. I told them repeatedly what the bags actually contained and they kept saying I was stupid to lie. After about the fifth time of me looking the one cop right in the eye and asking what I would have to gain at that point by lying to him, he asked the other cop in a much more serious tone if he was sure there were drugs in those bags. The other cop looked at them much more closely for a couple of minutes and then said much more quietly in a very defeated tone (big change from before) something along the lines of “no, they're not.” We got back in the car and drove away. idiots.

  • jtuck

i have an unfortunately heavy right foot. so much so that i fear my license will be taken away when i head to court (to fight yet another speeding ticket) in april! i have tried everything. fake crying, unbuttoning a top button or two, to no avail.

thankfully, for my 24th birthday, which was this past saturday, a dear friend has serious ins with the boston police force and he gave me the best bday present of all time…a legit police sticker serial numbered to a top dog on the highway patrol squad. with hope, i will not have another police encounter for awhile, but im sure it will be an interesting one if i do!

  • My worst experience with the poilice would be when I was falsely accused of stealing, when in fact I was in the wrong place/wrong time. This has left a mild distrust in law enforcement.
