line of the day – ‘I’m not underestimating them at all – that’s like saying don’t underestimate bald-headed guys’

This episode was passing me by but the line of the day made me laugh out loud and from that point I got into it

  • what do people get out of being first to post here?

  • Nothing really. A flexing of the e-peen, a show of the depth of boredom as well as perhaps lack of life. But, that’s just me.

  • oooh “flexing of the e-pen” me likey, gonna have to borrow that one in the future.

By leaving the design to the individual producers. Wine has become more and more homogeneous with the modern juice buying/mass producing system. There are benefits: price and consistency. These type of wines tend to aim at a market that is the lowest common denominator. They strive to produce something that will be liked by the largest amount of people…or more precisely, to offend the least amount. This type of pandering is the reason Budweiser owns 50% of the beer market.

Does it really matter if a wine is made by growers or buyers? The important part is that it’s quality.

I totally think these guys are jumping on the band wagon, but maybe you should hold your judgements until after you’ve tried the wine.

    first!

    Joel Gott makes good juice!!!

I really enjoy this episode. I won’t disagree that they come off as marketers. I did however think that GV did a bang up job talking about the context of Malbec and emphasizing the glut of opportunists that are flooding the market. I thought the “so called suits” were squirming a little bit, and I hope that there are more episodes like this.

Gary interrupt … ha ha ha ha ha ha … let me catch my breathe … ha ha ha ha ha ha …

  • How cool is that!

  • NY Pete

    gotta love Gary's honesty.

  • elron

Had the Joel Gott “The Show” Cabernet. The 1st time it was meh and the 2nd time it was a lot better. From what I remember, it was a big smokiness and sweetness to it.

  • Lb_in_KS

It's “the view”!? WLTV style… bah, ha, ha, ha

  • leni

I love this episode. Every Malbec i've had has been good, and a few i've really loved. I really hope what Gary warns of doesn't come true because it's my go to wine. As a newbie wino I at least know if I buy Malbecs for a party, everyone will be happy. It would be a shame if it gets ruined by business.

  • elron

Don't remember the vintage of the Joel Gott “The Show” Cabernet I had. It could have been the 2005. Anyway, the first time I had it I thought it was meh. The second time I had it was a lot better. I would buy it again. From what I remember, it had a real big smokiness and some sweetness to it.

  • billemmerich

GREAT show – I love to hear the business talk and hear about the mechanics of the wine biz. A real treat. Thanks

  • foozed

I used to buy Joel Gott Zinfandel when it was just his label – and it was great stuff!
Tried the three thieves in the purple jug when it came out purely because if Gott's rep – not bad for 11 bucks but not the same caliber as the Joel Gott bottles..
I tried The Show last year.. ehh.. not a fan – but to each's own!

  • benkearney

Ouch, you can just see the “oh, crap” come across the fact of these guys as you beat up on their brand. Luckily you pull it out in the end. I'm looking forward to part 2.

  • drt999

I for one enjoy looking into the business side when it's done well. This was. Looking forward to part 2

    cool! 😀

  • mattgmann

lmao@ “the douchebag version of you three”

I'm not sure that it's a different version of those guys. Honestly…l could care a lot less for this type of wine branding/marketing. It's the part of the industry I hate. I'd much rather see an interview with someone with a vineyard trying to make the best whine with what they have. Not some assclowns trying to cash in on trends and giving no respect to real producers.

I think I'll take day off tommorrow….no need to watch part 2

  • Wow. Extremely interesting dialogue. I wish I could get my girlfriend to vouch for me here, but I have been saying Malbec might be in trouble for a while now. It's not there yet, there is still definitely a LOT of upside to go, but you can just see it looming on the horizon that the end is near. Very interesting to hear you say your comments and relate it to Australian wine… I have a feeling Malbec is SO hot and SO trendy right now, the bubble is going to burst reeeeeal soon.

  • I'm ready for part two now…

When GV talks shop, watch out! This show rocked.

  • I can't wait till part 2!!!! You are such a tease GV!!!!

I love Malbec but started drinking it a long time ago!!!

  • With that said, these guys are obviously very sharp business men, love hearing their approach to the wine industry, but after reading the article in the NY Times a bit ago (Napa Learns To Sell) I have a feeling that wines lacking the human element and desire to produce the best possible product, ones that are just made to turn a quick buck, are going to suffer. It's the same reason I could not agree more with Gary's tweet today about “nice people”. There is soooo much transparancy in the industry now, anyone can find out any information, and wines that people know are sub-standard are going to suffer (again, not saying that these guys are doing that, I think they do a good job, and love Gary's final comment about their future $50 wine for $9, couldn't agree more). Phew, just finished a glass of wine, maybe that's why I went on this mini-rant haha.

  • castello

    top thirty?

  • slave2thevine

Seriously…would liked this not to have been a two part show.

  • slave2thevine

I agree…I think we are going to see a glut of fruit from Argentina…and you will see people planting too much Malbec there like they did in Oregon with Pinot Noir.

  • laurieinvt

It's always fascinating to hear the business end of the wine industry. Another way to gain perspective. After all the talk, it'll be equally interesting to see how the wine does!

  • CharlieTN

I think that stuff is already happening to Malbec. There will still be a lot of upside for some time, but I'm seeing more and more gimmicky, overextracted malbecs every time I look around.

  • Really enjoyed the episode! All the talk was interesting.
Small request: could we come up with a new word to replace “db”?

  • laurieinvt

Love it or hate it, without wine branding/marketing, how exactly would wines end up in our wine shops? Not all of us live in temperate wine-producing areas where we can just jot over to the neighborhood winery to visit with the vintner and pick up a bottle….

  • NY Pete

    slacker

  • laurieinvt

    agreed!

  • Kayla28

I am late again…I want to be numero 1…lol

  • castello

There may be an upside, which should be, that more folks get into wine that is cheap and delicious. Maybe even help keep cult wine prices resonable.

  • Well, nice discussion, but will it help the wine world? Some wine will bomb other bomb :). Everyone have to do there own mistakes. The big problem is that people that don't love wine try to make a buck. And we that drink wine chase a great deal instead of chasing a great wine. To find that great wine we have to taste, taste and, yes taste. My question is, does the cost really matter when we find that great wine?

  • tarany

i loved this conversation, gary. fascinating. looking forward to part 2.
