line of the day – ‘I’m not underestimating them at all – that’s like saying don’t underestimate bald-headed guys’

This episode was passing me by but the line of the day made me laugh out loud and from that point I got into it

He called you on interrupting!!! Finally someone who called you out Gary. Good for him.
    I like the shop talk.

  • Dominic C.

I think these guys are actually very smart in how they're playing the wine market. The condition of the market really does play to their advantage especially in the areas that are hurt by bad products.

  • mattw433

Really enjoyed the discussion about innovating with both the product and the marketing.

  • Whoa. Part II.

    Now!

  • I Loved the Wine Business talk. So refreshing to see Gary V sharing knowledge from years of experience rather than the usual snap judgement of flavors he gets from a moment's tasting of a wine. I WANT more shows like this where he can share his views on where the wine business world is going.
TIP: I would LOVE to see a show where a top grower, a top wine maker, and a top wine businessman (all ppl who haven't met before, from different places) go head-to-head and share their views on wine business.
Oh, and if you haven't seen it, here is his full keynote video(s) from wine Future in Rioja last November: http://www.vinustv.es/category/video/wine-future/

  • Jay

Yes Gary, he totally did make my year by calling you out on the interruption! 😀

  • I totally agree with!!!

  • CAChristie

I definitely don't disapprove of Gary being overbearing. What he has to say is always interesting, and it's just part of his personality that makes the show what it is. Seeing someone take him down a peg was super funny though!

  • At the Waldorf today? Next time come say hello. I'm there every day!

  • Thank God this will be a two part episode, because I was getting pretty pissed off with all of the interruptions, etc. Can we taste the wine in part 2? These guys seem like decent guys who should get at least a shot at a wine review. It was an interesting episode, but as the one guy said, “you interrupted me.” I know you may love that, but wft. Lets taste some damn wine.

  • I will buy their wine. Thanks for hanging in there guys. And best of luck with your business. You won't need it.

Gary, when interviews are on, you must zip it. Zip it good.

  • FYI. Great show!!!

  • Nice to hear the industry talk from the indie makers. We enjoyed the 3Ts when it first appeared. Great way to help folks here what negociants are, and how they help us get great wine.

  • gman802

As an Argetine, I always love the Malbec/Argentina talk. I also like the wine business banter.
Gary, by the way, read the book. Good stuff. Plan on crushing it. Thanks.

  • Oh, I was looking for my favorite WLTV posts.

And my vote for best poster goes to:

bobbytiger: “taste the wine for Heaven's sake, taste the wine!”

  • Very interesting chat… Hope the wine is great.

Many of us like to hear about the wine business. Poll the comments. Very popular.

  • Oh, and that Malbec is already arriving. Can they just start seriously blending all of this good stuff for the masses? There has got to be marketing hook that people will bite on.
I like the idea of fun, quality, delicious jugs, especially with the domestic glut…retro, and budget friendly…perfect for summer picnics and bbqs. This is how we broaden the wine consumer base here in the US.

  • Anonymous

They aren’t suits. They are young wine making entrepreneurs doing their thing.

  • I wish there were more grapes for sale here in the northeast…
High quality, affordable frozen must anyone?

Can we get on the mailing list for futures of that $50 wine for $9?

  • Anonymous

You’ll always be number one in Allans book 😉

  • Michael C in MKE

I really appreciate this episode. While many people may prefer just to learn about wine. I think it's worth while to understand the industry. There is a tremendous amount of money that goes into deceiving consumers into buying wines that are not worth their price tag. If we are passionate about wine then we are conscious consumers. Demystifying the industry should be part of a wine drinkers education. Keep up the good work Gary. This is a favorite episode of mine.

    Great show

I just watched Beer Wars, a documentary about how bud has been killing the beer world. A must see for all craft beer folks. I had to pay 5 bucks to watch it, but you can see it cheaper.

  • porscheguy

GV NOT my favorite segment, definitely did not change the wine world tonight.
The different between his guests and the other “carpet baggers” is???????
They do it better? Do the growers and crushers and fermenters benefit?

  • TimF

What's this about points? You get points for posting now? Can I turn those in for wine?

  • Allan

Hey, you’ll always be my numero uno.

  • Lyman

It's a love hate sort of thing. I tune in to find one thing, great wine, and I get something I don't expect but 'am fascinated by, the bulk wine market. If you look around you see opportunity for Riesling from Washington, Pinot form Oregon, and Zin from Cali all over the place for incredible prices. But, if you don't understand how to market it you are on a fool's errand.

You could start a series of videos on just subjects like these and I would be sitting here transcribing every word. By the way I did take copious notes.

  • laurieinvt

    take a look at garyvaynerchuk.com

  • Focus groups: Still the best way to discover what people who don't value their time value.

Interesting show, Have had Joel Gott wines and most are very good, also had a Newman Chard recently at a restaurant and it was pretty good. “Pardon the interruption”. Have tried The Show Cab and it was so so. Most interesting part in part deux will be if Gary tastes the wine and it sucks….that will be awkward. http://www.winelx.com

  • Don Simpson

That was FASCINATING!!! So interesting to learn about the marketing and business aspects. Also sad to hear the outlook on the Malbec market in Argentina… Looking forward to Part 2

  • matthewjhale

Is this the first episode where wine was poured but not tasted? Fun to watch if your interested in business. I enjoyed it.

  • I'm liking the inside baseball talk. What I don't understand is, we have a~LOT of wines out there. We have more wine than the people to drink it. Why are they not pushing varietals like Cabernet Franc and St Crouix to introduce non-wine drinkers into the market? White drinkers are not as commited and/or loyal as red wine drinkers in my opinion. I do seminars for the beginner wine drinkers and I wish I had a larger selection of those good, easy reds.

great show, looking forward to parts 2 & 3. (well there are three guests)

  • True, but Charley is intelligent.

  • legrec

GV your probably right about your Malbec prediction but I don't understand why people would go for it. It is often too oaky right now so if the quality of bulk product go down and the oak is worst, it won't be different from the fake Australian shiraz. Why would the market repeat the same mistake and consumer buy it? I hope their Malbec won't show the oak monster. Taste it! I'm dying to know.

  • They also talk like they love what they do. That is so big in this economy.

  • Anonymous

That’s cause all the people who found it repetitive and boring skipped through it then probably left the site for something else. There’s only (at this time, 3:28 central) about 147 comments; far less than usual. The other 206 just don’t wear brown lipstick. ;]

  • I'd but the dvd.

  • Pat__B

Just so you know…when my evil business associates and I take advantage of the mispricing for quality grapes in South America, my wine will be called “The Purple Power Hour.” Keep an eye out GV.

  • Anonymous

    Like all wines.

  • Nice to see GV all geeked up on the business aspect… looking forward to part 2…

  • Anonymous

Really? Well done?? I saw the Three Stooges patch a tire with bubble gum once…it was pretty well done considering the people doing the job and the materials used! Maybe I’ll watch it again instead of part two tomorrow…at least the Stooges were funny.

  • Anonymous

Then why won’t he put it in his wine?

  • ONUMello

For not being a business person, I felt like I learned a lot today, it was very interesting! I just hope tomorrow all 3 guests get the chance to jump in equally- it seemed dominated by Charles today.

  • really enjoyed the more than “interesting banter”. it is a business and sometimes you need to talk about it and it's marketplace..
    look forward to part 2

  • Beeper

felt like I was watching garyvaynerchuk.com, but loved it!

  • Hey Guys

Cool, love the fact that you just sat and chattered… so much for the world exclusive tasting on the 9th!

    Cheers
    Andrew
