Seeing some fellow c-bus people on here, if you ever want to get together for a tasting I’d love to- reply on here or twitter @onumello

  • Anonymous

Yeah Gary, I can’t believe that in this age of technology we have to sign in EVERY time we comment complete with password. Am I an idiot? Am I doing something wrong that keeps Discus from remembering me from day to day?

  • Anonymous

A c-bus wine secret you should check out is La Chatelaine. They have restaurants in Worthington and UA, and all of the wines on their list are priced at $10 over state minimum. Good food at reasonable prices as well.

  • Anonymous

Oh, my bad. I just realized that Discus can’t remember me from HOUR to HOUR!

  • Anonymous

That’s what I said…..I was like….what happened to “the show” but it turned out pretty good today.

  • Anonymous

It’s ok but I like the old comments better. I don’t “hate it”….I just like the way it used to be better. Guess I’m old school…lol

  • Anonymous

I don’t…..I never have to sign it. Must be your cookies or something with your browser? Are you using I.E. ?

  • Anonymous

    That garyv.com link isn’t Gary’s site……

  • Anonymous

    Yeah, I.E

  • Anonymous

Humm…..so am I. I guess there is a glitch there somewhere.

  • Anonymous

Ok, it’s official, I’m a moron 🙂 Apparently I never logged in and have been posting as a guest from day one. Please someone, take this child’s hand 🙂

  • Anonymous

Sorry GV, read the reply to winecrazy below and feel free to belittle me all you want 🙂

  • Ha ha! was that YUK for the wine or the destination?! Going to see a friend from grad school when we were at VLS….turns out they have the 2nd largest parade in the country. Yes…felt compelled to do it..cliche, but could not help it. calling it Green Mountain Wee Folks Wine. It’s actually a nice aromatic blend of four grapes from the Champlain Valley, some reserved juice from the freezer, a few drops of the old green food coloring, and a clear bottle for show. Just a 6 pack for fun. The rest of the wine may be destined for a white sangria this summer, or if I an get hold of more champage bottles, I might do more bubbly with it, the first batch is great.

Wines like these are meant for immediate consumption; they MAY last for a year or two, but they probably won’t IMPROVE (unless you consider fading fruit an improvement).

I want a “The Show Malbec” poster!

  • QOTD1: Lots of folks. But I'll single out KBHK-UPN44 in San Francisco in 1997.
QOTD2: Ann Arbor, MI: Backroom Pizza, 605 Church St.
    QOTD3: brief

  • Allan

    Qotd1: ?
Ootd2: I only eat real food, so wouldn't know.
    Qotd3: Not Box.

Meh, show Gary. “This wine sucks, let's talk about the poster instead….”
Why did you make this a two parter? Wrong move. Boring questions.

Here's one: Who is your favourite wine maker/producer?

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • kylemittskus

Email sent!!! I commented before I heard that part.

Best pizza: Ray's in NY. I ate there 6 times in 6 days during my X-mas trip. A-MAZING and now I'm craving it. Damn you WL!

  • oregon5361

    Awesome show!!!!
    I want the Golden Ticket!!!

  • “Do you see the consequences of the way we have chosen to think about success? Because we so profoundly personalize success, we miss opportunities to lift others onto the top rung…We are too much in awe of those who succeed and far too dismissive of those who fail. And most of all, we become much too passive. We overlook just how large a role we all play?and by ‘we’ I mean society?in determining who makes it and who doesn?t.”
    ? Malcolm Gladwell

An enjoyable, educational episode. What's this about a tour? Are you stopping in columbus, ohio?
Try Carsonie's Stromboli and Pizza especially the original stromboli -1725 w. Lane Ave.

  • PeterKT

QOTD: Best Pizza in Boston: Regina Pizzeria. Since 1926, Regina Pizzeria has been greeting guests in the North End of Boston with a hearty “Welcome to Boston's Original Pizzeria!”

Seeing as how Joel's wife, Sarah has made some pretty substantial wines for some big names herself, for quite some time, and his father, Cary, did Montevina, I think, and helped establish glut juice king Fred Franzia AGES, ago, in a wine dynasty such as this, it may be his little daughter's (815) autograph, that may one day, be REALLY worth the big bucks, given the trajectory their on…!
No, but really, thanks to the 3 theives (that name is so unappealing, now that the brand has grown to such a level… but I know I just need to not be so serious, and I must say, that if you actally knew me, you'd know how unserious I really AM (except for in my wine career)!

  • Golden ticket…I love it. Going to track down The Show in my area now.

QOTD1: My old manager, Ted, who pushed me into a management program.
QOTD2: My old local joint in Jerz…Italian Village in Madison is still my fave.
QOTD3: I am usually a bottle person…I use the Chris The Cop method of 6 faves/6 trials for a case. However, I tried a lot of box wine in Chile…people shouldn't knock it until they've tried.

  • jms38

QOTD: Best in Grand Rapids, MI: Brick Road Pizza.

I won't lie, I really didn't want to watch this episode all the way through when I saw it was a multiple part episode. The first bit felt like it was going to be a “buddy buddy” show where everyone is loving each other and I'm glad I watched through because it was really a great learning episode for me and it really showed a different aspect to wine business. I had no idea you could do what the 3 Thieves are doing and I think it really makes for a different dynamic in the wine business when you have marketing people who have a dynamite idea of how to get product to the people take something and use their skills to promote and sell it. Great job, and love the energy from these guys. Best pizza in Sonoma County is in Petaluma at Old Chicago's Pizza. Get the pesto because they use a home made pesto sauce that is slathered underneath a massive layer of cheese. I am a bottle wine drinker and I wear boxers. The first person to give me a break in my entrepreneurial journey was Jay Pollack when I was 19. He co signed a loan for me that allowed me to buy my first coffee cart and I have never been the same. He stepped up when I had heard a hundred people say “no” and believed enough in an excited skinny teenager to allow me to follow my dreams, and never want to work for someone else ever again.

  • D_Rod

QOTD 1: That's easy. My parents are the reason I'm at where I'm at now.
QOTD 2: Nicks in Forest Hills, Queens, NY. Awesome brick oven pizza and great connolis.
QOTD 3: Limited experience with box wine. So bottle I guess.

  • johnfarrin

    I hate Disqus btw.

Great show!!!!!!!! Great info, great interplay, great entertainment. Anyone who thought it was boring IS.

    QOTD #1: Sadly no one
QOTD #2: Anna's, Lakewood, Ohio (don't even know if it's still there)
    QOTD #3: Brief/bottle

  • robbymac

QOTD #1, My wife gave me my biggest break by saying “YES”. #2, although I'm a California boy, the best pizza I've had was at Rocky's in Patterson NY. #3, BOXERS!

  • Pat__B

Check out Piece in Chicago. Pizza Joint / Brew Pub – quality on both counts.

QOTD: Many thanks to the great teachers I had in school.

  • drt999

QOTD 1 — too many to mention, albeit all in small ways
QOTD 2 — other than the pizza from an old family place in my home town, the best pizzas I've had were all in NYC, and you won't be in Sayre, PA
    QOTD 3 — brief

  • plcb

I'm usually a day late but I'm fairly early in the comment section today. I could even go email for one of the posters! Maybe. Maybe not. I'd love one but I'm not a collector.

QOTD1: My husband is giving me the opportunity or blessing to move on from my previous professional career to my early steps into a wine career. It's been a year and I'm loving it. He's exploring a new business plan. We'll let you know when we get our break. It's a great idea.
QOTD2: There are so many little local pizza places in the suburbs. I like the NY style pizza places but I'm not much help with this answer. Sorry. Away from my suburban life, I could suggest Tacconelli's Pizzeria in Philadelphia 2604 East Somerset Street
    Philadelphia, PA 19134
    215.425.4983
QOTD3: We're bottle wine drinkers and my husband wears boxers.

  • Zdodd

thieves – wanted to let you know that my wife and i hosted a pizza and blind wine tasting party a few months ago. bottles had to be $15 or less. the winner was THE SHOW cabarnet. i am pretty sure that all guests went out the next day and picked up a few bottles. my hope is that WORLD MARKET will carry the malbec.
QOTD #2 – charlottesville, VA – Christian's Pizza on the Downtown Mall.

  • guymandude

That was a great show, love the brainstorming, cool bunch of guys.

qotd; still waiting for someone to

  • Michael C in MKE

QOTD1: I can't thank one person. I've been fortunate enough to be elevated by so many awesome people.

QOTD2: Well I can only speak to Milwaukee. Pizza Man was pretty amazing until it burned to the ground 2 months ago. Perhaps Joel already knows about that. For my money the best pizza in town these days is at place called, “Transfer.”

QOTD3: Box or bottle is fine. I usually pour it in a glass anyway.

    QOTD3:

  • scottEJ

Thanks guys. Very good and interesting content. BTW – One of my first wines of any quality was a Joel Gott Cab. Thanks for helping me work harder and longer for my retirement, Joel.

QOTD: Spaca Napoli in Chicago. Best and freshest pizza I've ever had. Be sure and ask for their spicey oil if you get a chance.

    QOTD: Boxer-briefs. Unless I'm sleeping, then it's straight-up boxers.

  • robrx

    Go Thieves!

QOTD#1- No body you know, but a former boss-Rich Marini
QOTD#2-Any place that has a brick oven
QOTD#3-The company that can find the right box package that becomes cool/hip will do very well. I would like to like boxed wines if the quality was there.

  • Nice show…You guys provided an interesting insider perspective of your industry.

QOTD 1: I am grateful to Jeff C. for giving me my first independent consulting engagement. My career took off from there.

QOTD2: Kinchley's in Mahwah, NJ. Best thin crust pizza you can find anywhere.

QOTD2: Boxers in the summer, boxer briefs in the winter, bottles only.

  • I've been waiting for a show like this for a long time. An innovative label with quality juice in the bottle. YES, it can be done. Creative think tank.
QOTD 1: I'm still waiting for that chance.
    QOTD 2: Astor Pizza, NYC
QOTD 3: I'm personally scared he asked that question!

    Thank you.
