Love the sports cards intro, only a shame no big names came out the pack. Would’ve been interesting to have seen GV’s reaction if a jet came out…

  • Maybe if the games had been in Calgary?

Personally, I was astonished Don Cherry was nowhere to be seen. How do you not get him involved?

  • Anonymous

Like I said, I don’t care myself, but if you’re right they’ll be a lot of disappointed folks here in NC!

  • Anonymous

My store sells both the Crocker & Starr and the Hillside Select. Maybe some day I’ll buy a Crocker & Starr. I’ll definitely recommend it to customers.

  • philoxera

    First!!!!!

  • drew82

GV, I was reading Bill Simmons today and thought of you when i read this.

How was Bret “The Hitman” Hart not involved in Canada's Opening Ceremonies? I mean, he doesn't have to light the torch, but The Excellence of Execution has to be involved somehow, right?

There's a discussion that's fit for the Thunder Show, I think.

P.S. The Sharpshooter remains my favorite wrestling move of all time.

  • oregon5361

I was thinking about cracking some open tonight…..
    must of read my mind!!

ITS BACK!!!!!!!!!! Never have I been happier to see a couch in my life!

  • MarkFitzpatrick

Been a LONG time since you hit the couch….

  • MarkFitzpatrick

TOTALLY agree. The Hitman is my favorite Canandian. Period. Yes, there were some other comedians and stuff, but can they touch the Hitman? I don't think so.

  • mattgmann

    laid back friday!

  • MarkFitzpatrick

And actually have not had Gigondas….Hmmmm. Since Cindy doesn't come to Maryland, guess I'll head up to a local store.

  • XpensiveWino

Yes, the laid back couch is back! Gary finally got the junk cleared out of the way lol! Oh and Top 10.

  • mattgmann

    hell yeah to the gigondas

  • Vernon-Jackson

Probably had 1 or 2 Gigondas, but can't remember much about them. Definitely going to try the Bosquets.

    Baylor, Kansas, Syracuse, Georgetown

  • Thanks for bringing back the couch!

  • Love the laid back Friday couch.

QOTD1: I have never had Gigondas but I will have to seek some out.
QOTD2: Kansas looks unbeatable right now. I also think Baylor might be an upset this year. They looked pretty good knocking my Texas Longhorns out of the Big 12 Tournament last night. Also Kentucky and maybe Duke. Theres four.

  • thrawn1020

It's the Couch! How long has it been?!

I haven't even watched the episode yet, but hell yes!

  • LAID BACK!!! Skeet. And Cards??? What a great combo.

QOTD: No bull crap… yes, I have. I'm a fan.

Does anyone else get tomato soup when they're smelling Rhone grenache? I almost always get that. Love to hear some feedback.

The other QOTD: I can't even think about it right now because the GRIZ are Dancin'!!!!!!!! I might pee myself if they go to the final four.

  • winecrazy

Nice…I'm on the couch…watching you on the couch…!!!!!

It's a laid back Friday indeed.

  • mattgmann

qotd 1: yes, but they're hard to find around here. They tend to be tucked away on bottom shelves, or jammed behind the more popular rhones.

  • zrm

FRIDAY COUCH!!!!! Gary you got to do this more often.

Side QOD: nope never but I will try to find it.

QOD: this one is super hard without the bracket set up. I'll go chalk with Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, and Syracuse. Of those i would put kentucky as the least likely to make the 4

  • vankula

Not gonna like, never had a Gigondas that I know of.

QOTD: Watch out for my Butler Bulldogs baby!! Sweet 16 will not be good enough this year.

  • Matt

    MSU Always finds a way.

  • Amont

Great show! Just tried the Montrius 2004 Gigondas from you about a week ago and really liked it. So I just orded some of the Bosquets, looking forward to it!

  • pawncop

    Very good episode.

QOTD side – not Gigondas but really enjoy grenache. Will try one soon for certain.

QOTD – Sorry not much of basketball fan in any way shape or form. I always hope Texas wins at whatever they are in competition for.

  • gotsha

    GV, yes…I've had a Gigondas.

    QOTD….I'm a Villanova grad, can you say N O V A in the final 4?

  • Braden G

Have had a couple but not too impressed with what they brought to the table. Just one guy's opinion though.

Side-note – I found the Crocker & Starr cab you tasted the other day and it is AWESOME! Worth every penny and about 1/3 of the cost of the Shafer Hillside Select you referenced.

  • drt999

QOTD 'side' — haven't had one in a long time, if ever; just haven't seen many

QOTD — to tell the truth, I don't care, but if at least one North Carolina team doesn't make it, there will be great sadness here!

  • mattgmann

    final four….
tough without the brackets. Matchups are EVERYTHING

Kansas I think has the best shot. I'd love to put my buckeyes in the final four, but unless they somehow get a 1 seed I think they'll end up in Kansas' bracket.

Cuse is another obvious pick. They played sloppy their last 2 games, but I think they'll turn it around and rock the tourney.

West Virginia I think has a legitimate shot. They play tough, and a little dirty, and their defense is relentless. Slow starts have hurt them, but if they can stay in games early, they are great at finishing.

And I'm going to finish off with some Homer Love. In my heart of hearts I honestly think the Bucks are a little over rated, but Evan Turner isn't. We've seen plenty of times in the past single players dragging their teams deep into the tournament. After his psycho-clutch buzzer beater today, I think he's gonna roll.

First 1 seed out is Duke. Other teams I think will flop early are Wisconsin, Villanova, and Purdue.

No real cinderella picks this year, but also no drop dead favorites. If I was going to pick one team to go deep that shouldn't……..Maryland? Gary Williams is a hell of a coach, and they've played well as of late.

But, talk to me monday. These predictions could all likely change once there's a bracket in hand.

  • jayhitek

30 Sports cards of people I have never heard of.
Love the laid back friday! Welcome back! And welcome back the BigAssGlass!!
QOTD: They haven't even announced all 64 teams yet. That being said Kentucky. Coached by my old college coach (I didn't play. I watched as a student. Coach Cal.) Saw the best 4 years of UMass hoops history.

  • Gettin' Giggy wid it

  • Yes, I've had Gigondas a few times

  • thrawn1020

    QOTD: No, I haven't. Yes, I know.

As far as Grenache-based wines though, in the $20 range I had an 05 Quindals from Spain in December that was phenomenal. Just out of this world.

Real QOTD: Well, I don't even know if they are going to make it, but ILL-INI? I have to say that UConn always seems to come up big. And I am a hater of Duke and NC both, so I'm going to stay out of Raleigh for a few years.

Loved the hockey cards…before your show I had no idea those even existed, but then again, I came to hockey later than I came to wine. Go Blackhawks! vs. Capitals on Sunday, before jury duty on Monday. NBC Game of the week, now we get hockey since Football is over!

  • Bosco

Thanks to a previous Thunder Show featuring the Gig, I've tried several since then and have enjoyed them immensely, especially at the price point. The last really good one I had was 2006 Duc de Montfront.

QQOTD: Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and for a Cinderella pick, Temple.

  • Never had a Gigondas, but due to the fact that you compair the nose to gutting a deer tells me, dude, you never gutted a deer. But I did get the idea.

QOTD: Sorry, don't like BBall. sad part is i'm 6'7″ and everyone asks; You play basketball? To which I reply,no, sorry. One time a guy in DD caught me in a bad mood and said;” You're tall you must play basketball!” To which I replied;” You're short, you must be a jockey!” Not one of my prouder moments, I must say.

  • mattgmann

The Illini just played their way into the tourney by thumping Wisconsin. Nice change as they've played like utter crap the second half of the big ten season. They are a good squad, but I think they'll be a one and done. Hopefully not.

  • GLrocks

QOTD no #1 Seeds will make it to the Final Four
good to see GV back in action . To be honest I like it when he goes right in to it as
far as the wines. That card was awful…..I thought you were going to pull out a Bob Hurley

  • thrawn1020

It's been an up and down year for them. I was shocked that they were ranked early in the season, and my shock has been borne out over the course of it. They have enough talent that they could surprise someone, but their seed is going to be so low that it will be tough. They are going to have to really step it up.

Really liked this episode. Laid back Friday, Snifey Sniffs, cards of all varieties the big ass glass, fantastic camera work by Mott and best of all; fuc**ing awesome QPR Rhone wines. What more can I say?

SQOTD: No, but rest assured I will be looking for them now.

QOTD: I know absolutely nothing about basketball. I think they should go back to peach baskets on the top of old telephone poles.

  • Jay

Curious – Did anyone else look up Brian Grant to see what was up with him after Gary mentioned his health? It's interesting how the most minor mentions can lead one to Googling and learning new things.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/otl/news/story?i… for those who were wondering.

  • adrums

Big fan of southern rhones including Gigondas. The Saint Cosme bottling are awesome, with the regular cuvee in '07 being a terrific buy…
Hey GV, how about a CA vs WA cab showdown… featuring Larkmead and Gorman?!
    It'd be super-sweet… just a thought…
    QOTD: repeat for the Gators.

  • theDude

Laid back Friday rocks because it follows laid back Thursday and laid back Wednesday, etc, etc…… The Dude is always “chillin”!!

Never had Gigondas but I've had Haagen Dazs. Too bad there's not a pairing there. The Dude's QOTD: What wine should I pair with my Haagen Dazs dulce de leche??

The Big12 is on it this year and will take it all! Kansas and K State should both be #1 seeds and will meet each other in the finals!!! (remember 1988 Kansas vs Oklahoma)

  • aaroncello

Just craving a laid back friday. Didn't even leave a comment about it. Been watching the old ones, through April '08. And thought it was time for a contemporary LBF. Nice.

  • davidemillombard

I've watched zero b-ball and zero sportscenter so I have no intelligent comments to make on Final 4 pics.

I've never had that varietal. Being the new'b that I am, at 93pts GV, ya better believe I'm fired up to partake. Cheers!

  • theDude

Tar Heels and Wolfpack both suck this year. Sorry but that is hilarious!!!!!! And if Duke loses first round it will make my basketball year!!!!

  • Phredd3

Wines just taste better on the couch, dude. Nice show. Short, to the point, good deal.

But now I have a complaint: Episode 818. Schwag. We need that shirt.

Side QOTD: I have had one Gigondas. Loved it. Love the GSMs in general. CdP, Vacqueyras, Gigondas.

QOTD: UConn, Stanford, Tennessee, and Nebraska.

Oh, wait…you meant the men, didn't you? Well, OK, how about Syracuse, Kansas, Purdue, and Butler. I'm dying to put my Dukies into both groups, but I think the women will fall in the regional championships, and I think the men rely too much on the three and will have one bad shooting game at the Sweet Sixteen. I just felt like dissing Kentucky for the heck of it.
