Love the sports cards intro, only a shame no big names came out the pack. Would’ve been interesting to have seen GV’s reaction if a jet came out…

first post. had my first taste of gigondas and vacqueyras at a little vineyard last summer when in provence. def on my radar when going thinking about nice rhone wines.
qotd: OSU, georgetown, kentucky and syracuse

  • DAveAll

Gigondas! Love to say it. Love to drink it.

Final four? sports? sigh. no comment.

  • CharlieTN

That was they angriest strawberry pie I've ever seen!

No, never had Gigondas, but I've had lots of other Southern Rhone things. Me like.

    QOTD: Kentucky.

  • jsums

YES! The laid back Friday returns! More, please! QOTD1 – Had tons of Gigondas. It's actually my favorite appelation on the planet…probably because it's also my “revelation” wine. It was a Domaine les Pallieres 2004 Gigondas that first blew my mind and started my whole wine obsession a few years ago. You can get CdP-ish terroir, power, and complexity for a third of the price. In fact, I just picked up a couple bottles of the Arnoux '07 Gigondas and Chapelle-St-Arnoux '07 Vacqueyras just yesterday. I'm pumped to give them a shot. QOTD2 – Tennessee all the way.

  • JustinM

Hahaha, that pack was freakin terrible. You got to open more packs, fun stuff!

  • theDude

    I think it's a great combo! 🙂

  • JustinM

QOTD: Watch out for those Cal Bears! They are on fire!

Other than that I think it's Villanova, Syracuse, and Duke.

  • Update:

I went out and tried a Gigondas last night. It was pretty alright! Here's my review on Cork'd:

  • winemonologues

Side QOTD; No, but have one ready to go in the cellar! Have had a CdP and loved it so looking forward to Gigy!

QOTD: depending on seedings (as a lot of teams took a beating this weekend). . . Ohio St., Syracuse, Kansas and Kentucky.

  • lordsauvignon

Side QOTD: …No, but I'm looking forward to trying it.
QOTD: I don't follow basketball. But my wife went to Maryland so I'm pulling for them.

If you had a mirror up we would have seen that sweet shot between the camera and the mike.

  • The card industry went downhill once they got crazy with all the inserts.

Great having a chance to finally meet you at SXSW even if only for a few minutes. Your sincere appreciation for my support is the reason why you are so successful.

Keep up the great work and I look forward to future encounters.

  • Pat__B

QOTD: Kansas, Kansas St., WVU, KY. Think Kansas St. pulls of a massive upset.

Gigondas? Sounds good and really appreciate the episode…but if my brackets pay off, can't say it would be my first pick…

  • Michael D

    Gary,

As a University of Michigan grad, I gotta go with the wolverines to win it all!

Yes, I loved the two 93 point rated bottles of Perrin & Fils 2005 Gigondas La Gille (93 pts WS) that I have drunk. Had one in November, the other on New Years Eve that complemented one of the best steak with seafood topping meals I've ever had. I brought it in to Restaurant Cypress in New Orleans (Metairie) Louisiana and paid 15 corkage. Fantastic meal with friends. I have one bottle remaining of the three I bought at 26.99. Great wine!

  • rustyf

I also drank a rose that my son brought back from his semester in Lyon (LSU law school does a semester there) – Gigondas La Cave Signature Rose 2007. He and I drank it on a hot wet evening 8/31/2008 at his apartment while my wife and I were fleeing from Hurricane Gustav. 80% Grenache 20% Syrah-Mouvedre. Light, cold, refreshing, delicious!

  • MarcBelgium

Nice show, a little bit overacting but nice wines. And, as you say, a region that should be known better.

Side Question. Yes, absolutely. I have some in my cellar.

  • QOTD side: Yes
QOTD: What's a Final Four? Who cares about these things? 🙂

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

    Us BasketBall Fanatics “care”………. :o)

  • RieslingRich

Cant recall, but will try one soon
Syracuse, Kentucky, Kansas, and finally Gonzaga

  • It’s gary’s show, and he loves sports. And it’s all of his little quirks that many of us Vayniacs love so very much. He doesn’t – and shouldn’t – change just to cater to your pleas that he be more global. If you don’t like his quirks, then go watch some stuck-up wine snob elsewhere.

  • gotta love the strawberry jam in grenache blends from the rhone.

  • Hope you guys can beat out the Penguins this year – bloody Cindy Crosby. Go Wings!

  • Illegal_Formation

Been lurking for a couple months, but I'm ready to mix it up.

Good show. I've never had a Gigondas, but I will definitely look for that first one. ($23 is still a little out of my price range.) Gigondas is fun to say.

Please don't throw Jason Gildon cards on the ground. He was way underrated and a big contributor on some good but not great Steelers teams. Respect.

QOTD: Big East is for real, and I think it will get at least two teams in the Final Four. For now, I'm saying Villanova and Syracuse. I also like Kansas and, as a bit of a dark horse, Mich St. Experience is key in the tourney.

  • theDude

?? Gary is all about marketing and the “brand”. I’m helping him to
conquer the world! You’ve got to appeal to the masses if you want to
be as big as GV is dreaming baby!!!

  • side Q – Yes, been jamming on 07 Rhones. the vintage was so good that even some of the value plays really stepped up. The low end Delas Freres I've are very good. Gigondas and CDR.

    QOTD – Kansas for sure

Thanks for the tip on the Gigondas, Cheers!

  • Bill B

I totally agree. I met Gary at American University and his reaction to my soliloqy about his show and family members at the book signing table was touching for its apparent sincerity. Thanks Gary.

  • Bill B

…and what was Gary doing at SXSW? (Jealous)…

  • Bill B

QOTDside: Yeah, had a 2006 Domaine Saint-Damien La Sauterades about a month ago. It was okay. I gave it an 89. I've had Chateauneuf's that I liked a whole lot more, so I wasn't terribly impressed. Maybe I should try some more.

    QOTD: No idea.

  • divyamistry

First of all, TOTALLY agree on the tomato juice and snickers. If I forget to grab some snack from home, or suddenly get hungry… I'm looking for a vending machine to get one of those giant snickers bars. And tomato juice on air-plane is no brainer. It tastes good AND helps with that food craving.

Side QOTD: No, never had Gigondas.
    QOTD: Huh?

  • GV, I totally dig on tomato juice (especially with a wedge of lemon) – aka, virgin bloody marry. And snickers bars are always good, esp frozen with the snap of the nougat and the slow, sweat melt of the chocolate and caramel.

Good episode. I love Gigondas! It's based on my favorite, and a very underrated grape varietal – the oh, so flexible Grenacha. Keep up the nice tight episodes – love it!

  • Since the alma matter (maize and blue) isn't dancing, I suppose I'll just root against the Suck-eyes in every game they play…

  • swmurphy

    KANSAS, DUKE, PITT, WEST VIRGINA

  • Beeper

Good to see the laid back Friday make a return

sQOTD: nope, but have 3 sitting in my cellar waiting…
QOTD: Ohio St, Kentucky, Syracuse, Duke

  • jcrazy

    Love the Gigondas.

    QOTD: No clue.

  • Great laid back, paid back, episode. Missed the couch….wish I would have missed the mid-riff shot though. You are dead on the mark with the Snickers or V-8….but with one minor correction: you want to do a Snickers AND a V-8 simultaneously. Total sweet/salty smackdown goodness.

QOTD 1/2: Rhônes rock the house! Tavel, Lirac, Pape, but most def Gigondas. I have totally gotten giggy with the Gigas. In fact, the Plaid Avenger did a WW2 mission over Gigondas back in the day, cartoon-style, and I would love some WLTV feedback on this wine education if GV or anyone else has a chance to look at it:
    http://www.boyerwine.com/wp-content/uploads/201

You got to the the old-school comic book format, and a good Gigondas to appreciate. Thanks for an awesome exciting Gigondas episod GV, always get excited seeing people tap into the Rhône. They are always the best quality/price points in France in my experience, and those Giga's are way better priced than the Pape's, and often just as intense.

Speakng of which, now I know even more about the Rhônes thanks to The Chateauneuf du Pape Wine Book from Harry Karis that I found out about right here on WLTV! (episode #806-07) This thing is totally awesome. To quote KISS: I want to rock and Rhône all night, and party everyday! Or something to that effect…

  • Michael D

Just kidding, Brutus. A guy's gotta have a dream, right?

  • mcinpat

Gonzaga,Cal,Duke,Stanford Dream-picks are picks too. BTW you just inspired a parody video that the Daily Crushers are going to do. Frigin awesome!

  • mattgmann

Do they make spicy V-8 in cans? I drink the stuff like it's going out of style, but either have to buy in the big bottle, or carry around hot sauce to spike it.

V-8 and beer is also frickin good. Poor man's bloody marry, or “red beer” as we call it.

As for snickers bars…..though fantastic…..they don't help my increasing waist line since leaving the marine corps

  • chukheadted

nope–no gigondas for me. and the bosquets sold out within hours on friday.

GARY–can you please put a bottle limit for customers ordering wines that you give huge scores to??

  • Allan

Yo G, a show on Rías Baixas could be cool. Not many people know about it. Let's get some spanish white wine….. and let's celebrate the Albariño grape….. could be an eyeopener for some Vayniacs.

  • Lvine

Always interesting to learn about wines from lesser known areas of France (and the rest of the world)….especially when they're reasonably priced! I haven't had a Gigondas yet, but it's definitely on my radar now. Saludos!

  • trucbinouche

I have to say that Gabriel Meffre doeas this amazing Gigondas Laurus, fianl 4 have no idea what so ever!

  • Had a Gigondas once or twice, during my wine training, but I don't recall the producer. One was a little young, with hard tannins, the other one was wonderful. Nice smooth wine, with ripe tannins and lots of fruit. A real treat. I've put Gigondas on my wish list!!
And concerning the final 4: I don't have a clue!! We Dutchies have a hard time watching basketball, since it isn't aired anywhere…

By the way: Did you do a Jura, French Alps episode already?? I'm curious how you all think about Vin Jaune or Vin de Paille.

  • Vayniac 2.0

Gigondas, slurp slurp…. nice. Qpr is always good!

Crowd pleasing move, would be some blind-tasting!

  • tobymarcus

    QOTD:
I recently bought the DOMAINE DU GRAPILLON D'OR 1806 GIGONDAS 2007. I ntend to wait a few more years they give it a shot!

  • I've had a Gigondas from La Ferme du Mont, and it's actually very nice, priced at 16 euro's.

    QOTD: No-idea.

  • Heading to Italy next week, anyone have any wine recommendations?? Watch for videos as we eat and cook our way though Italy. http://thehappydiabeticchef.blogspot.com/
    QOTD: for sure not IOWA!!
