line of the day – ‘I just got mesmerised for a second’

The longest roll around in the mouth of any wine on wine library tv, it went on for ages I thought GV was fooling around, but as the comment of the day indicates, he was totally blown away by the last wine and as a result, the show was a corker

Nice show. CKC here (big shout out to Rice University in Houston, TX!) Have actually had quite a few St. Emilions and I really tend to like them, especially the '05s. One of the best wine deals I've seen was Chateau Gros Caillou St. Emilion Grand Cru 2005 for 18 bucks at Costco.

Lately, I've been re-watching all the old episodes of Mad Men in preparation for catching up with the latest season. Actually, is it even on right now? Not sure. Anyway, it's a great show.

QOTD: Baseball season is about to begin, which makes this question irrelevant.

Side QOTD: Still waiting for that corporate AMEX….

Gary = Coming into his own.
    Mott = Irreplaceable.

  • KVM1985

side QOTD: No St. Emilion, sorry!

QOTD: I haven't had cable or a TV for several years…so YOU are the closest thing to a TV show that I get. I am lame…I know.

    Have a great day everyone!

    Getting hooked on Damages.
Great show Gary, really makes me want to go splurge on a St Emilion. Although its expensive, I know I'll never look back on my life and say “I wish I had drank cheaper wine”.
Keep up the great shows, Bro!

  • Side QOTD: Spent 5 Days Wine Touring Bordeaux last September. St. Emilion is a beautiful area. Big fan of Clos Fourtet and Chateau Fonplegade. I also enjoy Chateau Cardinal-Villemaurine. The winemaker there was incredibly kind to my Wife and I.

  • Beausejour – pronounced more or less: bo say jour (like bonjour, take out “n” and put se). Murailles needs some work too. gv, you finally got francois right a few episodes ago. bravo! French people really hate mangled pronunciations, I should know because I'm not French.
st. emilion: just had the 2001 Pipeau but didn't like it much. Sure its dense for bordeaux but also monolithic and closed, like the lineman who only knows the words beer and dude. qotd: my fav new show is the next ball game.

  • O'Shea

    I love the Bordeaux shows.

    QOTD1: Yes. Several

  • Never had a St Emilion.

Favorite show right now would have to be either community or chuck. Both very funny.

  • JohnsGSD

Thank you for putting on such a great show G. I remember the first time I had a St. Emilion. It was at a wine tasting at my LWS. It was from a lesser known estate, but it was 100% merlot. The proprietor had poured a glass for me and after tasting it, I incredulously asked, “This is 100% merlot???? This is amazing!”. My only experience up to that point had been American merlot at the same price point and I couldn't stand it. This was a revelation for me.

I ordered 6 bottles of the 04 Sansonnet a while ago, and have gone through all of it. Loved it. I cheated and had a bottle of the 06 Quinault l'Enclos La Reserve (after a 3 hour decant), and it was spectacular with dinner. Needless to say, my perception of merlot changed that day. I have plenty of 05 St. Emilion sleeping in my cellar (will have to wine-searcher the Beausejour Duffau).

QOTD: WLTV of course! Seriously, I hardly watch the boob tube anymore. I only have basic cable, and that's for the local weather when hurricane season is in full force. If anything, I turn on PBS to watch shows from the BBC. Love the British wit & sarcasm.

    Take it easy,
    John D.

  • My favorite show is Breaking Bad (check it out Gary you will love it).

  • Mott= Ed McMahon

    Gary= Johnny Carson

  • Cool_Dave

    Yo evryone —
Never had St Emilion. I am drinking a KILLER 2003 Chateau Puygeuraud as I am writing this. Its near Saint Emilion and Merlot based with Cabernet Frank and Malbec. $25.00 : )

QOTD2 – I dont watch new TV only stuff on Net Flix streaming. Lost is the newest thing I'm watching. I'm on season 3.

  • Cool_Dave

    Lost rocks!!

  • Cool_Dave

watching Anthony Bourdain No Reservations on NetFlix streaming.

  • Until someone can come up with a better concept than televising a “Slap Bet,” How I met your Mother is easily one of my faves!

  • philanderson

I don't know if this applies but my favorite show this week will be the first round of the NCAA basketball tournament! Go Dawgs! WOOF!

  • castello

It's not lame! GV beats the hell out of most tv, and no commercials!

  • castello

    Trivial? I don't think so.

  • castello

What do you do with it after? Poor excuse for polluting the world.

  • Great show! Don't know much about St Emilion… but I've loved the few that I've had. The French sure know what to do with Merlot.

    QOTD:
    1. House
    2. Mad Men
3 Sex and The City reruns
4 Real Time with Bill Maher

  • QOTD: yeah, had a St. Emilion at a wine tasting, don't remember which producer for sure.
2nd QOTD: not really into TV. will watch the occasional family guy, simpson's or sports but thats about it

  • Englishexlurker

QOTD 1 yeah loads! lol. top ones mostly at tastings had chevel blanc 99 and was not that imprssed, I remember Figiac 2000 was awesome. Angelous 04, 06, 07 too young to really get to grips with. I am also a big fan on a tiny 4 acre estate that i shall not name on the slim chance i might increase demand by a half case (yeah i know fat chance but this stuff is gold dust…)! It has ancient 80 year old vines and unique terroir. About £50 a pop but so worth it! For more frequent drinking i am more of a fan of such wines as ch Cote montpazat from Cote de Castillion.

    QOTD 2

I love The Wire. Sopranos, and various Brit comedies you guys wont know such as The thick of it, Peep Show, Im Alan Partridge, Saxondale…

  • Oakmon’s BF

Filming on series 4 is to begin on Friday, March 26th, 2010. Here in the US I probably won’t get to see it until it’s on DVD.

  • SideQOTD: Sure – had a few St Emilions over the years

  • LMNOPinot

Loved your YUCK face after wine #2.
QOTD: Big Love, Breaking Bad, The Pacific!!!, Old Zatoachi episodes.
    Side QOTD: Nothing memorable…yet.

  • LMNOPinot

Are you saying Gary loves the Meth?

  • LMNOPinot

@Gary Ask what people are reading as I need a new book to read and I'm curious about the masses.

  • Sean

I have had several St. Emillion wines. I am starting to become more interested in the right bank wines, i have generally preferred the classic style left bank wines. I tried the 2002 Pavie based on your recommendation and it was awesome. I am thinking about buying a bottle of the 03. Pavie really changed my mind about St Emillion. I loved how the wine was very earth driven with wonderful terroir and complexity. Not really sure what all the fuss is about Perse, I think Pavie is awesome.

As far as merlot is concerned and Sideways, I think its rather ironic that the iconic wine mentioned throughout the movie is the 1961 Cheval Blanc which is of course the famous St Emillion. I know that Cheval Blanc is generally close to equal with Cab franc and merlot, but still. I always took the merlot line in Sideways to refer to overly simple, boring CA merlot. And my question of the day to you is are there any truly great CA merlots. Not Bordeaux blends but straight merlots? I feel like I have been kind of closed minded about them, and I am trying to not base opinions on ignorance.

Interesting show, I love when you taste Bordeaux, and French wine in general. I love French wine because they are the clearest expressions of the earth. Keep em coming!

  • MarcBelgium

    Great, great show.

Side QOTD. I had a lot of Saint Emilion, but I do not adore them. To much Merlot, which is in my opinion a boring grape, easy drinking.
That being said; I might order – after this show – Beausejour. I give it another try.

QOTD. Mott mentioned Top Gear. That's a big hit overhere. Even woman are crazy about it.

Gary, you should try to pronounce the French names a little bit more precise. For example: Beausejour means beau (fine) sejour (stay). What you made of it was another language :).
Grand Murailles, the same. It was like Spanish to me.

But, I prefer bad pronunciation with good info over the oposite.

  • jocro

Great show… Never had St. Emilion, going to steal some money from my sister, to buy this 3rd wine 🙂 I am still a student …
    QOTD: entourage!!!

  • Gary must have had a rough day. I've never seen him swallow so much wine.

QotD(s): Never had St. Emilion, and won't for a long time judging by the prices. The fact that merlot got such a bad rap by a bunch of Hollywood douche bags makes me want to like it all the more. On the other hand, American producers don't seem to know what to do with merlot, so maybe they have a point. Whatever … I'm 1/4 French and my last name is all French, so I drink French.

My current favorite is Lost. I was a huge BSG fan, so I'm also loving Caprica. Definitely not as good, but it's altogether different.

  • evegoe

Breaking Bad… marathons on AMC now… amazing show… very complex and right mix of action, drama, and you're not quite sure where it's headed.

  • Oakmon’s BF

I agree with stevo. Mott, you?ve got to mix it up. Show some initiative. Don?t just follow Gary?s rules, make up some rules yourself. You need to interject some Mottisms into the show.

  • wayno daaaaa wino

Yo castello, I always put my styrofoam in the recycler bin, ain’t that a
    recycliable thing ???? No ??

  • Anonymous

Personal preference I suppose. Over the years I’ve found that I enjoy better Cabernets, Burgundies & Bordeauxes and certain others with 7+ years of age on them. Fortunately, I have plenty of wine too be able to wait for them to reach their (for my palate) potential.

  • wayno daaaaa wino

“turd blossom”??? What da heck is that????? Guess i just ain’t that “hip”
    anymore………. :o)

  • Oakmon’s BF

Interesting, I?m pretty sure I?ll never look back on my life and say, ?I wish I had pissed away more money.?

  • audiofan

Really?? Merlot is boring??? Does that include all the Petrus and Le Pin you've had?
If you've had “a lot” but don't care for them, it seems like the odds that you'll like the Beausejour would be small. Don't know your definition of “easy drinking”, but right-bank, 100% Merlot wines from Pomerol such as the two mentioned above (as well as most of the Merlot-dominated wines from St. Emilion like Pavie, Ausone, etc.) are some of the most complex, structured, and long-lived wines on the planet. Most are closed, tannic monsters if you try to consume them within 3-4 years after release, as most posters on this board apparently do. Just wonderin'…if Merlot is too “easy drinking” what kind of grape do you like? – Peace.

  • audiofan

    GV,
As Robert Parker has stated repeatedly, the scores for the wines he tastes are what he believes the wine will be “at maturity”; in other words, at its peak – anticipated maturity is a piece of information he usually includes with every review. It would also be a service to your viewers to remind them of things such as bottle variation, wines that are in a 'closed', or 'dumb' stage, and the difficulty of judging a wine that has not been decanted properly. Very few modern Bordeaux are fined and filtered these days; many of them will have at least some sediment after 4-5 years. Shaking these wines up and pouring them for an accurate critical tasting without decanting is problematical at best.

  • He did a show just recently when he gulped all four wines 🙂

  • Roland

    Hi Gary
