line of the day – ‘I just got mesmerised for a second’

The longest roll around in the mouth of any wine on wine library tv, it went on for ages I thought GV was fooling around, but as the comment of the day indicates, he was totally blown away by the last wine and as a result, the show was a corker

    Dear diary: JACKPOT!

    This show rocks! Quagmire in da house..

  • I know you say it a lot, but I promise, I don't pay for cable, I don't watch TV, I stay busy, BUT the only show that I do still watch (pre ordered last season on iTunes) is LOST.

    The trick is to find and buy good, cheap, delicious wine to drink while you’re waiting for the really good stuff to mature. I’ve found a few $10 and under to fit that bill.
    2008 d’Arenburg Stump Jump Shiraz
    2006 Haven’s Merlot
    2008 Castle Rock Central Coast Pinot Noir

    Oddly enough, World Market, often has specials on these type of wines and on the West Coast Safeway often has good sales on Greg Norman Limecoast Shiraz which are very consistent from year to year. Look for 2007 Pillar Box Red (Shiraz, Cabernet, Merlot) at $8-10.

    Great show. Don't think i've had the pleasure of a St Emilion yet. Definitely a region that i look forward to trying.

    side QotD: Never had a St. Emilion…but gonna have to put it on my birthday list now.
    QotD: as much as I am embarassed to admit it, Toddlers and Tiaras.

    I get the concept but I have a pile of cheaper stuff that sits in the bottom of the closet that I don’t really want to drink. World market is pretty good for that stuff. I have tried the Havens and Castle Rock and I even bought GV’s 8 bone French cab for that reason. My budget allows for too much right now but it will catch up with me. Tx for the reccomendations.

  • srdonjulio

    We can't wait!

  • I have never had a St. Emilion. I'll try to pick up a bottle for a special occasion. My favorite TV show would be South Park. New episode this wednesday!!!

    QPf******R!

    Enjoying an old-vines Saint-Chinian this enchanted evening from 2007 (can't be more than 10 bones in the US)

    And it is rocking…. Easily a 90p wine. Dark cherries goes leather goes barnyard action goes bonfire and back again… It's all over the place… Made my evening, cheers!

    QOTD: The Office. Pam breast-fed the wrong baby in this past week's episode. What's not to like about that?

    Nice episode of WLTV. I'm not a CKC, but I've never been one to drop that kind of coin on a single bottle, but I'm sure it's a great wine.

  • jsums

    Had pleanty of St. Emilion, hit and miss even for '05. When they're good they're amazing, but I've had lots of “meh” St. Emilion as well. QOTD – Deadliest Catch. RIP Captain Phil. We'll miss you, brother.

    Apparently, Lauren Bacall = Evander Holyfield. That's awesome, thanks Gary.

    I've tasted a $10 St. Emilion… don't recall enjoying it too much, but my palate may have changed since then. The biggest complaint I have against Bordeaux is the fact that one can't seem to be able to enjoy a relatively inexpensive bottle. I'm talking about something in the sub-$25 range. Rhones tend to deliver a lot more value at those prices. Even an easy-drinking, entry-level Cotes-du-Rhone will have some dimension to it. The Bordeaux I've tried have all been overly sour and unattractive, and I can't help but think that it's all because I haven't shelled out any serious money for them (i.e. not more than $20). I just bought a $15 St. Emilion today (coincidence? maybe…) and I'm wondering whether I'll just be disappointed again.

    QOTD – Mott stole my answer!… I don't watch Top Gear regularly, though. I just can't name a current TV show I'd prefer over TG.

  • Allan

    Did i spell it wrong, my bad. He uses twitter i know.

    Agree. You make a great point…!

  • Anonymous

    Now that’s a classic comparison!

  • Dan

    First time commenter here and it doesn't even have to do with the show… but it's a wine question for all you experts out there. Maybe Gary V and jump in too and give the low down.

    My soon to be uncle-in law (a guy pretty full of himself) gave my fiance and me a bottle of wine as a present… Chateau de Ferrand Saint Emilion Grand Cru 1996.

    He claims is is valued at over $2,000 or something like that and yet I am finding it many places for $48 bones or there about.

    Seems like a great wine, but what's the real story on this one?

    I appreciate it!

  • jeffisrad

    Never had a St. Emilion, but I have been getting back into Merlot recently.

    QOTD: “Parks and Rec.” & “Community”

    Mott = Center

    Gary = Quarterback

  • Anonymous

    In my humble opinion, I think you’re right! And I bet your first thought was to encourage KVM1985 was that he was not lame. Very cool.

  • Anonymous

    Now maybe this is my favorite comparison! Especially Mott as Irreplaceable.

  • Bizarro results on the wines, wine is a dangerous game but being a CKC the worst loss I can have is like $20.

    QOTD: Breaking Bad, it's just the best thing on television, I didn't choose it to be my favorite show, the show has the chops to put my butt in the seat

  • Robby Mac

    Mott = Woodstock
    Gary = Lollapalooza

  • Julius

    Mott = Henry Gupta

    Gary = Eliot Carver

  • Robby Mac

    Your uncle-in-law is pulling your leg brah! Some sites it goes for $34.99. Would you give ANYONE a $2K bottle of ANYTHING??

  • Greg B.

    Big G, I look forward to really getting into St Emillion in the near future. Right now I'm only working on QPR's. lol

    QOTD: Starz's Spartacus Blood and sand

  • Allan

    That Beringer P Reserve probably isn't much better….

  • Gary + Mott = changing the wine business

  • Allan

    Well, not today it would appear!!

  • Allan

    Mott = Dr. Frankenstein +

    Gary = Frankenstein Monster –

    no show today = no changing the wine world, sadly!

  • SQOTD: I've had one. In fact, it was the first serious wine I ever had. It was a plain 2005 Barton & Guestier St. Emillion (gold label). My palate was almost like a virgin back then, but I loved it.

    QOTD: Airing now? House. But I still consider myself a Knight Rider (the original 1982 one) freak. Forever and ever.

  • thaklanksta

    Intersting show! I put two more must try wines on my list. Thanks Gary!

  • thaklanksta

    My favorite show is Rescue me.

  • Like your avatar!

  • Don Simpson

    2005 Bordeaux = Bada$$ and that last wine sounded tasty…

    QOTD: House

    I saw Tabitha from mtv on 60 minutes. She is the wife of author Michael Lewis who just wrote about the financial ruin we’re going through. She’s still cute.

  • Don Simpson

    That was HILARIOUS in the Office.

  • castello

    huh?

  • Anonymous

    You are correct sir. I just didn’t say it very well. TX.

  • SQOTD: I was a teacher in France in 2006. My colleagues turned me onto your show before we toured Bordeax, and we watched back episodes for months before heading out to St. Emillion, tasted lots of fantastic wine there, but the real kicker was tasting 2003, 2004 and 2005 Chateau Angelus and touring their facility. Really top stuff, especially the 2004; but too bad, can't get it no 'mo.

    QOTD: Lots of The Office, especially the original which airs on Cartoon Network. You should have Ricky Gervais on your show, two big personalities would destroy ratings!
