Right back in the zone with this episode – the distinction between ‘real’ wine and that created in the lab is such an important subject and GV is on point with his argument. Oh and a hilarious hand gesture at 6.12 adds to the enjoyment

  • I've been feeling the '08 Stump Jump Shiraz. Tons of great deals here in the DC/Northern VA area at various stores for about $9.99.

  • dcrob

what Austrian rieslings are you getting into? I always get way priced out of Austria..

Great interview! Will look for this for springtime.

  • slimdogny

I liked the Red/White pointing mismatch. We are all human, I think, and this goes to genuine AWESOME authenticity of the GV experience. Also…did I hear MJ's Beat It on in the background?

QOTD: Evodia Garnacha and Alto Almanzora Este. Both Aweome values and good drinkers. Have about a 1/2 case of each left. Have been drinking some QPR CDRs lately, but I can't remember the names at the moment. also been liking New World Cote Rotie/northern rhone blends with the viognier cofermentation. silky, floral, yum.

  • RobbEason

I'm drinking and loving d'Arenberg's '07 Hermit Crab. It's just awesome – Viognier and Marsanne. It's such a winner of a white.

    Folks just give you wine?

  • Anonymous

    Speak engrish please

  • Anonymous

I disagree, GV does lots of strange low volume wines. Where can you get a deal on Duckhorn?

  • Anonymous

Maybe G can get us a cindy offer for $119.02!

  • Richie

I usually try new stuff if I buy in a store.

  • Congratulations!…sounds like an awesome trip. Good job, it took me a few years to get my wife to start drinking wine…and it is like a fountain of youth.

  • I agree, bad choco covered cherries are one thing, but the real deal is something else altogether. Can always just get great quality dark chocolate, and some nice dried cherries.

  • Lvine

I drink a lot of wine from Chile and lately I've been reviewing technical sheets online to find out how much residual sugar, total acidity, alcohol %, etc. they contain. To my surprise, many of them have well over the 2 or 2.5 g/l that I thought was “normal” for dry wines…most seem to be in the 3 g/l and some up to 5.7!! Normally the total acidity is higher than the RS, which leads me to beleive that could balance it out, but I have my doubts. Additionally, some of these have alcohol contents into the 15% range. What does all this mean? Am I drinking bad, unbalanced wine?

QOTD: My go to wines from Chile are Oveja Negra Cab Franc/Carmenere or Sauv Blanc/Carmenere, or anything Chocalán.

  • GV, My wife and I have been digging a 2008 Cabernet called Root: 1, from Colchagua Valley, Chile. Good stuff!

  • biggerb1

I just keep buying the Louis M Martini 2007 Cab. My wife and I actually held a blind tasting with the Louis M Martini 07' Cab and a Chateau Montelena 01' Cab. You could tell one of the wines was older, and had mellowed out, but the taste profiles for me were almost exactly the same. I was very surprised. Fun experiment though. Inspired by Mr. Vay-ner-chuck. The Bonus is that the Louis Martini is < 20$.

  • DCaragher

GV – Nice fondle…haha! Let keep it PG!

QOTD: I am liking the Portugese Charumba red and the Borsao Campos garnacha/temprinillo!

    DIG IT…OUT!

QotD: Orphelin, nice little red blend

  • Robby Mac

Fisticuffs '07 Napa Cab. Little known fact: made with the same fruit that goes into Hourglass.

  • pacw808

Oh yes, my favorite QPR white is the Saint M Riesling! My go to wine!

QOTD: 2007 Domaine Saint Anne Villages, a “Rhone ranger”

  • Ken

Too bad about the Urban Uco blend. There is another nice blend under the Urban Uco label that you, unfortunately, are not carrying – the Urban Uco Red Blend Maule Valley. It is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Carignan with no “fakey” candy fruit or Starburst action.

QOTD: '05 & '07 Rhones. Also, a killet Syrah that I have recently found and usually sells in the $10 to $13 range depending on the market – the '07 La Bastide (Guilhem Durand) Syrah. It is from the Languedoc and is 100% Syrah and is just killer for the $. I am also still loving the '07 Domaine La Garrigue CdR – also killer. I recently bought a few bottles of of Loma Gorda from WL that I also like and wish that I would have bought more of. It isn't much right out of the bottle but let breathe for a few hours and it sings. It is even better the next day.

  • BillyClyde

Love the QOTD. Been enjoying seeing what all the Vayniacs are drinking regularly. I even wrote some down for future purchase that looked intriguing

  • KSig

OK show, not my fave but certainly not bad. Not really any particular wine that I'm buying these days, more focused on styles and regions (and of course Cindy Wine, which is the bane of my bank account!) I went through a very fruit-focused phase where I was buying a lot of Rhones, Australians, and Cali merlots. Now swung back over to heavy tannins and big structure, so looking at left-bank Bordeaux, Spain, and Northern Italy. Also, discovered the lower-end Chateau Musar wine from Lebanon, called Hochar – really interesting! A slightly oxidized flavor that made me think of a dry tawny port. Anyway, worth checking out.

  • jsums

I HATE the fakey-fake wines, especially when they're oaked into submission as well. Glad you have the stones to tell it how it is. QOTD – Santa Rita “Medalla Real” Cab Sauv Maipo 2006. What an awesome freakshow of a wine…and I'm not even a big Cab-Sauv-Head. Full ripe rich fruit, but with loads of deliciously herbacious tannins and balancing acidity(maybe that's the big Cab-Franc-Head in me talking). I've gone through at least a case of this badboy…and it's evolving beautifully as time goes by. A total steal at $15 from K&L: http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1044369 I'd love you to try it and see what you think. Oh, yeah, and Chile needs the love right now anyway.

  • biggerb1

You got it man. My name is Brian so a few of my buddies gave me the nick name, probably around the time we were listening to Quality Control constantly. Good album!

GV- Long overdue comment, sorry it's been wayyyy busy in my world.

QOTD:Currently in command of my “pal”- Essay-chenin/viognier, Caserillo de Diablo-chilean carmenere, & 06 Jean Louis Chave Offerus St. Joeseph

  • Neil

QOTD: Nippozanno Chianti Riserva – good bang for the buck. There's also a crisp white from Gascony which I won't name because then everybody would try it and then the pricing would increase and availability would decrease proportionately. My secret. Not telling.

  • Candy Y.

Hello everyone, I am new HERE. Yeiii my first comment and I am a follower of you Mr. GV.

“ahh, I' m glad you mentioned the faky aspect of this vino…i had a few weeks ago and drank some, but right away i knew i will not be buying it again. It's a good price for a 1 try”
    Candy,

I just ordered a couple of these. Sounds right up my alley and I can go by K and L soon. Here's to Chile.

Gary do you remember what a breath of fresh air Australian Chardonnays where when they first started to break through. I still remember the first decent one I tried must be nearly 30 yrs ago. Tropical, hibiscus notes that still live in the memory.

  • maxinvegas

QOTD: My go to wine is Boutari Moscofilero, love it after a long night of work. Or it is my new hidden gem, Casamatta by Bibi Graetz, one of my favorite producers in Italy.

  • jayhays

Hey everybody, I've been a lurker for a few years (wow) and figured I'd jump in the mix today. After taking a honeymoon to BA in 2008, malbec's have had a special place in my heart. It's hard to forget drinking a top dollar bottle, and eating a cut of meat the size of your head. Sadly, I'm afraid its a grape thats been infiltrated by a bunch of imposters lately.

QOTD: I just left behind my CKC designation in the past few years, but my checking account hasn't really noticed — so, I've been sticking with wines that give me a lot of value. My favorite for the past 6 months has been Finca Luzon. A Spanish Jumilla blend of mostly Monastrell. I know Jumilla gets a bad rap from some critics, but I've been able to get it for less than $8 and I really love the Spanish wines right now. They dont taste fake or overly jammy, like a lot of Aussie and US borne wines in the same price range. I have probably have bought about 2 cases for my wife and I over time.

    later!

  • Nice little show…too bad about the Malbec blend, but as you say, it could be an example of the stuff that is riding in on the coattails of others. Sounds like my kind of Chard though. More nerd grapes please…

QOTD: In a buying pause right now: have a lot of stuff we bottled months ago, that needs to be “tested”, budgeting for Chilean wine grapes at the end of April, and cold hardy vines the month after that. Last mixed case was predominately one we found this winter and liked, a Librandi Ciro Rosso – Galioppo from Calabria. Also got on the Bonny Doon mailing list DEWN club to give it a try, after our recent dinner with Randall Grahm. Just got the go ahead to post some video from the evening, including his reading from “The pHs of Romanee County”, one of the parodies in his recently released book.

    Hi !
Yes, I am not very original when it comes down to this question. Rhone 2007,right now Lirac (Lafond Roc-Epine 2007) 2 stars in the Hachette wineguide at 8 euros, which is pocket change for this super wine.
    Love,
    Seb

  • Tom

QOTD: I love Costco. I make the trip every two weeks and always come back with an armfull of vino.

  • Cristian M.

The URBAN blend you are talking about is from the same winery, Ortega Fournier, but made in Chile instead of Argentina. By the way, Carignan (that was almost forgotten for decades in Chile) is being rediscovered for blends (usually at least 60% Carignan). Most of the Carignan vines of Maule (specially the ones from Loncomilla valley) are more than a 50 years old. I have tried some from Viña Morande, Miguel Torres (Cordillera) and Gillmore… great stuff.

  • Cristian M.

I tried the 05 vintage and was very nice. Gret to know the '08 is good too.

  • Juan

QOTD: http://www.emiliana.cl/our-wines/organics/adobe… i usually buy the cabernet.

Well I live in Finland where we have the liquor monopoly so it’s very limited but at the moment we have the basic rieslings from Gobelsburg and Steininger which are both nice. Especially Steininger, for some reason they are selling for pretty close the same price as in Austria. Domäne Wachau is great too. Also Bründlmayer’s single vineyard rieslings are very nice, if you can find them. Of course more expensive but then again I think that the quality is very high

  • Bill_Murray

    QOTD: 2004 Brunello

  • missatiejacket

Hah! sounds about right … (Jay Miller's score)-10=(reasonable score)
I'm not stuck on anything. Categorically, I find myself buying a lot of French and Italian wines, but it's been that way for quite some time.

  • missatiejacket

Regardless of what you think is happening with the Euro, the 2004 Barolos will disappear fast, and if you like or want to experiment with the category, this is a good vintage to start with. Of course, don't open them for a few years.

  • O'Shea

Loved the hand gesture. Isn?t the subconscious great?

Boy that sounds good! And all the stuff I like to eat.

    Thanks for sharing the recipe.

  • DAveAll

    Malbec Alamos http://jerichowine.com/item.asp?PID=1003
BJs for like $7.xx it's really my go to wine. I've drank a case in the past 2 months and stocked another case in the closet.
