90/100

Right back in the zone with this episode – the distinction between ‘real’ wine and that created in the lab is such an important subject and GV is on point with his argument. Oh and a hilarious hand gesture at 6.12 adds to the enjoyment

  • Mauricio_Fernandes

    I?m back GV!!

The wedding and the honeymoon were AWESOME!

Been to many great places in this last month in Europe, great wines too:

In Rome (http://www.gusto.it) , in Florence (http://www.bucalapi.com) , in Paris (Le Atelier http://www.joel-robuchon.com) and a couple glasses of Champagne on Eiffel tower?s summit, in Barcelona ( Monvínic http://www.monvinic.com ? – Is THE place for wine nerds in BCN! Awesome!) and in Lisbon a great dinner served by our friends Roberta Páscoa Ferreira and Rui Ferreira (Great Bacalhau Rui and Beta, thanks!!!), all great in their own styles.

Even my wife started to drink wine with me on the trip!

QOTD: I brought home a load of nice wines. From Florence: Castello di Ama 2005 and Fontodi Flacianello 2006. From Paris a CDP Vieux Telegraphe 2007. In Barcelona I had a Atteca 2007 that was very good, and bought a Carmelo Rodero Vinas de Valtarrena 2005. (http://www.bodegasrodero.com/vino6.html) . In Lisbon I got a value, a Niepoort Redoma 2006.

Missed WLTV, but everything was a dream?

  • Yes these episodes are fun…keep them going. Got to razz you on the chocolate covered cherries, I love eating those…maybe you haven't had a good brand. Also go with the dark chocolate vs the milk.

QOTD: Honestly not much, I'm trying to drink up so I can make room to buy more and stock up on the 2007 CA reds.

  • JohnsGSD

I hear you on the chocolate covered cherries G. Bleh.

So as I was watching this, I was having a flashback. I swore you had a wine by Urban before. Sure enough, episode 373, you tasted (and hated!) the 2004 Urban Oak (100% tempranillo), which was also rated 90 pts. by Jay Miller (you rated that one 85, then 79 pts.).

QOTD: I've been on a wine-buying moratorium. Call it a holding pattern. I did buy a few 6 packs of 08 Bordeaux futures last year. I've got my eye on some 07 Rhones I haven't pulled the trigger on yet. I'm curious to see where the 09 Bordeaux come in quality & price-wise. And if they come in too high (which they probably will), I'll load up on earlier vintages and the Rhones.

    Thanks G!

    John D.

  • Baylor? Come on…..

  • Jones rogers

Well one out of two isn't that bad. I have had a couple of those fake tasting wines lately, what a waste of time and money.

QOTD; I have been getting Barnard Griffin cab/merlot and at 8 bones a great value. Good everyday wine

  • ONUMello

QOTD: Usually anything with tempranillo, actually. I had added that wine to my wishlist for the next time I place an order. I'll probably remove it now, tho it's still tempting, personally.

  • Don Simpson

Ok… I'm confused… Gary, I thought you didn't review wines that you heavily stocked at Wine Library. My understanding was you only reviewed wines you carried in limited quantity at Wine Library. What am I missing here?

    Gary,
Please don't condemn all chocolate covered cherries based on the insipid milk chocolate ones with sugar cream in the bottom that you see in every drug store out there. High cocao(sp?) count dark covered cherries with all liquid centers are the bomb.

QOTD: I've been buying some CA zins, primarily for my wife who loves them. For me, I've been wheedling some outstanding cabs from board members that have allocations. I just scored a bottle of Scarecrow and 2 Quilceda Creeks!

Yea… great format. Of course I want to see popular wines!

If I am not tasting new wines, which is pretty rare, and I just want cheaper, decent wine to drink, I pick-up Marcus James Riesling and Merlot, both about 9 bucks for 1.5L, and Frontera Carmenere about 10 bucks for 1.5L.

    Thanks again. Great show.

  • Kyle

We carry the Barth Rosé Sekt, by-the-glass at our wine bar. Assuming you know san diego (trulyfinewine tipped me off). Definitely come check us out http://www.redvelvetwinebar.com. In little italy. Prost.

  • ilbee

There are two many great wines out there for me to be buying several bottles of the same! let's just generalize and say Austrian rieslings (unbelievable values) and Tuscan reds

  • MarcBelgium

Strange, bad wine sells good. Is it because of the price? (we drink wine and it's almost cheaper than water). I don't know.

    QOTD.
    For daily use

  • Hey Gary,

First show I've watched in 4 weeks – Sorry dude been flat out working & hustling….Back watching now!! Great show – Redbank is a very well respected winery here in Victoria. They make a great Pinot Gris.

qotd – I work at Dan Murphys – Australia's biggest wine retailer, as FINE WINE MANAGER – And I've been buying heaps of Michel Chapoutier Rhone Blends – $12.50 – $20 AU – Chapoutier has a great range of 06 & 07 blends that blow my mind with there quality. Cheers Sam

  • castello

Sounds like a great trip! Monvinic looks waaaay far out! Where is it and what is BCN?
You didn't miss much on wltv. Just some maniac yakin about wine and stuff 😉

  • Altboy97

Its a shame Victoria wines get lumped in with other Aussie wine, esp McCl Vail and Barossa. The climate is much cooler. I got to go there a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. Lots of Pinot and whites. Almost no Shiraz, even though that's what really sells in Aus.

  • JerseyJohn

Good show Gary. Believe or not I haven't had a single good malbec experience.

QOTD: Just re-tasted and re-discovered the red wine that made me fall in love with red wines in the first place: the Tarara Reserve Merlot. Yup, it's a Merlot from Virginia! So smooth and velvety… Here's the link: http://store.tarara-store.com/reservewine.html

  • BillyClyde

In honor of the great Davy Crockett we'll be drinking a bottle of Fess Parker riesling later today.

Liked the most popular wines show. Nice to know what the WL shoppers are buying a lot of. More please.

QOTD – a lot of torrontes and vendelho (you say vendejo I say vendehlo) lately. Latest was Stump Jump vendelho.
Used to be a lot of chards and rieslings but GV's badgering has worked! Every buy now seems to include varietals I've not tried before. Thanks GV for opening my eyes…and palate

Ohio over Georgetown? Wow. Gotta love March Madness

  • notTheFalseD

QOTD – I'm all over the Gigondas… but white wine season is coming, so there may be a slow shift from that toward Viognier, a varietal I've found I really like. That and German Rieslings. I have yet to memorize all the different types (Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese, etc.) in order.

  • notTheFalseD

Yep, the '07 Cotes-du-Rhone from Chapoutier was outstanding! Imho, that is. Can you say anything about their Crozes-Hermitage? I've spotted it at a couple of retailers, and am on the cusp of buying one…

  • Gary, your flavor discrips are great. So many chars are unbalanced.
Tomato Mozzarella and Olive Cocktail Skewers

This is a very colorful appetizer, simple to prepare and loaded with flavor great with a good Chard!

QOTD Dancing Bull 06 Cab and 2007 McManis Family Vineyards Cab

    Ingredients

4 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese (small balls, if available)
    16 grape tomatoes
    16 kalamata olives, pitted
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
    1 teaspoon minced garlic
    1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
    1/8 teaspoon salt
    1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 dash crushed red pepper flakes
    32 small fresh basil leaves
    16 wooden skewers (4-6 inch)

    Directions

    1. Cut the mozzarella into bite sized pieces. If you are lucky enough to find the small balls, keep them whole. Place in a medium bowl and stir in the tomatoes, olives, oil, garlic, thyme, salt, pepper and red pepper. Cover and refrigerate 1-3 hours. 2. If basil leaves are large, cut into smaller pieces. 3. Thread the marinated cheese, tomatoes and olives onto skewers, placing the basil leaves in between. Place skewers on a platter; garnish with additional fresh basil. Enjoy!

  • Still recovering from the Microwave skittle experiment. And I completely understand the “artificial” hand gesture. ( @ ) ( @ ) = )

  • theDude

I am all about VALUE man!!! Unless its a very special occasion or I'm trying to impress someone (which is never!), I am all over wines that are UNDER $25. I drink a LOT of wine and I live in the middle of nowhere. Therefore, I order a big percentage of what I drink.

QOTD: I'm shifting from big heavy reds to more whites. Was never into sparkling wines but always include one or two now when I'm buying. Also discovering some great dry Rieslings. My wife is just getting into wine and she is loving Beaujolais.

  • theDude

I just bought a Stump Jump Shiraz based on recommendation but haven't tried it yet.

The trny looks like its going to be crazy this year based on yesterdays games. My bracket is already dead with Georgetown, Vandy and Marquette going down first round! Who'd of thunk it.
