Right back in the zone with this episode – the distinction between ‘real’ wine and that created in the lab is such an important subject and GV is on point with his argument. Oh and a hilarious hand gesture at 6.12 adds to the enjoyment

    Gary!!
thnx for everything you do on WLTV, it rocks almost always. And that's thunder for ya!

  • So far you are ok with Baylor. I have them in the FF so I'm rooting for them too.

My only loss today was ODU beating ND. Bums

Good show, I thought the Urban would show better. Maybe a good red for 1st timers?

    QOTD: http://www.kingestate.com/wine/#acrobat

I had this the other night at dinner and went right to WL and could not find it. Had to go elsewhere. 🙁

    Cheers and Go Terps!

  • P.S. Don't worry, we know what your mind was thinking when your hands were groping something “fake.” 🙂

  • GLrocks

I had Urban at a friends house awhile back we did not even finish our glasses. total crap.
Hundred Tree Hill I have had before and enjoyed do on a hot day….not blown away.
QOTD: I enjoy finding the low production wines out there that deserve a taste and a voice and of course they are domestic wines. Capiaux Pinot's , Sausal Zins Chard from Sonoma, as well Rocchioli, Mason Sauv Blanc, Duckhorn has some great deals right now
I wish you would do same . Seems you always focus on large volume labels/brands….sad.
    I will keep watching though

Good episode, enjoyed the knowledge as always. Little down today, my hero of youth died. Davy Crockett (Fess Parker) was my hero first last and always.

QOTD – Enjoying another Malbec, Dona Paulo and a Merlot from Chile Santa Ema, nothing over the top, just good solid wines (for me at any rate).

  • Chilemily

    Great show. Short but sweet!

QOTD: The wine I can't get enough of is Tabalí Sauvignon Blanc 2009 from Chile..and I noticed a while back it's available at Wine Library!

Also, other good Sauvignon Blanca are Casas del Bosque Reserva 2009 and Maycas de Limarí 2007/2008 both from Chile!

<Hey Gary If you want to try some decent australian chardonay; Go West young man. Yeah I know you bombed out with the Cape Mentelle and I agree also its not my style.
Try Voyager Estate, Devils Lair, Howard Park for starters. For something special Pierro or Leeuwin Estate. Thats where good aussie chardonay is at, not this 100 something BS.
Oh by the way Leeuwin only do Chardonay really well…. Try the Voyager Cab merlot instead
    Cheers

  • Goats do Roam, Goat Door, Goat Roti, Bored Doe, The Goatfather – Charles Back, the winemaker at So. Africa's Fairview, has a way with puns and making good, inexpensive wines even including the cost of shipping to the US. He actually has a goat tower in front of his winery – a fun place to visit. I was there in 1999 and carried home a bottle of Goats do Roam, only to find it in Cost Plus for $6. I'm finding So. African wines to be getting better and better as to QPR. How do SAfr, Chile and Argentina do it? (Well, maybe not with tempranillo/malbec.)

  • A few varietals of Santa Rita 120 from Chile…bought thanks to the friendly price. So thrilled that I have the urge to drink white again now that it's warming up here in Boston!

Great show GV, unfortunately it looks like the Oz Chard you reviewed isn't actually available in Oz! Wine-Searcher came up with 0 hits…

QOTD: I'm buying a lot of the Louis Bernard 2007 Cotes du Rhone. With Guigal '05 Cotes du Rhone selling for $20+ the Louis Bernard is a great deal in Australia for $12.

  • M_Woolley

qotd: I'm really into the 2006 lemelson thea's selection pinot. I got it at $20 ($38 release price). I see the 07 is $24 at another NJ wine shop. I tried the 06 because it fit my criteria for buying wine. Choose the 89 point wines. They are always cheaper than the 90 pointers and they last longer on the store shelf so you can get more. Happiness is seeing the WS and parker give wines I like an 89. Cheers!

  • PayneTrayne

QOTD: Buying alot of French wines, looking to the Rhone Valley and Bordeaux. Ups to the old world!

BTW, Anyone know of any Bordeaux winemaker that is still using malbec in their blends?

  • Anonymous

Oh Yeah! Like me sum Turley! LOL :o)
..and true about the less expensive Turleys…

  • scottEJ

Your Cindy team made it thru. Mine (UTEP) did not. Although, I do take issue with yours being a true cindy at a 3.

QOTD: I don't really feel brands as much as I due varietals. I'm just getting over a Rhone kick and I feel a Chard. thing coming on. Probably the change of seasons, but, it is certainly there. I want me some big & buttery. Easy on the oak, but, layers of mango, pineapple, spice, and butter please.

  • QOTD: 2007 Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc Viognier http://bit.ly/anr0TD

  • scottEJ

I was gifted this a few weeks back and thought it was alright. It must have been knowing the person who gifted it, but, I was actually kinda impressed by the wine.

  • agentorange

QOTD: Perrin Reserve Cotes du Rhone. At about 9 bucks a bottle, it's just a great food wine on a week night.

QOTD: I'm all about the Spanish Rioja region right now. They “got it goin on, man.” Or, if I may, “their shizzle is the hizzle.”

My favorite so far is the 2001 Montecillo Gran Reserva. Made from Tempranillo, well-made and very drinkable.

I'm all about the whole 'expanding your palate' thing and seeing what all is out there in the wine world. Because of that, up until now I have never bought more than one bottle of the same wine. Every time I go shopping I try something new that I've never had before. But, I have recently returned from a trip to Spain and while I was there I loaded up on this Montecillo. I like it quite a bit.

Gary,I have to give you props on the 05 Domaine de la Butte Mi Penti, the best wine I've had in a while. As in music and food it's the space between the notes that truly make something special and this has that, just gorgeous. Another great one was the 05 Drouhin Cote De Beaune Villages, unbelievable $16 wine. Aglianico, Beaujolais,Oregon 08 Pinot, red Burgundy, Loire valley and discovering Carmenere are what I'm most interested in at the moment. Too many serious wines such as Bordeaux, Brunello and the new world are either over-ripe,too sweet or over oaked to my palate, not bad just kinda boring and heavy-handed. Thanks Parker, Suckling, Laube and Rolland.

  • Loving J. Vidal-Fleury Cotes du Rhone. It has the bang for the buck for me – I love the Rhones, and it kind of plays well with my palate.

    http://www.moraswines.com/shop/J.-Vidal-Fleury-

(first what I came up with, no affiliation, I'm not even from the US). It's 17$ here, unfortuntely, which is not that good deal as 7-10$ range in the US.

It's often compared to Perrin's CdR, which I haven't tried.

  • KVM1985

I like the idea for this show…definitely use it again!

QOTD: I don't remember the last time I bought the same bottle twice. My budget is very limited currently, so I'm really hitting up all of the different wines under $8-10 I can find at specialty wine shops.

  • SamKw

QOTD: As someone who always seeks to expand his palate, it's not often that I go out looking to buy more than one bottle of the same wine at a time, or consider re-buys unless it's really that good. I grabbed a few of Havens Bourriquot (where are you, Bourriquot Slut Club members?) when it was on sale on WL, and I would get more if ever you guys manage to your hands on it again. But I figure the chances of that happening are pretty slim *sigh*

  • I somewhat agree with your malbec assertion, Norton has that oaky overcoating sometimes.

    QOTD: Here http://www.garalysoka.com/diario/2010/3/12/two-

  • thedreamweaver

qotd: i'll tell you what i will not be buying any more of is the malbec that was included in the famous 3 pack for cinderellawine. altitude 1050. i understand that we all have different palates and i am in no way angry about this wine… i am just curious if anyone else found this malbec to be pretty ass average?

  • Nathan L

QOTD: 2007 Mas Champart St Chinian Causse De Bousquet. I NEVER buy more than 3 bottles of a given wine. And it is rare I buy that. I bought 6 bottles of this. It is freakin amazing if you like old world meaty wines. This is like a 95 pointer for me and and $15 at WLeveryone should give it a shot

  • DaveyJohnson

Because of WLTC and Cindy I dont have a standard anymore, you make me try everything. I do really like the Buehler Zin for 17 dollars: http://winelibrary.com/wines/49336-2008+Buehler

  • dianeboles

Saw you on Ted and decided to check out the link to your show, awesome. I like the no BS, get to the point attitude about wine. Its about time that people stopped acting like wine is garbage unless its 100 bucks a pop – I say this because you have scored well priced wines favorably. There's your kudos, here's my question: Doing what I love requires me to fund raise my ass off, Im putting together a wine tasting event to raise money to build a school in Malawi, what do I have to do to get you to come out and tell it like it is at my event? Its in Vegas. . .

  • Wine_Dad

GV, still think the 07 Pesquies Terrasses is the best value in my store, drinking it regularly. But had the 07 Angels' Landing Stag's Leap District Cali. cab tonight with steak tips and got to say, great QPR at $15, not sure how widely available it is.

  • nickgrzenda

QOTD: Dehesa De Rubiales Alaia, great QPR!

  • winelou

QOTD: Jean-Philippe Marchand Burgundies. Very friendly pricing for Burgundy and the guy, who is not a big name negociant, is making excellent wines. His '04s were very good across the range, the '05s are better. Several excellent Gevreys in that vintage.

  • Thnx KVM!

  • Oude Hendrik

No chocolate covered cherries?.. oh, give 'em a sniffy sniff Gary, they are my candy of candies. Conversely, I absolutely hate soda, which is why I never drank champagne. But, as a Wine Libary connoisseur in training, I am now off a major tangent in the field. Trying many varieties (my fave so far is the Heidsieck Monopole Blue Top Primier Cru), and I also very much like the sparkling Vouvray.

  • nitaT

QOTD: i dont buy ! wine.
but tonight I had a folie a deux merlot from california- not a california girl but it was good!

  • mikeyz

qotd: always a go-to fave when the pockets are tight.

I'm drinking some Ste. Michelle Syrah which I got at $9 and I am going to buy some more. It is very good at that price.

  • WineWoman

QOTD: No particular wine, but I am looking for light to medium-bodied reds. Even though I like the fruit, I am interested in more old-world, rustic-styled wines. Also need to stock up on some whites. Been buying some of the Cindy wines. I've been finding that some of the wines from Argentina are engineered to taste too fake. One Susanna Balboa wine with a high percentage of the Bonarda grape tasted like bubble gum and Welch's grape juice.

  • QOTD; Not hot on any one wine, looking for bargains on real thunder.

  • mattgmann

QOTD: Nothing particular; I've been in an exploratory mood lately. There are two wines I've bought multiple times in the last month or so.

One is La Cartuja Priorat 2007. I've mentioned it on here before. $15 priorat that is very good.

The other is Plan Pegau 2007. A table wine made by Domaine Pegau with purchased grapes and rape from the domaine. It's a nice medium bodied rhone table wine that really reminds you of a CDP. It pairs well with a lot of food, drinks easy and is ~$15. A few dollars more than I'd prefer for a wine of this variety, but very well made for what it is.

  • D_Rod

QOTD: I guess it's the biggest single holding I have, but I bought it a few months ago

    http://www.cellartracker.com//wine.asp?iWine=50

    Awesome wine.

P.S. WL is frequently undercut on pricing on Ridge wines. Is this an NJ thing or something?

  • mattgmann

I thik Ste. Michelle has some pretty nice wines at the price point right now. Their dry Riesling and Dry Rose are both mighty nice at under $10

  • QOTD: I've been into the 2009 Cono Sur Chardonnay. I found it affordable and very fresh. Picked up a case of it recently.

  • Sean

Drinking a 1988 Pichon lalande right now, but I am sad to say its an infrequent treat to drink a wine of this age and caliber. I dont really buy the same wines over and over again. There is so much to try, I keep exploring.

  • Artificial Breasts? Is that what you were trying to say. Kind of silicone, elastic band taste. I totally get it. Well thats what I got from the breast squeeze. lol

Great QOTD: I have been changing it up alot lately. Going Local, Southeastern New England. We'll hook up and I'll bring you a few good ones.
