90/100

Right back in the zone with this episode – the distinction between ‘real’ wine and that created in the lab is such an important subject and GV is on point with his argument. Oh and a hilarious hand gesture at 6.12 adds to the enjoyment

QOTD: 2006 Haven's Merlot (2 1/2 cases) A whole lot for me to buy but at $6.99 at K&L too good an everyday wine to pass up.
2008 d'Arenburg Stump Jump Shiraz 1 cs at World Market for $7.19 a bottle.
2007 Pillar Box Red 9 bottles at WM for $7.97 a bottle
All the above are enjoyable everyday wines (for me) and priced right.

  • johnfarrin

Lol, you are rollin' HEAVY if Turley is your everyday wine:) The rest of us mere mortals salute you.

  • Allan

Hey man! Good to see your still alive ; )

Have never had The Stump Jump, but need to try it… Speaking of D'Arenberg..
Have you tried their sweet wine; Sticky Chardonnay? It's an amazing value driven wine, but sweet though. Cheers!

  • Allan

Any good ones among the 10?

  • Double Dog Dare Merlot. I realy like it. Woodbridge Merlot also. It been a Merlot kind of winter…I have been trying many others, with different food and alone. Gary you sure have changed how I look at wines and it IS fun! L8TR

  • ckayakman

Bogle Phantom – it's the wine that taught me there is something beyond “yellowtail” several years ago and I've never looked back.

Almost anything from D'Arenberg, especially “Array's Original”, “The Stump Jump”, and “Hermit Crab”. You could do a great show focussed on just this producer.

Best buy in Cab: Clos Du Bois Andersen Valley

  • viadomitia

One pretty much has to trade a whole skeleton's worth of bones to buy one of those here in BC, Canada, but still worth the price! 6 of them left in the cellar! Will probably get some more before it vanishes.

  • Allan

Dal Forno eh? Have always wanted to try anything he makes. His looks remind me a bit of Tony Soprano ; )

Have you been lucky enough to try his AMARONE?
But hey even his Valpolicella should outclass a boat load of Amarones.

  • winecrazy

Not really….Juvenille is only $20 from them and Old Vines is $25. How can you not buy a few cases. I only get 6 or so of the Single Vinyard wines just to stay on the mailing list. But over all it's not bad at those prices. When I roll like Gary does, then I'll be rolling HEAVY.

“A very clean style on the nose, attractive and a little perfumed, with chalky yellow fruits. The palate has a lovely freshness, elegant yet full, harmonious and full of flavour. Impressive, broad and mouth-filling. This is very good wine. From the 2009 annual Champagne tasting. 16.5-17+/20 (March 2009) “

peter liem from http://www.champagne-guide.net also thought it was the best in the new NV system

QOTD: 2008 Oregon pinot noir and 2005 Bordeaux

  • johnfarrin

Well (PUFF, PUFF) I just received my Kosta Browne allocation yesterday so
    I'm jazzed.

  • laurieinvt

QOTD: Not buying anything heavily these days, wine included, unfortunately.

  • NC_Carl
  • winecrazy

    Oh see….nice!!!! I don't get that…Boo Hoo 🙁

  • Now that it is spring time, I am all about 2008 St. Innocent Pinot Gris. Crazy palate and just down right delicious!!!

  • johnfarrin

Hey, you could have gotten on their wait list 5 YEARS ago and had yours 🙂

  • lovanc

I think that the idea of what's selling show is great. Maybe you can drop your less than 10 cases rule once a week and do something like this. It would be great to see more wines that are more easily available.

  • Have you tried the Cab from 3D? Not the best…

  • If I may recommend, if you like the Kaiken, also try Flechas de los Andes Gran Malbec. BIG BIG BIG Malbec. 92 Points, Advocate, under $20… something you might have to decant!

  • One more thing, if you are gonna rate the Malbec/Temp 80 Points and tell it to a Giants fan, call it a “Phil McConkey.”

  • castello

Tx. It's in the shopping cart….can I pull the tttrigggger??

  • Allan

    Mott Rules!!

I think I just had deja vous… When I saw the Washington Merlot episode there were 67 comments and when I came back today for the Popular Picks ep… 67 comments. Weird…

I would, personally. Their style is medium to full bodied. Nice comparison to something like phillipponant royale reserve. 43 is about what I was paying for the 732 til the wonderful NC wine merchants jacked the price up to 60s…

  • I've been digging on this cute little red blend from South Africa called Goats Du Rhome. It's pretty tasty for an everyday drinker, and at 8.99 it's affordable as hell. Last night though, I opened a bottle and it was a sulfur bomb….first time it's ever been anything but smooth and tasty. Guess I just got a bad bottle….end of the tank or something, and just got the tails. I didn't think to try the penny trick…if I ever get another one, I'll test it out.

  • drt999

QOTD — nada at the moment; but next month, the local 2009 Rieslings should start being released, and 09 looks like a good year for it!

  • Allan

Agreed with you! It's a definitive steal…. But i have to correct you; it's called: Goats Du Roam ; )

And do try their Goat Roti. Cheers!

  • Allan

I knew you would do that! Hehehe ; )

  • Matt

QOTD: Huet, Le Haut-Lieu Vouvray 2007. Lot of Chenin these days.

  • Allan

The swede has left the building, and gone to bed : (

  • Vay-ku

    Hand pick-ted…hand picked,
    Nuked skittles, Argentina.
    Aussies win this round.

QOTD: Chateau Greysac 2005 Bordeaux for $13 at a Harris Teeter supermarket.

  • PurpleGrillz

QOTD I'll break down my buys into $ categories, these are wines I buy by the case

under $10 2007 Bogle Petit Sirah
    under $20 2006 Sebastiani Cab
under $30 2007 Alto Moncayo Veraton
under $40 2006 Alto Moncayo Alto Moncayo or 2007 Clio
    under $60 2006 Clio or 2007 Caymus
Anything over is a one off splurge or investigation
As far as whites, my wife loves the Talbott line and I only buy value Spanish sparklers and Prosecco in bulk.

  • dsallen

QOTD: I try something new each time I go to the store. I haven't been blown away by anything in particular, lately.

  • winebiker

QOTD – Bogle Merlot. Good friendly red that most newbies to red enjoy. Also good when cooking dinner or during the afternoon.

  • Allan

    YEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWW!

    Whatever happend to…. you know!

  • drew82

Trying to get different things each time. Barbera is always on my mind though. And since I had a FANTASTIC Burgundy for my birthday a while back, I've been fiending for it as well.

  • lurker_no_more
  • flavasauce

Hahahah the fakey fruit hand gesture and then the surprised look on your face was priceless!

    QOTD: Benaza Mencia Monterrei
It reminds me of pastrami on rye with thousand island dressing and some vibrant red berries.

  • Britt

QOTD 2008 Fontanafredda Briccotondo Barbera an amazing wine for 10 bones!

  • Not a bad showing for Australia. I had seen Urban Uco before, but chose not to buy it…guess I was right not to. My online bracket didn't save right…I'm a little miffed. At least Baylor did win their match.

QOTD: Like DSallen, I've been trying mostly affordable wine I never tried, since I'm back in school. Otherwise, below are the two my wife and I usually picked up.

    Twisted River Late Harvest Riesling
    Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano D'abruzzo Riserva

  • I think the theme is pretty cool, for trying wines that people are heavily buying
QOTD: not stuck on any single wine, I buy somethin different every time

  • Gary, the malbec that we love to get is the 2005 Christine Andrews Malbec. Its just got a nice body, pallet, and the price is nice.

We are loving the “Moscato D'Asti” By CA.I.VI.P. Spa Steffono Belbo, Italia
Imported by Maddalena Brands (Stefono Roboli-San Antonio Winery) Los Angeles, CA.
They move cases a day at San Antonio. It's a Good Semi-Sparkling White and sells for Just $8.75. They have a Red version as well called “Stella Rosa”.

  • Allan

    Agreed!

  • Warren

My two favorite wines right now:

Cline Cashmere: this stuff is inexpensive but could pass for more expensive wine
    and
Francis Copola Diamond label Claret: my favorite everyday wine. Easy to drink and I've only had one bottle that tasted like a cork. Actually, it was this wine that introduced me to the taste of a cork…

  • Allan

FC's Diamond label is a good range of wines… like them very much myself. Cashmere…. that does sound expensive. Cheers!
