88/100

line of the day – ‘this wine had a good fourth quarter…it was getting ugly there for a second’

pretty lacklustre wines and no Mott…not really a winning combination

I would not wish this wine on my worst enemy. 57 points.

What cellar video. Dave, Link it up!

  • theDude

How about a “Sniffy Sniff McGee” T-Shirt

  • castello

    number one!

  • wesleymcallister

QOTD: I had a 2008 Tokaji Sargamuskotaly. It was my first non desert wine from Tokaji and it rocked.

  • Kayla28

    HI!

  • Kayla28

  • Kayla28

    read more comments Gary!!!

  • QOTD #1: I've had a couple but not psyched about any of them.

Good show. Too bad the wines didn't exactly shine.

QOTD #2: I had some great stuff this weekend. Pouring at the winery all weekend some took home some really good leftovers… 🙂 DeLille Cellars Chaluer Estate Red, Harrison Hill, and Doyenne Roussanne. Beyond that, a couple of champagnes that I was lucky enough to share with a super cool chick. Drappier (yellow label, can't remember the designation they have for that one) and the Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve. The Drappier KILLED me! The nose was unreal and now I'm hooked on the bubbles.

Something I have to think that you (GV) would appreciate is that we are having a VERY special guest for a private tasting tonight at the winery… the MLB staple for close to 20 years, Chile Davis. Pretty pumped to meet him and share the wines.

  • castello

Never had one that I know of. Had the Venus last night and it was great with dinner but felt a lttle sour without food.

  • castello

    read them live!

  • castello

    compared to what?

  • A dumb Rhein king

lol. That reminded me of your last baseball card gum experience.

QOTD1: None. Not that I've ever avoided them though. There's just so much to taste and so little time.

    QOTD2: I'd totally be down.

QOTD3: Nothing great. I had a Granche that was 5.50$. It had some pretty good tannins, but it was too fake fruit tasting and AC. It kind of reminded me of the Shiraz three buck chuck. I'd mark it paz even at that price point. If I had to score it from memory, I would say low to mid seventies.

  • johnfarrin

QOTD #1: No, thought you had to have ID 🙂
QOTD #2: 2006 Willowbrook ?DuNah Vineyard? Sonoma Coast Pinot. Sad that it was my last one. Really nice.

  • Altboy97

Absolutely had Kosher wine. Used to live near Oxnard, CA – home of Herzog. They have a very nice restaurant there as well.
The best wine I had over the weekend was the Chard they were pouring at the booksigning at WL. Even at $40, I was very tempted.
I'd love to taste wines for you, maybe I could handle the New Jersey “beat”, I've been to about 30 NJ wineries since I got here 7 months ago.

  • Green_Pea

QOTD; Don Elias Garnacha 2008. A friend gave this to me and it was excellent. Old world style. I tried to find it here but no luck yet. The only place it showed up was BA. GV you would like that stuff and it has a great QPR.

  • Steve

Best wine this week. A 2001 Dievole Dieulele Chianti Reserve. Found it on the wine list at a little restaurant in Flagstaff AZ.

  • SamKw

I'm devastated Cornell got knocked out.

QOTD1: I've had some wines from Bartenura, which I believe is a producer of Italian Kosher wines. They were OK, but not in any way memorable.
QOTD2: A friend of mine invited me to dinner, so I brought along a bottle of Meroi Nestri. Was received pretty well. Interesting stuff, not like any French, Californian or Washingtonian merlots I've had.

  • drt999

    Kosher and no Sasha?
QOTD — a few, inc a kosher Merlot recently
QOTD2 — 2007 Weingut Johannishof Kabinett, a VERY nice wine indeed

  • sugar_land_wineo

QOTD 1: No have never had a Kosher wine that I am aware of.

QOTD 2: Best Wine this weekend: Bianchi 2006 Petite Sirah

  • DanLacher

QOTD #1: Have not to my knowledge tried a Kosher wine. I see is just as another selection of wine and don't see how it has to have a Jewish only play.

QOTD #2: 2006 Chateau Montviel Pomerol from the Christmas secret pack. That was an amazing wine that I can't wait to have again.

Finally getting back into the flow of keeping up with the shows.

  • A dumb Rhein king

I found the receipt; it was the Manyana Garnacha.

  • Michael C in MKE

I have had Kosher wines. I don't understand why people are so afraid of them. I had a nice Kosher Rioja last week, but I didn't catch the name.

I look forward to seeing more activity on the Cork'd site.

Read more comments. I guess when you're taping three episodes back to back it would lose it's freshness, but for the days when you tape a new show. I think it's fun.

Best wine I had recently. Mount Eden Pinot Noir

  • QOTD 1: Easy – I've never had a Kosher wine

QOTD 2: Best wine of the weekend: 2005 Artadi Rioja Viñas de Gain

Notwithstanding the slate's being a strikeout (at least by Gary's palate) it was a great show: tight, informative, humorous.

Meh. Meh. Meh. Fitting show for the weather today. QOTD1 – Hmm, don't think so… maybe… or not? QOTD2 – Kunde Estate Cab Sauv, Sonoma '03. Nothing fancy, just good honest un-oak-monstered Sonoma Cab. Drinking perfectly right now. If you pay really close attention, it has a tiny hint of accidental secondary fermentation CO2. Interesting and balanced.

  • jsums

    Agreed. Awesome Kabinett.

  • MarkFitzpatrick

Yes had a kosher wine –

just don't remember which one. do eat a bunch of both organic and kosher certified foods….

AND – would love to have some shows on Organic wines and/or wines that the grower says don't use pesticides (but not certified organic….I know that designation can be costly)

No wine this weekend. My wife 32 weeks pregnant – so I'm respectin'

And….King Kong Bundy – just felt like saying that (watched some old wrastlin')

  • Chilemily

QOTD 1: I've never had kosher wine, but I'll add it to the list!

QOTD 2: Best wine I've had this weekend- it's a toss-up between Tablí Sauvignon Blanc 2008 from the Limarí Valley in Chile and Casa Silva Doña Dominga Syrah 2006 from the Colchagua Vally in Chile as well (I live in Chile).

PS-Still waiting for another Chile show!!

  • jsums

Ooh, nice idea. All domestic sparkler show. Including some North Fork stuff, too! Lieb Cellars makes a killer vintage sparkling Pinot Blanc.

  • wesleymcallister

    Castello you win.

  • johnboston

The second half of the wine is the part I love. Appreciatechya, GV. Welcome back.

  • likosf

QOTD 1: Not yet. I'll look for some at the local wine shop.

QOTD 2: 2008 Domaine Andre Vatan Sancerre “Les Charmes” went well with the Provence food and warm weather in SF this weekend.

  • thejuggler

Finally getting rid of my lurker status! I got into the show a couple of months ago and it's awesome, Gary; I love the show.

QOTD1: The only kosher wine I've had is Manischewitz at Seder and, of course, it tastes like grape juice.
QOTD2: This weekend I tried both the Les Cretes Coteau La Tour and the Altitude Malbec from the 3-pack. I really liked the La Tour, but wasn't impressed with the overwhelming sour cherry from the Altitude. Still very happy with the purchase.

  • XpensiveWino

It would be a WLTV 1st!! Hate coming up with show ideas but someone had to do it. There is more to life than French Champagne and Spanish Cava!

  • dsallen

GV! Love all the info! Great show. Never had a Kosher wine.

QOTD: Norton Bodega Malbec Reserva 2006 for 16 bucks (CKC here). I was not expecting it to be as good as it was!

  • Hugo

That's it! I don't like to read that I suck so I had to stop lurking!

QOTD1: I don't think I ever had a kosher wine, but I'll try to look for some next time I buy some wine.
    QOTD2: No wine this weekend…

  • Beeper

QOTD: Not that I know of

    I already do reviews on Cork'd 😉

QOTD2: Actually had a couple wines this weekend, best was probably the Rias Baixas Albarino.

  • Hypersomnia

Gary, Welcome Back from vacation, happy to see more wines and longer episodes.

QOTD1: I am a non-jew and have had a Kosher Montepulciano d'Abruzzo (2006 Cantina Gabriele Montepulciano d'Abruzzo) before that I thought was pretty good (but not great). I would try other Kosher wines in the future (I don't care if they are Kosher or not as long as they taste good).

QOTD2: The best wine I had this weekend was the 2008 Valreas Cuvee Prestige L'Enclave de Papes Cotes du Rhone Villages ($6.50 at Trader Joe's). It's certainly not spectacular but relatively tasty and I think worth the $6.50 price tag. I also had the 2008 Charles Shaw California Shiraz ($3) and was going to give it a drain pour but my wife liked it enough that we kept it. Those were the only two wines I had this weekend so the Cotes du Rhone Villages not surprisingly won.

  • My best wine this weekend was Asda's Cote du Rhone Village 2007. (Yes we're owned by walmart but we have a master of wine so i'd say that's even) Silly value for money, at under £5, that's about $8 or something. Rich, fruity and good structure, I'm pleased when this happens.

As non of you that I know of (regular commenters anyway) are English you can't get it so i'm not selling it.

    – just read hypersomnia's comment, who doesn't love the Rhone!?

Just watched merlove as well, amazing and mondovino before that. It really expressed that rubbish about making 'the worlds best wine' why can't it just be good for itself, loved both those movies for that and hopefully more people will listen.

  • wesleymcallister

Tonight will be my first Kosher wine. I am going to do the classic Manischewitz.

  • mikeyz

qotd: drank nothing but 2 buck chuck this weekend. trying to save some cash, but still need my vino. maybe cindy will come through strong tonight…

  • scotty b

QOTD 1: No Kosher wines. Yes, I think there's a perception that they're only for jews.
QOTD 2: Yes, I'd be open to reviewing wines, but I realize you're probably going to choose people with cool screen names like Grape Ape.
QOTD 3: Chappellet Cyril's Cuvee – 90% Merlot, 5% CS, 5% Malbec. Probably too oaky for you GV.

  • guymandude

Nice to see you back! Glad to hear you had a good time.

No never had one, gotta try one though, I must be slipping.

Unfortunately, didn't have a good wine last week.

  • JiminAtlanta

QOTD – I have had several Isreali wines that I believe were kosher. Otherwise probably not. If you include Thursday night I was at a small wine tasting attended by Gary Eberle of Eberle Winery and Jim Clendenon of Au Bon Climat. My favorite was an ABC pinot noir. We were able to try 12 wines from their wineries and talk to the men who made them. I also enjoyed the Eberle rose. It was a fun night with good food and friends too.

  • jeffisrad

    1. Hey Gary! I'm Jewish, but rarely drink kosher wines. I don't know if people think they are only for Jewish people, I think people are more likely to group them in with collage wines like Boon's Farm and Thunderbird.
    2. I've been reviewing wines on Cork'd, but have not in a while. Maybe what I need is a homework assignment from Mr. Vaynerchuk to get me writing again. @JeffisRad
    3. This weekend my uncle took my fiance and I to some wineries in Livermore, CA. The wines were hit-or-miss, but I was stoked to see how many their were. Napa Jr.? What do you think?
