Qotd: Never had a kosher wine
Qotd2: Opened a 1998 Opus One that I have cellared for eight years for our anniversary. My wife gave me ten bottles of wine for our tenth anniversary in 2002 to enjoy over the ten following anniversaries and this one was number eight. The Opus was surprisingly very good for a so-so vintage, huge olivey nose, gentle black currants, light tannins and a long minute and a half finish, delicious! I still have faith in older wines from less heralded vintages now.

  • Phil G

Not Jewish and had Kosher wines before. Hope you had a great trip with Lizzie. And Happy Passover!

QOTD – no wine over the weekend, had a stomach flu during a long vacation weekend in Florida, so that sucked!

  • Jay

    Have a blessed Passover, Gary.

  • Cole

Im pretty sure I've never had a kosher wine. The best wine I had this weekend was a Pichot Vouvray. My new lady friend is new to wine and likes something with a little sweet to it. I think the stuff has some serious complexity for a wine that cost 13 bucks. That vouvray beat out a bottle of Veuve yellow label and a Symmington Altano Douro Portugese red. The Veuve sucked on day 1 but luckily I saved a couple of glasses that were much more enjoyable the second day. Im working on the Altano now and it is really nice.

  • davidemillombard

GV! I'm watching this as Mom & Gammy finish up the final seder cleanup. A little late! Don't worry, the wines we had were pretty haggard too…haa!

Raquel and I had a blast w/ you Sat. Thanks for hookin' it up after we dropped the ball on such a stellar 'cellar' video ; ) I'll email you about some Skype action.

  • dann_in_nh

Happy Pesach to all (that are of this persuasion).
QOTD Best wine this weekend was the '03 Paolo Bea Sagrantino bought @ WL in Jan '08. Everyone around the table agreed with your commentary regarding how good it was. Glad I still have 3 left.

  • Phil G

Oh, and by the way… not enough baseball talk on the Thunder Show. Jets, NCAA Hoops, even Olympic Hockey get their due. GV, you know you were a big Yankee fan growing up and rooted for everybody from Ron Guidry and Don Mattingly to Mel Hall and Matt Nokes. Just because the Yanks got out of their funk through the 1990s doesn't mean you can't keep giving them some love. Maybe time for a little more Yankee pride as opening day approaches? How can you not root for guys like Rivera, Posada and Jeter?

  • ahillsey

No, I feel like non mevushal Kosher wine is overpriced. This weekend, I had 3 great wines 2006 Domaine Serene Evenstad Reserve and 2 single vineyard Condrieus from Francois Villard.

  • Love the tan!!! Yes I've had a kosher wine…never seek them out though and somewhat agree about them being for Jewish people more.

QOTD: Mionetto Prosecco Brut, hint of golden apple, fresh and light, perfect for a Palm Sunday morning!

  • scottEJ

Thanks, G. Good to see you back and glad you got some you time w/the wife. Have a great Passover with the family.

QOTD: Had a Cote du Rhone Kosher a few weeks ago. Not bad. Nothing really memorable.

QOTD: Two killer wines: 1) 2004 Clos Marie, Simon, Pic St. Loup; 2) 2007 Walla Walla Vintners, Cab. Franc. (Notes are in WAYD).

  • abilyeu

    QOTD: Nope, never had one.

  • DaveyJohnson

QOTD1: Dont think i have ever had one
QOTD2: Only had one bottle, Chateau Sol Special…pretty hot the first night, much better the 2nd after it mellowed out

  • RANDINTHECITY

    GARY!!!
    Welcome Back!
    xo
    Happy Passover!
QOTD: Had some Keever Syrah! Was very good!

  • yacochuya

    1. I am a jew, but non-practicing, so passed over passover once again. My last kosher wine may have been Manishevitz when I was 13, but probably had some at a wine tasting since.
    2. Opened bottle of Le Prata Brunello 1999. Has evolved nicely over the years (bought about 30 bottles while living in Italy) and even better than a couple I opened last year.

  • dz

Welcome back Gary, I think that squeezing motion you made must have been a Freudian Slip from your vacation.Over the weekend my wife and I shared a couple of nice Margauxs from the 2000 vintage, d'Angludet and Siran. This vintage while not as concentrated as the 05 always comes through with its drinkability even early on. The d'Angludet has always been an austere wine with little apparent sweetness while the Siran seemed to be slightly more gregarious, both excellent though.

  • gesticulador

GV – Bring back the brown paper bags! Blind tastings are always interesting.

QOTD1: Never had a Kosher wine, but some CKC friends had a strange night with Kosher vodka once.

QOTD2: Sipped some '09 La Yunta Torrontes to ring in the nice-ish weather… liked it a lot better than the '08, and at 8 bucks it's hard to complain. Thanks for the tip.

  • Hey GV long time lurker here. Been in and out on the forums but thought I would jump in here so your analytics would line up!
    1. can't remember ever having a kosher wine, that I know of
    2. open some pretty bad wine over the weekend and nothing brough the thunder, but opened an 03 chateau vignot last weekend which I thought was very good

  • twitch1977

I probably haven't had a glass of wine in 7 years or so, I only found out about this site from watching Gary's talk they posted on TED and I came over here to try and decide if he was charismatic or a douche. Since then I've been tuning in daily to watch the new episodes.

I find it pretty weird that I can get excited about something that I had no interest in previously, I guess that's a real compliment to Gary and it's easy to see why he's so successful. A week ago I couldn't have cared less about wine of any kind, but now a big part of me wants to try some of these out.

Anyways thanks for the vids, they're very entertaining, but please stop saying 'sniffy sniff.'

    Cheers,
    Kurt

  • favorite wine tasted recently was the ZIG ZAG Zin screwtop not sure the vintage but it was delicious and yes im a lurker hope your happy.Ive only comented like 3 times before if that and have probably watched 6 0r 700 shows out of the almost 900 youve done so far.great job as always Gary and Ive told many people to chek it out…

  • calmonte

QOTD: I grew up sneaking sips of kosher wine that SUCKED, now I can't find one I don't consider a rip off, give me a reason to drink one – a good QPR and I'll try one, but these 3 didn't impress.
QOTD 2: a Domaine de Fabregues 2007 le domaine, which was $4.99 a bottle at my local grocery outlet. I went back and bought a case today, typically over rated at a 90 by Wine Spectator, but a very drinkable great deal.

Subject for you to comment on: How do you feel about the Languedoc wine fraud? US govt is now investigating, it put people off Italian wine for a while, at least there isn't antifreeze in the wine, but in Constellation Brands and Gallo can't tell what they're being shipped how can we really trust what's in the bottle. I don't like being cheated or played the fool, if the label says Pinot, there should be pinot in the damn bottle.

  • davidemillombard

And I realized I didn't answer the QOTD: Best wine lately was that Chard Claire was sampling on Sat.

  • kosmik

    Hey GV!
New to your world… good show.
    1) Long time since my last Kosher wine and nothing interesting about it.
    2) Got thunder last weekend from Domaine de Bila-Haut Occultum Lapidem 2007, made from syrah, grenache and carignan. It rocks. Packed and dense but still manages to stay fresh and light. Great value.
    K from Quebec City

  • zrm

GV! Kosher wine tasting without Sasha makes me a bit verklempt (to borrow a phrase)
Side QOD: had a couple once my dad brought them home they were samples I think. He's in the natural food biz.
QOD: Best wine over the weekend was prolly Esprit du Rhone 2005 reserve Cote du Rhone

Gary whatever need on cork'd I'd be glad to help. Tasting wine has been a great escape from the weekly grind stone. Been working on my palate since I first caught WLTV in August

Hope the Vaca was great and that the family time tonight was joyous

  • srdonjulio

    1. had a Cali kosher wine… terrible. I'd have preferred a wine from Baja Cali!
    2. Owen Roe Abbott's Table 2006 always a solid choice.

  • winecrazy

I'm a “Non Jew”….and I have had many Kosher wines….been drinking them for over 25 years now.

    Maybe I should convert….Ach Ha!!!!!

    Happy Passover Homey!!!

  • zrm

Value play Cotes du Rhone! Thats were it was for me this past weekend too

  • FullOnNelson

QOTD1: Yes I've tasted a kosher wine. And I was totally disappointed.
QOTD2: The most interesting wine I had over the weekend was a 2008 Vogelzang Sauvignon Blanc from Santa Ynez. It was aromatic, creamy, with great acid and a killer finish. It made me love SB (Sauvignon Blanc) all over again. I finished the bottle in one evening (why wait until the next day?).
YES! I would love to review wines for you on Cork'd.

QUESTION FOR YOU GARY: What was the best moment during your vacation? Like a quick snapshot.

  • troytee

Nice chalk board propaganda tonight! As a former Lurker I smiled.
QOTD: Caves-De-Lugny “Le Charmes” – Great value, fruit and a nice stoney quality. Meyer lemons came to mind. Nice Maconnais value. What Chard should be like IMPO (in my palate's opinion).
As far as Corkd goes it's nice to see that “back” in play and I would definitely volunteer to be a reviewer.

  • adrums

    Welcome back, GV.
QOTD 1: Just some horrid Manischewitz!
QOTD 2: We had a great weekend of wine tasting up in Woodinville, WA. Checked out the latest releases from Mark Ryan, Januik, and Efeste. The line-up that stole the show, however, was Delille. The dude gave us like 2.5 oz pours which was pretty sweet, albeit somewhat dangerous. The '06 Syrah is a total monster, as is the '07 Aix. The '08 estate blanc was the best white wine I've ever had from WA, and the '07 Chaleur Estate was simply mindblowing followed closely by the Harrison Hill.

  • thrawn1020

QOTD: No Kosher wine, not that I have anything against it.

QOTD: Wellington Vineyards 2007 Marsanne. 2007 Was a great year for small production Sonoma County White wines. Here's hoping the reds can live up to that promise.

Tough week last week. Enjoyed the SXSW guest on Friday, and the two blind shows(where was the promised third one, btw?). Honestly, my opinion at this point is that to maintain daily viewership, if you have to go shorter to get it done, I'd prefer that. Just so WLTV doesn't fall off the radar for me. I prefer the longer, but I like getting home and checking and seeing something new.

See that the guy who wore the paper bag on his head to a NJ Nets game is getting brown bagged lunch tomorrow with someone high up? Thoughts?

At this point, go Michigan State. Big Ten forever. I think they can beat some teams, and surprise a bit. And one can never underestimate Tom Izzo.

  • robbiec

QOD: I had a kosher Moscato once…wasn't bad.

QOD: Had a really nice rose from Bordeaux this weekend. It had an awesome nose of raspberries, strawberries, lemon peel, and really ripe, red, sweet watermelon. It was worth it just for the nose, but it also had a great acidity to it.

It was the 2008 “Les Gauries” Bordeaux-rose for those of you interested…i'm not sure if it's available in the USA.

  • Drew

    QOTD: Taylor's 20 Tawny – just lovely

  • QOTD; 06 Witness Tree Pinot Nior, it brought the thunder.

  • Greek Orthodox so holding off on wine until Pascha (Easter). What do YOU think is a good Easter wine?

  • slave2thevine

Always great to see some Kosher exposure happening…this was a good weekend for me, so it's tough. I'd have to say that it was a tie between the following wines for me this weekend:
1982 Freemark Abbey Johannisberg Riesling Edelwein Gold
    2002 Vincent Girardin Bâtard-Montrachet

  • missatiejacket

I don't think I have ever tasted a kosher wine, and I try to taste a lot of wines. I just don't see it as its own category when it is a qualifier that can be applied to any category. When I am able to taste a group of wines from Israel I'm sure I will try some, but kosher Cava and Port don't really sound like anything different. It's not that I'm opposed to trying them, but I'm not going to pay a bunch of money to mail order any unless I think they'll be better than non kosher wines from the same categories that I can buy locally.

I'd be willing to post some tasting notes for whatever you have in mind. I already sent an email to that effect.

Since you say you'll be reading these comments, here are two ideas I've been mentioning already:

    1. I'd like to see you do some double blind tasting on the show.

    2. I'd like to see an episode dedicated to Madeira with a vintage Madeira included. I think it's getting kind of ridiculous, with all of the obscure categories of wine you've featured, that you haven't done a Madeira show yet. I know WL doesn't carry many, but you have bought wines elsewhere plenty of times before. I think you could go pick up a couple of nice Madeiras and splurge on a good vintage bottling.

  • Agree, my picks were a disaster this weekend. Heck, the entire tourney was a disaster. Duke is still in it? Please

SQTD: Yes, many Kosher wines. Most are quite good.

    QOTD: '08 Acrobat Pinot

    P.S. Go Mountaineers!

  • Gary V. – Happy Passover (and to everyone else who celebrates it as well)!

This is an official un-lurking post. I am another lurker coming in from out of the cold. I started watching you steadily since just before episode 300 and had caught earlier episodes before then. I almost unurked 2 time previously. The first was your Sauternes shows with Doisy Vedrines (still pissed that the battery died before you reviewed the '89 as it's one of my favorites) and the 2nd time was when you had a guest who is a scumbag (but will remain nameless). I live in Chicago now but I am from LI. Over time I have become more and more passionate about wine. Yours is a great little show to geek it up or just enjoy a discourse on wine.

Anyway I look forward to seeing your shows. I figure it's time to give you a long overdue hello and big thanks for doing these shows. They come from the heart and your passion for wine, friends, family (and the Jets) shows through. You may need a little ritalin now and again but you are good peeps.

QOTD early #1 – Yes I have tried Kosher wines including a few non-Manischewitz.
QOTD #2 – Best wine, split between the best wine Piper-Heidsieck (NV) and best QPR (and surprising factor) Columbia Winery Gewurtztraminer 2008.

    Take care,
    GFish (Matt)

    PS – Go JETS !!!

  • Allan

    Again! u on a roll ; )

  • hokiewino

I agree with Dominus, my brackets have been destroyed and I can't believe that Duke made it to the final four, so overrated.

I can't say that I've ever had a kosher wine but I'm kind of intrigued. I also would like to know what would be a good Easter wine that I can bring home to the folks.

QOTD: I had a nice $15 spanish tempranillo this weekend which was a fantastic change to the tisdale shiraz my girlfriend always buys.

  • 🙂 former Lurker 🙂

  • ahhahahahah

  • Cadams THNX BRO!

  • Gary, solid show as usual. When's your next detour in LA? I'd like to meet up with you.

I remember you showing some interest in the South African World Cup, is that still in the plans for you? Is there a team you support?

  • taciturnforsale

There was a point were I was obsessively reading Chaim Potok's work and tried a Manischewitz kosher wine. It tasted like a kids cough syrup.

  • jenna35

qotd #1-yes i have tried kosher wines
qotd #2- i really enjoyed this value wine Evodia Garnacha (would love for it to be on wltv)
    http://winelibrary.com/wines/49664-2008+Evodia+
p.s. Great meeting you at the signing on Saturday, Gary.

  • WineWoman

Sides: Yes, I have tried Kosher wines. Especially enjoyed a Gamla Cab–under 13 bones–could have easily sold well at 20. Also a Chenin Blanc–can't remember the producer.

QOTD: Opened the 2000 Chateau Montpezat. Paired it with stuffed red peppers–green ones might have been a tad better. Also with some Prarie Breeze cheese from Gourmet Lib. Good pairing. Been getting some great products from the GL!!!

  • castello

Love the old yohanisberg stuff. Do any California wineries still make it like they did back then? Or maybe you had a sweet one.?

  • castello

    Duckhorn!

  • WineWoman

Sorry I missed the book signing on Saturday. Had to attend a Dog Show–an equal amount of fun. 🙂 It's Spring Break this week. I will visit the store tomorrow and pick up my wines for Easter.
