line of the day – ‘this wine had a good fourth quarter…it was getting ugly there for a second’

pretty lacklustre wines and no Mott…not really a winning combination

I'm not sure if I'm a lurker, but I have bought allot of wine from you, I have posted comments and have asked a question here and there.

Please drop the Lurkers Suck. I buy wine becasue I love it. I but wine from you because of the education and fun factor, not to be a Gary groupie. Get over yourself

  • invest4business

Maybe I missed it or maybe just generally lame…but what makes a wine Kosher? What distinguishes it other than being accepted as Kosher by a rabbi?

Also, bracket going strong, 780 points on the ESPN.com pool I am in…need West Virginia and Huggy Bear to beat the pretenders from Cameron and I lock up 300 beans to spend on wine!

  • castello

    Lurkers Rule! ; )

  • castello

Sometimes, though not often enough, he says sniffy sniff McGee.

  • Gary, any Rhum discoveries on your vacation?

QOTD #2 I was fortunate to do a pinot noir tasting with a Burgundy freak this weekend. Unfortunately (for my Burg friend) my pick was an Aussie: (what?!) The 1997 Ashton Hills pinot noir reserve was all class. The most geekly label I've seen with the winemaker's degrees listed, kilos per plant for the yields. Great nose, mouthfeel, minerality, very smooth and mellow on the palate, balance, class.

QOTD #1 I haven't had any kosher wine. What is it anyways? Did you explain it on the show? Oops! You're usually good about this so I'll cut you some slack.

Random blending question: Have you, Gary, or anyone out there ever had a wine with the two petits together: verdot and sirah. This would be some serious stuff that I could lay down for my grandkids if it were well made. The label would be kinda kool: PSPV

  • QOTD: Just finished a bottle of 2008 Bila-Haut Rhone Red… it was solid for 13 bones. I liked it!

  • ErieWineGuy

No not Jewish, and no, never had a Kosher wine.

I have so much respect for those of the Jewish faith, that I guess I'd feel a little guilty taking a wine that I thought was meant for them. Kinda silly sounding, isn't it? But probably deep down, that is a thought which at least once, crosses my mind(wow, now the Vayniacs can laugh like crazy and pound the crap out of me!)

I would love to review wines – I've done it to every wine I've ever had. It's a daily thing.

Great show again. Always a treat!

Hope you had a great time on vacation; Hope Mott feels better soon!

  • mattgmann

kosher huh….can't say I've had kosher wine to my knowledge. But I know around thanksgiving kosher coca cola appears on the shelves and it's awesome. I think they use can sugar in it.

  • JC

don't even want to watch this episode. WTF on KOSHER wine?????
you need to figure out who your prime viewers are and what we all want.
also, ditch the Jets garb and spitoon. not that they no longer deserve it, but can't we freshen up the set a bit?? c'mon, it's 2010. if Winelibrary is supposed to be so cutting edge on selection and price, get with the program and look at the show format.
ya gotta keep us interested. i'm not, anymore…..sorry GV.

I think I'm gonna review some older episodes. Got a new espresso machine this evening. I'm about 6 macchiatos deep and starting to twitch. I need some barista experience for sure……but impressed with my first attempts

  • First of all, “Chag Pesach Kasher veSameach!” Not bad for a dumb Corsican. I hope it's correct or Sasha's gonna kick my goy'ish butt. Anyway, I must say I have not tried any Kosher wines but I think I would like to. That's most of my reason for drinking wine. It's the ability to travel all over the world in my own back yard.

QOTD: My girlfriend and I spent Friday night in Stonnington Ct. at the Jonathan Edwards Winery for a barrel tasting. Though the wines are young, the selections were off the hook. He does use a lot of California stock but he definitly knows how to make it sing. If given the chance I would suggest everything especially his 2008 Napa Merlot, the 2008 Cab and his 2007 Zinfandel Port. The Melot and Cab will be in bottles by mid August.

And yes I would love to sample some wines for the Vaynernation, but I am the new kid on the block so I would definitly understand being way down the list. Glad you're back safe and sound. BTW, what exactly is a lurker?

  • Marc

    QOTD: La Cana Albarino 2008.

  • carlo10

    no kosher wine for me

QOTD: primitivo from terre di campo sasso…yum yum

gary, read your book…i am social media hungry. any books you suggest?

  • mattgmann

Best wine of the weekend is a tossup. Nothing great, but 2 stood out from the swill I was surrounded by at a friends house.

Monte Antico Toscana 2006: Nose was lacking, and tannins tight. But after a decant is was pretty awesome for a $10 saniovese.

Bastide de beauvert cotes du rhone 2007: Light-medium bodied and a little thin. What flavor was there was really nice though. Interesting custard component on the nose, and the taste showed some refreshing cherry/crantastic goodness. $10, I'll definitely have this again with food.

  • Ya, gotta say I was missing the “Big Guy” also. Guess we'll have to wait till Shavuot to see him again.

  • sichuanpeppercorn

QOTD L'Ecole 2008 Chenin Blanc Walla Voila

  • I had a Byron Santa Maria Valley 2006 Chardonnay. I liked that. Don't be hating lurkers 😉

  • theDude

G! You are my nemesis!!!! Yes I see the “lurkers suck” and yes I see the ugly gray shirt!!! If you are truly going to impress me you should not have washed that shirt in the last 2 weeks!

QOTD1: I have not had a kosher wine and do not understand why or how it has earned its own category (i understand why its kosher but dont think anyone cares outside of those who are Jewish)

QOTD2: Have tried 3 or 4 wines over the last week and had nothing great. Went to a party last Friday nite with a bunch of duchebags that I can't stand. My bracket sucks. I'm glad its Monday!!!

I'm now only going to bet on a sure thing…………the UConn Women. No one will get within 20!

  • mattgmann

Dude, who's bracket doesn't suck? The only team I have in the final four, Duke, is the only team I wish wasn't there.

My buckeyes ate shit on friday….so, Go Sparty!

  • flavasauce

Welcome back! Glad you and Lizzie got some R&R. QOTD: 2004 La Bolida from Chateau D'or et Geules. A Mourvedre based wine from Costieres de Nimes.

  • Thedude U rock 🙂 lol 2 weeks……..

  • I love Lurkers!

  • gdeciantis

Gary, usually Kosher products have a specific process they go through to make them kosher. What is different in the kosher wine process than regular wine. What can't they do to the wine.

QOTD: Can't drink wine right now. Doctor's orders. 🙁

  • 🙂

  • JC sorry to lose your interest dude. I will try …..but the JETS bucket doesnt go anywhere!

  • Thnx for the Mott wishes, awesome of u!

  • gdeciantis

I don't think I have ever had kosher wine. At least I don't think so. My mom (italian) shops in a jewish store and brings back kosher stuff all the time so I get a lot of kosher cuisine.

  • Larbear I am sorry u think the lurkers thing is a thing that I think makes me cool, I am plenty over myself, I have been since I was 13….The lurker thing is just for fun, kinda inside joke thing, I am sorry it bothered you, I really am

  • theDude

I really don't like Duke so I refused to put them in my Final 4 bracket. Baylor had their chance and blew it!!! Now I have 0, zip, nada in the finals. Its been a fun year to watch but if Duke wins it all I'm going to puke!

  • GYHTBT

Glad to hear that you went OTG. Good for the the soul.

I have not intentionally sought out the “Circle K” wines. A little glad the tasting was underwhelming so I won't be going there anytime soon.

QOTD: Tried 3 new Cabs (1-'06 & 2 '07). All were tiiiiiight and needed a lot of air. All 3 tasted beter the 2nd day. '06 Rocca was good to very good, Match Butterdragon needs a lot more sleepy time. I'd estiimate 2 yrs min. It was very good the next day after another decant. The star was the '07 Keever. Really tasty. I know you kinda ranked on the '06 as oaky but this was a lot better than the '06 and I think it was a little less oaky but very approachable. But I tend to say that about all of Celia's wines which I adore (including the Rocca).

  • divyamistry

Good to see you back with >5min show 🙂 You rocked, as always… wines, well I'll be the judge of that when I taste 'em!

QOTD1: Yes! In fact, the very first bottled wine I had was a kosher wine. I know it was kosher, because I didn't know such wines even existed! I had it when I had no interest in wine whatsoever… and so I don't even remember the name of that wine.

QOTD2: Haven't had wine this weekend, and probably won't be buying one for some time. Need to save some $$ for a gadget I want to buy. And saving $$ from 10 wines, will get me that gadget. I'm on Wine #2 🙂

And those of you who are reading this comment, I have a question. What Port do you recommend for under $18-$20? Thanks!

  • divyamistry

No way! Dude… your great great great great great grand children are going to read this! Haah!

  • theDude

If I have to look at it, I want that shirt to be staaaannkkyyy!!! Just like the t-shirt I wore under my football pads in 9th grade. I didn't wash that shirt for month and it would stand up on its own. I was a legend!

  • divyamistry

I saw that at the store, I think! Might have to grab one myself!

  • KVM1985

    Welcome home! Nice tan!!!

QOTD 1: I have had about 2 kosher wines; I did not care for either. However, I hope to try more in the future.

QOTD 2: Drank mostly beer this weekend. My favorite was the Williamsburg Alewerk's Porter from Virginia.

  • ONUMello

QOTD1: Only Manischewitz & Mogen David Kosher… ironically both communion wines
QOTD2: I finally opened the 2003 Jacobs Creek Riesling Reserve that I got as a 21st birthday present (on the WS Top 100 list that year) & it had aged & was showing quite well, 90 pts for me
I am already pretty active on Corkd, & try my hardest to review every wine I taste there. I'm in to do more there, let me know what you need!

  • Unfortunate that these wines disappointed… still, a good episode.
QOTD1: I haven't tried kosher wine, haven't found any locally. ( still curious about them )

-I would be interested in reviewing wines ( or food or food parings ) for cork'd content, sure.

QOTD2: the only wine we had this past weekend was a Côtes Du Rhône, Parallele 45; I like it actually, bought two more bottles, 2007 vintage.

  • divyamistry

Man! People get crazy up in arms about the whole lurkers thing here! If I ever said anything bad about lurkers, sorry y'all! I definitely didn't mean to offend anyone. Peace?

  • ChrisV

QOTD: Wild Earth Pinot Noir 2007. Central Otago pinot. Brought it back from NZ when I was there last year. Good wine. Has a spicy aspect to it that I find appealing. Not as good as some Central Otago pinots but one of the cheapest of the good quality wines.

  • dude…did GV bring back some sand from Anguilla that somehow ended up in your crack?

  • dude, if people can't keep themselves interested, given the constant flow of content…don't apologize to them.

  • QOTD: had a number of sadyrs with friends when I was a kid…only Maneshewitz though.
Still thinking I should look for Sasha's favorite Chilean Kosher selection.

QOTD: A very interesting and peachy Frontenac Gris from Nebraska.
Tasting at a cold hardy pruning workshop this past Saturday.

Maybe you could start doing WLTV in a movie set, have semi-naked models walking around, loud music, and end every show with a toast with Kristal….obviously there would have to be guns and drug as well. Come on, Gary! You can do it!

  • QOTD – I had a beautiful Cameron Hughes Lot 125 Pinot Noir from Carneros. At $14 bones this wine rocks.

  • Rog

QOTD1: I've had a few Kosher wines besides Manischewitz, but really I don't differentiate between Kosher and non-Kosher that much.

QOTD2: Wow, this was a hell of a weekend. Went to Quilceda Creek and tasted the 07 flagship and the Red Wine (which rocks this year, btw), then went to Taste Washington, and had Andrew Will Sorella, Boudreaux Merlot, Soos Creek Champoux Cab, Syncline Syrah, and on and on. And opened a great bottle of 2002 Domaine Laurent Vosne Romanee Les Suchots.

  • Pwnd a serious amount of wine this weekend would have to say at $18 bones the 2005 Chateau Plaisance was the SHIZZ!

  • Randall

A good port? Try the various red AND the fairly rare white ports from Revolution Winery in midtown Sacramento (that's right… an URBAN winery!!) They (and most of their other wines) wowed me from the get go and this is the first wine or beer mailing club that I've ever joined.

  • How is the 08?

  • Randall

Oh yeah… and also the Cedar Mountain ports from here in NorCal. They're a bit more than $20, but usually worth it.

  • Interesting show, it's a shame there wasn't much thunder there on the wines. Looking forward to the new Corkd content. Would love to hear some good Kosher recs from SV.

QOTD1+2 (related since it's Pesach): I am Jewish, currently at my in-laws, and had a good time at the first Seder. Like other commenters, I too have had the staple Manischewitz, though also have had a variety from Herzog and Bartenura. BTW, Bartenura's Moscato is way cheap and easy drinking; even my wife can finish off a bottle due to the low ABV. I used Teal Lake Shiraz for Kiddush tonight, BTW. The Gabriele Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wasn't bad, but as others said, not great. I had a Barkhan Merlot that was pretty tasty…just make sure to decant it ahead of time.
