  • Kick ass show.

  • I think that the whole scale of flavors was good, but not interesting enough. I mean you can have a lot of delicious flavors that fit perfectly into your palate, but that doesn't mean they are multi-dimensional, interesting “deep” flavors as well.

    Cheers,
    Sander

thought you didn’t start drinking till you were 21?

    😉

  • Thnx So much BT

  • Just an idea for an improvement you could try to make. It would be cool if you could comment whilst the video is being played like on “YouTube” as I clicked comment and its re-loading the whole video again.

Looking forward to the new book and I will be re-tweeting when its launched!. :]

try opening the page in a separate tab if you want to comment while watching.

  • The Jets not winning a superbowl is holding you back

  • deeeeeeeeeez

GV, hope you found a nice red to pair w/an aussie meat pie @ a rugby game down under. Maybe beer is the way to go with that though. Welcome back.

  • mattgmann

my qotd: Rugby League or Rugby Union??

  • winorob

pissnut? Fun show; I think what's holding you back on Giaconda is that somewhere in the back of your mind, you remember all smack you've talked about Australian wines ( and deservedly so); but you just can't bring yourself to love one just yet.

  • A dumb Rhein king

    Welcome back!

QOTD: You've been in the sun too much. With that comes the overwhelming desire for buttery oakiness and the distancing from green flavors 🙂

  • rwino

Lots fo veggie flavors, but not much fruit to complete it?

  • corkscrew

MM, hate using LOL but it fits this time. Must of been a great sale at Costco's or Old Navy! http://www.winelx.com (yes more spam but it's a good site)

  • corkscrew

JH, I agree..some Aussie Chards like Leeuwin can last 5-8 yrs but 10 is pushing it… looked at your site..have some good Virginian wines and some not so good… http://www.winelx.com

  • Cool show Gary, I'm super guilty of just “meh-ing” Aussie wine, because I just can't enjoy Yellow Tail, or lil Boomey, and I know, know, know that I'm not being fair….this episode makes me want to get out there and make a fair shake to Aussie wine again!

QOTD: It's been mentioned before that maybe you are missing some oak…I'm wondering that and also wondering how long did you let that wine open up? Sounds to me like it might do some magic in the decanter, and really rock out with some stinky cheese and dry sausage.

Maybe I'm only thinking that because I'm freakin starving right now though!

  • QOTD: I know what's holding you back. Now that you're an oak monster fan, your pallet has changed and you're very confused. We'll call it a transition phase and move on.

  • Hey are you still looking for swiss cheese for gourmet library? Ohio Swiss is where it is at!

  • peterwebster2

    Gary
I am baffled as to the varietals you selected from the producers. NONE are the regions spe cialities. You didnt try the Mount Mary Pinot or Cabernet- their signature wines.
You dint try any of the shaw and smith whites which they are known for. You didnt try the Giaconda pinot or chardonay their signature wines. Whilst you are entitled to try whatever, it doesnt give a good representation of what these regions are about

  • guymandude

    Great deal for Cindy;
A Case of the burnt vomit wine and a gray shirt.

  • Jungsenson

    Great show,

    To me Australian is Riesling.
I have to be honest though, I have not spent over £8 on any red Aussie wine. Whites plenty more but not red, to afraid of the big fruit bombs or the oak monster.

QOTD: Could it be a root day?

  • mattgmann

I'd like to know what Ohio swiss you're talking about. I've had some pretty decent stuff for the price, but nothing sensational.

  • lordsauvignon

QOTD: What is holding you back is the price. 70 bones for a bottle? The component thats missing is accessibility to those of us who don't drop multiple Jacksons on a bottle of wine.

Glad to have you back as well. I am excited to try the Shaw and Smith Shiraz
    Can't wait for the blinds!!!

  • Greg B.

Big G, Great to have you back. They bring it down in Oz. I was there last November and had many a good wine. LOL

QOTD: Oak monster and you hand and hand awhile back, now this. Sounds to me like a palate change.

  • M_Woolley

Hey Gary, What's the problem with Mollydooker? Every time you put down a winery you seem to choose them. Is there some bad blood?

  • drt999

QOTD — just missing the oomph factor on the finish? I've noticed with silky wines, the first first taste seduces, but sometimes the lack of finish just stops it being great

  • FullOnNelson

So happy to have WLTV back!

QOTD: You were missing inspiration. Have you ever seen an musician or dancer (think Winter Olympics Figure Skating) where all the technical moves were in place, but there was no soul? That was your wine. It was smooth, with great balance between fruit and vegetable, aromatic, but no soul, no umph.

  • Glad you are back in the thunder saddle. Don't leave the vayniacs waiting so long between shows! I know what is holding you back Gary, your palate has shifted towards the fruit bombs again. It is time to revisit Mollydooker and let loose.

  • jparadise

I don't think it's a big put down really they are just the easiest name to pull out for big Aussie fruit bombs. I mean what are they up to like 20% Abv on some of those?

  • Grill Factor

Here are the prices I pay if I were to buy these here in Sydney: Mount Mary $90.00; Shaw and Smith $40.00; Giaconda $130.00 – Not much Thunder for me…

  • Mr Gary,
Thank you so much for doing a 100% Aussie wines show & also trying to dispel the myth about Australian wines. Your selection today was sensational. These are all icons here in Australia, especially the Giaconda (you need to try their Pinot Noir). Thanks again for gracing our shores with your presence last week – The aussie wine industry is still talking about your recent visit & certainly holds you in high regard with your work in simplifying what wine is about.

    qotd – JETLAG

  • pawncop

Welcome back, your energy level is such that I am sure you had a great time.

Appreciate your view and not taking any wine for granted, despite it's origin or style.

QOTD – Not really sure what is missing. Keep trying though, you will figure it out.

  • Grill Factor

GV! I am looking for a white wine that can age 5 – 10 years. I am a massive Sauternes and Vouvray fan and one of my favorite wines ever was the '08 Tramin Pinot Bianco. Any thoughts – anybody?

  • lgindoff

QTOD: You second guess yourself since you think you are biased due to your recent visit and therefore over-compensate by scoring lower than they deserve.

  • thamtham

Thanks for the big-big-big-big shout-out Gary! Yes, I've been one of the infamous lurkers for a while now, but this episode has successfully convinced the lurker in me to give you a special thank you. I'm really looking forward to watching your Banyuls episode!

QOTD: Expensive wine like that, maybe give some love in the decanter~ 🙂

  • ONUMello

Wow, gotta say you were in rare form today, between the MW comment & whispering…

QOTD: Maybe the WS 87? It has an average 93.5CT which is HUGE (I've found CT tends to underscore the critics 2-3 points) but WS tends to agree with you: “not for all tastes”
“Tart and a bit green, with open-textured plum and green bean flavors that linger gently. Not for all tastes, but has distinctive character.” -WS 2/28/07

  • Drew

Eric, maybe the Leo Buring Rieslings.

    Cheers

  • Thursday

QOTD: Find your truth in a BROWN BAG! … can't wait

  • Drew

Grill, how about some quality German Rieslings?

  • ONUMello

BTW glad you're getting a great former Buckeye to help your Jets. OH–IO!!

  • alienrelic

QOTD: Gary, could it be that your palate is changing but you aren't quite aware of where it's at yet? It happens….

  • laurieinvt

You can comment as you watch if you're registered with Disqus instead of commenting as a guest.

  • Ozzy

Welcome back great show today. “Piss-nut” haha that was great, and bring on the brown bags cannot wait. And congrats to your Jets for landing Holmes.
QOTD: Maybe the reason you are holding back alittle was because of the price 79 bones is alittle high.

  • laurieinvt

    Excellent and fun show. Thanks!
QOTD: I think Aussie Sammy S is right- jetlag!

  • slimdogny

QOTD: I may agree with Greg B. Oak monster and gary hanging on the chards, maybe a palate change is in the air.

Psyched for the brown bags…that's where all the magic happens…

  • Altboy97

Love, love, love that you brought along the “footie”. Hope you got to go see some AFL while you were down under. Great game. Also great that you got to experience some of the range of Aussie wine.
QOTD – first oaked chards, now this. What's holding you back, maybe hay fever.

  • Phil G

QOTD – maybe it was missing enough acid? did you think it would age well? maybe the combo of flavors didn't match well together?

Love the brown bags – bring it on , piss-nut

  • scottEJ

Welcome back, G. Doesn't appear that the jet-lag affected you too much.

QOTD: Maybe your expectations were that the wine would be bigger and more northern rhone like given the nose had you going that way? Off to Cork'd . G'Day.

  • QOTD you know I've had this wine and it's the veggie taste, you spend so much time going OMG what's with the silk robe and the veggies. For fun try drinking it with a Hill of Grace or a Old Block Shiraz. I think these wines represent Australia and the diverse wine making we have going on at the moment. We have lots of young wine makes coming over from other countries bring new ideas and ways of doing things and the old wine makes being typical Aussie take these ideas and use them. We love new ideas we love wine.

    G'day mates

  • I need to buy more Australian wines.

QOTD: Can't say why you're holding back, could it be that you just got back from the land down under and have not yet regulated your palate?

  • RedRum

I can't believe this!!! I was going to email you to try the Shaw and Smith Shiraz, as an example of a balanced Aussie, and there you go review it!!! My favourite part of the show was when you were trying the Giaconda and mentioned how easily you can pick up the viogner, while it was another varietal (I did not pick which!) which you had just mentioned. Once you realised that you stuffed up, you went on a crazy rant throwing crazy knowledge and wine jargon, probably as a subconscious defense for stuffing up. Awesome moment!! One of my fav WLTV moments ever!!

QOTD: probably nothing in particular. Maybe re-taste the wine another day?
