Your bored that's why didn't score it 95

  • Mattswords

Awesome show, with some awesome sounding wines. I think many of us will be heading out to see if we can track down a old-world styled Aussie wine for the weekend. Treasure hunt kinda thing.

QOTD: From the sounds of the last few episodes, you might be riding a tiny oak-raving…something to contrast the vegetal aspects against.

    Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You’ll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me
And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker-bag
You’ll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me

Really nice to see some Aussie wines make a impact on the show. It seemed the whites were the only ones lately making any kind of noise because its hard to go “fruit bomb” on them. But excited to find the Shaw Smith product line somewhere here in Texas. It seems that Shaw Smith is making incredible stuff since you raved also about the chardonnay in episode #614. You went 93 points on the chard and compared it to Burgundy, so I know I will like his style of chardonnay.

Good to see you back, been anticipating this one for awhile. You kept us hanging there for awhile b/c u said you would do another show in Australia.

Qotd: I think its the lack of fruit to match the greeness. Personally I like green too, but its better if its racing within an upfront shot of fruit and continues to tail off after the fruit has left. Also the fact it will not be massively appealing may cause you to curtail your higher rating. Just a thought 🙂

  • Allan

That's all changed now!!! Mouton action!! instead!

  • jaybloxham

Your right. I just looked 3 of the last 4 episodes the same gray shirt…..Gary did you piss off the wifey wife? Are you living in your office???? lol Just say this…. Yes dear, I'm an idiot dear, your right dear……much love for you gary

  • mattgmann

QOTD: The bottle says Australia on the front. Controversy. I'll bet blind you'd make sweet sweet love to that wine.

Good show. Hope your trip to aussieland was fun. That jetlag is a biatch.

Another underrated thing Australia has is horse racing. Well, not the horses themselves, they're pigs. But if you're into bettin the ponies and you haven't played the Aussie horses, try it out. It's awesome. The numbers rarely lie and you can slip in long shots regularly with a little know how.

Sipping on a D'arenberg “Hermit Crab” right now. Another great product from a great producer at a decent price 🙂

  • amsgpwarrior

Have you tried aging a riesling? They can age a very long time and there are plenty of high dollar rieslings to be had with great long term ageing potential.

  • jaybloxham

    why??????????? oh the horror…….LOL

  • jason carey

Maybe what is missing is some food. ?
Or there is a little lack of structure.?
Maybe you actually wanted a bit more fruit.. but Victoira is a cool climate.

  • mattgmann

    Off topic Gary,

I'm a life long browns fan; it's a hard life. This season looks to be another disaster, but I'll withhold total despair until the draft. Assuming they blow the draft, as usual, I would consider raising a second NFL flag in my house for this season. A trial run, if you will, to see how cheering another franchise would go.

Anyway, I'd consider backing the Jets if you could give me at least one REALLY good reason.

  • Allan

    No, Great price!

  • jaybloxham

Get ready I think there are about 400 or so reasons coming

  • K2G

I wouldn't get too excited or vocal about Santonio Holmes, the guy can't even play the first 4 games of the year cause he's an idiot who doesn't seem to understand basic league rules about substance abuse.
Personally I'm on board with the Steelers fans who were happy to have Holmes traded and are currently up in arms about Big Ben and want him shipped out as well. I read an interesting blurb from a Steeler fan who is also a father of two young girls that said he would stop rooting for Pittsburgh so long as Ben is on the team. Perhaps this is extreme but I understand his point, enough is enough and especially when the issues become things like sexual assault/rape, etc. Goodell has laid down the law so far during his tenure and I hope he continues to do so with Big Ben, lets see a suspension worthy of his indescretions.

  • Allan

I have some German Riesling in my cellar; now going on 20 years and drinking awfully nice!!!

  • Allan

Am i the only one that has noticed that the Mottster is back????!!!!!!!!!

    What's wrong with you people? ; )

  • barrethudson

Gary, I think you've changed and your palate might be following, maybe that's why you didn't like the third wine as much as you think you should have. When I first started watching you were super high energy and I could tell that was genuine, that just how you were, now, the more relaxes shows seem a little more real, a little more like the true Gary and sometimes when you try to be high energy it almost seems like your pushing. None of this is meant to be criticism (I know your sensitive) I just get a little different vibe from you of late, so maybe different attitude, different wine preferences? I dunno just my 2 cents!! You gonna make it on TV a draft day again?

  • wesleymcallister

    Welcome back Gary.
QOTD: I think you are being held back because you are getting old. You probably just can't do 95 like you used too. You are 34 so it is to be expected.

  • Meh.

QOTD: I think it is your face, that is all.

  • hehehe… 92 OK.
Hermitage blend and silky wine ( the last), the rhone head is holding back?
QOTD: jetlag? and to much aussie beer. Palates do change …

  • corkscrew

After the trip….unless he has the same shirt on when he left…..have not had any of these wines. $47 for a Aussie White…love Aussie Shiraz but you don't need to spent $80 bones..QOTD-maybe a Kangaroo kicked you in the head. http://www.winelx.com

  • SamKw

    Welcome back!

QOTD: Maybe there's something in the wine that didn't click with you but you can't quite put your finger on it. You're clearly a much more experienced taster than I am, but it could happen, right? I find that revisiting the wine at a later time or reading other people's tasting notes sometimes helps (although some people might consider the latter cheating… but I'd rather turn to other people for help than sit by myself not knowing what the issue might have been. Besides, if you read the TN after you've tasted the wine for yourself, there's no danger of approaching the wine with preconceived notions.)

  • Well I hope so, at least as far as for my 2003 Guigal Hermitage Blanc that I hope to drink when it's 10

  • adrums

QOTD: It might just seem out of place. Too many secondary non-fruit elements in a package we all (including you) associate with fruit-forward hedonism?
Fwiw, both Parker and Raynolds reviewed this wine back in 2006, so it may well have since evolved significantly…

  • Allan

Lookin' like a value play, my friend..

  • mattgmann

I was given a case of a gewurztraminer from '81 that I was going to throw out, but decided to try a bottle. Admittedly it was a little past it's prime, but was still quite good.

  • Gary,
    Mount Mary Triolet

Ten year white!!?? Yikes!! It's gotta be oxidized, I bet. And that deep color turns me off right away…it's an over the hill signal.

    Just a thought.

  • Paul Snieckus

It's the price holding you back Gary! The Price! Jeesh. $79 no thanks.

  • oh yes, from alsace gewürz and reisling can age a lot. Just love that petroleum sniff and those dry tropical swirls. I have a friend who insist on serving late 80's every time, and I don't complain at all 😀

  • DmitriEn

Actually just brought few bottles of Rheingau rieslings from my trip to Germany. But then again storage conditions for white wines are more demanding than for reds.

  • mattgmann

I'll bet that shirt has high qpr. They must come in a ten pack. GV should wear it until the Jets lose a game. Starting now.

  • Great episode.
QOTD: It's all lightning and no thunder.

  • yiplar

It's not big enough, you want a huge full bodied wine and it's just too delicate to earn a 95 for you.

  • Allan

Well you have to buy the right stuff for starters.

I also had a 1990 Riesling from germany that was amazing, recently. Karl Erbes, Ürziger Wurzgarten 1990, yEaaaa it rOcKeD!!

Wine can age! Note all Vayniacs!

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • NOPE ! Not even close, not this producer!

  • mattgmann

I like pineapple with my spam

  • Globex

“piss nut” love that!! That's my new word of the day.

QOTD: take the rest of that bottle home and have it tonight with some really good goat cheese & crackers/bread and see if that's what was the missing link holding you back. [your father might agree] 🙂

  • Phaser

    First,
Quit worrying about what other people are going to say when you rate a wine, you never did before. I count on you being honest on what you think. As for the wine, I?ll make up my own mind if I like it, or even if I am going to by it. I look at you and what you do as a help in the wine world, not the law.
QOTD: You did not rate the wine as a 95 because you thought it was not at that level. Freedom of choice, isn?t America the greatest.

  • Allan

    No not really!

  • Allan

No doubt,,,, Sasha Rocks! i mean that!!

  • Bredsun

QOTD: You are getting held back by Ken Wu like Goldberg in D2 the Mighty Ducks…

anyway, not to be a piss-nut but price ranges are WAY out of my college kid budget…I would love to see another value/total-wine/grocery store/availability episode. Would be cool for us young gun fans our herrr that don't have the big bucks….

…and I just got an iPhone (finally) and was wondering when you guys are gonna put an app out?

  • Allan

I think you might be right!

  • Allan

White can age just as good as red, my friend!

  • Speaking of stereotypes, is there no such thing as a nice Aussie wine under $30? I mean, I love an aged oxidized white as much as the next guy, but for fifty bucks? Feh. How about a nice Margaret River shiraz, I've had several that were pleasant surprises under $20. Flinders Bay, I'm thinking?

Actually, last great Australian wine I had was a Clare Valley riesling, last night. It was screwcapped, it was a 2004, I paid five bucks for it off a clearance rack, and it was amazing.

By the way, credit where credit is due to Shaw & Smith for introducing me to the joys of unoaked chardonnay half a dozen years ago.

  • castello

You are obviously being a pissnutttthead. Great show, some fun. Wish I could spit some 80 bone 95 point wine. Free shipping on 2???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • castello

    REALLY!?

  • Welcome back GV and Mott! Great non-stereotypical showing. The burnt vomit thing doesn't do it for because of personal smell/memory recall. Great vocab like pissnut and nerdy nerd nerd mcgee. Looking forward to the brown bags later!

QOTD: I'm going to agree with a couple other commenters: barnyard.

  • lizzy43

Great show! Welcome back to the USA! My only thought is that the price is high and you already said you think we may not like it. Perhaps its very specific to your palate and your unsure it will fly with the rest of us. IMHO Happy Tuesday!
