QOTD : Achaval Ferrer single vineyards or quimera

  • P.S. I want one of those wooden WLTV crates!

  • Some wines are better than others…and some tables are better than others ๐Ÿ˜‰

QotD: Colome Malbec from northern Argentina: http://www.bodegacolome.com/

  • dsallen

I have found Norton Bodega Malbec Reserve 2006 to be pretty good for the price.

Your week was like mine, GV. Kinda bleh with a few good moments ๐Ÿ™‚

  • RANDINTHECITY

    Yeah, now I believe.. lol
    Was just surprised.
    ๐Ÿ™‚

  • WineWoman

QOTD: The most recent was a Gascon which was good value wine. I also liked Septima and Henry LaGarde from a few years back.

  • noahnoah

    ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz

What's up with Gary's Radio Talk Show on Sirius Satellite Radio ?

    When ?

    Anyone ?

  • noahnoah

Amazing, this entire week Gary had not appeared on WLTV, That was a computer generated image.

Today's episode gets an 83, the entire week gets a 85

    Hope you're back next week.

    Cheers

The chalk board is great, but you need some ideas. Your office is like my office – used and cluttered. Good thing our minds are clear and crisp, ugh? snicker.

OH! WineLibrary wooden cases! How do I get one of those puppies? Do a contest, I'll play the accordion and dance on a ball for one of them!
Good good shows on brown bags this week. nice and real.

Qotd: Alamos Malbec – $8 at BJs, rated 90 by someone(like, who cares?), and I love it. Walmart has it at $9. that is how i like to buy my wine. haha. buy some cheap chinese made plastic items and a bottle of wine. THAT'S America! thanks, Obama!

  • nothing dude, u were bored by this?

  • wow that hurts bro!

  • OH it was for u!

  • Moselman

QOTD: loved LA POSTA (PAULUCCI?) 2005 ANGEL PAULUCCI ARGENTINA

also enjoyed a FUZION Shiraz blend for some different palate challenges.

  • orangebottle

Thank you for moving to the couch. I was going 'YES'. It's Friday, it's your show, you can do anything you like.
Sorry about the wines that didn't bring any thunder to the table. For the wine that you didn't like would you put them on the Cinderella wine with a discounted price for us? That should teach those bad wines a lesson.

  • richardvinifera

QOTD: De Martino, 2006 Single Vineyard (Limavida, Maule Valle) Malbec. Not over oaked or sugarfied. I've got a few bottles left and think it has enough tannin and fruit to last but it's not as approachable as i remember, a bit dry and shut down… entering a dumb phase (age ingrat)??!!

  • RANDINTHECITY

    C'mere you!!! XOX
    lol
TY..sweet..thoughtful..loving. Its not just about wine! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • andyweeks

QOTD: My favorite Malbec I've had in recent memory is from Luigi Bosca, in Argentina. Much lighter than you expect Malbec to be (almost as light as Pinot) but with a lot of complexity and balance. Not even sure what vintage it was, I'm ashamed to say, but the most recent one I'm sure.

  • noahnoah

    Somewhat, yes.
I do appreciate the honesty about the low quality of the wines.
You seemed out of it, for some reason.
Now, what about the lack of answer regarding my question about Sirius ?
    What's up ?
Bring your dad to the show. Love him.
    Cheers

  • Spero

Drinking a Catena Malbec with a doctored up (spinach, parmesan, garlic) thin crust Home Run Pizza when I lit you up. Glad I had it instead of whatever you've been drinking this week. Favorite Malbec Atitude 1050, 2005.
Hoping next week gets better. Let me know if you need someone to pick the blinds.

  • AaronO

Favorite Malbec still is the first I ever had. Louis Philippe Edwards '03. Full body, ripe dry dusty tannins, Black fruit, tobbacco, good concentration and finesse! Yet to try a malbec that rivals it's greatness. I hate the fakey fake fruit bombs!!!

  • Good show, I like the honesty!

  • kaeley

The Brown bag variatale specific, not double blind are my favorite shows. Keep them coming. Thanks Gary

  • aha…the sweet alchemy of the remnants…I love it. Rolland would probably have a heart attack.

  • boomy13

I'm actually sippin on a Malbec now, and its treating me well. Bodega Tamari Reserva, 2008. You may have struck out, but the shows were will enjoyable. The Brown Bag is good stuff. The double blind might also be interesting. I say you try three wine on a double blind at least once. Does anyone else think a double blind show or two would be interesting?

  • Gary. When are you going to do a mead show? I think it'd be awesome, though there certainly isn't a good mead selection out there (I only find it in the local [WI] section).

  • QOTD; Maryhill

  • ron westlund

comes on Gary – where is your thunder, where is your qua? really now, it's ok to not like the wines….i love it when that happens….makes my smile when i contrast those doggies with the wines that i love. i know em when i love em. Gary, maybe take a couple of days off, go to the beach…have a extra long cheese steak with all the fixin's. you'll be back on your game in no time!! sleep in, tomorrow is saturday. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • noahnoah

Need I say that you are LOVED ?

How about tasting some full bodied, well balanced wines at a phenomenal price ?
We American like to talk allot/discuss wines, but have ADD when it comes to aging wines.

Lastly, bring on Sasha next week ?

    Cheers

  • Michael D

QOTD – the two best malbecs that I have tried are Valentin Bianchi Famiglia and Anoro. Both are from Argentina and the latter is only available in the U.S. in Las Vegas, as far as I can tell. Has anyone found Anoro malbec anywhere else in the U.S.?

Also, for the money, Norton Reserva brings the thunder for me.

  • yacochuya

Favorite malbecs: San Pedro de Yacochuya(2003/2006) and their flagship Yacochuya(2002) (hence my name, actually fun to say in Argentinian spanish. Also big fan of Alta Vista Serenade/Temis 2006

Anyone out there going to the World Cup!!!!!! I will be there and would love to connect with other wine lovers in Stellenbosch (there from June 30-July 6) or a Whinos for Rhinos safari in Kruger from June 21-23.

  • jparadise

I think a dbl blind show would be awesome! I think GV's just scared to do it and strike out. (see if we can goad him into it)

  • troytee

QOTD: Gascon. Dare I say I'm getting a little bored of Malbec and getting a cookie cutter feel coming out of Argentina. Hope not, though.
How about a Battle of the Jug Wines. Pick the best of the “worst”

  • TheDrewz

Dude, I think Gary reviewed a Luigi Bosca on WLTV. That was the reason I purchased that particular bottle from the Library.

  • jiggerz

I have seen the Crios out there as I dwell in PA, but haven't tried any vintage so I can't comment there. If a Malbec blend of greater than 50% Malbec qualifies, then I have to say the best I have personally tasted is the Bodega Colome Amalaya 2006. The blend is : 55% Malbec, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, 5% Tannat, 5% Bonarda. I have not been able to find the 2007 release. Keep up the great work GV!

  • Pat__B

Why are you putting really basic mass producers in brown bags and trying to guess what they are? Aside from the surprise yesterday, this week's brown bag episodes weren't as exciting as vintage brown bag episodes. If you are going to hide the identity of the wine, why not have a unique angle that makes it more of a mystery? This week just felt out of sync. We'll shake it off and see you on Monday GV.

  • Al

You don't have anything to apologize for. You are doing what you do and telling it as it is. That is why we watch. I learned from the shows. Great week.

  • Laid Back Friday on the couch AND brown baggin' it. Aw yeah! Agreed, too bad on the wines this week. I'm hoping for a stronger showing next week.

QOTD: Most of what has been said…Alamos on a price point, Catena, and Gascon.

  • Damn man…. rough week? Grab a wine/beer you love and get ready for the draft next week so you can boo whoever the Jets announce…

QOTD: Best Malbec… lately… Flechas de los Andes Gran Malbec. BIG BIG BIG BIG tannins, creamy, spicy, delicious-y!

  • A dumb Rhein king

I was hoping you'd do a laid back Friday. Too bad it wasn't with better wine, but that's the way the dice rolls sometimes.

QOTD: Unfortunately whenever I have a great Malbec I share it with friends before I formally review it for Cork'd. Since that is my long term wine memory, I can't name any of my favs off the top of my head. I was kinda surprised by everyone's love for Gascรณn, my palate does not agree at all.

  • A dumb Rhein king

btw, both of the tags on the vid progress bar list the same wine. I looked through the comments and didn't see anyone mention that, so I thought I'd let y'all know.

  • ONUMello

I find it funny at least in this case you seem to agree with all of those on the CW forums who feel JM overscores about everything he tastes.
QOTD: 2006 Laurel Glen Malbec Vale La Pena

  • Okay, maybe the couch doesn't always add life. What an uninspired pair of wines – even the Cahors, which is a damn shame.

Q: Clos la Coutale, my first Cahors. Only wish I could still get it for under $10 a bottle, too. Now that I think of it, I wish I could get Marc Ollivier's La Pepie at all. There's a non-traditional Loire Valley Malbec for you.

But I should give some love to the Auka Malbec we had at Wine on a Dime, which in general didn't go over too well. The more time I spent with it, the better it got – and it was inky and deep like a French Malbec rather than lush and violety and Argentine.

  • Had the Amalaya at a Whole Foods tasting a few weeks back: it struck me as almost jammy, but on the whole nice enough for me to take one home. Seemed like it'd be a great steak wine.

  • john

“The most passionate wine show in the world goes 6 minutes and 58 ? What's right with this picture? I can't spread the WLTV love after watching this show. New Low for the show is tonight.
I'd rather have no show that Gary just mailing it in. Even the laid back Friday prop was so fake.

Gary do you still want to do this show? put some effort into it bro. Look back at what you put out this week…….

    – john

  • sichuanpeppercorn

Favorite malbec are archaval farrar's stuff like Quincemara.

Really enjoy the blind brown bags and think the ten minute eps are the right length.

  • Hey Gary

Thanks for the show, love the enthusiasim!

QOTD: Haven't find one I love. I've found lots I'd happily drink at a barbeque, but nothing that rocks my world,

    Cheers
    Andrew

  • Allan

How about doin' a show on Rheingau Riesling?

    Weil, Vollrads, Breuer….?

  • Ozzy

Hey GV don't worry about it you still brought huge THUNDER to this weeks shows even if the wines didn't.

  • nonamerican

Gary, I agree with those that detect a lack of passion in your recent postings. I love the brown bag format, but in this recent set its more than the wines that have fallen flat. I really to love it when you're passionate about the show and not just the wine. That said, don't worry about the fact that you haven't been feel'in the wines lately. That's the way it goes sometimes. The fact that you're straight about it is what so many of us love about the show, so don't sweat it.

QOTD: Not crazy about Malbec or Argentinian wines in general.

  • drwino

Coming out of the Lurkers Closet after living up in there for several months. Heard about you a few years ago when Kevin Rose started pimpin' you on Diggnation, but I guess I wasn't ready for wine yet. Now, I'm all in and feel overwhelmed every time I go to the store, but i get through it.

Anyway, just wanna say I love your show, others are complaining but it seems fine to me. Your shows are so varied, I really enjoy that.

QOTD: I've only tried Luigi Bosca and Gascon Malbecs. Don't know how they compare to others but I thought they were pretty good. According to you, that's all that matters. ๐Ÿ™‚
