90/100

Gary did a very good job being nice to this guest when all he really wanted to do was pan the wines and the price points. The extra minute tagged on to the end of the episode where GV tells us what he really thinks is a bit sneaky but great nevertheless. I clicked on the link to the twitter page and the last posting was 20th Feb 2011. Go figure

I did a little more research on Beckstoffer To Kalon grape pricing. It gets
pretty interesting. Andy Beckstoffer prices his grapes so that a ton of his
grapes sell for 100 times the bottle price. So, if the wine sells for
$125.00/bottle the grape cost would have been $12,500.00/ton. Paul Hobbs who
buys To Kalon grapes for his To Kalon Cabernet that sells for $235.00/bottle
pays $23,500.00/ton. As Beckstoffer says, that levels the playing field
between the grower (who wants the biggest yield he can get per acre) and the
winemaker (who wants to pay as little as he can for the grapes). It’s pretty
much the same philosophy and pricing scheme on beef. If you want grade A
beef that sells for less at retail and therefore costs less to raise than
USDA Prime you buy it cheaper. The lower the yield per acre the higher the
price for the grape. God I’m a geek!

  • winecrazy

Awe… Randilina got a little sicky poo today did she. Well I hope you get well soon. Try the $30 bottles of wine instead of the $200-$300…..that might help. You probably had a bad 82 Marguax or a 89 Haut Brion that didn't agree with you last night…???

    🙂

  • Peter Work

I think adding promotional items will create too much noise on your shows. It is about the wine itself! And your palate….

  • RANDINTHECITY

No, those always agree with me. LOL Im going with Airborn and green tea today tho..
I decanted the tea for hours…I think its ready! LOL
    Thanks. 🙂

  • wekemas

Promos are a nice bonus but I don't think it should be mandatory. That being said, I'm off to Cult Vines to maybe use the Gary promo… 🙂 And good show. I didn't really think he was too selly.

  • winecrazy

Nice show…. I liked the ending. I love it when you can rate a wine 90 when the winemaker thinks it's a 98. Harlan?? If that drinks like Harlan I'll buy the rest of those cases right now for 30% off $125

I like my Justin at $48 a bottle. And my Stewart and Neal and Pahlmeyer and Ovid mercury. I would love to tatse his wine…..maybe since he is offering a 30% “GARY” discount maybe he can have a tasting at the store one day…?? Yes!!! a Cult Vines tasting at WL.. !! Hey, he may sell a lot of wine at 30% off on that day. Cash and carry baby yeah!!! Yeah Baby, do I make Randi!!! Do I..??

    LOL

  • gubbiotti

interesting show. not a whole of there there. but none the less.
it seems like wine for rich guys that have something to prove. oh well.
wrap up is good and the new cork'd looks good. it is more like a blog and there is a reason to visit it if i don't have any tasting notes to enter
    peace

  • jaybloxham

I think you should tell them [the winemakers] if you like the wine, and be honest while they are there. If you don't like it tell them. I respect you Gary, and I believe they will too. what is it… oh yea..If they can't handle the heat stay out of the kitchen is the old saying.

I think people are under the impression that ‘if you bottle it, they will come’. I imagine most of us Vayniacs know that its not nearly as easy as it sounds, there are few wines out there that are just THAT good the sell themselves. And he figures because he sells wine for a living how hard could it be?

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

    EXACTLY !!!

  • scott_the_ex_winedude

Loved the show, not sure about the new rating afterwards format, wait & see. I think supporting people like Mike is important, even at these price levels. Sign up!

  • esj1000

I think you should have told the guy your score while he was there, he looked big and ugly enough to take it! I am not sure about the offers on the show as you have a lot of non USA people watching who are not always able to take up the deal due to the cost of shipping the wine to the country they live in.

  • johnfarrin

    QOTD: Sorry Mike, none.

To be brutally honest I think that this is exactly the type of thing that is KILLING Napa et al. The idea that a first release winery has the gall to ask $125.00/bottle is almost incredulous. I get the fact that it's To Kalon but that alone is only one factor. You would think that Mike had bought a few acres of the vineyard instead of just the grapes. Some marketing consultant (pre-crash) told him that To Kalon alone was worth $125.00 and he went with it without ANY track record. Jesus, most people at least wait for that mid-ninety score from Parker to enter into that price stratosphere.

Sorry for the rant but bad marketing and bad hustle get my hackles up.

  • ronthecopsomm

Great Show!!!! I enjoyed the ending.

Gary when are you heading out west again? You had Chris the cop on how about a west coast cop v.s east coast cop throw down. Unless you are afraid of the west coast's thunder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Rob

QOTD: Sorry at that price none right now.
    Pick me for the bag!!!
