90/100

Gary did a very good job being nice to this guest when all he really wanted to do was pan the wines and the price points. The extra minute tagged on to the end of the episode where GV tells us what he really thinks is a bit sneaky but great nevertheless. I clicked on the link to the twitter page and the last posting was 20th Feb 2011. Go figure

Got my two bottles!!! I'll post back once consumed.

  • billcody

Very interesting show. How can any money be made with such a limited run? Might be a good topic for a show, “So you want to make wine? Here's the math and what you are up against”. The first couple years must be simply a labor of love. The rules, limits, labeling, distribution challenges etc. must force you in to a long term focused business plan with early years in the red. Thanks

  • billcody

Good point. Guests might now even want to appear if they knew there was going to be a snippet on them after leaving.

  • slave2thevine

Who 11-18-10? —> My guess is that it is Misha's first birthday. Could be wrong…but it seems to sound right to me…

  • castello

I think I kind of like the after show scoring thing. You can be more honest without them right there.
QOTD1 Maybe, lets try it for a few guest episodes.
    QOTD2 One bottle for $29.99.

  • Victor

your question's answer – by making promos mandatory for guests you are limiting your guests to high rollers, vintners, winemakers and shutting the door on wine nerds sans expense accounts. Guest's QOTD – I'd have to try it first and you don't/won't ship to Canada…
151 to go… is it too soon to countdown?
    GV II due date?

  • lucresmith

I liked having a new producer on the show and talking about working with crushpad as that is something I might look into doing. QOTDs: No, I don't think guests should have to bring promos or deals; no I don't want his wines. But, I sure would like the bag, you can send it with my vaniac two-pack this weekend! 🙂

  • Mike seems like a nice guy, who has taken his entry into this business seriously, and probably made a good decision to go CrushPad…even then, he's in tough category.
Interesting article that came around, discussing impending dark clouds over the CA wine industry:

    like the wrap up.

  • Thank you!

Dan where in NH are you? I am in Concord. There is a free wine tasting at the Wine Society in Nashua on this Friday if you don’t have plans. Its from 6 to 7:30.

  • I think you should just keep it real, stick to tasting and discussing wines. I believe that's why most of us watch. When you bring people on with promos and all that it just feels like a sales pitch, which for some reason makes me uncomfortable. You've built this amazing show on being honest, and never “selly”. Please don't let that get away from you.

  • dann_in_nh

Loved the ending, that's the manner in which it should be done when you have guest wine maker. What's up with the “more difficult to ship wine” mentioned earlier in the episode?

  • i think he did come off very sell-ish… the $100+ price tag is a big turn off, I tend to stay within the under $20 range and have only recently ventured into the $30 range.

QOTD: I don't think it should be mandatory but I do like the idea of promo items from the winemakers. I'm still trying to find a place to hang my signed “Three Thieves – The Show” poster. Receiving that poster has made me more aware of their wines and I've already purchased many bottles of The Show Malbec and a lot of the Bandit boxed wine series of Cab, and Pinot.

  • GV – QOTD: no requirement for guests, nice if they make use of the opportunity
MC – QOTD: sorry can't go there, but good luck in your endeavor.

Thanks for the show, and the trailer…

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • Wow, surprised you felt the need to even throw the wrap up in there, I thought it was fairly obvious that the wines weren't your cup of tea. I don't even think the ratings are necessary with these types of wines, just lump em all into the same category of high alcohol, over oaked fruit bombs, and be on with it. A shame he's wasting his money on To Kalon fruit and then covering the terroir with a big dose of oak.

QOTD: How much wine do I want? 0 please. No disrespect, but a $125, over-oaked, generic steakhouse red ain't gonna do it for me. And neither is a high alcohol white that costs $40.

  • benkearney

I'd be curious to know what the fruit from this vineyard costs per bottle.

  • NY Pete

sorry Kirk … wrong on the birthday guess

  • kasperhip

I don't think it could Mischa's first birthday. Check out the end of #814 and see for yourself why….

  • Anonymous

    I’ll sell mine for 99.95…….lol

  • kasperhip

Do you know who it is about? I'm getting excited…

  • jaybloxham

How is the Bandit stuff? I too went out and bought 2 bottles each of The Show Cab and Malbec.

  • slave2thevine

Guest QOTD: Hmmm…if my math comes out right it sounds like with your production at 50 cases you're looking to make about $75,000 from this one wine sale. My question is…what is the markup from Crush? How much did it cost to buy the grapes from Crush? With Barrels costing about $600-$1200 a piece it sounds like you might have paid quite a bit for the fruit…but It looks like one hell of a markup. To me that's a markup that looks quite high…but then again, I don't really know these sorts of things so it would be interesting to see how transparent you are willing to be with your business?

  • slave2thevine

Whoops…like I said just a guess. I've lost sense of time in the last year of grad school….

  • Allan

Nice show. Cool winemaker. Brave move.

Maybe a little too much pricey price……?

You should get Mott to do the 3rd half… bringing his review to the whole show in general..!

  • mattgmann

interesting start….I never understand why everyone seems to want to make their own wine.

  • ron westlund

Come on Gary – I am feeling the love now. Your first words on the white were “acid” !!!
thanks!! Otherwise, uninspiring wines for my taste. but it's fun to see guests on the show. Bring on the french contingent next time. 🙂
    ron

  • Bredsun

QOTD: I'll pass, college kids can't afford that kinda stuff.

I think putting a requirement on guest wouldn't be a great idea, but if they voluntarily want to do a promo thats totally cool.

…for the record, I love those over oaked fruit bombs, mmmmmmmm

  • kasperhip

I totally agree with your sentiment, but I don't think you need to bash him. If his wines aren't worth it, they will definately not sell in this market, and he will be punished for going about his wine making venture in this way. He might be loaded, and then who cares? If it sells, good for him. I would NEVER spend 125 dollars on a california cab anyway. And I don't like the name either. He seemed like a really nice guy, though.

  • Lb_in_KS

    ABC mike, ABC.

  • Allan

    It's OK!

    I dunno 125 bones?

It has to be damn gooooooooooooood! YEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWW!!! ; )

  • Lb_in_KS

QOTD1… might cut down on some interesting insights…though could be fun at times.

  • mattgmann

I agree. I'd also like to see the financials of making a wine like this. Seems to me it's more of an investment venture than an artisanal winemaking project.

  • Beeper

I'm gonna have to make my own barrel at some point…

  • johnfarrin

    Up to $23,500/ton

  • Interesting show. Didn't feel too sell-y to me. The wrap-up is kind of neat…as long as you're talking out the nose, taste, and “feel” of the wine with the guest, the experience is shared.

GV's QOTD: Promo's are a neat way to get some lurkers out. Also, some commenters may like a little love. Either way, don't center the guests' presence around it. Let it be about the wine or their passion.

Mike's QOTD: Can't afford it right now. I'll catch up in late 2011, hopefully. Jerz, represent.

  • NY Pete

let the offers roll … that is all.

  • Allan

Yo G, just score as you go along…. Ok?

Much more cooool! The guest should not know what the **** is going to happen…..

    But you're just being nice I Know!! ; )

    And u still Elvis Presley!!!!!!

  • kasperhip

QOTD1: It's much better if the deals comes naturally, and not by demand.
QOTD2: As much as I can get. But mainly French and Italian unfortunately…

  • Vinny

QOTD – I would like 0 bottles. Unfortunately for Cult Vines, the people that buy that sort of wine don't tend to do so without press and scores. I hope he has room in his basement for 46 or so cases.

    Other question of the day:
NO! I dont think guests should be made to come up with some sort of offer. That might be appropriate for some of your entrepreneurial guests but what, for example, would you have asked Jancis Robinson to offer? Or Daniel Schuster? I think it would be insulting to ask him to give something away in order to come on your show.

I think the whole idea cheapens the show and takes it in a non-educational, non-cultural direction and makes it more like an infomercial. Fine if they want to but don't ask them to.

  • ONUMello

Nice guest, he reminds me of someone I know but I can't place it. I liked the PS at the end, but was disappointed the Oak Monster couldn't make it to the PS party 🙂
QOTD Gary: no no no not every guest is going to have an offer to bring, and I think that may be a deterrent to some if it becomes policy (although I think setting a trend, something the last two seem to have now started, would be great! I enjoy my poster)
QOTD Mike: That's a bit above my current price range, unfortunately

  • mattgmann

qotd: Leave the offer optional. I'd love to see a lot of guests (farmers/small producers) that a requirement would probably scare off. But for Glengarry Glen Ross wine guys like this, yes, you should absolutely demand a tribute.

  • Allan

I surely miss Kayla28, whatever happened to that, extraordinary gal???

    I know you're still here castello……..

    Tennis anyone?

  • NY Pete

like the ending … good job GV

  • Allan

Did you check up on those old jazz albums????

  • Allan

    GĂĽ nu i seng!!!!

    ; )

  • mattgmann

Gary, I've gotta say this isn't my favorite type of show. Nothing against guests in general, but I could really give two turtle turds about a sales dude who worked out the math and figured he could make some cash on an overpriced wine. Marketing, labeling, hype…..yeah, it sells a lot of wine. He'll probably sell more of his wine for being on the show….good for him.

I'd really like to see more guests who've either been in the heart of the industry for a long time, or spend their time in fields with dirty hands. I think the show with Heidi Barrett was the best show ever. Having guests of her pedigree would be awesome.

AWESOME job with the bonus “real deal” taste opinions after you sent Glengary off in his towncar. That is a great idea. I hope it doesn't scare anyone away from being on the show.

  • mattgmann

I think I missed something Al

  • Allan

    You still rock!!!

    ; )

    Penns rule!
