Gary did a very good job being nice to this guest when all he really wanted to do was pan the wines and the price points. The extra minute tagged on to the end of the episode where GV tells us what he really thinks is a bit sneaky but great nevertheless. I clicked on the link to the twitter page and the last posting was 20th Feb 2011. Go figure

I love stories like: i was in sales, so I decided to start making wines. haha. My local favorite is: i was tired of being a geek in computers, so decided “how hard can it be” to make wine, so off he went. Makes me want to buy his wine. not. haha.
Nice guest, easy talker. not over the top, and not an oaky monster.

giveaway bag! love it. me me me me me me. not the baby outfit, the bag!!!! In fact, Cindery wine should consider selling simple junk included in the free shipping – I mean, there is space in the box. So a wristband for $2 if you get the free shipping, etc.

Nice to learn about Crushpad – nice website, we see these in some areas – one in Virginia, another in Ohio. But it's a good business case for the right customer.

Hey, Gary – do a show on wine GLASSES – I mean, there are many glasses out there. Talk nerdy about the lip, the bowl, the stem, stemless, etc. Rate them on the 100 scale – I mean, give us your thoughts. Personally, I hate stemless, no place to put my wine charm. hahahaha. Jelly jar, crystal – does it matter? Canning jar? line them up and give us your snify snif.

Instead of scoring in front of wine maker – which i agree to – maybe do like on “the island” put it on paper and only share it with us. hahahaha. To read body language would say he was ready to strangle you on the white finish. haha. He was a good guy ! I'd buy a used car from him, no doubt. snicker. (sorry, i have hang up on sales people)

Matt? Matt? who cares what he likes? hahaha. Nice flow of conversation. Matt? We only care about Mott!

QOTD: let guests give offers, and lottery on posts for free junk. trash it up, let's do it. I mean, they want to market, let them pay for it. hahahaha. We WIN! no slippery slope, the world sells, let me get a deal for watching this.

    i like oak,

Nice POST SHOW! OMG, it was GREAT He wasn't silly – he was just positive (oh, you said selly).

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

That's awesome! Have you heard him on Howard Stern, Gary? You would die laughing!!!!

  • Michael C in MKE

Interesting info on grape per ton. I appreciate your geek point of view. I’m totally onboard with terroir, and the sense of place. The quality of the grower, etc… I’m still skeptical on the taste and demand. Who are these people dropping hundreds of dollars on vineyard name alone? I bet dollars to doughnuts that you could blind taste those same consumers on wine half that price or less and many would think it was better or equal in quality. Aren’t there dozens and dozens of people just like this guest who are carpet bagging there way into the wine industry?

  • ChrisNY2

I wonder how many viewers would be lost if Gary stopped scoring wines entirely

  • agentorange

QOTD (#1): No. No pimping please.

Would love to see you work out the math for us and dish the knowledge sometime on the wine making money side: 50 case @ 125 bones per bottle is $75,000. Then, less the cost of grapes, labels, bottles, cellar, distribution, insurance, etc…

Does that come out to negative 20 bones per bottle or what?…

  • Great Show!!!! Love the guests!

  • mattgmann

” I do agree with a few of the comments regarding his salesmanship, little over the top at times. Selling is what he does, so its not surprising.”

Maybe it's his nature, but not an excuse for being a general asshat. It may be the nature of the scorpion the sting the turtle, but the scorpion is still a douche.

  • mattgmann

I wonder what this dude will throw in to get Cult Vines on winelibrary. You could probably bleed him for a used Hyundai and a week at his time share condo in metro Orlando. Don't cave though Gary. At least not until he throws in some Toledo Mudhens season tickets and some frequent flyer miles.

  • mattgmann

    CLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSIIIIIIIIIC!

  • laurieinvt

    6 seconds? We're humans, not microwaves! 😉

  • alexandrecf

Nice show with the perfect end.

QOTD #1: Please don't, it will destroy the guest thing.

QOTD #2 : 125,00 dolars will cost 300 reais or more here in Brasil, too much for me.

  • WineWoman

GV's QOTD: Admittedly, I do enjoy a little freebie or giveway contest, etc. but it's not necessary to make it a guest's requirement. Planting a few Yankee box seats around the NY-NJ area might be nice….(:

Mike Cochran's QOTD: I'm sure I would like the $125 wine, but even at a 30% GARY Promo discount, I'll stick with the 22.22 Boedecker on Cindy.

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

    Howard Stern & Iron Sheik…… That's a Matched Set !!! :o)

  • jeffsjeff

I like the post-game at the end–good idea, GV. I think if you alert guests to the fact that you'll be doing this and then let them decide whether they still want to come on, it's perfectly fair to be gentle on the show and then slam the wine in the post-show. It seemed pretty clear to me that you'd give both of these wines a major pazzzzzz.

QOTD #1: I tend to agree with most everyone that you should keep sales out of the show as much as possible. It's already gotten a bit sales-y lately with Cinderella; forcing guests to think more about the financial benefit to coming on the show (more than they already do) rather than forcing them to think about the educational value they'll provide is, IMHO, a bad decision.

QOTD #2: I kind of wanted a bottle of two until you asked how much I wanted. Might be wise to ease off the pushy salesman thing just a bit.

  • Thursday

    got it

  • paz levinson

Like the show but maybe you can taste the wines in another show and scored them in that moment. It was strange that in the same episode you first was with your guest and then alone…I don't really know what's best. But yes, maybe keep in mind those wines and taste them in another “solo” show.

  • dsallen

Wow. Just when you think Gary V is as real as it gets… he gets real-er! I respect that kind of honesty bigtime.

    QOTD 1: NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

  • Thursday

    love the wrap up…

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Greatest thing I have ever heard!

  • laurieinvt

    GV QOTD: No.
Good job avoiding the air quotes, Gary! 😉
Mike's QOTD: None. I can find Cab Sauv that's a better match for my palate at a fraction of the price (even the discounted price; and I already have, and have listened to, Crush It on my iPod- thank you anyway)
    I liked the wrap-up, btw.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Dave, where is the Crushpad in VA? I would be interested in trying it out. Complimentary bottles for my favorite Vayniacs….and Gary!

  • I loved your 2cents at the end, definitely the way to go when you have guests.

For me, any wine over $35 is over-the-top crazy expensive.

  • pawncop

I really enjoyed this episode. NIce to see someone take the plunge and go for it. I wish him the best.

QOTD #1 – I think it is a bad idea. If they WANT to do something fine, if you are requiring them I see issues that you probably wish to avoid.

QOTD #2 – I would like to try it but I rarely cross that line of $50.00 a bottle – my only little vice – PORT. I will drop a C note for a good port.

Gary I appreciate your approach with the wrap up. Good job.

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

Yo Ray, make a Bottle for me…….. ;o)

  • jlilley

My suggestion for a future guest: Brennon Leighton from EFESTE in Woodinville, Washington. I would absolutely love to see the two of you on screen together. He is a great winemaker with a huge personality and one hell of a great guy. The Spectator is starting to take notice… the wines are pretty epic!
As far as the show goes, my $125 a bottle will go to someone with a 20+ year record of great cabs… maybe Quilceda Creek. I respect that he is following his passion, but no matter how great the vineyard sources, that is a lot of money for a first release.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

You got it brother!!!!!! ; )

  • QOTD; Offers are great, but I don't think it should be a rule.
Good show, liked the two cents at the end.

  • Enjoyed the episode. The “over-selling” didn't bother me near as much as the price. I mean 125 for a 90pt wine isn't even a pipe dream wine. I'd rather pay 200 for a 94 that is something to aspire to.

QOTD1: I think like cellarrat5 said, slippery slope. Maybe they could have to make deals on some sort of merchandise that isn't their wine. Such as the Three Thieves poster.

  • Another great effort. Putting Roussanne on the list. Someday we'll have the “Corsican Bandit Cab.”

I am impressed by his effort. Remember that statistic, 1 in 8 over $14, and he's looking for a “C” note. Wow, thaaaaaat's big ones in my book.

QOTD#1: No. but if they don't have something to offer, you have to tell them they SUCK!

QOTD#2: If Mike wants to give me a $125 bottle of wine, I'll take it, but for now I'm staying in the $10-$20 range.

  • Great show! Been dreaming of crush pad since saw 500 there sovgood to hear a first hand story! I would encourage deal rather than require. If you get enough deals that will pressure guests but I'd hate to lose an interesting guest just because they couldn't make a deal.

  • Altboy97

Agree with a lot of what's been said. Deals are good, but shouldn't required (although a poster seems like a reasonable request). $125 is crazy, but noted how he was willing to discount 30% in a heartbeat. Its nice that he's living the dream and can afford to do it. He knows what he likes and makes it without compromise. Although, I guessing making great wine with the best fruit and barrels in the world does seem to miss a bit of the challenge.

  • JCN

Love the few comments at the end, great way to end the show.

I don't think guests should have to offer anything up. That being said, I love the Show Malbec poster. It's getting framed and hung in my greatroom. Not bad advertising for the Three Thieves brand.

  • Pat__B

QOTD 1: This show is about bringing people together who like to enjoy life and drink wine. It's not a commercial and it's not an opportunity to pitch product, though those things happen occasionally;) There's plenty of time to scour the web for deals on wine. Let's stick with the basics and focus on the product and each other.

Good luck Mike, keep swinging for the fences.

  • Nice show…I would like to see future guests come with an offer for the Vayniacs. I did receive the Three Thieves poster, which was fun!

Loved your comments at the end, as well. This allows you to be a congenial host, and brutally honest.

  • smiledoc

Thank you for the epilpogue… yes another SALES guy gets a little annoying as I get it but yet wish the world was not like that, “waiting on the world to change”, would be waiting a long time, always looking to trust….thanks again

  • carl

    “Dream On, Dream On!”
I Think I will start selling encyclopedia's door-to-door at lunchtime on Wednesdays. I know an Eskimo who is looking to buy some ice. ….Start drinkin' friend, start drinkin' !!!

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

Yo carl, GREEEEEEAAAAAT IDEA!!!! Think i'll go up to the North Pole & sell the
    Eskimos Ice at $125/bucket………. :o)

  • Gary's QOTD: in my opinion, it would depend on the guest; free stuff and promotions are cool sure, however, the guest gets to decide IF he/she is willing, but I believe most will go along, it's fun to share.

QOTD: I would like to try the Cabernet, it is very intriguing at $125 USD.

    Good episode.

  • brianaf

I think that it shouldn't be mandatory to have guests offer a promo. However, I do feel that it should become a tradition and something we can more often than not look forward to. Every episode of Scooby Doo doesn't have a criminal wearing a mask revealing who he really is, but thats what we remember. I think Wine Library should have a tradition, where if they are not on just for them being them (wayne gretzky, Jim Cramer, etc) then they should bring the thunder and offer something. Not because they have to, but because they are following suit with the spirit of the shows new theme.

  • srdonjulio

qotd 1: cool if your guests want to offer a promo but not necessary.
qotd 2: @ $125 per… I'll have to pass. Mike seems like someone I'd like to have a glass of wine with and hang out; kinda nerdy like me. I certainly hope he does well!

  • b777capt

Love To Kalon wines! Let the wine sit for a couple of years and the oak may come into balance a little better. Beckstoffer gets big money for his grapes so the price needs to be high, but Sol Rouge sells his To Kalon for $80 and it is a bargain at that price. Did he say a 30% discount for “Gary”? If so, that brings the price to where it should be.

QOTD1: I don't think you should require a promo fro your guests….encourage it maybe, but don't require it.

QOTD2: I'm maxed out on wine, what with Spring mailers, Cinderella, making the Scarecrow list for the first time, and sharing a friend's Quelcida Creek allocation. Bring the standard price down to the <$80 range and we'll talk next year.

  • I was not fond of the salesman. I thought in 2010 there was going to be less guests and more knowledge.

  • Michael C in MKE

You know Gary I'm usually pro guest, but this guy was a snooze. So what. He buys expensive juice and slaps his own label on it. Comes on your show and tells us we should buy it. Gimme a break. Not a good episode.

  • Nice opening by 'DAveAll': “I love stories like: i was in sales, so I decided to start making wines. haha. My local favorite is: i was tired of being a geek in computers, so decided “how hard can it be” to make wine, so off he went.”

Sales people getting into wine is like Sommeliers getting into wine. I can hear them sitting around one night saying, “I like drinking wine and it seems pretty easy, you just crush some grapes, throw in the yeast and wacko!” This video sums up my opinion…I love the comment “making wine is 49% cleaning shit, 49% moving heavy shit and 2% drinking beer”!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcjVfXBxvdg

  • Michael C in MKE

Thank You for sharing Scott. That was fantastic.

  • Mr hyde

I am not going to build up a fanclub for mr.salesman, but I did want to hear more about HOW he produces his wine and what makes it so different against the others in productions?

MORE FUN FACTS and knowledge about the wines. Educate us!

  • mr hyde

    I totally agree!

  • Oakmon’s BF

A lot of people in the U.S. can?t take advantage of offers either because their socialist state doesn?t believe in a free market.

  • flavasauce

Meh, meh and meh. If you're gonna have a guest I want passion, nerdiness and sincerity. Bring back Beau the True sake guy or how about Sam Calagione from Dogfish head beer? Sales people turned winemakers just make me cringe….sorry but gotta be honest.
