90/100

Gary did a very good job being nice to this guest when all he really wanted to do was pan the wines and the price points. The extra minute tagged on to the end of the episode where GV tells us what he really thinks is a bit sneaky but great nevertheless. I clicked on the link to the twitter page and the last posting was 20th Feb 2011. Go figure

Hi, Ray. I meant CrushPad concept. There is a winery there that you can make your own barrel of wine, that’s all. It’s a great concept for those wanting to make wine, but not spend a Kazillion dollars on a whole winery. http://www.vinthillcraftwinery.com/

  • I nailed your scores. I didn't know there was an epilogue coming up but was waiting to post here in the comments that I guessed you scored the white 87 and the red 90+.
But that happens a lot (I'm guessing for many who have watched almost every show).
I can usually predict your score within a half-point either way based on your reaction and descriptors.

  • QOTD: I'd avoid the need for promos from guests.. doesn't add a huge amount of interest for me and may lead to only certain types of guests on the show. Love the ones with interesting characters who aren't all in the wine biz.

  • MarcBelgium

    A little bit boring.

QOTD. NO, DON'T DO THAT!!!!! I hate promos and stop to buy when they just mention it.
If you buy because there's a promo then you are not right. Just buy what you really want.

  • orangebottle

i like the post game wrap up. is this the first? you were talking very quiet. it's like talking behind his back. so funny. very good show.

  • GermanChemist

    Hi Gary,

well this episode is double edged!
On the one hand I like your new approach to do an “after guest” rating. Because what I want is your true opinion without any kindness due to the winemaker´s presence!
On the other hand I hate the idea to make guests come with special offers. If I want to see the “buy one get one free plus a vacuum cleaner and a dish washer show” I do not watch WLTV but the shopping channel! PLease don´t make that happen!!!
    Take care Steven

Stop using the term socialism in that way. It’s not funny, just plain dumb….as are the american alcohol laws.

  • Did, and they Have Crushpad Bordeaux too. 8000 euro for a barrel plus tax another 8000 for 25 cases, boy, 16 000 euro för 300 bottles? That’s 53 euro per bottle? Hrmm must be wrong, thats making some really expensive wines

  • he probably had a cost of 36 bones for each bottle if one check Crushpad prices. (The Bordeaux is a lot more expensive not under 62 bones)

  • paulkochevar

Pa-leezze with all the salesman bashing! We are ALL saleman(saleswomen) of one sort or anothere in life. He has dropped the cake, spent the time and following a dream…yeah maybe you don't like his style…but don't confuse passion with sales. Maybe I am a little biased as entrepreneur myself…but I think this is simply what Gary refers to as…HUSTLE.

I love to get a deal whenever I can…keep the promos coming!

  • BruceS

I'm in RH's corner, i.e. there were supposed to be a lot fewer guests in 2010 and more wine info. Since this doesn't exactly seem to be happening, I've devised my own solution. If I see a PITA salesman grinning like a damned cheshire at me from the opening shot, I don't bother watching the show and I hope for better luck tomorrow. Easy!

  • Richie

QOTD 1: I think you could do it. However only for people that are in the business. Like wine makers etc.

  • Anonymous

I have had Beckstoffer To Kalon fruit in a 1998 Juslyn Cab and it was
remarkable. But because his pricing is based on yields you can have wildly
varying purity of fruit from the same vineyard. Then when you throw in the
winemaker variable the differential can become even more pronounced (more
wood, less wood, French wood, American wood, new wood, old wood, fining,
filtering, time in bottle before release etc). Just because Mike wants to
make Harlan doesn’t mean Mike IS making Harlan.

  • Anonymous

    sorry for the double post

  • Craig Hamlet

Hey Gary, good show. I like it when a guest puts a high dollar cab out there. That takes some balls. I really want to win that bag.

  • Anonymous

Here I am, rock you like a hurricane. You do as the scorpions have done before you.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, now if only K Murph was selling it, I would buy rotting fish from her!

The grape market is still most defiantly a market. However, there are still people out there who farm the way they have been farming for generations, and charge what they can get. The percentage of people who can?t sell their crop for 20k + a ton, and who might grow close to the quality that you can get for that price are up shit creek. I suppose one cannot escape the laws of economics, but there are still people that broker deals with handshakes as apposed to bags of cash. I am sure I sound like a bleeding heart old school farmer, but wine grape growing and winemaking sounds so manufactured and steely when depicted in such bleak economic terms.

  • Oakmon’s BF

I?ve spent over $40 a few times. It mostly makes me feel like an idiot. I don?t think I?ve ever gone over $50. What really makes me happy is discovering something in the $10 neighborhood that I really like.

  • The very last lurker

Good job, Gary. The white is too hot, the red is too oaky, and both are overpriced. So we'll see less guests in future. 🙂 I prefer brown bag shows, anyway. 🙂 At the same time I wish Mike success in selling his wines (some Bordeaux wines are much more expensive, aren't they).

  • mrpat56

Interesting show, The info on crush pad was good, the wines didn't make me want to rush out. I like white Rhone blends, but can get Treana for much less $. Same with the Cab, I have a lot of small vineyard excellent cali cabs off mailing lists for much less money-
QOTD- I love a promo deal, but Please don't do it here. It contaminates the whole idea of wine library TV. We could miss a lot of good shows because the producer isn't brining a deal, and would have a lot of bad ones with seemingly good promos

  • Anonymous

Yeah, I just re-watched the episode she was on before she worked at Winelibrary and she definitely is kinda cute, and you know she would put it on Cinderella for about 50 or 60 bucks lol.

  • Anonymous

I agree and disagree. I’m not faulting Andy Beckstoffer at all. I actually
applaud him for making the case that grape farming is as important as the
winemaker’s contribution. I’m simply making the case for people paying their
dues. I’m for the Smith brothers at Smith Madrone and Turnbull and too few
more who produce quality product at reasonable prices that I have to assume
make a profit for them. For the majority of the Napa/Sonoma $100.00+ cult
garagistas it’s pretty much a Gordon Gecho case.

She is a 91+ classic beauty which is hard to find these days. She
knows her stuff, or she would not be working there despite all the
haters comments. I feel a new local guest coming on! Give us a behind
the sceans look at WL, what say ye Vayniacs!!??

  • Joss

Love the two cents at the end!

Guests and interview shows are awesome (Armagnac guy was the best recently) and the fun facts are great.

Good plan to have winemakers who obviously have something to sell put their money where their mouth is by offering a hefty discount to WLTV viewers, why the hell not.

  • Anonymous

I agree, at the end if they pay thier dues and make a decent product I
suppose that is what’s important. I would like to see the premium bulk
market for winegrapes a little less cutthroat.

Sent directly from my brain to your computer/cellular device.

  • Anonymous

I could get behind that……bring on the wine wench! I mean that in the most respectful way……really lol.

  • Anonymous

I will definately try those if I find them. I will still try any
wine I haven’t before no matter who producues it.
The wines I have had from the makers who source were mostly
delicious just boring to lowely old me.
I do have to admit there are growers who source some of their
grapes. Again, most of those non estate wines are a little lack luster.
Where I do admit defeat is the American negociant winery A to Z
from Oregon. I have liked every wine I have had from them. They are
    resonably priced as well.

Sent from my current frame of reference in space time.

  • Nik_B

QOTD1 – please don't bring guests on just offering deals.. seems unnecessary and a bit cheesy to me

QOTD2 – weird that he would offer such huge discounts.. they mustn't be selling too well

  • rasjahsun

i like the post wrap up idea very much. good call!

  • Oakmon’s BF

If you crack open a dictionary you might find that government ownership and administration of the distribution of goods to be among the valid definitions of the word. It doesn?t seem dumb to me to use the word correctly. I did not want or expect my choice of words to start a political debate. I didn?t want to challenge or insult anyone?s political views. I apologize if I have done that.

  • murso

You are so in trouble w/ Mike by now! On the other hand, only 50 cases, something very special- Beckstoffer To-Kalon -very nice, and no problem selling that. This stuff is approximated by the old Mondavi Oakvilles, Delectus, and other greats, at half that price point, but the final details are all about what merits this kind of wine it's final price.
Q – please don't get into tie-ins, or promos. I know that we lose the potential of being offered some very special wines, but it stinks of cronyism, and greased palms. Great risk of leaving a very bad taste in many peoples' mouths, and that kind of suspiscion is very difficult to overcome, once you've made that bad impression. Cinderella is cool enough for that. I'm stoked for the Friday offer!
Happy Earth day. I finally saw you in Dirt:the Movie last night, on PBS. Good Job!

  • romtina

I watch the show to learn something new, not to buy stuff. I can't order wine online anyway, because of my state's laws. Many poeple are probably in the same boat, plus there are a lot of international viewers. So no, I would not like more promos and sales pitches… Loved the “two cents” at the end though! Judging by Gary's facial expression, I thought he would give the white wine 70 points, LOL.

  • Wouldn't want a deal from every guest.

Like the post-game wrap-ups. Especially when you have guys like Charles Smith and Randall Graham on, better to see you as a good, straightforward host but giving the actual number-rating later. (Still waiting for a big-ups-to-Ehren-Jordan ep.)

  • late_start

I just don't get the post-game wrap up. Either you score the wine in front of the winemaker or not at all. There is nothing wrong with giving an honest opinion during the show, as always a score is just a number and who really needs one.

  • John_Kenneth_J

qotd1: if the guest wants to give something away fine, but being required to isn't the way to go in my opinion.
qotd2: that would depend on the wine, and based on Gary's description of the cult vines wines, I really doubt that they would be for me

  • notTheFalseD

Well, you're treading a fine line. It seems like a choice between brutal honesty – which might put your winemaker guest on the spot if you don't like the product – and being conciliatory in the presence of the winemaker, which the Vaynerpublic will call you out on instantly. Maybe the Geico Post-Game Report (C) is the answer…

Somehow, I think it would be good to let the guest know in advance that that will be the format, but I could be wrong.

  • MDSmitty2488

QOTD: I don't think that they should be required to bring anything to the table except their wines. I think it might compromise the show and the reason you got into this in the first place Gary. Sounds like those wines wouldn't be for me and the Cab is definitely out of my price range right now. I like the post-game I think that is a really affective way to keep integrity.

  • agreeed Late_start i didnt like how it came off

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

Yo G, Ya gonna invite me on da Show??? I got some Bottled Watered i'm
gonna call Chateau Petrus de la waynooooo I wanna sell for $100/bottle…….

  • mattgmann

Only if I can get a 30% discount

  • mattgmann

I already sent a formal letter to my half assed district representative and will send another to the senate reps. I urge you all to do the same.

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

    Ya gotta Deal !!!!!!! :o)

  • davidemillombard

QOTD: I think you could 'suggest' it to each guest or ask them if they'd like to make an on the spot promotion to see how they react.

Great show, as someone in marketing, I appreciated learning from the perspective of watching this gent come up in a scene and take the steps to brand his wine.

  • Delphi

Highlight of the show was at very end of the two cents…quoting GV “you little me, me, meh”.

    Well it amused me…

QOTD – a moot point? Anyone with enough smarts to get on the show at this stage knows they're reaching a key audience and will look to hustle a little surely!! I would!

  • John_Kenneth_J

I'm going to send my letter now. I hope everyone fights this. It's been such a hard fight to get wine shipping passed in so many states already (I testified in Annapolis last month to try to help get wine shipping passed in MD, which won't happen this year), that just to see that they are trying to do this is such an outrage.

  • Gary,

It sounds like USA has the same antiquated laws regarding alcohol as Canada. Even with the Canadian dollar at par or higher than the US dollar, we pay more than double the price for wines that are considered entry level. Very frustrating for sure.

  • WLTV+(Almost any)Guest+Length greater than 25 minutes = PPPPPAAAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZ!!

  • I can't believe you're close to 1000 videos, I haven't seen most of them but always come by every now and then to see the latest. Keep up the good videos Gary!
