I usually “cure” that sort of thing with a shot of Single Malt (Lagavulin/Talisker???) ; )

  • Allan

Godt forsøg! Hvis du nogensinde skulle få fat i et par stykker, må du godt sende et til mig!

  • Allan

This is exactly what happens when you get old, time evaporates!!! ; )

    LOL.

“Do you know the way to San Jose……?”

OMG I Just followed the Iron Sheik's twitter to his website and watched an unbelievable video interview he did there. I forgot how much I loved this guy. He was perhaps the most entertaining wrestler to ever step in the ring if you ask me. I grew up watching this guy on Canadian All-Star Wrestling (I lived in the UP of MI and I could only get good reception on two channels and one of them was the CBC). A real classic, GV. This guy is like a 48 Taylor-Fladgate!

QOTD: You pulling that wine off of the shelf. Let me explain. When someone pours an old bottle of wine… I smell… uh oh… I taste… something strange. But I just haven't tasted enough wines in general, and certainly not enough wines with age, to know when it is over the hill. We have bordeaux at christmas that my uncle has had in the cellar for 30 years, and some are good, and others ?? I know that it is stupid, but I would be tempted to buy a bottle, at a discount of course, if I knew that you had tasted it and determined that it was dead. I would definitly by a bottle that you could guarantee was corked!
Am I crazy. Or just trying to build my palate?

  • Sean Dawes

    I don't have any arm bands 🙁

Another great episode Gary…keep it up

  • Just Jack

Btw the kid who interviews him is hilarious as well. he begs TIS to put him in the Camel clutch lol!!! The kid is all of 140 pounds. He plays the perfect straight man.

  • redrider21

Biggest disappointment: As a Redskins fan, watching Dallas take Dez Bryant.

  • Just Jack

I don't think that is crazy at all. I think that is passion!! It is no different than GV licking rocks IMHO.

  • Biggest disappointment this weekend: flubbing a song at our choir's concert

Regarding the “Sniffy Sniff” wristband: don't have one yet (hint, hint)

Good episode, even with the bad wines.

“like a 48 Taylor-Fladgate” Now there is some high praise, right there. Geeky praise, but high praise, indeed.

  • Yes I have a sniffy sniff wrist band as well as what I think are the other 4. Black with the green Official Vayniak emblem, Maroon bringing the thunder, Maroon computer logo and the green Vayner Nation statue of liberty. Please anyone inform me if I'm missing any.
QOTD: Biggest disappointment was the horendous showing of the Nittany Lions in the Blue/White game on Saturday! Could be a long season.

That’s not gross. When we go smelting, you always have to bite the head off of the first one you net and swallow. If you don’t do it you’re in for a long night as the boys drink more and more Old Milwaukee and they decide that you are more and more of a feline, if you catch my drift.

Yoko is an enemy of all mankind. She turned John against his band and even a big chunk of his fans. She brainwashed him. I saw her here in Vegas when she opened up Cirque du Soleil’s Beatles LOVE show at the mirage. She went from Hippie to acting like Zsa Zsa Gabore. I can’t stand her. She is extracted and fake with no soul.

The Iron Sheik now, that is another story. He can’t change the world or anything but he can make you forget about it for an hour or two, and that’s all I ask of my entertainers and athletes.

If you really want to experience some off bottles, start buying a bunch of cheap northern spanish wine. The quality control seems to be shit on a lot of them. I had a HORRIBLE bottle of Ergo Tempranillo recently. If I hadn't had the wine before, I probably would have just thought it was bad wine. I seem to remember a garnacha called Las Rocas that I had a flopped bottle of too. I'm partially on the cheap spanish wine bandwagon, but I seem to get a disproportionate number of corked/fucked bottles.

I've had quite a few “dead” wines. A lot of dirty old bottles seem to find their way to me as gifts, and for the most part are long gone. I even have a bottle of 1968 Chateau Margaux in the cabinet that is decoration because I know it's toast. If you want an easy way to pick out some of the characteristics of wine past it's prime, just leave a bottle open for a day or two and taste it.

If they haven't dumped it yet, you might be able to email WL and ask to buy some of that wine for educational purposes. I've seen a fair amount of wine that's definitely dead on winebid for cheap prices. You'll know which ones because they're a bit old and cheap.

Anyone out there, who thought the movie Mondovino sucked???

  • A dumb Rhein king

Right on. I ordered a half dozen Pearl from Andy this year and then got to meet him at the cold climate conference. He is a good guy. Small world.

I agree about the oak. Too often it is over done with these wines that don’t have the bombastic fruit to back it up. I had a LaCresent dessert wine that was so over oaked that all I could taste was wood. I added just a hair oak to my Frontenac; the wine sat with the wood cubes for two weeks. I thought it added some body to the mid palate and helped to subdue some of the wildness of the wine.

    Keep in touch.

  • Like me some welldone Gamay. You should try and get some older vintage Brick House gamay as I know people who have raved about it past the 10 year mark like Jim Anderson from Patty Green. I guess its in the winemaking.

QOTD: My Morning Jacket played a kinda lackluster set due to curfew while in ATL, good show overall except for the Frat party crowd that made its way out, but wanted an epic show after that much time off.

  • CAChristie

First, I have my own question:
How can you know which wines you're supposed to drink now, and which ones have aging potential? I know that a bottle that is much too light is an instant indicator, but other than that I wouldn't really know…

QOTD1: I don't have any wristbands…sad face. I haven't seen any in the schwag store yet, so I'm a bit mystified about how to even get one.
QOTD2: Napping too long to make it to a gig with my marching band..would have been SO much fun as always… Sad faces all around!

P.S. I don't know about many others, but the “air quotes” don't bother me. In my opinion, Gary shouldn't have to try to change himself. There are a lot of things about him that people complain about, but that's to be expected with anyone who has that big of a personality. Can you imagine what the shows would be like if he toned down everything that some people disliked? *shudder*

    Cos d'Estournel 2009.

    It's out there, . . .waiting . . .

    Gary, what's your opinion?

  • No coming strong tomorrow PETE!

  • whats your addy ?;)

  • I DO!

  • It’s very cool that you got to meet Andy, good luck with the young ones when they arrive. We’ll definitely keep a line open, and maybe we’ll even cross paths at a conference in the future.
When we had that tasting a few weeks ago, Andy had some wines from your parts with him…maybe it was right after when you met him. There was one Brianna that was super tropical…total melon and bananna.

Ha! Yeah. Well, let me correct myself. The first half wasn't terrible, until it became a whiny mondavi bash fest. I think they were drinking in the editing room.

  • pawncop

Enjoyed the episode. Have had a Beaujolais Villages that was not bad.

I do have the yellow “Sniffy Sniff” wrist band.

No major disappointments, jsut a very bad weekend at work.

  • Altboy97

Sad, sounds like no show today.

  • mattgmann

    Hey Gary,

I think it's about time for another viewer's choice show. Or maybe a two parter so you can fit a lot in. I'd be interested to see where a lot of the palates around here line up. I also have a bundle of recommendations!

  • Altboy97

Gary V, you're the marketing man, sounds like its way time to do another wrist band. Hopefully not only available with wine packs.

  • paulkochevar

First…I vote to KEEP the air quotes!
    QOTD1: No wristbands for me…yet!
QOTD2: Disappointment…2005 Trivento Eolo Malbec…good showing but Malbec and me just do not get along.
    Great show…good to meet Gamay!
