Phenomenal show, so much to learn from a legend of the industry. I wish this episode was 10 hours long!

  • Kermit, many apologies from Nashville. We're usually better than that!

I think that honestly, people assume foreign is more expensive. They make the same mistake with travel and vacations.

    Thanks for the knowledge!

  • AWESOME shows Gary! Kermit QOTD: I have no idea, I know French wine offers real value, and has for a long time.

    thanks

I answered the QOTD with my own OPINION. When are you old world fanatics
going to mind your own business. Get a life.

Sorry that your world comes to an end when someone disagrees with you. Try opening up a little. I don't think your original comment was very informed.

Gary, what an unbelievable 3 part episode and guest. He touched on what is the problem with so many wines becoming so big and alcoholic, the so called Parkerization or Michel Rolandization of wines making them completely impossible to enjoy with anything but the largest piece of red meat available. Have you watched Johnathan Nossiter's movie Mondovino or read his book “Liquid Memory”? So far this has made me think about history and terroir with respect to wine more than anything. Any chance to get him on as a guest? Your show is the best. You have turned me on to terroirs, lately I am on my Italian fish wine kick. Any shows ever on Ligurian wine, ever had a Pigato?
QOTD: All have mentioned the multiple reasons for the misconceptions but really so much more is reaching the New World than ever before. Kermits comments about Piemondte and I would add Tuscany are valid but they are Italy's Burgundy and Bordeaux. The rest of Italy is so interesting and affordable! Thanks Again for this great episode.

  • chukheadted

great honor to have such a famous guest.

most people think of burgundy/bordeaux/champagne when they hear french wines–which are VERY expensive regions. however, basically the rest of france offers good value.

Love it – great show, would have enjoyed even more!

QOTD – Love many French wines and have found some amazing values. I think many wine consumers just lack the knowledge, education, and confidence to go for it…

  • Alexandre-CF

Gary, what an EPIC episode. just loved it.

keek the adjectives rolling, plz don't stop.

QOTD: In Brazil we just can't find a decent french wine for less than 130-150 reais (US$70), so it's really pricy. for an exemple a 1999 Château de Beaucastel is 610 brazilian reais (something like 300 US Dolars) , so much taxes bullsh**.

    cheers Gary

  • Got a brother there (OR), but I guess I would have a hard time to find a job since I’m in the area of Human Relations 🙂

  • SourGrapesFC

With skin that thin, you'll never develop the tannins necessary for long aging.

Chill out. Have a drink. It's a discussion board on an internet wine show. Sheesh.

  • SourGrapesFC

Yes, it does happen every now and again. I guess I should say it ALMOST never snows in London (and certainly never as much as in Austria, which, if I remember correctly, is south of England). Cheers.

Mr Lynch asked, “Why do people think French wine costs more?” He didn’t
ask for what was true or untrue. He wanted to find out people’s opinion, not
    their objective view of wines.

My post was a response to HIS question, I was not asking for your two cents!
Why do you care if I am informed or not? I hope you have better things to
do. As far as being informed I have tried many well regarded first, second
and third classed growths and I have always been greatly disappointed! You
absolutely cannot tell me that my tastebuds are not very informed, can you?!

Wendy’s coupon? What the fuck is that? I don’t make a ton of money and I
love wine so I have spent most of my extra money trying the well regarded
wines of the world. The Bordeauxs, the Burgundys, the Piedmont’s (besides
Barbera), the Brunellos have all been a giant waste of time for me and my
money. Once again, shelled out the cash for great producers and it was very
disappointing and after you drop $200 on a bottle of something that you want
to pour down the drain, you want punch someone in the face. So yes, when you
pay that much for wine it does matter if it is a little more.

And yes, I love the wines of Spain and Australia! And yes, I love the work
of Chris Ringland! And yes, I trust the palate and scores Jay Miller!

Who the fuck are you to tell me what I should like or don’t like? Mind your
    business.

  • Very enjoyable talk! I agree that Riesling is under appreciated, too.

  • Kevin76

Nice conclusion to a great interview. I love your style Gary. I was also intrigued by Kermit's take on the scoring system and the more I get into wine, the more I tend to agree with him. There are too many variables to justify a 100 point scale. I tend to go more towards the 5 point scale and I wouldn't be afraid to give a wine 5 out of 5 (it must be superb though). Similarly, if it's bad it gets 1 or zero. My two cents for the day.

  • adam_riley

Love this show! Kermit is amazing!

QOTD: At most of American the wine shops I have been to (besides high-end ones), there are 4 French sections: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, and Rhone. The first 3 sections usually contain wines for over $20 (Rhone really does have great value wine). When comparing these to the usually large number of California wines and cheap Chianti's of which many are under $20, people get intimidated. I'm still a huge lover of French wine and am never opposed to dropping 25 bones for a great one (I would probably drop many more for that Gigondas).

  • MarcBelgium

Just three episodes? Why not thirty episodes with this brilliant guest?
    I loved it every second.

  • I think french wines carry the label “expensive” because they were the first truely great wines of the world.

  • Awesome, awesome episode and guest. Kermit seems like a really nice, down to earth guy. I always love seeing or reading about people who have mythic importance in the wine world and turn out to be genuine, friendly people. It contradicts the stereotype that the wine world is filled with snobs and asses. Keep up the great guests.

QOTD: Agree with Bill Heritage. I think France is seen as the oldest of old world wine places, almost the center of the wine universe, so it must be the most expensive. Plus, I think in North America, everyday consumers see french writing and, immediately think it must be expensive, because France represents quality, luxury and fine living in our minds, which isn't always accurate.

  • charlzee

Love how you told Kermit Lynch he made the biggest mistake of his career for not ever tasting a cany bar…whoa

  • Rob B

    Great Episode. Loved it.
QOTD: Don't know why French wines are looked at as expensive. I think there are great bargains to be fround from France.

  • Great guest, loved the three episodes.

QOTD: I think the French wines come across as exclusive due to the difficulty the average consumer faces when reading the label. The perception of an exclusive product translates to expensive. Plus if you view them as too expensive then you have the eternal excuse not to figure out how to decipher the label. I think they are a great value.

  • winemonologues

Outstanding episodes! Thoroughly enjoyed the series. What a wealth of knowledge and experience Mr. Lynch is to all of us. Well done!

  • Dominic C.

QotD: It's an interesting question. I believe it is largely propagated from as earlier mentioned that first growths were the first to hit the shores with which came with a very large premium being first growths. Another maybe that french wine is often associated with french food that is so commonly found with a premium as well with that being guilt by association. Pop culture doesn't really assist with bringing the french wine down from the pedestal people put it on, either.

As for myself, not really believing in the perception with the only belief is whether it's a bargain or not. Bargain is based on two factors:
    – enjoyment extracted from the product's value [enjoyment:value]
    – discount difference from the average cost a buyer has achieved [enjoyment:discount]

Both of which, though primarily the first reason, are characteristics of a millenial.

  • NIWineguy

    and now I can breath

  • qotd – I think the perception of French wines as expensive comes from the press that first growth Bordeaux, grand and premier cru Burgundy, and Champagne get and the lack of marketing of value driven French wines in the U.S. If you look at the classification in Bordeaux, it was originally based on the prices that the wines could command, and I think that mentality has persisted. Like Kermit pointed out, France and Italy have two of the richest wine histories and cultures in the world, and with that longevity comes the reputation of wines like Lafite and DRC in the former and Solaia, etc in the latter, whereas when you mention Australia, people don't immediately think Grange. Oh well, all the better for us who know to seek out the incredible French wines from these places that fly under the radar.

  • kasperhip

QOTD: Why is Gary sooo cool?

  • Allan

Rheingau Riesling this time around G, bitte!! ; )

  • Well, The episode with Heidi Barret is good too and don't forget Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan, the champagne episodes were Gary learn to sabré.

  • TommyB

Here in the UK we get some very good prices on French wines so can't really agree with the QOTD but maximum respect to Kermit Lynch for his general legendryness and ridiculous knowledge and experience with French wines. The man says it how it is…

  • TommyB

Oz Clarke would be an awesome guest to get on the show! Gary, work your magic!

  • tobymarcus

    YES KERMIT!
one of my favorite pairings of all time. at the end of a meal, when i have some read left in my glass, and i have just had a bit of chocolate. the mix of the chocolate and wine is the best!

  • tobymarcus

    Sorry, RED not READ

  • seb10

You are right, it's tough talking with your mouth full of wine 🙂

  • Globex

Gary – this 3 part series is fantastic! It would be great if we could see his wines in a Cindy offer very soon.

QOTD: where can I buy those glasses of his?

  • NY Pete

    where's some new thunder?

  • laurieinvt

Wish I'd been able to watch this on Friday! Outstanding!
QOTD: Maybe because it takes less effort to remember an outdated piece of information than to continue to pay attention and learn as changes occur?

  • RANDINTHECITY

    GARY!!!
    Kermit Lynch!!

    Hands down…best guest…best show..want a part 4!
So interesting..and the vibe was so cool with you both..

I love chocolate & red wine also! By far my favorite pairing….

QOTD: I think its just a rumor gone mad, to further popularity of US Wines…

Thank you for bringing such awesome wine & conversation to this mini-sode.
    XOXO

  • Watching you for years Gary and all your shows are great. This three part interview just took it to another level. The best show EVER for wine geeks (me) and wine lovers (my wife) combined. Thank you and Mr. Lynch.

QOTD: Old traditions are hard to break. That means we have to go out and dispel them by trying more French wines that are very inexpensive.
