Funny…this guy obviously knows his stuff, makes great wine, and is a decent geezer. But! He’s the most boring guest ever on WLTV. GV struggling to keep interested for most of this episode. I’d love to try the wines but just don’t lock me in a room with this guy…zzzzzzz

    I'm in.

  • castello

    two!

Thanks for highlighting one of my faves. I had Two Hands, Bella's Garden, for the first time three years ago – this wine is totally crushing it! Everyone I introduce it to loves it – from the Gardens to Angels' Share, it all tastes good. The best part is the $32 bottle price of the Share gets you the essence of the Gardens for less than a quarter of the price. “Hands” down, some of the best Australian shiraz I've had (second only to top echelon Buller). I love this guy's story too, a great ode to passion.

Have had a few Two Hands wines, good stuff. http://www.winelx.com

  • mattgmann

gonna have to watch this one later………

  • Woot! De-throned!

Anyhow, looking forward to seeing this as I've been quite anticipating purchasing one of their wines!

  • Yet another (two part interminably long) guest episode = PPPPPAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZ!!

Next thing you know, there will be Cigar Library TV!

    Edwardo

  • Lot's of guests lately, good ones but ( like this very laid back aussie), I miss a better game plan, brown bags, not brown bags, no guests, guests, short epsiodes long episodes!!!!. Well it's good to mix it up, but heads up is also good and renegging on different promises is not god in the long run. Sorry, I'm a bit of a grouchy old man today (I'm a GOM) maybe becasue I don't tasted any wine and had to do washing up, dinner and dishes on the same evening.
Oboy quick pooring here. And faster and faster talking, How long have they been there tasting 🙂

  • castello

Another long 2 parter! I love it.

  • hear, hear.

  • laurieinvt

Will watch after supper! Great timing- we're focusing on Aussie wines for our upcoming tasting!

  • rwino

My favorite Two Hands wine is the 2006 Cabernet “Charlies Patch”. It's from Napa though, same producer? It brings the THUNDER!

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • drt999

Interesting guest . . . but maybe next January Gary will promise fewer shows, so that we actually get 10 a week. . . .

  • NY Pete

two hands … good stuff GV … way to keep bringing the thunder!

  • lizzy43

Loved the show. Very interesting guest. Way to go Micheal on sticking to your guns and being who you are. There are a lot of copycats out there. I love the unique wines that reflect where they are made and the man who makes them. Thanks Gary once again for continuing to educate us about wine and those who make them. You bring the wine world to me for free and I appreciate it, at this point in life with kids in college we cannot get out there and pay for classes too often but I can tune in to WLTV and learn something. Props to you Gary.

Now this is more like it; a guest whose wines those of us tuning in from outside the US can actually get hold of!

  • srdonjulio

gary… you're on a roll. great guest! what a wonderful approach and philosophy to wine making.

  • johnfarrin

For the life of me, I don't know why you even bother checking in. Do you enjoy being disappointed?

  • johnfarrin

Oh good, found some more money in the budget for guests even though I wouldn't want to be a guest within a month of Kermit.

  • Cool guest. I like how he is really into what he does, way to crush it.

  • mattgmann

I'm pretty sure these guests would be paying gary to be on the show if there was any money involved.

  • johnfarrin

    I was being facetious.

  • mattgmann

I have to admit I'm getting tired of expensive Australian Shiraz. I really don't understand the premium prices coming from down under and I refuse to buy into what I see as over priced wines. Honestly, I've never had an australian wine I'd pay more than $25 for.

  • kv47

Michael's enthusiasm is great to see!! Gary, loving the recent shows. just a thought would be cool if you do like 2-3 weeks of shows where in each show you have a guest who is a winemaker from a different region / country. Waiting for Part 2.

  • guymandude

Good guest, always cool to hear how they start up.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Two Hands is probably one of my favorite producers and can't wait to learn more about them. Great choice, Gary!!!

Now, time to watch the episode…

  • steve r

there are quite a few that are worth more than 25 dollars but maybe not for your pallette i love the molly dooker carnival of love that runs like 115 if you can find it and is worth every penny

  • Just Jack

It took me a second lol.

  • steve r

i love love love gnarly dudes i have multiple bottles in my vino temp. at 25 or so us its a awesome aussie shiraz. i also really love the reisling they make called the wolf very interesting melon notes on the reisling. their fortified wine is also quite nice. i very much enjoy all the wines i have had from two hands

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

I'm loving this episode! Michael know his stuff and I am glad that he is not trying to mimic others in the industry. Looking forward to Part 2.

PS – His Muscato, “Brilliant Disguise” is a great dessert wine. I had a bottle not long ago and enjoyed it as a change of pace. With 14g residual, it still doesn't come across as too sweet.

  • john

    pumped for part 2!
    love it.
can't wait to hear what year the ares is….that wine needs time.

  • orangebottle

Another great guest who knows what is going on, very personable. Wine world is huge, I love these conversations about how one start their business and what their take on the wine making styles. We can learn so much from them. Thanks Gary, can't wait for part 2.

  • laurieinvt

Whoa! Part way through this I ran to get my crib sheet on ideas for our tasting and to look again at what I had picked up so far: yup, Two Hands '08 Gnarly Dudes and '08 Angel's Share for the Shiraz component. How cool is that?
Kevin at Shelburne Wine and Coffee was pretty enthusiastic about these- we'll see how they play out with the group.
Now it's even more fun to listen to Michael! Thanks!

  • orangebottle

    that is a great idea.

  • digitaltaper

I'm not usually a fan of guest show, but this guy is great. Can't wait to see the 2nd half. I had my first Two Hands about 6 months ago (don't recall which one but it was a 2004 vintage around $32). I saw the 2005 Gnarly Dudes over the weekend at my local shop. I just ran over and picked up a bottle (26.99 NY). The nose definitely has some funk and barn yard going on. I remember the 2004 being VERY stinky and meaty. There is plenty of red fruit going on here, but the acid is a bit much. The tannin's are moderate and I could go for a bit more. Alcohol is definitely noticeable on the way down. I may try a 2008 when I see one, but I'm gonna pass on Two Hands for a while. For the price per bottle, I'd rather go else where.

  • Year of the guest continues! But this guy seems like a good dude. Really enjoyed the conversation, looking forward to part II, and definitely interested to see what he asks for QOTD!

  • beardedmystery

Great stuff! Really digging all the recent guests you have had on. This is like adult 3-2-1 contact stuff and I love it.

And “The Big Lebowski” best movie ever. I've got to give gnarly dudes a try followed by a couple White Russians.

  • liko sf

    Rinsy rinsy!

Great show so far. Looking forward to part 2.
It's nice to see more balance coming out of AUS.

  • mattgmann

I had the 06 mollydooker. Very nice wine, but not my cup of tea. I know a lot of people really liked it. The “deliciousness factor” was outstanding, but it still came across a little shallow in complexity for me. Don't get me wrong, it was a treat of a wine, but imo not worth half of the asking price.

I can dig a fruit bomb now and then. I even dropped $50 on the 07 El Nido Clio the other day. I, in fact, enjoyed the 06 Clio more than the mollydooker (but I like the dooker name better). I'll wait to open the Clio though till I have some people over. I can dig the fruit, but one or two glasses is enough for me.

  • NJ Big Chris

Great show… looking forward to number 2. This is a guest I would like to see again! Very interested in his take on white wines.

  • SamKw

Interesting guest, not the least because he's the first one I've seen to pour wine for GV and not the other way around!

  • larbear

What a treat to put a face and personality to a wine I really enjoy. A few episodes ago there was a QOTD about our favorite Ausie wine. I said Two Hands (Bella's Garden) and John Duval (Entity and Plexus).

  • Capt_M

Two hands wines are fine wines, really awesome wines. All worthwhile and very much worth their value.

  • whoo boy, late night dinner, was working on the barn all day, this should be a good one..

  • A dumb Rhein king

Looks like another interesting two parter.

Yeah, label does come into play. Most of the time anything flashy or in a different kind of bottle is not going to get chosen. Not that this prejudice hasn't been wrong in the past, but a majority of them have been flabby or off balanced in my experience.

  • njc2o

two part episodes drive me crazy.. just want to see the end already!

  • Altboy97

Big wine, big personality. Maybe you could license the WLTV franchise to him in Aus.
Looking forward to the 7/10 thing. Sounds like a great concept, can't wait to hear details. Stopping by the ole WL tomorrow to pick up my last couple orders.

  • GV said in the comments that this was going to be a guest-heavy week. Sorry, some of us find it educational. Hmmm, interesting idea about cigar library, but then he'd have to do a deal with this guy…but he's a sports card dealer, so there may be some play:

I love hearing a wine maker say, “it's just a drink. Too many people take this stuff too seriously!!!” Amen, mate!
