Great show. It’s good to see a winemaker so obviously delighted to receive praise from Gary. He looked so proud

Gary thank you, I love this wine and yes the Petite Syrah is AMAZING….. I buy wines that once I taste I love and I have been trying to buy enough to drink a little now and store some as well. Have you eer tried Palmaz Cab? WOW….

Thank you for the show and as always keep it up we love you as much as you love us.

  • Allan

    Agree 110%

Sasha needs to make an appearance really soon!!

  • Allan

    ; )

    maybe lizzie? ; )

  • Allan

    “The times they are a-changin'…..”

Now's the time for Rosé to leap forward. It's vastly underrated for what it is!

  • Just Jack

Maybe they are trying to get another vintage into the bottle. Misha will need a little brother to pick on when she gets a little older.

  • Oakmon’s BF

Gary reads the comments. A Vayniac knew of this guy and mentioned it. Gary followed through on it.

It was Charles E. in episode #851.

  • YoungDave

Captain Crunch! I had no idea about the connection with C.G. Di Arie. I may have to order some of his wines from my local distributor and do a tasting menu including some Captain Crunch-crusted fritters of some kind… that would be EPIC! Cheers!
QOTD: I buy anything that is interesting, innovative, and new to my palate, ABSOLUTELY including varietals that are planted in new climates and regions for that grape.

  • Allan

    We need a Gary Jr.!!!! ; )

He could be on the show, when he gets old enough. Ep#2381: on the show today; Gary’s son Jerry?!?!?! ; ) Now that would rock!!!!

  • mattgmann

High on the list, but they only seem to be available seasonally. So, they get knocked a point:)

And all the whole grain adult cereal bullshit my girlfriend eats can go to hell. I want sugar and marshmallows and most importantly, a secret decoder ring at the bottom of the box.

  • Richie

QOTD: I usually try new stuff and if I find a great wine I buy a few bottles of it.

  • mattgmann

You had any good rosés lately? I've been drinking quite a few lately and none very good.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, yeah. Now I suppose you’re going to give me work, wife and kids
rationale that make shortcuts okay. Priorities Castello, priorities! 😉

  • Anonymous

FRRREEESSHHHH AIIIRR, thats the best part of the show when she does her intro. Someone should remix that.

  • QOTD: I'll try to buy things I haven't tasted before, regions, countries, varieties and nowadays i buy two bottles of everything, because when I found a great wine and tried to get another it always were out of stock.

  • Chaim has that “Albert Enstein” look of genius in his eyes. The lights are on and everyone is home. Yet for a man that is so science educated, he seems to have this “seat of your pants” way of making wine. I like the forget the brix meter let me taste the grape approach.

QOTD: People make me crazy at work. They buy labels and prices. I sell lots of SEBEKA to cat people, any guesses why? Also, people will come in to buy wine for a gift. I try to convice them to buy a couple of bottles at a great price but they refuse stating; ” I think I need to spend more money.” Come on folks. What the Hell? At the end of the day I just laugh.

    very weird…….

  • Allan

    Not too many. : (
One i always come back to is Peter Lehmann Weighbridge Rosé.
I like that very much indeed. : )
    Cheers mattgmann!

I really enjoyed this post. I have read over a few other posts you have up and I will say you do a great job of blogging. I will be looking for new post daily…Keep up the good work! I invite you to see my post, I hope you will find interesting too.

  • Allan

    Yep!

  • DaveyJohnson

What a great show. There is something about Mr. Gur-Arieh that is pretty special. Thanks for this show

QOTD: I buy wine from people i trust and like. I have been to Napa twice and buy wine, and continue to buy wine, from the vineyards where i enjoyed the people and learned about the wine. I buy wine from Gary V for the same reason.

  • Oakmon’s BF

    Thank You Charles E.

  • Capt. Crunch – WOW!

Buying wines, I know so, so little that the brand doesn't mean so much to me. I don't know enough. So I'm open to trying new stuff from Joe Wine Grower to the Big Boys.

    Love this show and Arie

  • zanne_70

QOTD: Some women buy shoes & handbags – I buy wine. Period. But an acceptable vice because at least it's something you can share right?

  • lawrenceleichtman

While I don't get the chance to taste as much as GV, I try to sample about 2-300 new wines per year at different stores or events and that is usually the basis for my buying. I'm not wedded to any region for a particular grape though I do get bored when all of the me too wines show up from the same region that don't really show much difference from wines already out there. For re-buying, I usually stick to the ones I have liked already but every vintage tends to be different and one year may be so different that I don't like that particular brand. I have set a goal to taste as many grape varietals as possible in this short life. Nowhere close yet.

  • CdrSteveJones

I've been to this guys winery a couple of times. Wonderful place. Sierra Foothills zins and sangios rock. His PS is stunning. He has access to a part of the 1869 Zin vineyard, oldest US vines.

  • Michael C in MKE

QOTD: I don't get pumped about brands. Vintages change, winemakers change, and my tastes change. I'm always trying something new.

  • scottEJ

Thanks guys. Capt'n Crunch was certainly a part of my childhood. Especially w/crunch berries. The peanut butter wasn't half-bad, either.

QOTD: From the looks of my collection, I go in many different directions when it comes to picking and choosing my wines. I will, however, shy away from very bad vintages and over-hyped/over-priced producers. However, being a massive traditionalist, I usually stay away from screw caps.

As usual Just Jack I think you nailed it! There is no doubt that we all love Gary trying three wines, going apeshit on the tasting notes and spending quality time with us Vayniacs. However, Most of the recent jaw dropping shows have been with guests. There are at least three guest shows under the “favorite episode” section; furthermore most of the shows that people rave about have guests in them! The dichotomy of peoples opinions both in overall quality of episodes and quality of certain regions on this blog are astounding.

You live in Sacramento Randal? I thought I was the only one on this blog! Hometown Vayniac pride!! Ever make it down to lodi? If so, you should stop by the winery sometime.

  • Just Jack

Gary and Jerry would indeed be cool. But, if I was a gambling man, i would bet that GV is too traditional for that and will go with Sasha jr. It’s just a guess but GV hero worships his dad (with excellent reason I might add).

  • Just Jack

cr5 I could not agree with you more about the quality of postings here. The combination of knowledge, humor and good manners is really quite astounding for an open comment section. In short it is simply a collection of really good people. Even NY Pete :-).

  • giancarlo73

    yes!!!

  • Allan

That was a bit weird! Thnx for your two cents, they matter greatly to me… ; )

  • Allan

Just to see GV’s face if it’s a boy, would be enough for me…… Sasha jr. YEAH! Let’s do this Gary?!?!?

  • waynooo

YEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAW, Cap't Crunch in daaaa HOOOOUUUUUUSSSSSE !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • plcb

    How could you possibly misspell Cap'n Crunch?! It's not Cap't it's Cap'n.

A long story about myself is that I almost went the career route of Food Science. While studying Microbiology and Molecular Biology, I took Food Microbiology and another food science elective. Experimenting and creating are similar in both fields.

    QOTD: Experimentation!! Exploration!!

  • Hal Alter

Chaim and his wife Elisheva are such nice and beautiful people. That they run such a great inventive beautiful and hospitable winery is not a surprise. Wines are their passion and they work very hard for not just on the wines, but also on the entire wine experience.

Wine lovers should make it a point to drop in at their tasting room in Amador County.

For a special treat join the wine club and participate at the open houses at the winery. and taste and order the very special cub wines.

QOTD We love to try new things and wines recommended by friends. Spread the word !

  • So many wines, so little time. I rarely drink the same wine twice because there are so many to sample. I like to find half bottles so I can purchase a greater selection and expand the palate.

  • cellarrat5

At the end of the day thats really all you can do, people have thier spending habbits.

  • waynooo

I know what Ya mean. The last Dozen Roses I've had ALL taste like Water……

  • cellarrat5

In my opinion it a hard style to make, you have to please the white drinkers and to a certain extent the red drinkers. But something tells me your not their typical pallet they are trying to reach.

  • Craig Hamlet

Hey Gary, another good show with a charming guest. I especially like that two of my favorite varietals brought some thunder. QOTD: I am getting to the point that I won't try any new wines unless I can taste them first or if Gary gives them a good review. But sometimes I will try an established wine if it comes from a great vintage like 2000 Bordeaux or 2004 Brunello.

  • SCO007

Great show!! How did you gloss over the ranch dressing???? Tell a few young uns that the guy who made Cap'n Crunch and ranch dressing made a wine and BLAMO you have them hooked.

Don't do the Malbec. There is cheap, good Malbec out there. Do more with the Tuscans.

My wife is a food scientist, now I might be able to get her to watch the Thunder show with me now that there is someone she can identify with.

  • guymandude

That's ironic, he makes wine and the Cap'n Crunch connection of episode 734.

  • corkscrew

Never heard of these wines, love a Petit Sirah. Good guest. QOTD-I buy wines for the most part that I have some idea either from a rating or past experience, that way it really cuts down on buying bad wine. http://www.winelx.com

  • QOTD: my buying strategy if i am going to a liquor store or a wine shop is normally to buy wines that are regionally strong or well known and then in the price range that is acceptable for what it is.

on the other hand if i am traveling and doing wine tasting i am much ore experiential and will try everything and buy whatever tastes great as long as it is worth the price.

  • Ceceliaann

What a wonderful story to meet the “developer” of Captain Crunch. He has an amazing story. Thanks once again Gary for motivating us! I live in Arizona and this story going back many years made me smile about a fabulous person born in Turkey that immigrates to the United States of America! U R amazing……

  • KVM1985

    I'm loving the guests!

QOTD: I look for anything I've never had (be it varietal, region, ext) in my price range (which is unfortunately really low). I also make sure that if there are ever any tastings going on in any stores I always taste everything, just to have as much exposure as possible.

  • Johny: I had a few Turkish wines at Turkish Kitchen here in the city. I had an 2008 Ancyra Kavakedere (this was red, though it’s made in white form as well I think). Very intriguing, to say the least. Paired fairly well with the food we ordered too.
