EP 865 Laid Back Friday with a Vin Jaune

Gary Vaynerchuk is back on the couch for a Laid Back Friday with a very interesting wine, Vin Jaune. This wine is made from 100% Savagnin and aged for 6 years under a veil of yeast.

Wines tasted in this episode:

Thank you for joing my crusade Randall, I don't feel so all alone. Now it's a two man crusade. Cheers!

  • This is the first review I've watched. I was a little surprised, and yet not. I usually don't care to give critique but perhpas I am a little bored, and who knows, maybe you'll appreciate what I have to say. I thought it a little appauling, the way you handle the glass. Of course, each to their own. As I have been introduced to, and it seems that their is some logic, as wine lovers greatly respect what they drink, is that one should never touch the glass itself, as the body temperature then influences the wine. So, in fact, one should hold the stem as close to the base as possible, if not even use the base itself, which is a little extreme. However, your groping the glass seems a bit uncouth. As suggested below, by Northernwiner, and is relatively common knowledge, which perhaps you take as given knowledge on behalf your public, many of these wines are developed for certain types of foods, and often times even particular cheeses, or other foods, as well as seasons. 96.00 dollars is something, but it is an import, and aged. It isn't exactly a 2000 dollar Rothschild, and I certainly wouldn't want to miss you hacking over a bottle. The last thing I don't like to mention is that your comparisons with petro oil and caramel are not envigorationg, and quite the contrary. Normally, I would consider it that you don't know what you are talking about, but I am sure you only need to work on expressing yourself a little better. As well, don't you think it would go down better if you got the hang of a few languages, just enough to pronounce the few words and names you use, which are indeed French? I mean, 'vin' is a French word, and anyone into wine can appreciate pronunciation. Have Spanish wines become a hit in the states yet? Anybody who wants a little knowledge on them can contact me.

    πŸ˜€ I do loves me a challenge!!

  • LOVED the nerd-o-meter hitting red on this episode. Jura whites are, while not my FAVORITE wines, are some of my most profound wine drinking experiences.

QOTD: I'm visiting San Fran this weekend, so I'll be looking for a small production Rutherford Cab with dinner tonight.

  • Lonnie,
While I appreciate the time someone takes to leave such a long, albeit poorly written, comment, I have to say that your approach to wine (and your criticisms of Gary's approach to wine) is EXACTLY the reason why people have been intimidated by wine for centuries.

Your outmoded, archaic and elitist approach, with arbitrary reminders of “This is how you hold the glass, these are the words you use to describe wine,” etc., has been putting off many people from drinking wine for too long, including myself.

I know hundreds (yes hundreds) of people who have been transformed by Gary's approach, and finally overcame the intimidation so many people like you have imposed on the rest of the wine drinking world.

Just for this, I'm going to crack open a '96 Chave Hermitage tonight (which you probably think is abominably early to drink), and drink it right out of the bottle. I'm sure I will get some notes of sheep poop early on, but as the wine aerates, it will transform into twinkies, hostess coffe cake, and strawberries dipped in marmite.

Wine is too good and holy to be enjoyed with such tension, I recommend you try letting go some of it.

  • πŸ™‚

  • Lonnie thnx for your thoughts, I respect them, I do!

  • Thank You my friend πŸ™‚ Blind tasting anyone? πŸ˜‰

Just finished reading your book. LUV'd it! Had to check out your video blogs. LUV'd it too!

I'm training for a marathon and after a long run in hot, muggy Tulsa, I'm unfortunately stuck drinking fruit flavored pedialyte. πŸ™

  • Going North Fork Long Island this weekend. Macari Dos Aguas.

  • DAveAll

good show. nice to learn and point me to something new, not sure i'm gonna try it ever though. Nice to learn about the French “yellow wine” – the unfortified Sherry.
qotd: Corvina and Valpolicella for spaghetti night, and Meritage Blanc for Sunday afternoon with friends, then Zin for burgers Sunday evening.

  • DAveAll

wow. i learned even more. thanks. didn't see that in wikipedia!

  • mattgmann

bwaaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha. Hey clown, I'm sure you are a master sommelier or something, and you certainly have your merit badge for uninformed commenting. Take your wine misconceptions and pretentious ignorance back to the chicken shack and watch about 100 more of Gary's episodes before posting again. Everything that just poured from your facehole is what everyone here dislikes. Opinions are great, but uninformed dribble disguised as helpful criticism is insulting and a sure sign of douchebaggery.

Would you tell a professional baseball player to use two hands on his mit in the outfield? No? Then why the fuck would you criticize how a professional wine taster holds his glass. Hey einstien, why don't you go get a thermometer and stick it in a glass of wine and see how quickly the glowing heat of a human hand heats up a glass of wine. Newflash scrogger! Not any faster than you drink it. Glass is an insulator, and aparently so is your skull.

I'll be sure to contact you for some real spanish wine knowledge just as soon as every knowledgeable person on earth commits suicide and I lose all memory of wine and what a turd you are. Thanks for the offer though.

  • Randall

πŸ˜€ Hey mattgmann, is that a “scrote” “blogger”?

Great Show Gary, I have become a lurker myself as of late. Since watching your show i have really gotten into drinking all types of wines.
qotd- Since it's my b-day tomorrow-“The Show” 2009 Malbec while I watch some NY Red Bull vs Juv, than off to Bern's Steakhouse; somehow I think I be able to find something of Interest via their Bible of wine, maybe a Palvac Mali!!!

  • Wonderful show! Lurker here, but I fully intend to be posting more! Keep up with all the weird nerd wines!

QOTD: 2004 ChΓ’teau La Vieille Cure bordeaux. It's my first legit bordeaux I've had since I've started drinking 2 years ago. I bought it days after my 21st b-day and I've been sitting on it waiting for a good enough excuse, and I figure why not this weekend! Here's to old things that are new to me!

  • I have already drank a LaMarca Prosecco (very dry, very good!), Louis M. Martini Cab Sauv (delicious!) and, my favorite thus far, a Don Miguel Gascon Reserv Malbec (YUM!) What did YOU/are YOU going to have, Gary???

    P-Hilly

  • Easy there matt. It's first impressions first mistake. To think that this is crude, just like Lonnie is making that mistake. If he watched 800 epsiodes he would know that GV is like this all the time and as absolutlahmi points out it is this that make people curious about wine. But instead of alienate this new commentor, embrace it and try to point out that WLTV is not a sommelier school och or a fine wine and dine party, but everyone is welcomed.

  • I'll bring a red πŸ™‚

    Hi, Gary!
I just discover your wine library. this weekend I got a romanian wine, Dry Muscat – Jidvei. Have you tried it?

  • andreea

romanian wine: dry muscat – jidvei

  • Randall

Yeah, Allan, not everybody is going to “get it”. Too bad for Lonnie, stuck in his ivory tower and all…

  • Randall

Yess!! Ok, now… This next part is VERY important. We’re going to need the street address and the exact number of bottles of Gulden Draak in the fridge. This is for research purposes only, you understand…
p.s. Seriously, WineTechie, if your taste in wine is as good as your taste in beer, then you are THE MAN!! πŸ™‚

    QOTD: Leinenkugels Red

  • ERog

Someone may have asked this already, but could it be that this wine is simply too young? I wonder if the petrol-like flavors would dissipate over time. Maybe that's what's off-putting?

QOTD: A 2008 white Bordeaux from Chateau Graville-Lacoste

  • Maybe to high expactations, but the review is here
