EP 865 Laid Back Friday with a Vin Jaune

Gary Vaynerchuk is back on the couch for a Laid Back Friday with a very interesting wine, Vin Jaune. This wine is made from 100% Savagnin and aged for 6 years under a veil of yeast.

very much so, I’ve only had one and it needed food and was great when with it.

  • John__J

there are entry level vin jaune’s, they are under the Arbois, L’Etoile, or basic Jura appellations. The ones from Chateau-Chalon are the higher tier ones, and only for vin jaune

  • John__J

They are if you get the right producer and vintage, and at the prices they’re at you wanna research it a bit 1st. Or like Gary’s one it may not be worth it

  • John__J

They are awesome if youo get it from the right producer

  • John__J

I agree, I think they need a lot of age time, and from a great producer to be worth it

  • John__J

ones from the Arbois, L’Etoile, or Jura appellations aren’t as pricey, but you got to be picky about the one you get or it won’t be worth it. They’re very hit or miss from what I’ve seen

  • John__J

Very hit or miss wines, but the good ones are really great

  • John__J

It’ll definitely get better, I think that’s too young in my opinion. They’re really hit or miss wines anyway, you gotta know the vintage and producer before getting 1 so your money isn’t wasted. They should have food too. But when they’re good, they’re really good.

  • So Vin Laune eh? Another day another bit of knowledge. Thanks Gary. Next get some Moulin Touchais another very remarkable wine.
QOTD: I'm treating my girl to a very high end dinner and gonna serve 1990 Chateau Pichon-Loungeville Comtesse de Lalande. I think that will enough this weekend.

  • Chris in Kingston

QOTD: I am going to be drinking some of my homemade mead (a.k.a. honey wine) this long weekend. I have a few varieties bottled (black cherry, buckwheat & ginger, pomegranate and a plain mead), and I might make several more small (1 gal) batches this weekend as well.

  • Thanks for the past 865 episodes dude…and thanks for bringing back the laid back couch!!

    QOTD: Sake

I guess ir must be the other commentor here, Ken.
John J did you change your handle?

That's not what I'm talking about lol!! Although if none of you have ever had a sparkling red, they are quite good.

I'm talking Schramsberg, Iron Horse, Argyle, Kluge, etc… I mean if we can have entire episodes devoted to Cava! Cava man! Why can't our American Houses get a little love from the G-Man. I said at the beginning of the year I was going to bring this up more, but sadly I have been a slacker! No more. Come on Gary, lift the embargo!

  • John_Kenneth

Yeah I was pretty surprised when I saw it, and peeing my pants is great way to put it when it comes to yellow wine lol. Too bad Gary didn't get a great one, the one from Caves Jean Bourdy is the way to go from what I've seen online.

  • John_Kenneth

I had pretty much given up lol. It was awesome that Gary got one at all, too bad it wasn't great, cuz there are great ones out there. They're just near impossible to find in the states.

  • John_Kenneth

It totally needs time to evolve, more so than most any wine I've come across. You have to be picky with producer and vintages too, especially at the prices they command. That's if you can even find one.

  • Randall

    Marry me!!

  • Gio

Thanks, GV, for another great episode. I really like the one-wine show, under 10 mins. QOTD: heading for Austria soon on holiday, so drinking a little GV this weekend!

  • Phil G

    Love visiting Nerd City USA.

    Love Mott's story.

QOTD – not sure, have a great weekend!

  • Randall

They have the technology, they CAN rebuild a better beer… BUT THEY DON’T!! They’re only interested in profits, NOT spending the extra $$ on more and better ingredients and making a decent product. Quite generous, btw, on the 48. On the beer judging scale (50 pt. scale), that would be a -2!! HA!!”Fizzy, cold yellow water… Budmillercoors.”

  • Randall

Where did you say you were again… 🙂

  • Randall

    Good call!!

Wow, Gary, you've done a Vin Jaune show before doing a Madeira show. I know you did one Madeira (a Rainwater I think? — boring) a while back, but I've been asking for some time for you to do a Madeira show with a vintage Madeira (hopefully something nice and old) at the end. Madeira is nerdy and delicious, plus it's a very historically significant wine for the US and the world wine market in general. I know WL doesn't carry any vintage Madeira, but I think you can splurge for the Vayniacs. I seem to remember hopping on the “you should do a Vin Jaune” bandwagon a while back, so I am happy that you've done one. I just wonder how it's taken priority over Madeira.

Anyway, thanks a lot for the show. I am happy that you tasted this wine. I've been considering buying it for a while. Maybe I'll just get a nice Fino Sherry for much less money and pretend it's yellow. I do wonder what happens to these wines when they get old. I read somewhere that a producer says not to drink the wines until they're quite old. I'm sure they don't get delicious, but maybe they'd be less “challenging”?

My weekend is Sunday and Monday, and I don't know what I'll be drinking yet. I'll open something nice, though.

Nice show! I kid you not, just from watching this show my wine-jargon / wine-dictionary has gone from 2 words to bajillion words! Today I add a new one- Vin Jaune!

QOTD: It's time for some nice tea during the day and guinness at night 🙂

  • Michael C in MKE

Nice show I didn't know about Vin Jaune.

QOTD:Cans of “Supper Club” in between plays at second base.

QOTD: I'm drinking the 2007 Laborie Limited Collection Shiraz and its easy sailing.

  • Cool_Dave

Yea, I am interested in ths very rare wine.
I very nearly fell over when I saw the title.
You have been vindicated my friend. It is a shame it was not a better
    one.
Next we need Wayno The Wine-o as a guest Vayniac. That ! Would be
    classic!!

Re Question of the day: Either cehenin Blamc from South Africa oe Sauvinoin Blanc. Probably both. Ha! I pretty much stay away from anything over 20 bones.
Also thanks I had not heard of Vin Juane either

  • QoTD – I'll be trying one of the bottles of the Cleavage Creek I got in a few days ago. Probably the 2007 Tracy Hills Secret Red.

  • John Lorenz

Anniversary today. Pulled out 02 Peter Franus Cab to take to Flatiron in Omaha. Going to syrah tasting at Brix before dinner. But also been drinking a few craft beers i got on sale during American craft beer week.

    QOTD: Tokaji

  • Cool_Dave

Keep asking for Madera for two years solid and Gary MIGHT do one.
    ; )

  • Cool_Dave

This Friday I finished a Box Car syrah I was drinking during the week. I opened a La Vieille Ferme southern Rhone blanc for my wife to cook with Friday night. It was cheap ($ 7.00) but about an 85. Good mouthfeel and acid and nose but short finish and a lttle out of ballance but for the money I like it better than KJ or Yellow Butt.

  • Randall

QOTD – We're finishing the judging of the beers for the CA State Fair this weekend, so I'll probably be sippin' on da various homebrews, which are all that's left to do. No more flights and flights of beer… so to quote a certain someone around here… YYYEEEEEEEEEEEHHAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWW!!!!
As for the vino, maybe some Foothills Barbera…

  • Randall

Here, here!! Love the domestic (read “California”) sparklers!! Just the other night we were on the way home after judging and popped into one of the great little places here in Sactown (Roxies) just as they were closing and happened to get called over to join a sparkling wine taster for the employees. Moet was ok, but the Schramsberg was outta sight. Bring on the US bubblies, GV!!

  • Randall

😛 Love dat Chouffe!! Anything brewed by Chouuffe!!

  • Wow, that's brave Gary, discussing Vin Jaune here with that superb Château-Chalon from one of my favourite producers … try pronouncing Vin Jaune like this – VAN SHOWN (keep the 'sh' quite soft, though) and the Savagnin grape its made from is pronounced SA-VA-NYAN. The 62cl bottle is called a Clavelin – CLA-V'LAN – and is technically not allowed to sold in the USA, I've been told, but comes through in very small quantities OK. Yes, price in euros would be around 30 direct from the producer.

I'm not surprised you didn't really like it, it's the ultimate food wine. The dominant flavour for me is of walnuts and it begins to make sense if you taste it while munching on some walnuts preferably also with a mature Comté cheese (that's the local Jura – SHOORA – cheese and a bit like a really good Swiss Gruyère).

  • Ben

I struggle sometimes where you think you should like a wine but then you really don't… you find your self trying to like it somtimes you like it one day but another day you don't … I struggle with my Pal…
hmmm this weekend for me is tomorrow… some beer with lunch maybe and a cab/bonnarda blend for dinner…

QOTD (viewed Sat): FUN STORY: We had a resident benefit party where I live for the ASPCA last night and the choices were a keg of Bud Light (gnar) or bottles of Funky Llama 09 – Chard (they chilled it) or 09 Shiraz.

It was all good though, I drank the Shiraz and had a great time. We live in kind of a kushy apartment home complex of mostly younger people outside Philly. They have these parties every couple of months in the common family room/internet cafe. So a good ways through the party when some of the older folks left, the music was turned up and someone broke out cups for Flip Cup, like we were in college. AWESOME. I was in : ) We played and my random team of funny characters went 9-0. So at this point I involuntarily was drinking Bud Light for the game. By the time 20 rounds died down and there were a handful of people left, someone had the bright idea of keg stands.

I think I can stop there. This is about the most uncharacteristic Friday eve for me and my lady. We're 30 & we keep it pretty chill usually. I thought you all may appreciate the story if you could imagine the comedy of a bunch of strangers put together for a resident party hosted by the property manager flipping the place upside down : )

  • QOTD;Erin Glenn Gewurztraminer while watching wine library, spanish coffee for the hockey game, wine tasting at a local shop after.

  • Randall

GV, the QOTD sure has generated a lot of answers begining with the letter “beer”. Time for another BLTV ep??

Great show! I love that you try to bring something interesting to each show and that you always 'bring it'. Keep up the good work, I appreciate it!

I have tried Vin Jaune before. It was fun to try once because it is unique. However, it is too expensive and too difficult to find to consider developing any kind of relationship with this freak. A more affordable way to try the flavour is to try a Cotes de Jura white. I don't think it is made using the same process as the Vin Jaune, however, it does use the same grape variety. You could think of it as a lighter version of the Vin Jaune. Perhaps it would be a good idea to try a Cotes de Jura before trying the Vin Jaune? It may also be difficult to find though.

    Lets see know.
    $100 bucks a bottle
    87 score
    Tasted, umm, ok.
I'll take a major pass thank you.
    QOTD:
In about 30 minutes, I will be on my front porch enjoying our traditional Cooks Brute sparkling before dinner.
For dinner, we will share a bottle (of either) Tattinger Torrantes, or one of the many red blends that are eager to be drunk.
    But to be entirely honest,
I will be drinking most anything I can get away with.

  • DREAMICON VALLEY drinks WELSCHRIESLING & GRÜNER VELTLINER from WOHLRAB this weekend
GREAT JOB Gerry + your cheering fans from DREAM ACADEMIA
Can´t wait to welcome you one day in AUSTRIA

Good show. I have a bottle of Vin Jaune I brought back from Paris 6-7 years ago. It's been quietly sitting in the back of the wine closet waiting for the right occasion to open. Maybe now's the time. From what I've been told, it's not something that should be drunk by itself. You need the right food to have with it. Sharp, bitter cheeses and/or nuts are a typical pairing.

  • Thanks for the show. Great to see you Mott.

QOTD: Villa Des Anges, Cab '08. The one you raved about a few epi's ago.

  • scottEJ

Way to nerd it up, G. Watching CM get off the LBC was worth the price of admission.

QOTD: We had an 07 Paso Zin tonight. I liked it more than the wife. She makes the burghound look like a puppy.

  • Freda
