QOTD – Ventisquero, Queulat, Merlot. Chile. With empanadas!!!

  • jstolpe

Maybe vin jaune is just a food pairing type of wine?
QOTD: I found -07 Les Pallières Les Racines in Sweden! That will be my weekend drink.

  • SamKw

I've had a white pinot noir before – someone brought it to dinner. It's basically the pinot noir equivalent of white zin. Had a sip just to see what it was like, and wasn't too impressed. Well, I wasn't expecting much anyway.

  • Danny Caudle

Ha! I was wondering what “mott” looked like. Keep up the good work Gary!!

  • liko sf

    Keep the unfamiliar wines coming.

QOTD: Whatever that has alcohol in it… it's been a rough week!

  • castello

    Nice! Congrats!

Hey Gary, I'm watching your show right now about Berthet Bondet while lounging on my big ass couch after a tough week at work. I am feeling a little sentimental so I got to say thank you and I want you to know how much your show means to me. Wine Library TV is like golf to me. I have been watching since about episode 450ish and I think I've seen all the episodes prior to that ( including #427 which is my all-time favorite ) Anyway, I enjoyed today's show, especially when Mott sat on the big ass couch. I think he deserves a show dedicated to him where we get to hear more about his WL experiences. QOTD: I am enjoying an 04 La Rasina right now while I write this. After watching episode #752 and traveling to Rome recently with my family, I have become a 04 Brunello freak.

  • Ah Finally got to finish that. I started watching before I had to leave for my niece's graduation and had to stop it and start all over again. Very interesting wine I love it when you bring out new wines. I like hearing about stuff I've never heard.

QOTD: I'm undecided what to drink because I have a petite Sirah open that I will more then likely finish tonight. I have a nice Forget Me Not Mead from the local meadery and also a peach lambic that I need to drink soon. I love the lambic I've just had too many wines that I ended up putting in front of it.

Somehow we've been getting it for about 35 years or more. Awesome, but I've heard they've been bought or something.

  • i am going to drink budweiser while i watch hockey

  • Altboy97

A great example of you drinking the $100 weird wine, so I don't have to. Thanks. So, allowing me (QOTD) to explore some refreshing whites on a hot Jersey weekend. Looking forward to the July 10 details!

    Bud = bad

I think I'm gonna pop and pour the Cedric Vincent 06 Beaujolais I just got from the fedex dude. A Cindy deal from last week. We'll see about bottle shock thingy. Hold on let me get the corkscrew..,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,. Plastic cork, not a good sign. Spilled a little when the cork came out. Light color but darker than most Burgundy. Let's give it a sniffy sniff mcgee. Some cherries in vodka smell, a little like cough syrup. Taste is ok. I've never had an aged boojolay and I don't usually go for light reds but this tastes pretty good. It may need food. Ah yes, its better with sushi. Still a little disjointed but not bad for 14 bones. I think I'll treat it like a rose or a white wine and chill it for a hot day. Maybe a good excuse to make sangria! Maybe it has bottle/travel shock since it just came 2k miles. Update in a couple weeks.

  • bradeng

I agree. At least drink something that doesn't taste like it came out of the piss trough at the demolition derby.

  • laposte

Oh, it is white deck sipper weather

  • I love when you nerd it up – never heard of this before. I just recently tried some sherry and didn't like it but I want to taste it again so I can be sure before I cross it off my list!

QOTD: Wine silly!! Visiting Spain tonight – 08 Rioja Darien DOC Tempranillo rich berries casis and a medium intensity on the finish! Delish + QPR- Ha! on the back of the label they have their email address – who woulda thunk it!

  • ONUMello

QOTD: Probably lots, college graduation, baby! I know we have a nice dinner at a superb restaurant planned, so likely something off of their list, I don't know what yet. A sample version they have has some of Randall Graham's wines on it & I've never had anything of his, I'm dying to try on if it's still there.

  • Thank you, Gary, for keeping WLTV going – love it!

QOTD: It is Belgian and German ales this weekend…Gulden Draak and Aventinus.

  • Klassh

    QOTD: Coke or Barqs rootbeer.

  • Cool_Dave

I havn't watched this yet but afeter seeing the subject I just know that somewhere John J just peed his pants!

  • Allan

    Ok

  • Allan

    : )

  • castello

Where is John J???? Did he give up or did he comment already? He was persistent for a year or more.

  • castello

    Fake sugar?

  • castello

I'd give it 48 points for almost being a beer. Monopoly big time! I feel like I may be struck by lightening for saying it.

  • John_Kenneth

1st off THANK YOU GARY. I figured after requesting a vin jaune on maybe 400 of your episodes that I'd maybe bugged you into never putting one on. So I was very happy and surprised when I logged on after work to see the title of the episode.

Granted this is so totally a nerd's nerd's nerd's/wino's/cork dork's wine. And yes from what I've been able to find in the few distributor's in Maryland they are pretty pricey. I was just happy to see you finally throw a yellow wine on the show, even if only for something different. As far as Maryland goes, there are only 2 vin jaunes sent to MD at all, and only 1 from Chateua-Chalon, the Caves Jean Bourdy Chateau-Chalon. Which to be even more nerdy was rated recently by French Premier Sommeliers as among the top 3 wineries in all France excelling in a rouge and blanc wine-the other 2 being Dom. de la Romanee-Conti and Chat. Haut-Brion. Apparently the Caves Jean Bourdy Chateau-Chalon from 1865 is still drinking great! There were only 5 bottles of the most recent Chateau-Chalon from Caves Jean Bourdy even shipped to the entire stae of MD! Only Tersiguel's restaurant just outside Baltimore even carries that wine. I was lucky and nerdy enough to obtain 2 of those 5 bottles.
Anyway I really appreciate you doing this episode Gary, loved that you had something totally new on, and I hope when I try one of my vin jaune's for the 1st time that it fares better than yours did. I will definitely be having it with comte cheese, which I've hear is the thing to have with this wine along with toasted walnuts. either way way for a wino/nerd like me, I'm just gonna be thriller to have something rare, unique, and really different from the varietal to how it's made to the profile of the wine itself from most of the other wines out there today.

If anyone else wants to hear about the more “nerdier” aspects of vin jaune, including how unique it is from how it's made to what it pairs with, I found this written blog a few months ago: (under the Jan 22, “France's Lost Wine” blog)http://www.tersiguels.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=24&Itemid=41

And for the few people who hadn't heard of this wine and were intrigues that was awesome, I hope they all find a good 1.

qotd: I have no idea, but I'm sure it'll be wine

  • LindseyN

QOTD: Going to a wedding tomorrow so will probably drink some bubbly. I've been really partial to champagne lately. I had the 2004 Gramona Cava on New Years and it was amazing.

  • Fantastic episode! Sorry you didn't love it but you tried it for “us” which is just huge. Thanks Gary!

QOTD: Beef short ribs are braising in the oven for tomorrow night. I am going to break out some New World Syrah. California will take on Australia. Tonight it is zin with some homemade pizza!

  • OzzyMike

Nice show Gary, big sherry drinker but havent come across this before. will definetely give it a bash.
I agree with past comments posted, a show dedicated to Mott where he tastes whatever he enjoys drinking/eating. hilarious

  • KentW

QOTD: Looking forward to a wine tasting get together on Sat. with a group of neighbors. Expect to try around 15 different varieties with various cheeses and meats. Will be mostly reds.

  • BradK

qotd: Had a Montepeloso 05 Nardo, really good stuff, tomorrow Lazy Creek 05 Pinot. Also, tastsed the 07 Beringer rsv chard……..they've completely changed the style of this wine in the past 5-7 years, I was surprised that there was no appearance from the butter bandit.

  • dsallen

Cool! I love learning stuff from this show. I'm a CKC and have never heard of Vin Jaune before now.

QOTD: Vouvray and Riesling – summer is here!

  • dreamteam sf

fun show. berthet-bondet makes an intriguing savagnin-chardonnay blend that is quite good. it is slightly oxidized but overall more user friendly and less esoteric than the vin jaune. they also make a great chardonnay that is gorgeous and oh so fresh and so clean clean. QOTD–attending a few graduation parties this weekend, so i'll probably be bringing some cava (my bank account can't support champers). probably gonna drink some anchor steam as well.

    Back to the basics!

    Friday couch!

    Nerd wine!

Mott on sofa! (for a second pussy:))

  • FullOnNelson

This is the most interesting wine on the show to date. Searching Wikipedia after this comment.

QOTD: My brother's home brew. I know, most people roll their eyes when someone tells them they brew their own beer, but my brother has made dozens of batches of beer. They're good. Let's see if this orange scented brew hits a home run.

  • Pat__B

QOTD: I will be dinking lots and lots of Houblon Chouffe IPA Dobbelen Tripel. Fantastic summer beer. Very Tasty. I am going to stop typing and get one now acutally….

  • mattgmann

No wines for me tonight though.

I take that back… some cheap chard my friend had that gave me mixed emotions between the fact that it had some nice earthiness and minerality, but really smelled like shit.

Never had Vin Juane, or honestly heard of it before today. If the price of this wine is a general indicator, probably not a drink I'll have any time soon.

I did have some nice beers this evening though…and scotch. Enough so that this post definitely falls under the “while intoxicated” group.

  • Thursday

Of course… I had to buy it before the show 😉
That's okay… I'm still happy I did… I have a rather insatiable condition that requires me to taste anything I can.
G.V.-Do you think this could/should evolve over time into something more satisfying? Seems like it's still a baby in terms of potential age.

QOTD: too soon for specifics… but surely, wine transitioning into really cheap beer, no, really, really cheap light beer.

  • castello

    You are here! Cool!

  • mattgmann

QOTD: This weekend……hard to tell. My niece turns 1 tomorrow, so at the family get-together i may indulge in a PBR. Sunday I will be fly fishing as the sulphurs are hatching. Don't normally drink while fishing in warm weather, but a flask with some scotch for snakebite might appear while waiting for the spinner fall in the evening. Depending on moods, when I come home, there might be a corkage of the 07 Pegau CdP, a wine I've been dying to try.

But, if it's late, the Pegau will wait until Monday.

It's 1:03 eastern here at the moment, and I'm fighting the drunken urge to pop a cork as I know it would be wasted. But on the other hand, I have so many “party favor” wines at the bar, it's hard not to gamble and see if one is better than mouthwash.

  • mattgmann

If you haven't tasted, or heard of any beers from founders brewery in Michigan, you should seek one out hastily. My favorite brewery at the moment not only for creative, but extremely well balanced beers.

Pabst Blue Ribbon is of course a close second.

  • jparadise

Just read the comment below mine (or above…mattgmann's) what a wacky coincidence. We are having a big b-day bash for my nieces (twins) who are also turning 1 tomorrow. So happy b-day to our little nieces.

QotD: My father recently was part of a wine grab bag of sorts where everyone puts in a wine and you pick a number and that's the bottle you take home. Well he put in a bottle of Conundrum (around $20) and pulled out a 1983 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. Not a bad deal. So some of us will slink away from the 60 or so people at the party and have a little tasting of what hopes to be a fantastic '83 Bordeaux.

  • A bunch of Rose', it's that time of year. And, by the way, so far most of the samples have been pleasantly dry in style. Good News!

  • Rose' all weekend. So far all the samples have been on the dry side. I love it. Keep up the good work Gary!

  • XpensiveWino

Fantastic another obscure wine, but still no domestic sparkler show. Are you just a French Champagne snop Gary? There are a lot of good domestics out there that you just seem to refuse to review or show!

  • Welcome back laid back Friday.
QOTD: Something from Friday's Cindy 4 pack perhaps. Definitely a PBR or 2.

  • QOTD: We had a 6-year old Chianti with dinner tonight.
    Visiting some wineries tomorrow afternoon.

  • Charlotte_DK

Champagne (N.V.), blanc de blancs from Camille BonVille.
