  • Interesting try.

QOTD: Lots of good craft beer tonight at Churchkey.

  • I'm drinking a bottle of my friend Paul's small batch brew of beer….and something unknown at a wedding reception tonight.

2006 Clos del Rey, Cotes du Roussillon, and maybe something else. Interesting episode, I have been curious about those wines and would love to try one some time.

  • Love that you don't hide your disappointment in a “premium” wine.
QOTD – A local wine shop is coming to our place tomorrow evening to do a wine tasting, So I'll be tasting 5 new wines. My lovely wife put this together for the neighbors.
My picpoul arrived today. Sometime this weekend we'll taste this puppy.
Btw – love the screw cap. Makes life a little easier.

  • T. Wood.

QOTD: A 2008 Argentinian Mendoza Shiraz Bonarda. There's certainly value to be had <£5 with this one (call-back to Ep #389). Maybe a wee dram of Glenlivet 18 yr old too!

Good show Gary V. Get some UK sparklers on your show some time soon, mate. Yes, you heard.

  • I wonder if there is such a thing as entry level Vin Jaune?

Anyway; QOTD: I'm going to try out this 2007 Cleavage Creek Secret Red I got 2 days ago and probably this 2007 Foris Pinot I also got 2 days ago.

Maybe have a beer tomorrow though; 80+ degrees and a little gardening calls for cerveza!

QOTD: it's starting to heat up a little here in the Northwest so I'm looking forward to a Boddington's Pub Ale.

I liked this wine a bit better than you did, but I was still disappointed. I think these things really need a few decades of age on them to really sing (from what I've read). Strange price on the east coast, though. You can get it in Oregon around $55-60. Here's my note on the 2000 Domaine Berthet Bondet Château-Chalon:

10/14/2009: Completely unique nose, and I wouldn't really say oxidized at all. Smells something like charred popcorn (but nothing like how popcorn is often associated with oak). There's also a strong component of an apple skin, but only after the apple has fallen from the tree and landed in the dirt several weeks ago… the apple's getting a bit soft. But this aroma is just the skin of that apple. There's also quite a bit of intense flavors here, almost acidic in nature. Really interesting. The wine has a similar taste profile, and again is completely unique. Lots of acidic nature, and not quite as creamy in the mouth as I expected. Thoroughly interesting, and very educational. No formal score, but my gut would probably say around 91. (178 views)

QOTD: I got this sparkling Blood orange juice I want to try. Sounds Yummy.

QOTD: I'd like to have a Malbec rose' this weekend (if I can find one around here).

Should have Mott on camera when he's tasting, be funny to see his face scrunch up tasting “Nerd wine”.

    Dear Gary,

First of all big ups for tasting vin jaune, even the french think it's obscure and strange. Went to a tasting and found most vins jaune (pronounce: vin jooooone) not special enough. Though normally they aren't cheap, because of the time it takes for them to mature. But a 100 cudos ? I think some french guy @#$%^ you over. By the way thr eis nothing but vin jaune in the jura. They fo not have any other quality wine.
For all the dutch viewers I have a video-winetasting-blog on wijngek.tv. Lots of love,
    Seb

  • seb10

pilsner urquel that is great beer man, didn't know you could get that stuff in the US

QOTD: If it's hot out, lots of water and iced tea. Was at WL a couple of weeks ago and bought a NY State Rose' Nautiq or Nautica–definitely opening that for starters.

Received a Jura for a Christmas present. Got all the flavor profiles you did, it was either a 2000 or 2002–felt the same way and being that I like Sherry I thought I might have enjoyed the wine a little more. Didn't really care for it at all.

  • jason carey

    its an oxidative winemaking style

  • guymandude

Going to a wine tasting, so , a whole bunch.

  • I've never seen a wine like that. Looks good. I want to try it soon.

  • Great show, this type of 'nerd wine' episode is my favorite thing about WLTV, and what I search for in the archives.
QOTD: Tonight I'm going to drink a 2007 estate grown Pinot from Stoller, out of Dundee Hills, OR. I went tasting up there last week, and this bottle ($30) was favorite out of the 10 or so wineries I visited. It had a great, heavy body, all the wonderful earthy, mushroomy, and green peppery characteristics of good Oregon pinots, but also some bright red fruit flavors that reminded me of Cali; and it was perfectly balanced. I'm bringing a couple bottles to a buddy's graduation party, and I expect it to be a hit.

  • Clark

Hopefully some Dark Horse Amber tonight and then whatever they are serving at the wedding tomorrow. Sunday is likely going to be one of the white pinot noir bottlings we picked up in Oregon.

  • You should volunteer for free. Wouldn't be hard to find a place for all those boxes. 🙂

  • WhoDat_Noir

Just graduated from LSU with my B.S. in Biology. Took a quick sec to check out WLTV.
QOTD: Beer lots and lots of beer

    Hell Yes Friday Couch!
QOD: If i get over the flu coffee if i don't tea (Kava or Earl Grey). Busy end of semester time for the grad student

  • CJ

is that the same as pinot blanc?

  • agentorange

Thanks for the new vino knowledge Gary. Wasn't familiar with Vin Jaune 'till today.

QOTD: We're about to pop the cork on a slightly sweet and not very expensive Vouvray (La Forcine 2008) to pair up with a batch of home cooked hot and spicy shrimp and soba noodle salad.

    Cheers!

  • yacochuya

QOTD Villa Le Prata Brunello 2000

  • A dumb Rhein king

While Pinot Blanc is a genetically mutated Pinot Noir, I'm assuming he means a regular Pinot Noir that has been pressed with no skin contact. Their pulp is white, but skins are red. Like how a Champagne can be a blanc de noir (white from black).

  • Bill

    Good show.

qotd: Rose and more rose, to go with wild salmon and fat asparagus. Have you done a pure rose show? Would be nice.

  • Tom T.

    Assoteric??? LOL!
    QOTD – water.
