  • I have to admit I do have a huge thing for PBR especially at the end of a night.

  • If the Macho Man is not won of the slated “6” guests, you'll break the rule right? πŸ˜‰

  • mattgmann

QOTD: I'm really not sure. I love to bust out some awesome American wines for the holiday, but I honestly don't have any favs at the moment. I found a cheap Chard by Charles smith that's pretty good for the price, called Eve. I'd appreciate if anyone could rec a good american sauvignon blanc or sparkler (inexpensive).

    Where is my edit button?

  • waynooo daaa wino

    i hid it……. :O)

  • castello

I like most of the lower end Napa bubbles. Chandon or Domaine something from Sonoma. 15 to 20 bones.

  • castello

    How long should we wait?

  • castello

Life's too short to drink crap beer!

  • lhp46

Juan Gil rocks. Excellent value. Also like the Altos de Luzon which is similar for my palate.

  • PearlGirlWhirl

I'm very VERY sad to hear there will be only 6 guests during the next 6 months….but I guess I'm in the minority.

QOTD: going to celebrate with friends, who have been imperative in stating no one is to bring anything because they have “tons of surprise-wines” to share…hmmm…well, I am looking forward to this!

  • castello

    A pill and a scotch!

  • waynooo daaa wino

Yo John, How 'bout hittin' me wit a pill or two….. :OD

  • thief.. πŸ˜›

  • I'm with you. Love me some guests but, you watch and enjoy. πŸ™‚

  • Looks like I'm driving all three of your asses home. πŸ˜›

  • mattgmann

I'm not against guests, so long as they are entertaining and knowledgeable. There have been some great ones this year, i.e. Kermit Lynch. But the salesmen guests are a bother and I'd just rather not have them. Watching G squirm drinking their wine and trying to be polite stinks.

  • unWine'd

Solid… Love some Bourgogne Pinot Noirs, Old Worlds. How about this for Pinot Noirs: Compare Southern Cali, Central Cali, Northern Cali, Oregon & Washington????

QoTD- July 4th weekend – 3 couples @ 2 bottles and different countries for tasting: I'm going w/ Gaja Borolo on the top end and an Amarone for middle-of-the-road.

  • Nice, Albert Mann is one of my favourite producers. Check out their Auxerrois if you see it, good value and tasty.

  • njc2o

omg owwww the burnsauce got in my eyessss

  • waynooo daaa wino

Yo Matt, You're Right, Had that Auxerrois and it waaas GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD !!!!!!!! ;o)

  • WineWoman

QOTD: Some American Pinot's 1 Loring(Rosella's Vineyard?) and 1 Dain Juliet Savage. Good opportunity to have a Syrah–haven't put together the menu yet. Piper-Heidsick Extra Dry Champagne and an everyday “patriotic” wine because it has a flag on the label. Washington State Charles and Charles? Not completely certain of the name, but you had the winemaker on the show(K-Vintners) He had some wild, curly hair.

  • Ben K.

'04 Brunellos through a beer bong. Just kidding. Supposed to be mild Wx in Southwestern Michigan/Chicago so the Brunello will be on hand and also th '08 Pieropan Soave.

  • Benjaminprice3

Good show…I love when I get done watching one of these and think to myself…yeah, I can shell out $75 for a bottle this weekend, my wife won't mind.

QOTD: We have a wine party this weekend and I'm bringing a 2000 Damilano Borolo Liste that I'm pretty excited about. I love Piedmont but hate having to wait to drink them.

  • plcb

I don't know if I can watch a Nuits Ste Georges show. I love Burgundy too much yet times are tough and I can't afford any. Fortunately I have a nice selection of 2002 and 2005 Burgundies in my cellar. While I can't spend money now, I'm lucky to have a nice collection.

  • Altboy97

I love your fire, Wika quote of the furture. Its the renaissance of the Thunder Show, the golden age. Totally agree. Looking forward to trying some nice, light whites this weekend (but no Chard please) since it looks like it will be a hot one. GV, Chenin Blanc, SB, or I picked up a really nice Souve at the WL tasting Sat. Will likely go visit my friends at Ventimiglia in North Jersey, where they recently released a really nice dry Cab Rose that would be good too.

  • Phil G

GV, my girlfriend watched too many 'Real Housewives' shows and I am sometimes forced to join… that damn Money/Class song was probably the worst thing I experienced in the last 90 days – it was a terrible and over-indulgent, and in some ways, the embodiment of everything that is wrong with our country. I am not happy that you have forced me to revisit this moment.

On the other hand, I am drinking the Moncaro Verdiccio from the 101 wines book and it is going pretty well the giant salad I made for dinner. Some switchblade acid action going on for sure.

Also wanted to remind you that a few weeks back, you and a guest had a good discussion about the fact that light red wines can still be complex and sophisticated.

Love that you learned the speak English from Bob Barker? sweet.

I like the old-school shows ? glad to see that you are re-focused. However ? I would bet there will be at LEAST 15 more guests this year. That?s fine by me, just laying it out there?

QOTD ? I am greedy and don?t want to share my wine with anyone? HA!

  • kevinkossowan

Always love the Burgundy coverage, and appreciate the energy and focus. July 1, here up in Canada…not July 4. Usually when the family who are into wine get together, some nice bottles of Domaine Weinbach come out. So many big red lovers and dry white haters about that you have to choose your audience sometimes..

  • Pnwskibum

Love it when you do Burgundy Gary! I will be sharing 06 DeChevelier Blanc and 05 Bouchard Corton charlie anlong with some others. Oysters and Fireworks my two favorite things.

  • Great show Gary. I hope I get a chance to try the last one sometime soon. Sounds awesome! Pinot is just a grape I havent got back too in my slow quest of checking out new stuff.

QOTD: I dont have any kind of bomb shell break out wine, but a zinfandel I have been wanting to try and to get my newphews horizons farther out then just cab! Its a 2007 Brazin Zinfandel Old Vine and I cant wait to have it with grilled burgers!

  • Jtienstra

Great solid good show. You and the wine. That is what we come for and that is what you do best.

  • David M Roberts

Circa 2006-2007 is the way to go! That's when I first got into wine, and discovered WLTV. This show really brings that back, and happy to see it (not like we ever lost you – I just think the timing for the “back to basics” feels right. So often, a favorite TV show or series jumps the shark, and the fear is, the raw grit and energy that defined that show from the first season is gone forever… but, you are rolling it back old school, and that is appreciated. 2006 is a cool place to be in this context.

QOTD: Because my July 4th friends like white wine and are newbies when it comes to wine, I always enjoy presenting Pine Ridge chenin blanc / viognier blend; it is perfect for summer weather, balanced, with starfruit, citrus and some mild acidity and pucker, making it an easy to drink crowd pleaser for about $10-$13 only.

  • stephenjohnbryde

love the back to basics !!

  • Dave O

Great show – immediately forwarded to a friend (pinot lover, but decidedly CA/OR pinot) who recently complained that a Burg “did nothing for me.” Yeah, it was a little flat, but I think it takes some time to tune into the subtle complexities and flavors of a tasty French Burgundy…and it's well worth the effort. Would love to see a recent favorite French Burg or two stacked up against a recommended Cali or OR pinot, both for flavor and for price. They're creeping up prices on this side of the Atlantic, too.

QOTD: Terra Sparkling Malbec. I love the look of surprise when someone tastes – and loves -a fizzy red wine. This started with sparking Shiraz last Thanksgiving, which was a huge hit – and the dryness and more earthy flavors of the Malbec just work so well with the fizz. Plus, 4th of July + sparklers. Duh.

  • plcb

QOTD: I like introducing friends/family to Spanish whites and reds.

Maybe Eddie Vedder can buy the pricey Burgundy since he likes pinot noir.

  • Of course this type of episode is Top Notch; that said, I enjoy guest episodes as much, they're fun and there is something about branching conversations that make WLTV a wide ranging show.

What will episode bring, when it comes: major give-away? party? sweepstakes? raffle? all of these? I hope so.

QOTD: we have been sitting on a bottle of Consecrating wine (not holy nor religious, just a sweet Spanish wine used popularly by priests) for a long time and we believe this Friday is the time to open and give it a go. Can't imagine what we could pair it with, probably nothing, too sweet (though spritzer will be at hand).

  • Pumpin' out the goodness.. Love it! Keep up the old school episodes, gotta drop some wine knowledge every once in a while!

QOTD: No plans for wine yet, but that is the essence of wine for me right there, sharing it with others. Opened a Cakebread chard and a big Napa Cab blend for my girlfriends parents this weekend (they're into that sort of thing, me, not so much…) and they loved both. Even though they were wines I normally wouldn't go to, being able to share them made the experience so enjoyable.

  • waynooo daaa wino

Yo Mattgmann, Geyser Peak makes a tasty Savignon Blanc that is readily avaliable for about 10 bones.

  • My man! Always puts a smile on my face when you go “old school” and B2B (Back to Basics). Also, I love the 1/2-bottles and wondered if you have every tried a 750 and 350ml head-to-head of the same wine and noticed any difference?

QOTD: Since I will be in Ocean City having a nice crab cake dinner I'm guessing I will pair it with a nice SB or Viognier.

    Cheers!

  • Dan F

this is my first comment on WLTV. started watching in january and sadly have been lurking for some time now. great episode. also liking the original format.

qotd: will be spending some time with my brother for the first time in a while. i am most excited to open the 2 bottles of charles heidsieck 1990 blanc des millenaire. along with the bottle of '96 legras cuvee st vincent that i ordered from wine library, it should make for a good vintage champagne tasting.

i'll do my best to keep commenting now that i've broken the seal.

  • Beeper

Sorry, Gary, haven't been commenting much lately as a result of heavy workload and new iPad…will make an effort to pick it back up again…

    QOTD: Navarro Lopez Granrojo Garnacha

  • Randall

Many moons. 'Til it turns a dull brick red(ish brown)…

  • jeffsjeff

Definitely more one-liners per minute than any episode I can remember. I almost want to make a highlight reel for JUST this episode. In fact, I will. Mott, I'm gonna e-mail when I get back from vacation next week.

  • Wow! Guess I'm old school on the tv.winelibrary! Excellent show as was Riesling episode. You are bringing the thunder educating again this time about Nuits St Georges. Thanks!!

QOTD: A crew is coming over so looking for QPR wine this weekend in the form of Sherwood Pinot, Festivo Malbec, Trajarinho Vinho Verde, and Laboure Roi Bourgogne Blanc. Will pop something better on second night when it is just the fam and my bro (and his wife of course).

  • Excellent! May have to open some bubbles myself!

  • RANDINTHECITY

    GARY!!!!

QOTD: Good ques. I'll be in Puerto Rico…and not sure what I'll be drinking..but will def. try some bubbly and anything NEW.. will report back!! LOL

    Love you Gary-licious! <3

    good show.

  • Earl

Thanks for the show! Quails Gate Family Reserve Chardonnay 2007 b/c it's local

  • ZachNYC

Good show. I tend to lean towards US based PN's rather than Burgundy region. Good timing on the last two shows. This weekend I was planning on some PN's and Rieslings!

    Have a safe one GV.

  • gotsha

2001 Domaine Chauvenet Chopin Nuits Saint Georges 1st Cru Aux Argillas..$42 bones. I saw, watched or read somewhere recently that there are no Grand Cru wines from Nuits Saint Georges for tax reasons. When the classification system was first put in place, those that were chosen as Grand Cru had to pay some sort of extra tax on their wines. Wineries from Nuits St. Georges refused to pay the tax, therefore they were not included……I could have been an all-star football player back in high school, but my sister had a piano recital on the first day of practice so I decided not to try out for the team.

  • Really enjoyed the last 2. I finally learned to stick my entire nose in the glass.
